    I loved how you framed the discussion about technology dependence and how “unplugging” is more of an escape than a solution. I’ve thought for a while that with everyone being hooked on algorithms and doom scrolls run by the big tech giants, they have us right where they want us. And getting away from technology and “back to roots” is the only way to overcome it. But the communication and organizing and other opportunities of technology aren’t inherently bad, and it would be a better solution to work towards democratizing and socializing technology so that it’s at the control of the masses rather than the few. I love this line of thinking too because it harkens to bigger leftist concepts like strengthening workers’ rights. It’s all so connected and I appreciate that you and others online have continued having these discussions. They’re very helpful and get us thinking in a much better direction.
    You’ve also opened me up to the pros of accelerationism slightly more despite me being hesitant to embrace it. I agree tho that it’s happening whether we like it or not…so we might as well start bracing for it as much as possible and make the most out of it

    12:27 - the diabolical claim; every advancement makes things easier
    13:03 - advancement translates to more work for the working class
    13:13 - a big problem in tech; advancement's inability to reduce labour time, driving company exploration
    13:58 - the irony; more resistance=more swept up in the momentum to the machine of acceleration
    14:48 - not forget acceleration not just of pace but also of depth
    15:19 - affecting every aspect of reality
    15:22 - the real question: "at what point does acceleration stop being an external force, and becomes the core of what it means to live in the 21st century?"

    You might be right that the acceleration has started and can't be stopped. Maybe resistance is already doomed. But I can't get on board with "leaning into it" or just putting all my hope into a post collapse world. We will have to learn how to survive as the system collapses, but accelerating it may lead to a situation none of us survive, nor the communities we fight for or the ideals we hold. Capitalism might fail but power shows no such signs of vulnerability. The people who oppress us already have post capitalist systems of domination ready to go. Fascism, neo-feudalism, all of the possible end goals of right-accelerationism are already prefigured. The left on the other hand is not ready. There isn't really a widespread class consciousness, there aren't really any prominent horizontal power structures. I think that if such a collapse happened today a right wing response would hit the ground running and wipe the left response off the map.
    I know your position is more nuanced than that, I'm just hesitant to roll those dice when the lives of people I care about are on the line

    • @NightmareMasterclass
      @NightmareMasterclass  23 дні тому +5

      These are all valid concerns. The one thing I take exception to in your comment is, "Capitalism might fail but power shows no such signs of vulnerability." The power of the ruling class is located precisely in their ability to command the working class via wage exploitation. This makes them extremely vulnerable in times of crisis. If the dollar no longer has value, their power is effectively rendered null.
      Neither fascism nor neofeudalism are even remotely sustainable, even in the short term. Any such attempt will quickly burn out. Systems of extreme hierarchy and exploitation, whether under capitalism or a neofeudal successor, are inherently unsustainable. They’re unable to reproduce themselves indefinitely without exhausting resources, fomenting resistance, or, critically, destabilizing the very economic systems they rely upon. Ask yourself, is a security guard driven by loyalty to the person they're protecting, or are they driven by the fact that they're paid money?
      We really need to figure out how to mitigate the harm that's going to occur as the contradictions of the system bring about a crisis; but let's be clear, the ruling class is not invincible. They want you to think they are, but their power will dissolve quickly when these dynamics play out.

    i think 'accelerationsim' is a fancy word for what is just the passage of time and the inevitable life/death cycle of every single thing. it seems to be often presented as an 'option' like it's a thing that you can 'do' but really its just another academic theory for even more passivity.

    I want to say that my political takes are pretty pedestrian because I’ve only recently taken more of an interest. But I am open, and I have taken a look around.
    If we’re mostly talking about tech here, I largely feel that the problem is still a human one. I think a way forward could be to find a way to incentivize people to interact with new technologies responsibly, with consideration for the goodwill of others. I’m not sure how that could be achieved, though.
    Looking forward to your video on 3D workers island!

    The feeling I get is that we have a lot of control over a few inputs and can really drive that stuff, but this produces many different types of feedback. Each of these on its own doesn't mean much, but it's happening on such a massively higher order that once it gets going, you can only make the problems worse.

    I think you underestimate the inherent politics of AI. I agree with Langdon Winner (“Do artifacts have politics?”) that the idea that technologies are neutral tools that shape power relations (politics) according to use is unfounded. For example, he uses the case of large scale, centralized nuclear power plants to argue that in that case it inherently requires a set of exploitative large-scale organizations to be viable. I think AI has similar intrinsic properties insofar that it requires immense data sets about human speech, actions, and vulnerabilities. It is a great match for surveillance capitalism as Shoshana Zuboff has written. I am pessimistic that it can be tamed to serve postcapitalist systems.

    • @NightmareMasterclass
      @NightmareMasterclass  23 дні тому +1

      Certainly not with that attitude! I am not a technological determinist, but of course this notion that artifacts have politics is precisely my point, which is why I emphasize the need for the development of more sophisticated open source models that can be hosted locally.

    I kinda get a little spooked how well this is describing the worldbuilding of the ALIENS franchise.
    In the ALIENS universe the world is straight up ran by a corporate pathocracy. These robber barons see their pathology not as a hinderance but as sort of 'super power'. They looked out at the world at large and those that lacked these cluster B personality traits as weak. The rest of humanity was seen as being incapable of doing the things needed to be done. So with the the rest of humanity being found wanting... They built new humans.
    These AI lifeforms were engineered on purpose to be psychopathic. This was not the behavior of 'cold machines'. This was a deliberate engineering by said robber barons to create 'perfect beings' in their own image: criminal insanity. Which again was not seen as 'criminal' or 'insane' but a beneficiary evolutionary step.

    My concern around accelerationism is not only will it exacerbate the dire conditions faced by the marginalized, but in the context of the historical conditions facing the US it won’t yield a favorable outcome for working class people. As capitalism slips further into crisis as it continues to accelerate it’s contradictions, the concentration of wealth into the bourgeois dictatorship and the implementation of propaganda through media monopoly will prime the working class to behave counter to it’s own interests and barrel headlong into fascism. Even supposing acceleration is inevitable, any individual of anticapitalist tendency should still prioritize organization and elevation of class consciousness. I don’t know if it is productive to advocate for materially worse conditions unto collapse given that collapse will be seized upon by fascists.
    Also probably worth mentioning that democrats while ostensibly the party of reform and lesser evil, are themselves instruments in acceleration through their class allegiances shared by republicans.

    • @NightmareMasterclass
      @NightmareMasterclass  21 день тому +1

      I think the left accelerationist strategy, which is focusing in the advancement of technologies that reduce socially necessary labor time, is theoretically sound. It does disrupt the labor market in the short term. But in the long term, it creates the conditions for socialism.

    • @DeuceRumbo
      @DeuceRumbo 21 день тому

      @ I can see how it potentially could but previous industrial revolutions also were supposed to have translated into easing the burden on the working class. Instead the profits from these advancements were pocketed by the bourgeoisie. We see productivity sky rocketing but wages remaining stagnant. Not arguing against the practical use of AI but more so considering the likely outcome of AI technology as it progresses under capitalism.

    • @NightmareMasterclass
      @NightmareMasterclass  20 днів тому +1

      @DeuceRumbo I personally wouldn't want to have lived before the industrial revolution. Now that I think about it, I simply wouldn't have been able to survive without medical and technological advancements of the modern world. I know there is uneven economic development and these improvements in living conditions are not uniform, but I don't think going back is an option. Your concerns are definitely valid though.

    • @DeuceRumbo
      @DeuceRumbo 20 днів тому

      @@NightmareMasterclass of course, I definitely don’t advocate for some kind of anarcho-primitivism return to monkë type view, and I certainly acknowledge that the benefits of post industrial life far outweigh the negatives. I guess I’m just trying to say that the outcomes of accelerated contradictions wont necessarily bear revolutionary potential without the organizational groundwork that even non-accelerationists would recognize as practical and necessary. From that perspective I just have to wonder if advocating for left accelerationism would be more divisive than productive? (Not necessarily saying you are yourself fully advocating for left accelerationism here)

    I really enjoyed listening to this, thanks so much. Most of the ideas were new to me, and all were really valuable. What stood out for me was the part where you described distancing oneself from technology as potentially useful for self-improvement, but otherwise really just a fantasy of change. I'm extremely biased as a person who has distanced myself from social media!! And who hates to feel helpless!! But I have been reading Jaron Lanier, and he does make some compelling points about how avoiding social media can have positive impacts on communities. (Talking about Jaron Lanier's work always feels silly because he speaks about the perils of only consuming content fragments out of context, and here I am, repeating fragments out of context, ha ha. But hopefully I'll do an OK job paraphrasing him.) But yeah, in "Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now" he says it only takes a very small number of people separated from algorithmic content to generate more out-of-the-box thinking, which can have ripple effects on society. I'm also thinking about his argument about how social media negatively impacts how we relate to other people, and extrapolating to think that more kindness and collaboration would help us work together better in pursuit of larger systemic change. I don't think this is in opposition to what you were saying in any way... If this doesn't ring true, it's probably because it does come from a place of personal insecurity... but at the same time I thought personal insecurities could still be a useful piece of feedback so...uh... that's my piece! Thank you again so much for sharing!!
