At 8:00 you say Ford could fix, in a tune, to go directly from 10th to 6th. It's not that simple. The 10R140 transmission has four planetary gear sets, controlled by two brakes, and four clutches, plus an intermediate shaft that is not directly connected to any of the planetaries. Each valid shift on the 10R140 is internally a swap-shift, where one clutch (or brake) disengages, while simultaneously another clutch (or brake) engages. This arrangement allows a shift from any gear to the adjacent gear, up or down. It can also skip shift from any odd gear up or down to the next odd gear, or skip shift from any even gear up or down to the next even gear. In the 10R140, there are 26 pairs of ratios where a swap shift is mechanically possible by toggling two elements. There are 19 pairs of ratios where a swap shift is mechanically impossible because three or more shift elements would need to toggle. It just happens to be that a swap shift from 10th to 6th is mechanically impossible in the 10R140 because it would require a simultaneous toggle of both brakes, and two of the four clutches. It requires at least two shifts to get from 10th to 6th, the fastest path being either 10th-8th-6th or 10th-7th-6th. Also on the 10R140, 6th gear is the tallest underdrive ratio, and the most complicated internally, as it is the only ratio that works all four planetary sets. 7th gear is the simplest, being 1:1, where everything turns the same speed. Here are the mechanically possible swap-shift gear combinations (up or down) on the 10R140 (but not all are available due to extreme spacing): 1-2, 1-3, 1-6, 1-8 2-3, 2-4, 2-10 3-4, 3-5, 3-6, 3-7 4-5, 4-6, 4-7, 4-10 5-6, 5-7, 5-9 6-7, 6-8 7-8, 7-9, 7-10 8-9, 8-10 9-10 The mechanically impossible swap-shift gear combinations (up or down) on the 10R140: 1-4, 1-5, 1-7, 1-9, 1-10 2-5, 2-6, 2-7, 2-8, 2-9 3-8, 3-9, 3-10 4-8, 4-9 5-8, 5-10 6-9, 6-10 The 10R140 in the Ford allows you to easily select what you want your top gear to be, the default being 10th. While in "Drive", the thumb switch on the shift lever, pressing it down will reduce the highest available gear by one. Pressing it up will increase the highest available gear by one. Hitting the switch will also cause the color display to show the available gears, and the current gear will be colored. To get the most out of the engine brake, simply thumb down to reduce the top gear. This will raise the engine RPM. If you lose speed from too much engine brake, just thumb up to the next gear. You can do all this without ever needing to place the shift lever in the "Manual" position. This same thumb-shift technique also works on the 2011-2019 6R140 transmission.
What a heart breaker. Cancelled my order for a ford after this test drive... 😂 Good video. Thought you sabotaged me at the end when you cut the clip😂😂🤦🏼♂️
Go drive a F450 with the same trailer. You'll get a different experience with bigger brakes, lower rear end gear, and that wide axle with makes turns on dime.
I love how this is a honest review. V belt didn't just go on your side just because it was your channel. He literally gave options and opinions towards ram and power stroke throughout the video. "Well my 2008 would hit it at x amount of speed and its 12 years old". I love it. Honesty.

I wonder if you can manually drop it down to 6th? I know the RAMs have the +/- on the column shifter; does the Ford? Also, I'd love to be able to compare the Pacbrake PXRB (or whatever order those letters are supposed to be in) on my 05 RAM with 6sp manual, because I never felt like it was very good.
@@zxej6879 And if you are as experienced as you claim, you should know how to drive a vehicle without an exhaust brake. The exhaust brake was first used on engines in 1989. What did drives do for all of the tears of driving prior to that? And exhaust brake can also cause over heating of the engine/exhaust components.

Just out of curiosity have you ever wanted to try a fifth wheel. We switched are gooseneck over from a gooseneck coupler to a fifth wheel and it is alot more stable going down the hwy.
some people seem to think number of gears are so important, well, perhaps how well that gearbox is made for what the vehicle is build to do is more important, here in Europe I drive a Mercedes coach with a 10.6 liter engine coupled with 6 speed gear box that does much much better than a similar coach with a Volvo 12 speed gearbox or even a 8 speed Scania box...cruising on the motorway at 62 mph with 50 passengers + gear and so forth with ease, clocking 1200rpm on the tacho...discussions apart about which truck is better, and having a slight inclination towards Fords, I have to say, them Cummins engines are absolutely brilliant, a true work horse that also happens to drag big ships all over the oceans...great tradition with diesels
I watched his video before I watched yours, and I never noticed the "PhilBrrr!" Cups! I have a few of those... I love his reaction to that truck. The gears make the truck. That 10-speed is amazing. I've thought of retrofitting one into our 7.3L IDI Crew Cab.

I see his complaint, about exhaust brake and trailer brakes getting hot. He needs to drive a F450 which has a low rear end gear and much bigger brakes. I agree my 450 does need a more powerful exhaust brake. But his opinion would be different in a 450!
I read the other day that ZF has an 8-speed coming that's designed for heavy duty truck use (up to 57,000 lbs). We will likely see that in the RAM in another couple of years.
I have experienced both trucks at the landscape firm I work for. If Ram actually puts a heavy service 8,9,10 speed behind the Cummins it's game over. The Fords are absolute beasts at the towing level - nothing is going to out pull them. However, the Ford turning radius issue (or lack of) persists and the engine brake issue was a real pain. Very hilly in north Jersey where I work and the Ram was just a better overall performer from a "differing terrain" standpoint. On highway the Ford is real hard to beat except for the exhaust brake performance. If Ford is going to address that, some redesign of valve train is gonna be needed I think. Both of those trucks are way above anything I thought I'd ever see though.
Dig the videos. Always been more of a sports car/ sedan guy, but I just got a ‘96 7.3L turbo diesel power stroke F-250 XLT (also my first diesel) and I’m absolutely in love. Never been much for domestics either, but I’m in love with my OBS Ford.
I think a lot of people are forgetting there’s a difference between the two in cost for repairs. If I have the luxury of leasing a Ford and not have to worry about repairing it after the warranty is up would give me a peaceful mind, but I would never ever own one beyond that because the first time you repair it will Will be costly in parttly because only Ford can work on it and 2 the body Has to be lifted off every single time that’s the “dealbreaker“ ,the Cummins is so much simpler and 1/3 the moving parts not worth the two speed transmission gain, The slight gaining power will be long forgotten up on the first credit card transaction for repairs yeah-No. Great video of two of my favorite tow boys otherwise!
@srthellcat707 Yes if you're commercial. Not personal but there's some states where ANYONE over 26k needs a cdl. Even if you're not hauling, if your truck and trailer GVWR are combined over 26k you need a cdl. I believe there's farm exemptions though.
Alex, you are correct the exhaust brake is junk. I have a aftermarket brake in my F450 and it is night and day better than the brake in my wife’s F250 which is factory. After towing for so long with mine I actually took her truck back to the dealership after she bought it because I didn’t think the brake on her truck was activating. Even the Ford tech said yes it’s working it just sucks. Both trucks are full deletes with EZ LINK tunes but I replaced my brake with a BD aftermarket brake and will do the same to the 250 soon
And when you got the first Ford and raised the hood, you said I like it but would not buy one! You can stay with the Ford since you lease and will never run the miles up. V-belt may not be a fanboy, he just knows what works!
It's coming, but either with ZF or Allison. I'd rather see the 9 speed Allison behind the cummins. But I can see when that happens RAM will up the ante like Ford did and push the HO Cummins up to 1100ft/lbs of torque.
You will never see a good transmission in a Dodge lol. The Aisin is a good transmission it does shift rough and it does hunt for gears. We have a 08 5500 Dodge at work.
@@mavrick0pm Id LOVE a real 9spd Allison. Im actually going to do an Allison conversion when my 48RE bites the dust. Aisin's are good transmissions..Ive only dealt with ZF's in sports cars. But if They would mate a Cummins to an actual Allison that would be the Bees Knees.
Well don’t this fca. Will be doing much cause they just merged with Peugeot. So they going to rebrand the company. Who knows what the future hold for ram, dodge,Jeep, Chrysler.
I love fords transmission setup. It will up or downshift whenever you hit the + or - no matter what your throttle position is, everyone else it's a joke. Whenever you select a gear it's still going to shift when it wants, it just stops at that gear. You select 4th it's still going to go thru 1st 2and 3rd and 4th then stay in 4th. I dont like the Ford because it's a nightmare to do any work on it, but one thing I do love is the transmission manual shift. Only thing I dont like is the rpms are always up anytime you accelerate even a little quick because the torque converter doesnt lock until half way thru 3rd gear My titan xd locks as soon as you hit 2nd and stays locked, so whole it shifts firm, I like how it stays locked.
So, when they improve the breaking for 2021, they will be undisputed champions for sure. 475 Horsepower is a lot, and to add the TQ. I would say Ford is The best at 27,500, but depending on road conditions, I'd take the Ford for over 30-35,000 pounds. But, how could you go wrong?! These are not trucks anymore, they are mountains on wheels. I'm Ford 9/10 and RAM 8.8/10. He vs get it for the 20,000 mark, but 10,000 less than the Twin Titans is a lot of money I imagine.
Any horror stories with the Ram air suspension? That seems like a great idea if you use your truck as a every day driver. The 6.7 is impressive to tow with. I completely agree about looking under the hood. Actually as tight as it is the cab should just flip front.
It’s air suspension? How complicated could it be? If it was on a Ford you know it would be expensive at a premium it’s not it’s on the ram and they work great they’re cheap to work on.
I had a 08 cummins, I’d have to say I’ve pulled some good loads, one time over the Eisenhower pass, I’d never go back to a cummins after taking a sip from the 6.7 psd punch bowl... I have a 16 now, and have to say that with some “enhancements” it will run circles around my old 08( the 08 had the goodies too). Pulling with my 16 I still get better mpgs at 28.5k than with the cummins at 22k~
On your new trailer I would get the 8k axles and have them de-rate it. Better performance of weight(last longer) and braking(braking will help the FORD engine brake) will offset parts availability.
One issue with jumping down so many gears is youd redline the truck dropping 4 gears like that. I have a class a cdl driving an peterbilt big rig. Every truck i drive has a manual transmission, when i drop down gears quick and only two gears im at 2k rpms and the max is 2100. That being said you would grenade the transmission dropping four gears like that. To give you a better perspective when i slow down from 10th down to 6th theres a difference of 25 mph in speed. That would equivalent to driving a 100 mph and trying to slide to a stop
I was down there last week in California, it was hot! Its a lot cooler up here in Montana. Those trucks can haul a lot of weight, its also impressive that you can scale 12,000 with a 26,000 hotshot, your trailer must be super lite.I also watch V belt, not just because he is a Californian either, he lives up around some of my family in Northern California. Good Video!
It was fun to watch you on Sam's channel. But your version of the event. Is a very good presentation. Zeppelin, known as ZF. Is working with Ram about using the Powerline 8AT. Saw a video on the test track. The VGT turbo of the Cummins is a big deal. Consider that Sam has a truck with the VGT turbo and a PacBrake. Alex, keep making your outstanding videos.
And a 7k hub will go right on a 8k axle tube you just have to adapt 4 bolt 8k brake backing plate too 7k flanges I had some welded on my 8k axle tubes now I run 7k hubs bearing seala and brake on my 8k axles no more bent axle hopefully Also bigtex dosnt have enough suspension travel the axle bottoms out on the frame and bends 8k will definitely help prevent that though
Yeah that’s why I stay with Ram yeah shifting sucks on them and trans won’t less long but you safe going down the hill , towing heavy stuff you need that good engine brake .
Having come from a Duramax...Cummins is by FAR easier to work on. In the rare event you do have to work on it..lol I Couldnt imagine touching a powerstroke..half the day would be removing shit.lol
Hey man just wanted to give you a shout out. Love the videos keep them coming. You are a inspiration to me. Because of you and your videos I have decided to start hot shot running. And I’m thinking on doing a channel. I have a long story to tell. I hope you might take the time to look at my stuff if I get a channel going
I’m buying a truck. But I was on the fence. Between a Ford are a Ram. I have a Ram pickup. But I know they do have issues with there transmissions. How’s the Ford hold up?
@@alanack67 faster doesn't always win the race. Also if you want fast, all you need to do is tun that cummins, and it will be faster then that ford, and it will last a lot longer too.

The 10R140 transmission has four planetary gear sets, controlled by two brakes, and four clutches, plus an intermediate shaft that is not directly connected to any of the planetaries. Alex the amount of information you know about that ford from simply driving it day in and day out is amazing.
How about using a temperature gun to check your hubs so we can see what you mean by “hot”
By how long he was touching it it was less than 160 degrees. As you can only touch somthing at 160 for around 3 to 4 seconds

Only thing I dont like is the rpms are always up anytime you accelerate even a little quick because the torque converter doesnt lock until half way thru 3rd gear
My titan xd locks as soon as you hit 2nd and stays locked, so whole it shifts firm, I like how it stays locked.
Ford trucks always been #1 in my book alex
Omg I almost did because I couldn't believe go another day without your videos
So, when they improve the breaking for 2021, they will be undisputed champions for sure. 475 Horsepower is a lot, and to add the TQ. I would say Ford is The best at 27,500, but depending on road conditions, I'd take the Ford for over 30-35,000 pounds. But, how could you go wrong?! These are not trucks anymore, they are mountains on wheels. I'm Ford 9/10 and RAM 8.8/10. He vs get it for the 20,000 mark, but 10,000 less than the Twin Titans is a lot of money I imagine.
You should look on your trans see if it is the gm 10 speed. 10L or 10R being ford plant. Basically it’s an Alison branded trans
Shocked till it leaves him on side the road
I have a 2016 ram
A 2017 f350
2018 silverado
2020 gmc denali
All duallies..
The f350 feels better than all while towing..
Not anymore likely than a ram or Chevy / gmc. Most issues on the newer trucks are emissions related.
Correction I don't think he's ever owned a first gen he has 2nd gens. Itd be nice to see him add a 1st gen to the fleet however.
Keep on the good work love your vids
I had a 08 cummins, I’d have to say I’ve pulled some good loads, one time over the Eisenhower pass, I’d never go back to a cummins after taking a sip from the 6.7 psd punch bowl... I have a 16 now, and have to say that with some “enhancements” it will run circles around my old 08( the 08 had the goodies too).
Pulling with my 16 I still get better mpgs at 28.5k than with the cummins at 22k~
I had a customer towing 35,000lbs in a 2005 Cummins.. No biggy
I tow about 20k regularly with a 2000 ram 3500. She has 320k miles and she still rips!
If you weren't leasing the truck, you could upgrade the exhaust brake, problem solved. How long will that transmission go?
I drive a 2020 5500 6.7 turbo Diesel and i I agree That Ram should get a 10-speed and for Ford to get a better exhaust brake.
On your new trailer I would get the 8k axles and have them de-rate it. Better performance of weight(last longer) and braking(braking will help the FORD engine brake) will offset parts availability.
Great video alex 😬🙌🏻👍🏻
Not 100% legal you don't have IRP Or IFTA, so if ya'll would've had a run in with state Troopers. You would be waiting on help or out of money.
Good Video!
I don't know how he does this. If your trailer is more than 10k and you're hauling for hire, you're supposed to have a CDL. Ask me how I know.
The Cummins has a strong engine brake, would love to see Ram grab annAllison auto.Great video guys.
Ram Asin transmission is a Allison on steroids same platform clutch pack trans just more beef
All bow down to the 10 speed
There isn't a way to manually downshift when needed?
Awesome video! You should cross over to a Diamond C trailer alex!! 😂 sam is great enjoy his videos to!
And a 7k hub will go right on a 8k axle tube you just have to adapt 4 bolt 8k brake backing plate too 7k flanges I had some welded on my 8k axle tubes now I run 7k hubs bearing seala and brake on my 8k axles no more bent axle hopefully
Also bigtex dosnt have enough suspension travel the axle bottoms out on the frame and bends 8k will definitely help prevent that though
Any interest in a Featherlite trailer? Should free up some weight.
Yeah that’s why I stay with Ram yeah shifting sucks on them and trans won’t less long but you safe going down the hill , towing heavy stuff you need that good engine brake .
Ford all the way. I have the F-450 2019
Need a Digital Infrared Thermometer to actually compare hub temps
I'd love to have an F450, but my Ram does every thing I need it to do, and does it without breaking a sweat.
Are there any after market exhaust brakes available? Also, I'm curious how would the F450 would perform?
450 would be a ton better than that 350. Depending on which gear that 350 has it's ethier 3.55s or 4.10. 450s have 4.30s.
Yes I have a ez link tune full delete with a BD diesels aftermarket brake on my f450 . It’s a beast
Ford owners look at the engine. Good luck when you guys work on it.
Having come from a Duramax...Cummins is by FAR easier to work on. In the rare event you do have to work on it..lol I Couldnt imagine touching a powerstroke..half the day would be removing shit.lol
Time will tell how good that 10 speed hold up.
It's a ford...you'll never have too!
Why would we need to work on it?
There easy to work one
Thanks guys! This is how manufacturers get pushed to improve their products!
Was patiently waiting for this video
The Ford will never outdo the true diesel of the Cummins
Well in exhaust brake Cummins but in pulling power in term acceleration at same trailer weight ford will spanks Cummins 5.9 and 6.7 easy
Can't you manually put the transmission in the gear that will slow it down.
i been waiting for this video.👌
As far as the exhaust brake, the Dmax is the same! You need to work the brake pedal to get it to do what you want. Awesome video
Seems the transmission in the ford goes at about 270,000?
At least that's what happened to truck and travel.
Ram for around town, Ford for the open road.
Thanks for the video
I’m buying a truck. But I was on the fence. Between a Ford are a Ram. I have a Ram pickup. But I know they do have issues with there transmissions. How’s the Ford hold up?
Sam is awesome
Yes buddy 👍🏻
He would be shocked at the cost of repairs also.
what number setting was your trailer brake set at?
Your gonna have a hard time converting me over to ford. I'm more of a basic guy and dodges are pretty basic
Thats why i like them. They are really simple, even the new ones. Fords are a way faster truck though. But that doesnt bother me.
@@alanack67 faster doesn't always win the race. Also if you want fast, all you need to do is tun that cummins, and it will be faster then that ford, and it will last a lot longer too.
Nice video Alex...Sam's a getter doner..! Peace !
You can always add a aftermarket exhaust brake
Matt Lopez that's what's so tough about v8 diesels... they suck to work on and Sam does his own work and understands what he does and doesn't want to deal with.
cummins That says it all
with the loads sam pulls he needs the better brake and he is a ram guy so i think it would be a hard sale
The last part was good 🤣😂
Although I agree the Ram needs to put a 10 speed in their trucks I wouldn't own a ford to save my life
How did yall tighten that binder with a drill?
Cabs are the same on all trucks from big 3 now. Always has been except ford. 97-17 f150 was a dif cab than superduty. Ford 04-14 f150 all had same shell for the most part, same with 97-16 superduty. Bout time they went back to same body
You can buy better exhaust brakes for the powerstroke
I sold my f450 and got a 2020 f350 with the new 7.3 with 4.30s and it breaks better down hill
The cabs are the same for f150 and all superduty trucks. One more way for ford to save money.
Totally legal, towing his own equipment and not commerically for profit.
my favorite truck stop Loves in Corning
I've come over from V-Belt & Son !
You can always down shift with the minus while in drive
It says XLT on the...thing. Very informative 😂😂 but I am a Ford guy so nice video
FORD only for me!
Don't forget about the 2021 Ford redesign
Need to try the Duramax
RAM be smart and make a 10sp Transmission
Fingers crossed make a CAT engine for the 5500 🙏🏼😁
or better yet .. that Cat in the Ford with that 10 speed
The cab is the same from the F150-F750.
