Spinel has one of the saddest backstories of any cartoon villain. Dark fact: Rebecca explained why Spinel's gem flipped, was because she felt so many emotions in the moment she realized the truth, almost being on the verge of a "s***ide" of her light form.
Here are some pieces of trivia: 1. Rebecca Sugar stated that what she wanted people to take away from the movie and Spinel's character arc was that it's alright to be a 'work in progress' and it's you who needs to want to change and get better. 2. Rebecca Sugar based Spinel on a favorite stuffed rabbit that she once carelessly abandoned in her backyard as a child. Upon rediscovering it six months later, she found the toy had permanently changed after exposure to the elements. This same incident also inspired the 'Everything Stays' segment in Adventure Time. 3. Garnet was originally meant to sing the entirety of True Kinda Love, but when her voice actress Estelle first read the lyrics, she suggested Steven should sing the verse starting with "Hey, you, show me that solvable problem," as it fit in with his goal throughout the movie. 4. The film received a theatrical release internationally and was scheduled for a one-night sing-along via Fathom Events on March 23, 2020, alongside Homeworld Bound (2020) (which was to premiere that week), but the event was canceled as movie theaters started closing the previous week due to the 2019-20 Coronavirus pandemic.
With the movie being MY first exposure to the Steven Universe...well...UNIVERSE, I can say with 100% confidence that I had me hooked right from the get-go. There was a lot of fun had when making this movie, I could tell. And immediately went back to watch the original show, and later down the line, Future. I was THAT invested.
Same thing for me, I saw some memes of spinel and then her songs whichs caught my attention with how good they were, so I watched the movie and I loved it
I need to watch Steven Universe more. From the episodes that I have watched, I feel like I should punch in the balls for sleeping on it. I MUST watch more Steven Universe.

Spinell’s inspiration is also very interesting, it comes from one of Rebecca’s childhood toys that she one day lost in her garden and finding again several weeks later. The side that was facing the sun lost almost all of its color, it changed despite not moving an inch. It also inspired the Adventure Time song « Everything stays » that she wrote: Let's go in the garden, you'll find something waiting Right there where you left it, lying upside down When you finally find it, you'll see how it's faded The underside is lighter when you turn it around Everything stays right where you left it Everything stays, but it still changes Ever so slightly, daily and nightly In little ways, when everything stays
This was a really well thought out review, Mat. The film on its own is fantastic with great animation, amazing songs, lovable characters, and stellar voice work. I think newcomers will definitely enjoy this, though I can't recommend the show enough. It such a wonderfully crafted series that tackles themes of identity, sexuality, trauma, and relationships.
Despite that I have never seen the series and is more aware of it, I quite enjoyed the film and I do appreciate its morals. I even owned the artbook of the film itself.
I hope he can also do "Regular Show: The Movie" as well, one of my personal favorite made-for-TV Cartoon Network movie. Talking of which, who wants to hear AniMat's thoughts on "Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show"?
I won’t be pretentiously snarky and criticize the crap outta something I’m unfamiliar with. I’m animat, not Lilly Orchard. No truer words have been said.
As a fan of Steven Universe, this is definitely a great movie and big love letter to the series. I could go on with how this movie is great but think other fans of the show made their point. Anyways, next up is Ghost in the Shell 2. Now I remember when you put this movie on your top 10 best animated sequels. But that was all the way back in 2011. So let’s see if it is better or worse than remember.
I was a Steven Universe fan ever since the beginning when the first episode came out and it still stands as one of my favourite CN shows. You know, maybe it's best for Animat to not be familiar with the show before the review, because not everyone is familiar with the show, so having the movie review be from the perspective of a newcomer will make the review more assuring to anyone watching it. Anyway, my guess for the next review is Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. Because he said that the next review is a smart sequel and I remember him mentioning in his top 10 animated sequels review that the film had a lot of messages and philosophies. What's also interesting is that since he is older and smarter now than he was back then, I wonder if after he sees the movie again, he would place it higher on his top 10 animated sequels list if he chooses to revise it.
I have seen the older episodes of Steve universe in the past and it was a pretty fun show. As for the movie, I can agree it turned really good, but I do wish it can find a way to add a better context to make it welcoming for newcomers. I also do admire Spinel’s dark backstory and her character animation. My younger brothers enjoyed that movie
On the one hand, I can’t fathom a newcomer watching the movie first since it’s basically takes place *after* the series and expects you to already be familiar with all these characters. On the other hand, the movie does basically give a recap of the series and retreads each character’s arcs due to them being “reset” by Spinel, so it’s not as if it’s not newcomer-friendly. I’d overall give the movie an 8/10 as well, since it’s not the best the series has to offer, but still a great, wonderfully animated musical with flat-out the best antagonist to come from the series. And all the songs are definitely huge bops, especially Here We Are in the Future, Other Friends and Drift Away.
I hope you talk about the short Once Upon A Studio or at least hopefully it’s gets mentioned in the news of Crazy Cartoon Cast because that one deserves to be talked about how great it is.
14:30 I always saw Spinel as if you take Pinkie Pie from Mlp and make her a villain but that works too. Also, You know who Spinel also reminds me of a lot? World from FHFIF movie Destination Imagination. Think about: all they want is to be friends, but both can be very toxic in different way, and they both tried to attack the main characters. However, World suffers trauma from being alone in his own world because he was selfish on not letting his kid go, but learns to get out and make some new friends. while Spinel was more like a clingy younger sibling to Pink, whose purpose was to just entertain and doesn’t take things seriously, but learns not to let one tragic destroy who she really is. But as someone who’s seen the show, With an engaging character driven story, beautiful animation, songs that great to listen and going into more depth into the characters we know and love, Steven universe the movie is greatest CN movie since Ed Edd n Eddy’s big picture show. Plus, it honestly works well as a stand-alone movie. I definitely give it a 9.5/10.
as a Steven Universe fan: I personally think The Movie _shouldn't_ be someone's starting point. it spoils some pretty big things that I'd rather have people learn by watching the show proper
You hit the nail on the head about higher priorities, for those not drawn straight to Steven Universe, things we'd prefer to watch that don't have such a heavy emotional emphasis that would put some people off or the amount of sad episodes I hear it has (I watched a few episodes but wasn't hurrying back to it ever, I was with shows like The Loud House, and still do with that one)
You know I have to say, I'm generally surprised at how this really turned out. I'll say my relationship with Steven Universe is fully passed, I used to binge watch the heck out of the entire series like no tomorrow, including the movie as a major conclusion. My interest completely stopped when the "future" came and... let's just say everything went a little too deep to think if Steven would be the only one who needed therapy.😵💫,
Great Review Animat and Happy 10th Anniversary to Steven Universe One of Cartoon Network’s Greatest Shows of All Time and as for my thoughts on The Movie I think it’s Really Great and One of The Best Films based on a Cartoon Network Series

I'll say I used to enjoy this movie highly as fans would, and I'm actually impressed that this does have more of the capability to introduce newcomers that even a little more could be explained to prove it's actually possible they can enjoy this. I was a bit concerned it was going to be 'heavy' even for new people to handle or not enough context to understand it all. I guess Steven is strong enough to make an impression as much as he made an impact!

Ah, so it was the Steven Universe movie that was coming up. Now it's making sense. Me personally, I didn't watch Steven Universe either when it was on TV, though it was mostly because I was into other cartoons at the time, and I was aware of the cartoon's impact, plus I knew that some of my favorite actors, like Susan Egan, were a part of the show too. Maybe one of these days I'll binge watch the series. A "philosophical" sequel? I have no idea what could be next.
I haven’t finished the video yet- but 7 minutes in- your attachment to Spinel’s character- the ONLY new one in the movie- makes complete sense- because that’s the character that requires the most justification in terms of presence to the fans. Watching this without context is a crazy idea. I wouldn’t suggest it tho- with context it’s 100 times better.
Omg animat I'm a huge steven universe fan it's one of my favorite cartoons from the 2010 decade and my favorite cartoon network show from the 2010 decade too I've met some of the voice cast at conventions and had them sign funko pops and I am hoping you will review the series at some point too
Aww man I'm disappointed the next review isn't gonna be a Disney movie. It would have been perfect for Disney's 100th anniversary to review a Disney classic like Beauty and the Beast (yes, AniMat hasn't reviewed that movie yet). I know AniMat's explanation for the next movie is a little vague but "too smart for me" "philosophical" and "sequel" don't match Disney.
It's been a while since I last saw it, but as a longtime fan of the show I remember liking the movie. Everything involving Spinel was easily the main highlight of the film, between her amusing personality, tragic backstory and awesome Rubberhose-inspired animation.
"Maybe a little too smart for me" I can relate! I remember lots of movies like Rise of the guardians and Megamind that I never understood when I was younger. And when I first watched trolls world tour, I thought it was like that as well bht when I watched it again... DISCLAIMER: NO GUESSUNG INTENDED
7:45 I knew you’d bring up the ‘CalArts style’ controversy Just to clarify, I don’t _hate_ it. In fact, for _Steven Universe_ , the style fits perfectly with the show It just kind of bothers me that the style has become a bit overused these days In short, I don’t hate the style, I’m just bored with it
I wish you could start a trend where you conclude your thoughts on the movie with that (positve outcome) or (negative outcome) thing you say before the review. Ex. The movie shines as bright as the series' legacy
Three things about my thoughts as a recent fan of Steven Universe (circa 2020): 1- I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like the series is stuck in a loop of appreciation nowadays; being loved, then hated for one reason or another, then going right back to being praised. Am I right? Probably not, but that's what I feel. 2- I get being mad at a fanbase for what members of it did in the past (i.e. sending death threats towards a fan for drawing a character wrong to the point of said fan contemplating suicide), but-- HEY! Blame these idiots, not the show or the whole fanbase. Especially because this kind of action goes against the very moral of the show itself. 3- F**K the journalist who accidentally doxxed Rebecca Sugar. Taking in mind the toxicity and aggresivity of members on the internet who either love or hate the show, even if it was an accident, this stunt of this person could've put her life in DANGER.
I don't understand why the hate against the show is so aggressive. It just feels... Odd. Like they're searching for problems. The show isn't perfect, nothing is, but the flaws are massively overblown and I still get harassed online for being a fan.
That's right we heard this story *over AND over AGAIN!!!* In my personal opinion I honestly dont mind this being the true series finale and Future was just an afterthought of wasteful fetchquests, Spinel's absent, and *DONT GET ME STARTED ON STEVEN'S PINK TAMTRUMS!!!!*
Honestly, Luz’s emotional arc in the first two parts of season 3 was handled much better and was way more realistic in terms of the writing and made sense with the narrative. While this Steven pink tantrums wasn’t as bad as I remember, they could’ve been better.
I hope he can also review “We bare Bears: The Movie” or “The PowerPuff Girls Movie”. A couple of my personal favorite Cartoon Network Movies, theatrical or made-for-TV.
0:45 Wow if I had a nickel everytime Animat said I never watch the show before I had to nickels witch isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice. Also thanks to Steven Universe it did help with Disney with Owl House with Lumity and Nickelodeon with The Loud House with Suna and Clyde's dads 25:17 Hmm a smart sequel
My favorite two characters throughout this franchise is easily the title character Steven Universe and of course the fan favorite spinel because Steven is a great main character that is brave enough to face any journey that his friends ask him to go, and Spinel is a fantastic, redemptional, emotional, and yet a lovable character thanks to the wonderful performance by Sarah stiles where she let it all out her moments of this picture hands off to Zach and Sarah for this picture they really show a lot of this movie. Spinel 11/10 🩷 Steven 10/10 🩵 🎵that’s right I’ve see this movie and it’s series over and over again gee it’s swell to finally enjoy these other friends🎵
What are you talking about? Cal-Arts is absolutely a definable style. Simple lines, soft curves, a mixture of old-school western animation (Betty Boop days), and Moe anime character designs, usually uses the "bean mouth". It's also incredibly overused and it would be nice if we could get animation that uses something else.
Calling it the CAL-Arts style is part of what makes it technically undefineable, since every Disney Renaissance and Golden Age Pixar movie was also animated and directed almost entirely by CAL-Arts graduates, but the "style" described isn't applicable to those films.
One thing that kind of bothers me about this movie is that it’s a musical, like I get that the show has songs, but it’s not a musical series, if it was an Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, I would get, but not really a Steven Universe one, it’s true that the series has some bangers like “Stronger Than You” but I feel that the only reason why they have a good number of songs is to just extend the runtime, not to actually progress the story, which okay they do, but I feel that they could’ve done them better than forcing in a song.
love SU and this movie came out on my 18th which was an interesting present on cartoon network's part. i have my issues with the series. from pacing issues, annoyingly quick resolutions, and often having the allegories the series is meant to represent being better and more depthful than the actual plot (eg. the entire diamond plot being an amazing allegory for reconnecting with an abusive and unaccepting family as a young lgbt person after time apart from them but being incompetent as a finale for the show's original run because how you deal with abusive families is a lot different from how you deal with genocidal warlords it turns out) and the animation is incredibly hit or miss, especially for like.. the first half of its run, which is the half most non-fans remember, hence why it got sort of a reputation for bad animation, despite prolly being the most solid looking mid 2010's cartoon network shows. The show overall was still great and i think the massive ammount of hate it got in the late 2010's was a pretty reactionary mix of people not understandimg the term "mixed bag" and mid 2010's culture war BS not being able to accept a show with complex themes implicitly about introducing kids to complex concepts of identity and relationships that cartoons had largely failed to explore prior. plus people getting angry at a show not being what they wanted a show to be. which.. it clearly wasn't from the beggining so idk what they where here for ngl.
I never seen the film, but I know one person I met in uni likes the character Spinel. I watched some episodes, though. Funny how James Baxter was involved in the animation, though.
14:13 Yeah you're right Animat because in the epilogue series "Steven Universe Future" Steven proposed to her it was hilarious! And even though they didn't get married they did kiss before Stephen left to travel the world.
Well to explain the animation this was a made-for-tv movie which means it was outsourced to Korea or different countries that explains the animation and there was also some guests animation by takafumi hori who did other friends and I can make a change songs I may be young but I've been studying animation for 5 years straight so that explains the production value😊
me thinks the next review will be Return to neverland because it has a philisophical message about not growing up too fast that kids wont really notice until they grow a bit older and it is a sequel but idk what do you think?
you simply need to plan how many episodes of steven you watch in one day, especially since each episode lasts about 10 minutes. If I want to catch up on this series, but avoid the fillers, I posted such a list on my blog, along with an indication of where to stop, for example, I divided season 1 into parts to make it easier to find time to watch it.
A little play on the whole two-nickles meme I've been hearing so often lately, huh. Okay, I did that meme on his Facebook with "Every time Animat was introduced to a popular animated show through having to make a review of the movie this year". I honestly was a little tired of that meme, but I considered it a missed opportunity if I didn't do it.
TFW, I still wanna give the show a watch not only cause it's a good representation for the LGBTQIA Community, but when I've mostly seen clips, it's interesting with the feels and how the universe (don't know if that's pun intended since it is called Steven Universe) works. Same goes for the movie because why not.

I guess Steven is strong enough to make an impression as much as he made an impact!
14:34 - Now that is a sentence that I would never hear it uttered.
AniMat may not have watched Steven Universe
But to give him credit, he did mention it in Animation Lookback: Cartoon Network

*THANX FOR REVIEWING THIS, MATT!* 🤩
Well done AniMat, well done!🤠👍💯
Omg animat I'm a huge steven universe fan it's one of my favorite cartoons from the 2010 decade and my favorite cartoon network show from the 2010 decade too I've met some of the voice cast at conventions and had them sign funko pops and I am hoping you will review the series at some point too
Back when you teased this in your review for The Pebble and The Penguin, I thought you were going to review The Loud House Movie.
Nope my brother and I figured it was this movie.
1:00 - That is how I feel about certain animated series that goes on for too long.
Just wait till he tears apart The Loud House Movie later down the road.
"Maybe a little too smart for me"
I can relate! I remember lots of movies like Rise of the guardians and Megamind that I never understood when I was younger.
And when I first watched trolls world tour, I thought it was like that as well bht when I watched it again...
DISCLAIMER: NO GUESSUNG INTENDED
7:45 I knew you’d bring up the ‘CalArts style’ controversy
Just to clarify, I don’t _hate_ it. In fact, for _Steven Universe_ , the style fits perfectly with the show
It just kind of bothers me that the style has become a bit overused these days
In short, I don’t hate the style, I’m just bored with it
and let's not forget that SU has the whole "board artists meshing their styles with the show's" thing to help it stand out
I remember Steve universe being one of the early show I watch when I started school back in 2013 and look where I am in the future 10th grade
I wish you could start a trend where you conclude your thoughts on the movie with that (positve outcome) or (negative outcome) thing you say before the review.
Ex. The movie shines as bright as the series' legacy
When I first saw this, I was expecting Spinel to be a part of some Space Pirates
Three things about my thoughts as a recent fan of Steven Universe (circa 2020):
1- I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like the series is stuck in a loop of appreciation nowadays; being loved, then hated for one reason or another, then going right back to being praised.
And screw Misanthropony for accusing Rebecca of being a feminist.
I LOOOOVE this movie and series
Next AniMt's Classic Reviews is: Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence
I kinda predicted he would review the first Ghost of the Shell movie later this year but that’s close enough.
14:21 Greg.... nasty ass 🤐(i love him tho he is funny)
That's right we heard this story *over AND over AGAIN!!!*
In my personal opinion I honestly dont mind this being the true series finale and Future was just an afterthought of wasteful fetchquests, Spinel's absent, and *DONT GET ME STARTED ON STEVEN'S PINK TAMTRUMS!!!!*
Honestly, Luz’s emotional arc in the first two parts of season 3 was handled much better and was way more realistic in terms of the writing and made sense with the narrative.
While this Steven pink tantrums wasn’t as bad as I remember, they could’ve been better.
Sorry but spoiler alert:
Spinel turned good and got her joy back.
Also thanks to Steven Universe it did help with Disney with Owl House with Lumity and Nickelodeon with The Loud House with Suna and Clyde's dads
25:17 Hmm a smart sequel
Bob’s Burgers
PAW Patrol
Teen Titans GO!
Gumby
Spirit: Riding Free
Yo-Kai Watch
The Magic Roundabout
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir
Steven Universe
My favorite two characters throughout this franchise is easily the title character Steven Universe and of course the fan favorite spinel because Steven is a great main character that is brave enough to face any journey that his friends ask him to go, and Spinel is a fantastic, redemptional, emotional, and yet a lovable character thanks to the wonderful performance by Sarah stiles where she let it all out her moments of this picture hands off to Zach and Sarah for this picture they really show a lot of this movie.
Spinel 11/10 🩷
Steven 10/10 🩵
🎵that’s right I’ve see this movie and it’s series over and over again gee it’s swell to finally enjoy these other friends🎵
"The lovechild between Harley Quinn, and Judge Doom" somebody needs to write a fanfic about that.
And I should write a fanfic about The Collector from The Owl House being a love child of Bill Cipher and Spinel.
@@madsceptictrooper6803 not sure if you’re being genuine or sarcastic
@@arbytv5139 My comment was supposed to be sarcastic but I can't write sarcastic text on mobile.

Spinel is my favourite character in Steven Universe.
I’m sensing the next review is gonna be “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence”
Oh
So the next classic review shall be……..Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas
Oh.
It was only a matter of time that you would review this
Fun fact: My sister watched this movie for the first time in October 2019, and she became a huge fan of Steven Universe
Well to explain the animation this was a made-for-tv movie which means it was outsourced to Korea or different countries that explains the animation and there was also some guests animation by takafumi hori who did other friends and I can make a change songs I may be young but I've been studying animation for 5 years straight so that explains the production value😊
I watched steven universe from season 1 to steven universe future.
I watched it without knowing the show. There was no problem.
I only watched some episode of Steven Universe with my friends and I got enough context for the movie.
So what is the review next time that is a sequel Mat considers really smart?
My all time favorite movie and it was actually a clip from this movie (Spinel's intro song) that finaly got me to watch the series.
1:10 calling out lily orchard is WILD LMAO
me thinks the next review will be Return to neverland because it has a philisophical message about not growing up too fast that kids wont really notice until they grow a bit older and it is a sequel but idk what do you think?
Oh
And you Put The Steven Universe Series as part of The Cartoon Network Animation Lookback back in 2017
you simply need to plan how many episodes of steven you watch in one day, especially since each episode lasts about 10 minutes.
If I want to catch up on this series, but avoid the fillers, I posted such a list on my blog, along with an indication of where to stop, for example, I divided season 1 into parts to make it easier to find time to watch it.
Try reviewing marmaduke 2022
Hopefully you get the chance to watch the tv series, it's pretty good 😄
If I had a nickel for every time Animat watched an animated show's movie before the show itself, I'd have a LOT of nickels.
Hey Ani-Mat, it’s my birthday today, I’m turning 17.
Hey Animat, can you reviews on ROTTMNT: The Movie on next Friday??
TFW, I still wanna give the show a watch not only cause it's a good representation for the LGBTQIA Community, but when I've mostly seen clips, it's interesting with the feels and how the universe (don't know if that's pun intended since it is called Steven Universe) works.
Same goes for the movie because why not.
Can you review hey Arnold the jungle movie?
the fact that this movie tried to bill it as welcoming to newcomers but then 15 minutes in it throws all that in the trash is so funny
What is the next classic review?
