  • Welcome to GamingSins, where I nitpick the hell out of video games.
A lot of people consider Mass Effect 2 the best game in the whole series. That might be true as far as character development, but as far as the actual main plot goes, that's a completely different story. So, here are its sins.
Special thanks to Kryptice for her help in this. I promised I'd shout her out and I keep my promises.

Sin 179: The reason the Reaper Ship has a decontamination chamber and a Cerberus logo is because there was a Cerberus science team investigating the derelict reaper and trying to reverse engineer reaper technology. please explain

    • @Ebalosus
      @Ebalosus 7 років тому +123

ugly bastard the original big twist™ was that the Mass Effect fastens the heat death of the universe, and the reapers were trying to find a solution to the problem, hence why they periodically killed off life: to slow the accumulation of dark energy. The original ending of ME3 would have been a choice between turning humanity into a reaper that *will* finally solve the dark energy problem, or destroy the reapers and *hope* that a solution is found within the near future.
In me and my friends view, it's better than what we got, but stupid in its own right, because A) it turns the reapers into the protagonists who could've at any time said _"stop! The mass effect fastens the heat death of the universe!"_ and B) resolves a plot that was only introduced in the second game a la Marty not liking being called "chicken" in Back to the Future parts 2 and 3.

Yeah, it really isn't all much better than the Starbrat ending. I mean, why would the Reapers leave tech that uses dark energy and leave it laying around for organic life to find if it hastens the end of the galaxy? Fans seem to think it would have been great, but even DK said that it was never fleshed out, and it was just an idea.
The Reapers should have never been given motives in the first place, nor should their origins been explored. They were awesome as these Lovecraftian beings, rather than misunderstood protagonists.

    • @Haley123ful

Evan Robertson wasn’t there something about reapers killing all Biotics and not all galactic life as a solution to the Dark energy problem?

  • @Darkmirror7
    @Darkmirror7 7 років тому +238

The reason the collectors went for Shepard specifically is because Shepard got the Reapers attention after ME1, so it would make sense to eradicate the biggest threat asap. Also the disease/plague thing and Vorcha: It is mentioned that both humans and Vorcha are immune to the plague, that's why the Vorche are distributing it, they are immune and get paid for it. Also you CAN go through the Omega 4 relay without the Reaper IFF, but the Reaper IFF makes the jump more precise, which is vital if you dont want to get warped into a black hole or something in the centre of the galaxy. Normally a deviation from the jump target is normal, but that deviation would prove fatal at a instable location like that. Though i am surprised you didn't sin the Human Reaper itself, i mean literally every reaper has the very same shell but then humans are special enough to get their own version because.. why not?

    • @thesunisup_
      @thesunisup_ 7 років тому +37

Yaibatsu About the human reaper. It's not the shell, it is the reaper itself. Every reaper has its own unique form based on the species that were processed to make it alive while the squid-like thing we are used to see is a shell, like an exoskeleton

I completely agree with the sin towards the romance-sequence, especially Garrus's. Don't get me wrong, I always romance Garrus, and his scene is adorable and it really shows how much we all love him as a character.
But are you telling me, that Jack, Miranda, Jacob, Thane, Tali and even f*cking KELLY get more of an actual romance-scene then Garrus Vakarian?! At least they get make-out sessions, Garrus gets a fucking fade-to-black!
My inner fan-girl rage is made even more aggressive when I take into consideration how the games deliberately try to overbearingly push onto you that Liara is supposed to be the ultimate love interest. From her ham-fisted, creepy as fuck, all-of-a-sudden fixation on Shepard in the first game, to her distant yet somewhat-tragic relationship and need to get Shepard's body to Cerberus in Mass Effect 2, to her being in the centre of some key plot points in 3 over other characters and also her overly-long sex-scene compared to other characters' in Mass Effect 3.
Look, I get it. A lot of people love Liara, but for those of us who want equal quality for the hot piece of Turian ass? We ain't interested in the blue bitch. Give me more Calibrations, damnit!

17:19 Something funny that just occurred to me: today, in real life, soldiers carry equipment that can record everything they encounter. Police officers even have cameras attached to their cars and in some places a very small one on their chest.

"Why is there a logo on a Reaper ship... Why is a Reaper ship designed this way?... "Why aren't they researching the derelict Reaper?" Facepalm! They ARE studying it! Cerberus sent out a research team who built a habitable section attached to, and eventually into, the Reaper! They were trying to study it but due to the close vicinity to still active Reaper systems and the active contact with Reaper artifacts they ended up indoctrinated. This and the Cloning facility on Virmire are why Shepard and her lot know so much about indoctrination! And the dragons teeth DO turn people into husks. That's where all those HUMAN based husks came from! They were the research team and the still human bodies were the last to die and are in the middle of the conversion process. Headdesk
Also, the IFF is not so you can use the Omega Relay, it's to activate a field on the other side to protect you from the gravity effects from numerous black holes. That's why they didn't bother with many defenses, most ships were instantly pulled apart the moment they entered it.
Also Numero Dos: Joker received synthetic implants in his legs as part of his deal with Cerberus to join them. This strengthened his legs and took the pressure of walking off his brittle bones somewhat and helps him to be able to walk around without snapping a bone if he forgoes crutches.

Not only that, but most of their only variance was their colors, their effectiveness in battle & which mods you gave them. Meaning, if you started a new campaign with an imported Level 60 save, you unlock all the X level armors & weapons as you play. So, all that inventory space getting used up for weapons & armor, only for you to end up converting most of it to omni-gel.

Also, why would Cerberus even put its own colors on the Normandy? What if someone whose friend died on Akuze recognized the symbol and took a shot at you...come to think of it, maybe that disables the ship and Shepard and squad leave to find components to fix it. I sin the killing of Shepard in the opening for a very simple reason; it was completely unnecessary.
All they had to do was emphasize the council burying the reaper threat. Have Cerberus approach Shepard with some kind of recording with the council discussing ways of silencing Shepard and sweeping the Reaper threat under the rug, then explaining that while they don't see eye to eye, they do agree that stopping the collectors and the reapers is far more important and if the council won't do it, they will.
Even if Shepard hates Cerberus, there is no way they would ignore the collectors and reaper threat when everyone else is busy trying to keep them gagged and bogged down with pointless bitchwork to hinder their investigation. It could be a temporary alliance not a permanent one. Have the council and the alliance turn down Shepard's request to go investigate the collector threat further when they are first approached by Cerberus in order to back up what they've told him/her. There. Boom. Problem fucking solved without idiotic resurrection bullshit.

    • @jerkopatrik
      @jerkopatrik 5 років тому +11

I don't think the actual reason Bioware decided to go with the killing part was because they could not tell the story of Shepard's side change in any other way, but because of the first game's characters having those 2 years to develop. Wrex becoming Clan Urdnot's leader, Garrus leading an anti-crime organization on Omega, Ashley/Kaidan getting stationed on Horizon, Liara becoming a very distinguished information broker and Tali going back to the Flottila to be the leading engineer of a squad, which takes on a mission regarding highly concerning Dark Energy activity. These characters have developed massively during those 2 years, and while I understand KidAtari's comments on Shepard not changing at all, I don't think it's a fair sin since he/she was literally dead, and this is why I think BioWare went with the simplest and probably dumbest choice. They could have just said that the SR1 Normandy squad members left the ship because of the lack of missions or any kind of activity, and after Shepard living in denial from the Alliance regarding the Reaper threat he/she has grown ties with Cerberus, going after their old squad mates... again. I don't know, I'm no writer to tell ME2's beginning in a different manner but surely BioWare could have done better. Like with ME3's original ending, which expands upon the Dark Energy plot revealed during Tali's recruitment mission. Wish they had stayed with that option, sounds much more interesting than the StarBrat...

"So the Collectors what the Vorcha to distribute a plague that kills every species except humans, and yet the Vorcha are going to kill humans to prevent them from distributing a cure to said plague."
      1) The Vorcha are getting PAID to distribute the plague AND, presumably, to stop anyone from distributing a cure.
      2) Asking for logic from a Vorcha for logic is downright laughable, considering EVERYONE considers the Vorcha to be barely sapient, bipedal bugs.
      3) The Vorcha are, and this is important, IMMUNE TO ALL DISEASES! They have nothing to fear from this plague.

This is one of the few games I can go back and play a million times and never get tired of it. The gameplay. The story. The characters (minus Jacob). The suicide mission is one of the best missions in any game I have ever played. It's a rare moment when all of that time and work you put into the characters actually pays off. You don't just go into it with two other squad mates while all of the other characters sit on the ship doing nothing. Those characters mean something, and they actually help you accomplish your goal.
The only bad thing about this game is how they really dumbed down the RPG elements. Other than that, this game ticks all of the boxes.

There are many, many, *many* instances where you didn't even bother to listen or pay attention, but here's a brief rundown of... well, mostly everything else:
    [Wall of Text]
    6:00
I mean, if you're going to completely ignore all the parts of armour you can collect throughout the game by conveniently moving off the page where you can see that you can build your own armour... Also, a great deal more than "This armor is a different colour to this armour and has slightly better/worse stats" of ME1.
    6:12
Almost as if they got rid of all those useless, annoying pointsinks that were tied to weapons you didn't use or crap like charm/intimidate. Hell, powers were buggy as fuck in ME1 anyway; tech powers didn't work half the time and biotics were overpowered as fuck.
    7:15
    What is: Flippancy
    12:15
Yeah, that system in ME1 where every gun in that class was basically the same but used one of two (three if you got lucky and got a late game Geth Pulse Rifle) models for the weapon type was so much better!
    13:10
You yourself ME2 isn't strictly RPG though, and you're playing combat classes that have gun specialisations. What do you expect? Also, upgrades you buy are automatically researched, you don't have to research them; so fail on two points.
    13:30
Yes, because trusting someone who you don't know gunned down a bunch of mercenaries and vorcha is a great idea. Why don't we all do it? What is disbelief?
    14:10
You are literally told by several people that Vorcha are immune to the plague before this guy shows up, c'mon.
    15:40
He is also a Batarian, what do you expect? They're not fucking paragons of virtue
    18:20
They literally grounded the Normandy in ME1 because you wouldn't drop going after Saren into the Terminus Systems, how is that not taking action.
    19:40
"in a utility pod" which obviously meant she's not on foot.
    20:00
    You can shoot her.
    21:20
Almost like she's not the most powerful known human biotic in the galaxy or something
    23:40
It's still a human colony, though. They have a duty to protect them from pirates and the like.
    24:00
Except they're not doing it for the sake of suspected collectors but rather arming colonies on the border of the Terminus Systems, which is literally Space Pirate Hub of the Galaxy, to protect them from pirates. Because they're obligated to do so because they're human colonies. They also believe Cerberus are behind the collector abductions, as evidenced later on not a fucking minute later from Kaidan's exposition fountain.
    26:30
Is this, like, self deprecating SJW humour or something? "MMM nice booty but grrrr you filthy perverts for modelling Miranda's ass so tight how base and disgusting reeeeee"
You can't run with the wolves and hunt with the hounds. Pick a side and stick to it.
    28:30
    Start of the game:
    "Where's Liara, Illusive Man?"
    "She's working on Illium."
    On Illium:
"Yo so Liara I'm gonna need you to drop everything you're doing to help me save the galaxy."
    "Nah I'm busy fam."
    "Grr >: ("
Was this unexpected? Illusive Man said they'd moved on, and you can get exposition of this at the start of the game, what did you expect?
    29:30
But they're genetically alike though, so they are twins. They're not twins in the sense most people know that they were born at the same time, but they're genetically alike. That still makes them twins.
    30:30
You didn't get hit, you had no shields already, the warp hit the cover in front of you, Shepard didn't grunt in pain or stagger and your screen didn't redden further, so you took no damage... but okay, you got hit there. Occasionally the game will make it look as though you're peeking out and then enemy gunfire hitting or going close over the cover will make you quickly retract your head. It's a passive action common to most games in the series.
    32:40
LMAO you praised the Hammerhead "gameplay", the one vehicle worse than the Mako in all of gaming history. Definitely no accounting for taste.
    34:20
"UGH THOSE DISGUSTING PERVERTS MODELLING MIRANDA'S ASS SO WELL I FIND IT HOT HOW DISGUSTING WHAT MOUTHBREATHERS REEEE."
    10 minutes later:
    "WHY CAN'T I TEABAG CORPSES"
    38:00
What do you expect? The galaxy is basically in full denial at this point that the reapers are on their way; some shaky-cam footage from someone who is working with Cerberus isn't going to sway them.
    38:20
Which is why you can choose to not do her loyalty mission! This isn't immersion breaking at all.
    39:00
It's Cerberus, they don't care about that sort of shit. See also: Rachni experiments, Thorian Creeper experiments, Husk experiments and all the other shady stuff they were doing in ME1 and 2.
    39:50
I mean, they're on the Citadel, their shields are probably down. Does seem kinda unrealistic though.
    41:50
Not sure what you mean here cause they're a staple of all ME games but ok
    43:00
Did you ignore everything the illusive man said before Reaper IFF or something? He said there was a team there, which means they probably installed stuff to make them travel around the reaper easier.
    43:15
If you knock a computer hard enough it'll probably break or at the least suffer function disruptions, so why is this an issue or disbelievable?
    45:00
It's clear what they mean by that, jesus christ. They'll infiltrate the program by planting agents in the program and exert influence on it; furthering Cerberus goals. It's literally in black and white in hologram form.
    47:30
They tell you they got in through the cargo bay; but in any case they have control of the Normandy through the virus in the reaper IFF, so does it matter? They weren't going to suddenly materialise in the Normandy either way, do you need to be spoonfed things?
    48:50
Yes, they should just rush Afterlife with all their guns and shoot Morinth to death instead! Or why not just fire the Thanix Cannon at Omega instead?! That's a much better plan!
    50:00
[conveniently edits out the "I'm as strong as my mother, let me join you instead!" line to force point]
It's a dick choice, but then again, so is pushing people out of windows. /shrug
    52:00
Tali is a greasy suit rat, what do you expect
    53:20
Not paying attention once again! It's stated several times but no less in the DESCRIPTION FOR THE FUCKING RELAY that several ships have gone through and not come back. And then you see they're all destroyed. Conclusion: You need the IFF to pass through safely. Not rocket science. Or maybe it actually technically is.
    53:45
Yeah I mean it's almost like locking a relay to only let your ship transfer to the destination point through safely and anyone else who tries gets destroyed by black hole or debris field isn't a large enough defence in the first place, is it? The Oculi manages to do significant damage to the cargo bay so it's not exactly harmless either.
    54:00
I get the feeling you'd whine that there was a sudden gameplay shift but sure, make condescending remarks all you want
    54:45
The fireteam leader clearly shows them directing suppressing fire to aid the tech expert to do their job in the "success" cutscene. Failing it shows the Collectors easily advancing on your position. Picking a non-suitable one means the tech expert is harassed by the advance of Collector forces, whether due to inability to do the job correctly in time (not a proper tech expert) or too many collectors firing at them (not a good leader) and therefore they die.
It's not a flaw, you fucked up and you pay the price for fucking up in the Suicide Mission.
    55:20
Miranda is the only one who does this and it's due to a glitch; a non-loyal Garrus or Jacob will get shot and die if picked for the second fireteam section. You wish you were making it up but you *are* actually making it up.
    55:45
What do you think they did with all the corpses of the previous harvests? They preserve them via reaper form. Lesser species become destroyers, greater ones become capital ships. You're told it's not a fully formed reaper yet and that this is it's core, a larva.

Jacob is an honest to god awful character, I kinda like him but he is horribly written, for the O4R he understood it as the relay's location itself being unmapped rather than the destination, mistake on his part, as for #546 he was right when he said Omega, Omega is a standalone faction, the Terminus Systems are pretty much the wild west of the milky way, #171 there are no repair drones on board the Normandy, the only personnel being Joker and EDI and the ship took heavy damage and crash landed on a megabase, the only halfway reasonable explanation is that the crew that returned repaired it (even then, it gets repaired way too fast, and that only makes sense IF they survive on the way back and most of them survive).

I have to argue that making the Reapers organic/tech hybrids was a good choice lorewise. Husks are monsters, Reapers are a much more 'evolved' husk. They are doing what they know and incapable of any more.
The dark energy subplot was supposed to be the key point of game 3, but EA said fuck that, Illusive Man will be the primary villain because potatoes.

Illusive man isn't a primary villain though, he's a secondary antagonist. And making the Reapers hybrids is iffy at best. Reapers aren't a "much more evolved husk". The Reapers are individual synthetics created and directed by the master AI (starchild/Leviathan AI) with genetic material from the most evolved race of each cycle to "preserve" that race, but most (99.99%) of their function is synthetic. They view organic life as weak and are built to "protect" it. Husks are former organics (specifically humans) who have their body gradually replaced by synthetic components as they are impaled on the dragon's teeth and are also lacking in any form of intelligence. Completely different.

5:50 was admittedly a major screw-up: ME1 creates the carry-over save file at the moment when you pick whether to save the council or not. When Bioware realized this ridiculous mistake, they put this questioning scene in ME2 because this piece of information is actually missing from the imported save file.

  • @QrazyQuarian
    @QrazyQuarian 7 років тому +17

55:40. This is what I mean by EA rewriting the Reapers. They irrevocably retcon-nuked the greatest threat in the existence of storytelling. When Sovereign was explaining the Reapers to Shepard, he described them as beings with no beginning whose existence is beyond organic comprehension. Their purpose for harvesting us every 50,000 years is incomprehensible to us even if they tried to explain in great detail. That explanation was too deep for some players, and EA thought that the Reapers would be better explained by the cliche and just plain stupid "we destroy organic life to save it from itself" plot device, and now have a simpler (but stupider) origin story. Bioware created a race of villains that was elevated so far above what was thought up in traditional storytelling, I spent countless hours over several years wondering how I was supposed to beat them. The original Reaper concept caused my imagination to explode and intimidated me more than any other villain in existence. And then EA came along and said, "Nope, too complex. We need more shooty-shoot and less sci. fi. amazingness. Oh, and make sure you get rid of unlimited ammo. We need to retcon that too."
And I HATE that "Sovereign was just talking trash to you" excuse. There is no justification for a retcon-nuke of this magnitude. The Reapers, by ME3, were utterly destroyed.

Intelligent weapons to eliminate sapient competition (explains the regular wiping) and establish dominance (explains the terrorism), their creators either dead or out of sight (explains no one seems in charge), and designed as blind delusional fanatics so they won't question their purpose and turn (explains the superiority and inevitability speech).

I know this is suuuuper late but just wanted to give my opinion on this. The inherent flaw with the reaper's motivation to be beyond organic comprehension is that it was bullshit from the start. For one, that explanation was just used by writers as a placeholder because they didn't know the reapers' motivations at the time, but they still wanted to create a mystery surrounding said motivation. Secondly, having set up that mystery so early in the story, there was always going to be an expectation for that mystery to be solved, thus, they couldn't keep it vague forever. Thirdly (and more importantly), it's borderline impossible for a writer to conceive of a motivation or idea that is supposed to be beyond our own comprehension and in turn beyond that writer's comprehension. It was simply inevitable that the Reapers would have to be dumbed down to some extent because the mystery they set up was impossible to fully deliver on.

@@wayothefro3249 I disagree on all of it. You might as well say that Cthulhu is bullshit, yet everyone seems to worship that idea. Beyond organic comprehension gives us a sense of fear, like how we use aliens as a foreign fear we can scarcely comprehend. Part of what makes us afraid of aliens we can't communicate with us, the fear of the dark, fear of ghosts, etc. is that they are unknowable. In a universe where we have made contact with the stars, with dozens of alien species, it becomes difficult to establish aliens as scary. I mean, take a look at the Khett in the same universe! Boring, not scary, mainly just a half-assed annoyance in a half-assed story. Where ME 1 blew my 15 year-old mind in 2006, ME: A completely underwhelmed me because it lacked that unknowable alien quality. The Borg are scary because their logic is terrifying and completely alien, a comprehension beyond our understanding. For instance, they have no problem with Starfleet beaming aboard their ships, where any other race would shit their pants and apply maximum force to deal with the intruder alert; however, the Borg just don't apply that alien logic. They assimilate to a fault, and ironically refuse to adapt beyond assimilation when they need to, such as with their war against Species 8472 when they couldn't physically assimilate them.
In similar veins, the Reapers are an existence beyond what we understand with mortal minds and mortal eyes. The Reapers challenge our understanding of the universe, which is completely okay in storytelling! They are a metascience beyond what we can comprehend. They were born outside of linear space and time, beyond the curtain of the universe. I do not understand why nobody accepts this idea. It's a cool concept worth exploring. We know that there are limitations to what we can understand with this concept, but it is playing with the boundaries of such concepts that allows us to advance the genre. If we didn't have people exploring beyond what we thought was possible, we wouldn't have Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, or any of your favorite stories and genres. This idea behind the Reapers is not bullshit, it's not impossible. It is only those things if you allow it. The fact that they exist, and the fact that back in 2006 that is what made the game so mind-blowing, is proof enough that the idea worked. The fact that the writers caved and made them infinitely the original idea's lesser is a damn shame, and if you don't think so then that's your fucking loss.

Hey, don't forget the fact that after Shepard wakes up, he's up to date about thermal clips - even though the Codex entry explains it was developed in the meantime after finding out the Geth used them (if my memory serves me well).

In ME3 we learn combat armor boots have maglocks or something that help keep them walking on structures with no gravity. Actually you see it see in ME1 also when Saren shuts down the citadel elevators and Shepard and team have to break it open and walk around to the central control station.

Exploded head and headshot with no collateral damage absolutely coincide with each other. Collateral damage is damage beyond the target of the attack. So collateral would have meant the round going through the Merc's head and into one of the workers.

You do know that Shep has Mag-boots, right? Which is shown again in ME3 when they go on the Geth Dreadnaught. Also Jacob even says slab of meat on a table aka Shep is not intact. Except for bits in the helmet. Also they used clones to give her parts that were missing.
