  • Hi all,
A couple of weeks ago I started a basic service on my lawn mower, this soon turned into a full engine rebuild! Here is a video of the finished engine and some pictures of the work caried out.
    Enjoy...

Just bought this engine myself. Thanks for the video.

    Nice one!
If all is well, your jets don't need to be open much. Glad it's running well now. I set my Suffolk engines up so they have to run on choke for about a minute, they go like a dream once running hot.

Excellent description of work on the engine. thoroughly enjoyed it. I have 2 mowers with similar engines. Love this old technology!

I think it's great these are being rebuilt and given a new life

Thank you. These engines suffer from wear in the throttle spindle, if it's badly worn it will draw air in through there. I would be tempted to take your carb apart and very carefuly blow through all the jets and ensure they are clear. If it's not set up right it won't tick over either.

I just rifled through my box of pipe fittings, I used a male 1/2"(think it's half) to 15mm compression fitting 90 degree fitting and a short length of copper pipe....
Just beware that copper exhausts react with the fumes to create some quite nasty gases,so one for running outside at all times!

yeah check your main jet tube is clear, it's ever so easy for them to get blocked. I went through 3 carbs before I found a good one for this engine, I keep meaning to try and make some bushings for the spare carbs on the lathe, could sell them on then.

    Thanks Joseph.
I run newly rebuilt engines on two stroke mix just to make sure everything gets plenty of oil, I've honed the bore so it will just help the rings bed in a little more gently. The other reason, especialy in the case of this mower is so that the inside of the fuel tank gets a coating of oil and doesn't rust over winter.

I will have a look, the carb has been apart and cleaned many times before. It ran well after I removed the sheered oil splasher which was sitting in the sump, dont know why. I had to over fill the oil quite alot so what was left of the splasher would reach the oil, I did try to replace it but it wouldn't budge but I will give it another go, It needs a rebuild and I have a spare suffolk in bits so that would be possible.

I've just finished editing again now.....
It's funny really, I'm an electrician/maintenance engineer but I don't get on with electronics...the two do not go hand in hand!

Ok thanks Phil, I might give it a go one day.

You are correct, but if it's just for an hour or so it will give you no trouble.
This mower was run on TVO for two summers and hasn't had a rebuild in about 20 years, it's no wonder an inlet valve seized up! It gave me a good excuse to strip it down and tinker...
    Merry Christmas, all the best,
    Phill.

Thank you, I had edited up the next video yesterday and my PC crashed and lost it all.....I'll try again today.

Runs lovely! Unlike my Colt, it wont idle, although I did get it running well a couple of times. The carb has been adjusted many times and it doesn't help. I might get rid of it to make room for a new engine.

    Hi Phil,
Got my Suffolk running well now, it took me about a year but I got there. I cleaned the manifold and gasket area to ensure a good seal, it wouldn't idle off choke but would rev and it was the oposite when on choke. You'd think I had to turn to screw out to provide a richer mixture but no, I had to have them half a turn out, strange. Anyway, the engine idles low and revs very high and sounds like an old motorbike! I will try to upload a video.
    Henry

How did you fit the straight pipe exhaust? I'd like to do the same.

Hi my friend give me a Suffolk Colt that's was sitting in his garage for well over 10 years but when I put petrol in it ,the petrol comes out from the bottom of the carb where the choke lever is also can you let me know the procedure on starting one of these and also do I have to put 2 stroke mix in it every time.

It sounds like the float in the carburetor has stuck. Its always best to stop the engine by turning off the fuel, you will avoid such trouble this way. Modern petrol contains ethanol which builds up in the carburetor over time. Best remove the carburetor and give it a thorough clean, carefully blowing the jets through to clear them - poking with wire will ruin them. It's a very simple carb to service. To start, turn on fuel, prime carburetor by pressing the "tickler" button. Close the choke and half open the throttle. Once running, open the choke as soon as you can and keep it running. Just make sure drive is disengaged, else the machine will take off.... Ordinary unleaded is fine, I just run a tank of two stroke fuel with any engine that has just been rebuilt.

i always say its bad to run a four stroke on 2 stroke mix all that carbon around the valves a guy once droped a mower of to be repaired it ran awfull i only relised why when he said he used to put a drop of silcoline in the tank because he liked the smell but all the eccess carbon scored the bore :(
