I stood there, frozen, but so glad my fellow actor got on stage and snapped me out of it. I finished the play (it was the last performance of the play), then had a breakdown afterwards. His apology during the panic attack is the most important part of this scene for me. It's subtle, but it's there and perfectly placed. Any time I've had a relatively rare panic attack, I've felt the need to apologize (often profusely) to anyone whom I felt I was "burdening" with this extremely personal issue. Just amazing writing and acting all around

      My theory is Ted’s panic attack is longer than what was shown in the show. Rebecca would have finished the whole song, which might be 2-3 more minutes, some pleasantries with Sassy (since Rebecca just sang to her daughter), noticed Ted gone for a while, gotten her coat from Sam (might be a story arc there), walked normally and not in a hurry. because if she caught Ted’s panic attack mid song and tried to follow him, i would assume 1 or 2 people would have followed her as well, maybe Sassy and/or Keely.

When he walks out on the pitch for their first match, he has a moment. There is even a small moment when he gets into bed the first night he is there and he’s rubbing his hands a very little bit. He’s bombarded with questions and you can see him trying to get through it and then that sound of “ringing in your ears” starts coming through, which you can also hear the ringing in this scene too. This whole episode had been building up to see Rebecca show off her beautiful singing voice which ironically leads to Teds attack. At first we feel ripped off that we can’t see Rebecca sing but then we get to see something better: Her being caring, compassionate and gentle for the first time. It’s like seeing a Disney villain change but it doesn’t feel fake or forced because it ties to the other side of her personality. She can be cold and domineering but also protective and caring. This show....no words really.

    • @briminyc4118
      @briminyc4118 3 роки тому +25

      I get your point but we had seen her be caring and compassionate with Keeley before, on more than one occasion. It's not like she was being a Disney villain up to this point. There was always obvious pain and caring going on underneath well, pain. The cold and domineering part was largely a self defense mechanism brought about from her abusive relationship.

    I just wanted to point out that Ted must have been out there by himself trapped in his own head for several minutes at least before Rebecca showed up, because she had only just started the song when he left and none of the players ever caught on to his panic attacks or made a comment about her not finishing the song and they didn't come with her to find him so they must not have noticed anything wrong, not only the length of the song but probably add on a minute or two for Sassy and Keeley gushing over the performance before Rebecca notices Ted isn't there since he'd have absolutely been there with the girls complimenting the hell out of her, then the time scanning the club to make sure he's not just struck up a random yet wholesome conversation with a complete stranger like he'd absolutely do. The thought of those terrifying minutes made worse by the fact that in that time no one else either could, wanted, or cared to see what was wrong until Rebecca showed up. I've never had a panic attack but the comments I've read from others here who have say that this is a very accurate portrayal and while I hope I never do have a firsthand experience to compare it to, this scene did a hell of a job convincing me on as deep a level as my imagination is capable of taking it how utterly terrifying a panic attack has to be.

    The song playing in the background of him signing the divorce papers covers perfectly what his realization is. Tho they are getting divorced and this meaningful part of his life is gone he is still him. He is not less than what he was before. He and she may be able to be more of themselves finally.

    I’ve had a panic attack once in my life, at a time where it honestly didn’t make any sense. For a while I thought I was dying and it didn’t occur to me that it may have been one until I described it to my friend, who has them frequently. This is exactly what it was like. Never found out what triggered it.

    I've only ever experienced a panic attack once. Never thought I would ever have one. That was a bit over 3 years ago. I was going through separation with my wife. With reality setting in that i would eventually divorce and she was going to move out of state which would mean i would barely get to see my daughter. This scene hit me pretty hard because even though today i have my daughter, get to see her everyday when i come home and my marriage was saved, there was a time when i never thought it would ever be. And it was a dark place. And i kept it all bottled up. Until it all overflowed. I really hope that everyone out there is doing okay. And if someone you know is going through some tough times, be there for them. Much love to everyone who took the time to read all of this.

    This is one of the reasons why this show kicks so much ass. They did two things in one swing. They humanized both of the lead actor's characters. IF Rebecca was as much of a bitch as she thinks she is when she tells him the truth she would have used this moment to break him. She didn't because she's not. As for Ted whose optimism is strong... it can quickly become obnoxious. Instead they gave him flaws, moments to snap (like when he snaps at Jaimie the first time in the locker room), when he snaps at Nate later in this episode. It just reinforces the point that its not BEING perfect that's important... but a concerted effort to try and be better. They also make a point to show in the Nate situation that he apologizes to him.
    I started watching the show after YT recommendations showed me the Dart Scene with Rupert. Prior to that I had had no interest in watching it... but it was so unbelievably poignant to me... that I had in that scene been called out. I had judged this show as a run of the mill sports comedy without even the slightest bit of curiosity to see if I was right or not. And I am not. Scenes like this, among many others, are proof of why this show deserves to be as popular as it is.

    When I first watched this scene, I finally felt someone knew what a panic attacks looks like and feels like. I can so relate to this. When I have panic attacks, my ears close up, they ring, noises are distorted and I have to leave the area before it gets over stimulating or I will scream. I cried when I first saw this scene and was like "Yes, the people on this show get it!" I have to distance myself from what is causing my reaction. I have a great support group among my family and that's been the most important thing for me. The support of family and friends who I can now share this scene to show them this is how I feel. I am so going to miss this show when it ends.

    The numb/tingling hands and ringing in the ears are very familiar. And the “panic” of the panic attack. It sounds obvious, but it’s hard to convey to someone who has never had a panic attack what the feeling is like. Flight-or-fight kicks in. Your brain is telling you you’re going to die. Breathing is the thing that gets it under control for me. Before I learned breathing techniques, I would just have to keep spiralling until it passed.

    One of these changed my life. I was living alone back then, had a terrible day during a rough patch and when the attack hit I fall to the ground alone in my flat, hyperventilating like crazy, I honestly thought that I was going to die because I couldn't breath properly, after the worst while of my life I guess survival mode went on and I could start to take regular breaths. I've never seen my problems and what really life is the same from that day.

As someone going through a rough patch with my GF and the mother of my 8 year old son (mutual infidelity, emotional distance and the works), it hits hard every time I watch it. It's even more significant knowing that Jason Sudeikis experienced the dissolvement of his marriage himself.
