I crashed my 1969 Triumph Bonneville

  • Last year I purchased a 1969 Triumph Bonneville in hopes that it would give me the same joy I've found when driving vintage cars. I've ridden motorcycles since I four or five years old. My dad raced motocross, and got my brothers and I into it early on in life.
I haven't ridden bikes as much as an adult simply because we did it so much as kids. I find myself driving cars and wrenching a lot, but I've been itching to ride again in the last couple of years. Since I bought this classic motorcycle the same week that I bought a 1968 Porsche 912, I have yet to spend very much time with the bike. I ended up restoring the old porsche as this bike sat in the garage, patiently waiting it's turn.
In this episode my buddy Andrew and I take the carburetors apart and clean them, then take the bikes out for a ride. Since this was a one day mission, we didn't have a lot of time to trouble shoot. Unfortunately we weren't able to get it running very good. It just didn't have the power it did when I bought it. Still not sure what the issue is, I'll need to take more time to figure it out.
Oh, and I crashed the damn thing in the first 5 or 10 minutes of riding. I was modulating the choke while riding around trying to figure out what was going on. I would crack the choke open and the engine was running better, momentarily..then the revs would get too high and I'd close the choke. Doing this up a hill with the throttle all the way open..the revs built up and the throttle stuck open. Not knowing what was on the other side of the hill, off the throttle with the engine staying high in rpms, I got on the brakes and ended up laying it down. Luckily we got it going after it wouldn't run so we could at least ride some more and film some shots.
    Thanks for watching!

PS: the headlight bezel should be pretty easy to find.

Hey, man how’s it going ? Just sub’d lasted night while watching your Porsche content. Enjoyed watching your stuff. I’m 25 and dream of owning an early 911 someday. A lad can only dream right now, as I was blessed with a second chance at life. I’m currently in school studying fashion design and praying I make it someday to be able to afford one someday. Keep up the great content, m8.

First off congratulations to the Gideon Family! How about that, a son is born, how blessed you are brother! As for the Triumph, it was soooo reminiscent of watching Steve McQueen right down the to deer skin gloves. As you may know he would often throw a couple of bikes in his truck and head out to do just what you guys did, and what a beautiful place to spend the day riding, my goodness! The evening sunset was absolutely wonderful. As for the feeding issues, you'll sort it out. Do these carbs have a vacuum section for the fuel flow to the bowl? How about free flow through the filters? If you can find a cheap sonic cleaner or buy one of the gallon cleaning fluid buckets with the built in strainer you may want to soak the carbs for a couple of days and then put it all back together again. I'll assume you checked the tank already too. Anywho, you'll get it, these things are pretty straight forward. Big congats again to you and yours, peace, Scott

The bike needs to be tuned , timing ,and carb, if you go out ,always carry a few tools and spare fuse, these are the basics of motorcycle riding,
