- Miroslav Könnemann (also written as: Koennemann) (Prague, 1826 - Baden-Baden, 28 November 1890) was a Bohemian composer and conductor. He is best known in the Netherlands for his four-part symphonic poem De Fremersberg (Der Fremersberg).

Könnemann studied at the then Prager State Conservatory (now Státní konservatori hudby v Praze) in Prague. After obtaining his diplomas, he became a conductor at the court chapel of Prince August zu Hohenlohe-Öhringen. After years of assignments as conductor with various royal and city orchestras, he became Kapellmeister of the Austrian Infantry Regiment No. 28, then stationed in Rastatt. During his stay in Rastatt, musical life developed in both Rastatt and Baden-Baden. From 1858 he was also conductor of the spa orchestra in Baden-Baden, which was then still called Bénazetsches Orchester and reached a high level with this orchestra. He continued to hold this position until his death.
The orchestra received a positive stimulation because Baden-Baden developed into a distinguished spa resort during this period; well-known composers and soloists were guests in this city, such as Anton Rubinstein, Henri Vieuxtemps, Henryk Wieniawski and Hans Joachim. Other guest conductors with this orchestra were: Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Georges Bizet, Hans von Bülow and Felix Mottl.
He was a member of the Masonic lodge "Badenia zum Fortschritt" in Baden-Baden.
I am always happy to discover a new Czech composer. Why is Koenemann known especially in the Netherlands, is this piece connected to an event in Dutch history?
The Fremersberg was the B-side of the Battle of Waterloo by Benedict Silberman, who also conducted both works and who, it seems, made some cuts in Koennemann's score. This was a Philips LP. I am going to upload the Battle of Waterloo one of these days, as I have Silberman's manuscript score.
