I love my TL-R!! Although modifications are really needed to get the most out of the bike and make it 100%! While “most” will enjoy the ride on the street, a few modifications and upgrades make it even better, and safer!!

I fitted the Maxton damper and a Hyperpro rising rate spring and the bike was better, but I then fitted a modified swing arm that is 26mm longer. This transformed the handling and made it much more stable, which for road use meant I could dispense with the steering damper.

They made the wheelbase just a little too short and that caused all the fuss, they should have done what honda did with the VTR 1000 and just copied the wheelbase rake and trail of the 916....

Had 1 for ten years,'98 model with factory steering damper, absolutely nothing wrong with this bike handling wise, mine was bog standard & it never put a foot wrong, good handling not brilliant, all sensationalist crap about "handling problems",build quality, durability & reliability was another matter, definatly built 2 a price but when running right a fantastic bike, beware of the dreaded frame crack.

Graham Smith Dreaded frame? 😯 Can it snap? I'm looking at the moment on a 98' tl1000s but I'm a bit afraid now with the rear damper and center front fork bearing..

Ohlins rear on mine with hyperpro fork springs, scorpion system and pc2 , goes like stink for a 16yr old bike and keeps up with all the new bikes on the rd but mine sounds better ;)

Plenty more classic sports bikes out there to chose from without this bother.

Interviewer should shut up trying to sound like he knows what he's talking about and let Jeff Stone the expert speak and actually inform us.
