  • A long video, but I hope you'l find it interesting....
I wanted to show all the stages in the rebuild of one of these small Suffolk Iron Foundry Engines, they make a brilliant first engine. In this video you can see the complete disassembly of a 98cc 98G14 build in the 1960's. This engine hasn't run in over 30 years so you can see removal of seized and rusted parts as well.
When running, the engine is to be fixed to a steel base plate and paired up with a Broom & Wade compressor.

This is going to be an excellent series for anyone working on a Suffolk for the first time... for those like me whom have taken more of these apart then I can remember its interesting to see how others tackle these little engines. How we take things apart in different orders etc and how we go about working on em.
Ive been quite lucky with those exhausts. Managed to get two out intact.
Looking forward to the second part mate. Cheers, Dan

    Top video Phil! Very informative.
Whenever I've removed Suffolk flywheels they've been a right pig to get off, I had to use the starter pulley as a home made puller using a 2p coin on the shaft behind the pulley, screw the pulley on tight and then I had to apply some heat and after a while they just pop off. You got lucky with your flywheel!

I do enjoy these longer videos that you make such as these and the Lister D type de-coke ones. They're very helpful indeed :).

    Thanks Henry!
Never had any trouble myself, but I did once have to use a home made puller on one of the latter alloy engines. It does say in the manual to use the starter pulley, but I've just never needed too, must have done 8 or more of the iron engines now.
keep saying I'll move away from old lawn mower engines, but they still find space in my shed.

Thank you! Your engines does sound nice, your right, those Briggs silencers are as near to the originals as you can get now. If someone started manufacturing the originals they would make a mint...

I always find the crankcase breather/valve springs the hardest part on any Suffolk engine, the most fiddly part for sure

Man you were making me nervous when you were knocking the cam shaft out! I was waiting for you to miss and take a good piece of the crankcase off.....that's what i would have done for sure!!

Great video! Rebuilt a whole Suffolk by following this series! Thankyou mate. Silly question, what's the soft faced hammer you use? The nylon faced ones are rubbish on mowers and don't last

They can sometimes be had on ebay. But they fetch good money, even when there rusty as hell... if they break i normally replace them with modern 'briggs style' exhausts from china. And the occasional length of copper pipe lol
The Briggs 'angled' exhaust give a similar note to that of the old style exhaust fitted to this engine.
    Cheers, Dan

Hi. Great video there, its nice to see a good methodical stripdown of these engines. I agree with MO3MINI regarding the exhausts, the old sausage ones were the best but decent ones are hard to come by now - for realistic prices anyway! The modern Briggs type do sound quite similar and are fairly cheap, which is what I fitted to mine via some 3/4" plumbing fittings - Check out my Suffolk Punch video and skip to about 1:02 to hear the exhaust.
    Cheers, Jon

Bigger bore and longer stroke I believe, I've got a spare connecting rod for a 75cc so I'll do a comparison.
More head studs on the 98G14, other than that their the same.

    Thanks.
You might be able to get away with re tapping the thread, you'l need some thread gauges and then the correct die. You could, if it's only at the very end, get someone with a lathe to just turn off the mushroomed part.

Yes, just when you think it's in.....*TWANG*.....and your left scratching around on the floor looking for all the bits.

Ah ok, well I'll keep an eye out. I have got a new stub pipe and tuna can shape silencer so I might use that if all else fails.....either that or some 3/4" iron pipe.......

Ha ha! It would take more than that to break an old Suffolk engine....
I've actualy just bought another one of these engines, but it's a little different. The next project is another French engine so it will be a restoration for next summer I expect.

Thank you for a great series of videos! I have just picked the same kind of engine apart. Do you have any god information about where to find gaskets for it? Best regards Pär.

What are the differences between this and the 75cc version? Other than this being bigger

Can anyone help me? I can’t get the flywheel off the shaft and I’m worried that if I knock it any harder I’m going to break something or damage the thread. Thanks
