I really appreciate this. My first impulse after hearing your final thesis to historicize everything: how would you apply historicization to the concept itself? I suspect you're bringing this concept forward from other thinkers I'm not familiar with. Would the context surrounding that be useful to explore?

By being self-reflexive! To give a history on why you are able to give this history. For Jameson, you can only give this justice by being a Marxist of some kind. There are other ways to historicize, but I, more or less, follow Jameson in that I’m find them deficient in some ways. I do have critiques of Jameson, but they’re all from a Marxist/critical theory camp.

You touched on morality being historically shaped, and it got me thinking about moral shifts. I think we're in the beginning of a moral shift. This is just one small sign of it but I think there was a period where we were moving away from some types of humor that were more acceptable in the 2000s, we were more sensitive about certain slurs. You can see it reflected in media, both mainstream and online. The best example I can think of is the "R" word. When I was a kid people would just throw around the word "re****ed" like it was nothing and it generally wasn't a big deal. By the late 2010s that was pretty much a no-go both in media and in person in most situations. I think now that we're entering a definite reactionary period that stuff is starting to roll back. Influencers are saying it again, people irl say it pretty brazenly now, they even had Wesley Snipes say it in the last Deadpool movie. Now people saying offensive stuff isn't new but I think it's essential to pay attention to the things that will become permissive in coming years. Trump appointing sex offenders and white nationalists to the highest levels of government is certainly going to have a cultural ripple effect. People are going to become a lot more open about finding violence against women acceptable, and I generally think we're going to see a period where cruelty is considered morally neutral at worst, and I think that morality will be supplanted by more religious values

Hey mate, I happened to read a book recently that mentioned Hobbes' philosophy (a critical look into the theory, among others). It was a thoughtful collection of histories and studies of humanity- specifically, kindness - persisting in even the hardest of times of our history.
I encourage you and your readers trade their cynicism for just a little while and try the book "Humankind" by Rutger Bregman.
