For someone who wants a "base" full size truck and their in it for the long haul - for longevity it's not a terrible thing that your getting a slightly detuned version of the twin turbo V6.
I like this truck. Toyota tuned it for reliability and longevity like the famous GX/Tundra V8 301 hp 4.6L and snuck in the same safety features as the top lines. Two things kill it for me as an off-roader: no option for locking rear differential, and a 22-gallon gas tank with no option for 32/38. With Toyota's conservative fuel tank warnings, this means your gas light goes off at like 300 miles in city driving, 375 on the highway. Although, both of those could be added after-market :D Cool truck, great work as always Jeff.
I purchased a brand new 07 off the lot. Best 34k I've ever spent. Now has 282k running great. The only problem is it hard on tires. On the fifth set. They need to make tires last longer.
Very good points made! I had not realized the towing capacity was so drastically cut for the base model. You’re video has me reevaluating things. Very helpful.
I like your enthusiasm, I don't like when the tail gait is down, you can't use the corner of the bumper to step up into the bed. They went with form over function with that. They do have a lot of nice features considering it's an SR. I'll stick with my 07 for now.
Yep, I have to admit I was expecting the MSRP's to be WAY higher than they are!! Very nice!! I do agree to WAIT at least until August or so before buying one to help Toyota mitigate some of the issues that have popped up....which is smart even with Toyota's...this generation has a HUGE amount of changes, probably the most-ever for Tundra!! Any news on how they are selling?
Nice video Jeff. This seems like a bargain for a full size crew max truck. I bet most people will spring for the higher trims. This is a perfect clean slate for anyone who may want to modify there’s.
Forgot to mention the SR engine makes it power at lower RPM so it still feels frisky. And forgot to mention SR 2WD gets the best highway fuel economy of all the Toyota models. Too bad no test drive was included.
I wish there were more of these SR's available. My local Toyotas has a SR 4x4 Crew Max "in transit" with a MSRP of $43K (plus $2K markup)! This blows away any other comparable pickup out there today. Once this truck hits the lot, it will be sold probably within an hour.
I think a better comparison for this engine would be to put it up against the old bas 4.6 v8 Even though it was discontinued in 2020. The sr v6 exceeds that engine in both power and torque
Hi Jeff! The less power and torque doesn't matter to me as I don't tow, but I will need a bed that's useful: I haul hay for horses, but never large enough amounts that I need a trailer. Everything else is window dressing; I have a 2005 Tundra and have never driven anything particularly luxurious (Although my grandmother has a fully loaded 2016 Mazda CX-5) so whatever luxury it doesn't have is not something I'm going to miss. It already is more powerful and has more torque than the 4.7 V8, and while my truck's previous owner modernized it with a touch screen head unit and a backup camera, it's a 2005 vs. a 2022. I mentioned to you some time ago wondering if the SR had nine speakers in it (though I may have been on my mobile account). From what I understand is, every Crewmax tundra does. My 2005 has a JBL system with 8 speakers, so this base SR already beats it. I'm willing to bet the audio engineering is better, too. Bit of a shame Toyota doesn't offer the hybrid at all trim levels the way Ford does for their Powerboost - I imagine that without all the extra features the I-force Max would give better mpg - but that's only speculative. The SR more than meets my needs - now just to get the cash to afford one. Even base models are expensive these days.
After cross shopping the ‘24 F150 and Tundra SR5, TRD trims- finally went with the base “contractor special” SR in black. Couldn’t justify extra $10k for a few extra HP, wheels and rarely used features. There’s a lot included on the base SR. Out the door for just over $41k- very happy with it so far. Will likely add rims/tires when the stockers are worn out. Added a step bar for $150 and fender flares for $80. It’s a personal choice, but for me, SR is a good value for the money.
SR's on the last generation had the gear shift on the steering wheel instead of where the 6th seat would be, really disappointed to see them move away from that. Also, the double cab option has less backseat leg room in the back, those two things are the big turn offs for me. I'd love to see a doable cab comparison from a 21 and a 22
@@andybub45 of course. Not prideful but proud. We have to have pride in the way we carry ourselves. It helps our self esteem and ability to succeed in life. Cheers Andrew!
It sucks. I was looking to get a new tundra for the front jump seat since I put my dog there... Have to look at other brands 😢. It's a truck not a sports car!
In Wisconsin, any hybrid vehicle you need to understand that you have to pay annually $85 dollars surcharge extra plus sticker per year. So this is the way to go for starters. We all knew that with this full size truck it's got to have the 4.0L engine in it. Why not?
I wouldn’t even heasitate to hook the max towing capacity up to this truck regardless of the numbers. The only reason the numbers are lower is the power rating.. just means it will be a little bit slower.
Hey Jeff, Tony here and I grew up here in Raleigh, My brother has the 2016 1794 and i would like to get the 2022. Still have no ideas on when one will be here to test drive let alone buy. Do you prefer the gas or the hybrid ? Thanks Tony
It seems like good value when comparing it to a fully loaded Tacoma. I prefer the looks and size of the Tacoma, but saw a video on how the backseat space is small with car seats.
If I needed to buy another full size, this is the truck and trim package I would take a chance on. The few things I wish it had was a sliding rear window for long pieces of wood like trim, a tow haul mode or the ect button, and Manuel seat height adjustment. The only downside I see is maintenance on the engine dealing with the turbos, and not being able to put a plow on it because of the cooling with the turbos.

And basic features on the inside touch screen radio. And I have the 5.7 liter v8 and I love this engine I definitely prefer it over the new v6 turbo iv test drove the new tundra when I bought my 19 and I’d say I get a better ride and performance with the v8. Only this I really wanna do is new exhaust to make it sound louder and new grill that has Toyota spelled out other than that I love my 2019 sr!!
I like the truck. I am disappointed that you can't replace the bumpers with an after market bumper, such as buckstop. At least it appears like the bumpers are molded into the fenders as one piece. So can't add a winch or outfit it with bumpers that are durable.
Thought I could live with SR, but seat height adjustment a deal breaker for me. Why does the SR have less power? What was done mechanically? Less turbo boost?
It's not till you get the limited or better till height adjustable seats are included. SR5 requires packages to get power seats with adjustments Toyota really found odd places to cut cost on the new tundras.
This is the tundra i would buy, detuned engine for better reliability, less tech and doesn't look too fancy. Plus i would feel guilty spending the extra money on higher trims. I would add the trd exhaust and air filters to make it fun to drive.
