Important to keep in mind as well that Volleyball players need to be taller than average, at the pro level even 6 foot tall is considered short. So 5'2 is actually absurdly short for a non libero.

5'2 is absurdly short even for liberos, no pro libero is that short. As a 178 MB I do believe in the power of jump, but truth is I can't reach certains hights, so I need to run like hell and most important (and this is why I think hinata is so amazing), the mental stress I feel when I face a huge MB and somehow stop and beat him, it really is a lot, you feel the pressure so hard as an MB in the air, cause it's mostly one on one
I know, like in the national team of my country the libero is 184 cm which is pretty tall but compared to the rest of the players he looks like Hinata next to Tsuki XD
In case you didn't already know, this series has pun names too! I'll just summarize the first years for now:
Hinata Shoyo: the 'hi' and 'yo' characters can be read as 'sunshine/sun', and the 'sho' character means 'to soar/fly'
Kageyama Tobio: 'kage' means 'shadow', and the 'to' character also means 'to fly'
Tsukishima Kei: 'tsuki' means 'moon' and 'shima' means 'island'
Yamaguchi Tadashi: 'yama' means 'mountain' (the 'yama' in Kageyama uses the same character), and 'tadashi' means 'loyalty'
I think it's interesting to see the subtle parallels and contrasts drawn between characters solely through the juxtaposition of their names!
Mari not only that but I heard that hinata has something in it that means Sun so that's the opposite to Tsuki's moon but I won't say more for spoilers. I could be wrong though.
Dex you’re right. His name is Hinata Shouyou (Last name, first name) written as 日向翔陽. The author was nice in that she put his characteristics in his name 日 means sun, and 向(かう) means to face or meet the other person face to face. His first name, 翔 means to fly and run with wings. The second kanji, 陽 also literally means sunlight, the place the sunlight touches. (Note 太陽 also means sun too). Unlike the naruto character names, these Haikyuu names aren’t that rare. For example, the “Shou” in “Shouyou” is a common boy name, especially since a national idol’s name is also “Shou”

Haikyuu is one of the more realistic sport animes out there, btw. Everything they do are actual existing volleyball plays and tactics, except the quick they do here (which is technically also POSSIBLE and not total bs but still not done)
You see just a glimpse of it in this episode, but Hinata and Kageyama compliment each other as players more than just by their skill-sets. Kageyama is very very demanding of his team, to his own detriment as you saw. Hinata however, is someone who is willing to work to meet those demands because he just loves playing Volleyball, and he loves giving his all even more-so.
And on the opposite side of things, Hinata is someone who needs something to strive for, which Kageyama gives him in spades. Like Suga (Osu) said, Hinata has loads of potential, something that Kageyama's demanding personality and high base talent helps to bring out.

Kageyama wants a team that gives them their all which he gets in Karasuno but also learns that demanding isn't the right way but more like forging believe and trust in the teams gets the "demand" to happen.

The underdog story is definitely my favorite kind of story. You can all say it's overused but when it's executed perfectly it still gets me.
And 5'2 being really short.. Come down here imma punch you hahaha. Hinata is 5'4 (still frickin taller than me) Hinata has really got to rely on technique and Kageyama to get above other players. All the characters are pretty awesome and they all play their parts on the team.

I'm uh... kind of embarrassed to say this but your reaction to the first episode has been in my recommended for days and I was vehemently ignoring it bc, well, I don't really trust reactions by white boys (that sounds pretty bad but I think it's common knowledge that more often than not they're complete wastes of time) I was just kind of expecting there to be a million or so Hype-Kyuu jokes and staring at yourselves in the camera as opposed to actually watching the episode so... I was shocked to see... actual? Substance? I'm so sorry for prematurely judging you guys hHAHAHA I actually really enjoyed this thank you for actually delving into the content

My real comment is if you guys can watch most of the episode without skipping too much of it? I was real excited to see your reactions of this episode but I was hoping you would show us viewers your reaction of the time when Kageyama was showing his "amazing concentration" to the point hinata hit the ball. But what I would really like though if you guys your reaction to most of the episodes without skipping. Thanks.

when yall were talking about Hinata's jumping ability, it occurred to me that he just. jumps like that. all the time throughout the show, he doesn't even have to think about it. like sure, that's probably just because its an animated series but I prefer to think he just has incredibly powerful legs and he doesn't realize his own strength lol

Glad I started this series. Back in college I used to play a lot of intramural Ultimate Frisbee with friends and at 5' 5.5" I was able to be one of the best scorers and pretty much could catch the crazy throws. Been playing volleyball recreationally for a little now and it stinks not being able to jump high enough to get the spikes.

i think it is a great anime series. But, I also think it has a lot of good life lessons. Oh, and lets not forget, some of the intro music is nice!, specially the 2 last themes.

Actually, you need to be 30cm taller than Hinata, He is 164cm so that makes it 194cm. Rare are pro players superstars in Europe that are lower then 190cm, they are usually around 200cm. Asia has lower height average so there they can probably be pros even at 180cm.

Based off this episode, I feel like I'm going to have trouble with this show. I have no actual reason for this, it just rubbed me the wrong way. I'll probably keep watching along with you, but I may just watch your reactions without seeing the full episode. Also, Hinata's complete lack of knowledge makes no sense to me. If he's been so obsessed, he should have been watching high level play, etc. Just saying.

Well, based on my personal experience, there are people like that in real life. When I was active playing soccer in middle school there was someone that have good sense as striker, can kick ball really hard, but lack of knowledge of tactical things. He always want to be a profesional player, watched profesional football matches on TV, getting hyped while watching it, but in the end he learns nothing besides "that striker so cool!", or "he kick the ball so hard to the goal!". Giving him a tactical plan was like a waste of time. But, he always got spot as regular member, not only in our school but also on our local junior team.
Hinata is an instinct player, and not a tactician. He knows what he needs to, but what he learns comes through experience. Up until now, he has never been on a real team, been in tournaments, or played against other teams except the one in middle school. He has a serious lack of experience.
His name is not hin-it-ta, it's he-ni-ta, no hate just got kinda cringed whenever you said his name
