1968 Porsche 912 Survivor // These are the fun jobs

  • New tires, a brake bleed (wasn't that fun), getting a key cut, swapping the grille out for a nicer look. Once you've tackled replaced basically everything mechanical, the small jobs like these feel pretty special. They feel light, and easy..because they are. When you're knee deep pulling new tunnel lines through the car, or even just cleaning all the incredibly old suspension parts..it feels like it's never going to end. I started with a small list. The list grew. Then the list grew a lot more. Then my head hurt. Then my wallet hurt. Then I got over it all pressed on, wrestling one task at a time. Sometimes pin balling between tasks since ordering and waiting on parts seems to be more of a battle than turning a wrench.
    This. Is. All. Good.
I love that I got to do this, and I love that its mostly done. Continuing to envision my first drive in the car. I've been lucky enough to own air-cooled porsches and these cars are just so good. For some reason, this little 912 makes me want to have endless adventures unlike any car I've owned. Time will tell if this proves to be true once I have the engine in it. A porsche 912 may not be a 911, but thats good. It isn't one, its a different thing that has always been hamstrung because its not a 911. I like that.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the support. I'm sure I'll always make videos, because I love this. I'll stop doing weekly videos when it doesn't make sense anymore. Hopefully I'll be able to do this for a long time.

Very good video Michael, it was real. No hype or monotone rambling, you do a good job at this and I think you should continue (as time permits!). I have a Schwaben power bleeder that work very well, not sure what king you have. I recently bought a Schwaben vacuum coolant filler and that was 'da bomb brother! I just finished up all the running gear on my 01 Carrera, every control are, inner and outer tie rod, sway bar bushings and links, coolant purge and refresh, oil/filter change and am ready to fit back the bottom panels and remount the wheels tomorrow! Yes! When I want to chill out in the house your channel is one of my picks, thanks again for doing this brother! The 912 will be back on the road soon!

Now that's good old fashion stuck. I feel your pain because I had to walk 5 miles in the summer between Phoenix and Tucson wearing new leather sandals which caused horseshoe shaped blisters on heels and since it was in the 80's I had to stay over on a Sunday to hit the ATM to get cash for a tow for my convertible. I was lucky someone stopped to give me a ride that mile or so of course he had the AC cranked. I thought I was going to freeze to death, that sounds funny right. Well you get used to the heat especially with a convertible. Old cars are fun and can be an adventure as well, sounds like you're enjoying yours. Sean ps I was watching at home so a different email. Congrats on the new baby!!!

Thanks man. I’m definitely not going to give up easily. If it doesn’t start really taking off I’ll have to scale back and maybe just do a video every month or so. Thanks for all the support over the past year Hulley 🤝

How cool that the key works in the ignition ( Huge) , using a power bleeder can be a problem mainly because of the point that you attach it to the brake master reservoir ( as you probably already know) that seal is very specific that why I have 3 different types but about 1/2 of the time I will find a helper/ foot to pump. One last thing be careful when the motor is out that you’re electrical connections to the engine are sitting bare and exposed to possible problems such as direct contact with positive to negative causing other issues. Now go take care of your wife and baby boy. Thanks again for the videos.

Extremely cool to have the 80’s Carrera, 72E, and 60s 912. Which to drive on a given day? Depends on which roads and your mood I guess. That’s quite a luxury…I hope you get to keep them all for a while.

Hello, I am new to this whole thing. Is there anyway I can contact you via email? I have the identical car , same color and all. A 23 year old friend of mine worked at the restoration shop in Nebraska where this car came from. We flew in from Michigan on the 5th. of May and drove it home on Saturday the 6th. I am 74 with a bad left knee, ( I just love Porsches but it makes no sense to get a stick right now) I handed him the keys and said you drive home. He spent over 200 hours on this car so he earned it. Anyway there are phots I would like to share with you , etc.
