I know four reasons The Powerpuff Girls Movie flopped at the box office: •As usual, Warner Bros. didn't help Cartoon Network to promote the movie properly •They released it at the same time as Lilo & Stitch, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, Scooby Doo and Men in Black II, which were box office hits •Many believed the film was targeted only for girls when in reality it's a movie that boys and grown ups can enjoy, as well •It came out in a time when people was still traumatized by the 9/11 that they couldn't stand seeing buildings being destroyed in TV or films. And the PPG movie has many scenes involving destroyed buildings and explosions
@@ToastyNoneofyourbusiness yeah the destruction they caused during the tag scene didn’t exactly sit well with some after 9/11 happened the year prior. Never thought of that as a kid
Warner Bros is playing strange moves with the Powerpuff Girls IP right now. There's a PPG stage to fight on in Multiversus, and Mojo Jojo shows up as a stage hazard, but there's no playable PPG character in the game now nor has one been announced. Personally I think one character slot where you can select each girl as a "costume" wherein each girl has a signature special move and then they share the other two specials makes the most sense for the game, but I imagine the cost of 3 VAs is the biggest factor in why they aren't in the game already
I personally think this is a decent origin story for both the girls, and their greatest enemy, Mojo Jojo. It can be a messy at times, but it's all worth it for that insane third act.
"For them? The ones who hated you! Have forsaken you! None of them will understand you as I can!" Mojo Jojo always stuck with me in both the show and this film.
Mojo is always the best villain because he’s both threatening, but also a complete nutball. And knowing that it’s Ghostface as his voice makes it all the funnier
Fun fact about this movie, Matt. Craig McCracken wanted the animated band Gorillaz to make a new song for the film but couldn’t due to schedule conflicts, it couldn’t happen. Craig is a close friend of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. Even McCracken did some contributions art for Gorillaz the Now Now art book
@@arbytv5139want to know what’s even funnier about that? During the lore of the band for the Now Now album, Murdoc got arrested and was thrown in jail for supposedly helping a drug lord (he actually didn’t pay his parking tickets. So they needed someone to play the bass in his place and who did they get? They got Ace and yes. The SAME Ace from the Powerpuff Girls was a part of Gorillaz for one album.
I think the box office disappointment of “The Powerpuff Girls Movie” can be similar to “The Emperor’s New Groove”, in terms of how poorly marketed they were. For Disney, back in 2000, the group thought “102 Dalmatians” was easy to sell, while Warner Bros., during the summer of 2002, put their energy on the live-action “Scooby-Doo”. While it’s nice to see them have their own cult followings, it’s such a pity that they were a lost cause during their initial theatrical releases, especially with serious competition also contributing to the financial failures.
At that time the light action feature of Scooby-Doo was not the only thing that the Powerpuff girls movie have they have Men in Black 2 Lilo & stitch and hey Arnold the movie
Scooby Doo and The Powerpuff Girls Movie weren’t the only kids movies that summer, you also had Star Wars episode 2, Spirit, Lilo and Stitch, Hey Arnold the movie, Like Mike, The Crocodile Hunter:Collision Course, Stuart Little 2, The Country Bears, The Master of Disguise and Spy Kids 2. It was a pretty packed summer full of kids movies. So that might be another reason why it bombed.
Animat in the episode where it’s revealed that Mojo is Professor Utonium’s monkey is the same time he himself realizes it so for continuity that’s why they never acknowledge it.
It’s very disappointing this would’ve been a start of Cartoon Network shows having a theatrical movies releases like could you imagine shows like Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Ed,Edd n Eddy, Adventure Time, The Ben 10 franchise, Regular Show, Foster’s home for Imaginary Friends, Codename:Kids Next door, the Grim adventures of Billy and Mandy and more having animated movies on the big screen, if The Powerpuff Girls was a success at the box office?
Heck, even Over the Garden Wall could have been a theatrical feature film, instead of a miniseries, as it has the feeling of watching an independent animated movie in the likes of Ghibli and Cartoon Saloon
When I was eight years old, I really, really, REALLY wanted to see this movie on the big screen very badly. I LOVED the show and every time Cartoon Network showed another ad for it, I only got more and more excited. I pleaded and pleaded with my mother to take me to see it. “Please take to see the Powerpuff Girls movie! I will DIE if I don’t see the Powerpuff Girls movie!” But, I never did get to see it in theaters. To this day, this is one of my biggest regrets.
I got my dad to take me as a kid and don’t regret seeing it. Yeah the movie has issues like Matt says, but I applaud what Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky and company were able to do with the restraints placed on them
I have a similar story, we gad bought the tickets for the PPG movie, and were heading in.. When another kid and his parents asked if they could swap tickets because they got tickets for Scooby Doo and changed their mind. They wanted to see Power Puff Girls instead. I eventually said no and kept the tickets but wonder all the time about the universe in which I hadn't.
"I am your creator, I am your King, I am Mojo Jojo.. OBEY ME!" Can we appreciate how amazing Roger L Jackson is as Mojo Jojo in that film? It's over the top but... well that's Mojo Jojo for you of course he's a over the top character.
And so once again, the day is saved thanks to the Powerpuff Girls. It may not have been their grandest of victories, but it can still be considered a victory regardless, especially since their popularity on television allowed them to shine on the big screen. Meanwhile, for our next review, will the film we'll be looking at be able to seek the thumbs up it's looking for? Find out next time when we get our groove on, not with Emperor Kuzco this time, but with everyone's favorite Patrick Warburton-voiced former henchman who loves making people happy with his cooking, Kronk. That's right! "Kronk's New Groove" is coming up next. "Oh yeah! It's all coming together!"
Fun fact: Creator Craig McCraken stated that due to the politics of the film’s production, he decided to stick with television instead of moving to films like Genndy tartakovsky. It was a lot of stress on him. But when comes to the powerpuff girls movie, I thought it was ok. There are some things i enjoy like the action, the darker tone, and I really love how Mojo this is at his most evil here. He a lot more serious and threatening as an evil genius but still kept the same charm of him from his motor mouth and egotistical moments that are hilarious. But with that it’s just extended episode of the series. The story is a predictable origin story. The animation doesn’t translate to feature film and the characters are all one dimensional. But I do like the Easter eggs of other films like Fuzzy lumpkins and the gang green gang but one character that felt would’ve been interesting to see is actually, HIM. It would’ve been interesting to see how the girls first encounter him. But I give the movie a 6/10. It’s fine for what it was going for but Cartoon Network made better movies than this and ironically they were made for television like Ed Edd n Eddy big picture show or Steven universe the movie.
Genndy has kinda quit movies at this point and gone back to TV with the long-delayed final season of “Samurai Jack” a few years back & currently with “Primal”
I wish Ed Edd n Eddy Big picture show regular show the movie Steven universe the movie and we bare bears the movie got a theatrical release instead of being on television
I’ll always have a soft spot for this movie even with its flaws. I grew up with the show and it was pretty cool for this to come to the big screen as a little girl. I think a lot of script issues stem from the limited runtime, but also coming out during the series run and the lore was mostly already set up in the show except for the early days with the girls as crime fighters
I remember that this movie was such a flop that it caused Cartoon Network to not make any more movies based on their shows direct to theatres. I guess they tried to be like Nickelodeon as they had movies based on their shows but couldn't, but I feel CN and Warner Bros. had no one to blame but themselves because if they gave the movie better marketing, along with releasing it at a time where the 2002 film season wasn't as congested, as it came out at the same time as Lilo and Stitch and Men in Black II, among other big movies, it could've had a chance. I also find it fitting that part of the soundtrack of this movie included a song from girl idol group No Secrets since, like The PowerPuff Girls movie, could never hit it big and only had one album before breaking up. Also, your comments about CN becoming aware of older audiences in the past makes me sad as it was clear this was not the CN we now know as they don't want older audiences anymore, as noted with their cancelations of Young Justice and Infinty Train, and how they almost messed up Steven Universe.
The Powerpuff Girls was the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic of it’s time. Pretty fitting too as many of the crew of PPG (especially Lauren Faust (Craig McCracken’s wife) would be the creator of the show) have worked on MLP:FIM too. Do you guys agree?
It's a a shame too.. Because if the film had done well at the box office, we could have gotten more theater-released movies based on IP's from Cartoon Network
They would only ever consider trying again with Adventure Time but that fell through we would get Teen Titans Go but that's a DC property so It only hafe counts
At least they tried to feature Rick and Morty in Space Jam: A New Legacy (still technically CN since it's produced by Cartoon Network Productions, despite being made at Williams Street.)
If the PPG movie were a box office success, we could have had more theatrical films of other CN shows such as Ed, Edd n' Eddy, Samurai Jack, KND: Kids Next Door and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Come on, even Over the Garden Wall could have been a theatrical film, instead of a miniseries, as it has the feeling of watching an independent movie in the likes of Cartoon Saloon and Ghibli. Also, it's been 22 years since the movie came out, yet WB hasn't released it on blu ray
Fun fact: to celebrate the release of The Powerpuff Girls Movie, TCM had an intro and outro for The Wizard of Oz where the late Robert Osborne interviewed the triplets
I feel shocked for hearing that Craig McCraken is the same dude who worked on Wander Over Yander, also worked on Power Puff Girls. I can’t believe I missed that so much.
5:13 - On the contrary, that particular sequence is actually quite powerful to me both in its colour palette, character animation and even the decisionof not having the soundtrack playing.
If this movie had better marketing and wasn’t released around the same time as Lilo and Stitch and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, then it would’ve managed to perform decently well in the box office.
While I have seen some episodes of the original series when I was a kid (perhaps the last two seasons more than the first four, feel free to feel sorry for me) I grew up more playing the games on the Cartoon Network website. I did also see most of this movie on TV back then, but I wasn't as big of a fan of it because of its unpleasant moments. Anyway, I think I would enjoy the next review coming up than this, Kronk's New Groove. What I expect Aniamt to say about it is that it's not as enjoyable as The Emperor's New Groove, but it still has some noticeable heart in it. EDIT: Also, I think I actually requested that movie for him to review some years ago, so I think that'll be the first time him reviewing a movie that I requested him.
They could have added a little more time to the movie, and made their personalities a little rougher from the start. But I don’t think it’s especially bad that they held their powers in check initially, because the professor told them to, and then they got ahead of themselves when they played tag, as kids might do. The movie probably could have been a little more smoothed out in that regard, I agree.
@@dinkyrobb9993he has to pick it out of the hat or someone has to request to him on Patreon first. You could request it to him as a Patron if you have the money.
@@dinkyrobb9993 I would have to go back and check his retrospective on Winnie the Pooh to see if it's one of his favourites but I believe he has stated that while it's not in his top ten Disney movies The Emperor's New Groove is a favourite of his. I know critics were not kind to it's sequel and neither were fans because it's really cliche. And there is a subplot where Kronk desperately wants approval in the form of a thumbs up.

When I watched this movie last November, I actually really liked this movie and consider this to be one of the better animated TV to movie adaptations that I have seen, and my only real issue with it is the fact that they didn’t seem to really give as much depth to Mojo Jojo as much as they wanted to. Mat really had the nerve to make a Wish reference in the title. According to Mat: All that the girls want is just a little respect, And this is the film they get? (Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do) And this is the film they get? (Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do) And this is the film they get? (Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do) And this is the film they get? (Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do) It seems like Kronk’s New Groove is next. This will be interesting because The Emperor’s New Groove is one of Mat’s favorite Disney movies, so if this ends up disappointing, then Mat won’t be very satisfied.
I'm glad he is finally reviewing more movies based on childhood favorite programs like this- all these series in the early days of the channel are iconic for a reason
I have been a PPG fan for a long time, and I actually have ideas that people actually think should be canon in the next reinstallment of the franchise (I don't know if Craig McCracken himself would like the ideas or will use them since I don't have anyways to contact him). Such as: *More episodes that are centered around the supporting characters & villains to flesh them out more. *Some villains going through redemption arcs. *Additions of new characters like Emma Tywan - The Amanda Waller of the PPG Universe. More teachers at Pokey Oak school The villains' probation officers, one of them is going to be a major key player in their clients' redemption arc. *New superheroes to handle the night-shift (past the Girls' bed time).
To answer your question, the reason why they didn't acknowledge the relationship between Mojo and the Professor in this movie is because that was already touched upon in the series, particularly in the episode where Mojo kidnaps the Professor and forces him to give him super powers. Which leads to a very memorable scene where the Professor brings up that it was Mojo who created the Powerpuff Girls, this makes Mojo go catatonic and repeat the words "It was me?"
I like the movie. Interesting fact about the film: Craig McCracken wanted this film to not be exclusively for girls as at the time CN was selling merch to girls and making the show look more girly than it actually was. The crew behind the film wanted either an action movie or a character study and CN decided to commission both for the plot. That's why the final film is the way it is. Craig would later regret not making it sillier and lighter. Really good review, Mat
It is an origin story, and even though it was ok, i could've expected a bit more...good grief, even a sequel (even if it was a tv movie) would've done it a bit more justice.
I like the idea of Mojo Jojo getting revenge on the girls for taking Prof. Utonium's attention away from him. But since there was already an episode discussing that topic, I feel that would cause continuity issues if that was brought up in this prequel film. Unless Mojo would somehow erase their memories of that detail after the events of the movie. Or maybe Him just for the fun of it.
Nope, this review came out at the right moment and the right time, after so many announcements of the revival of our favorite cartoon shows that we have known since the early 2010s. (Gravity Falls, Regular Show, Adventure Time). Sure AniMat gives the PPG movie a 6/10 but that's all right.
I’m glad my parents were okay with me watching stuff initially intended for a female demographic. I watched Hello Kitty! and the 2003 incarnation of Strawberry Shortcake growing up and my older brother is a Brony.
As a regular episode, it's a nice origin story. But then again, it should've just been a regular special then to be sentenced across movie theaters nationwide. Plus, the 2016 reboot is a major guilty pleasure. Don't judge me!!
I still never got a chance to see this movie while it flopped at the box office back when I turned 10 years old and I would have also seen it on Cartoon Network during its premiere that following year!
Believe it or not, I haven’t seen this movie despite seeing some episodes of the show, but after watching this review, I think might stick to Animat’s advice and just watch the climax and ending. Anyways, next is Kronk’s New Groove. Honestly, I do not know how to feel about this. I remember watching this from time to time when I younger, heck back in my youth, I preferred that movie over the original because as a kid I despised Kuzco with a burning passion and thought he was one of the worst Disney characters ever created, meanwhile I like Kronk in that movie and that’s why I enjoyed his film a lot more. But of course, I grew up and realize the original film is a banger movie and the most hilarious Disney film ever made! Genie: I don’t think so! Not right now! AAH!! Sorry, Genie. I meant second hilarious! But has been years since I saw Kronk’s spin off film, so I am intrigued to hear Animat’s thoughts. But before Animat gets to that, he does have to go back into Riley’s mind and see how her old and new emotions are doing.
@@abnormand78most of those movies are terrible. Only one I actually like is “Lion King 2”, but Return to Neverland, Cinderella 3 and Lion King 1 & 1/2 aren’t too bad
I actually really liked the movie but I totally understand your points. There are some flaws in the story and characterization. The biggest bummer was the relationship between Mojo and the Professor because there is no relationship between them. It feels like they're total strangers. So I totally agree that it's unfortunate that the movie didn't get more into the relationship between Mojo and the Professor.
The Professor was low-key shafted. He didn't even get an interview, yet even the Mayor got one. Even one of the background characters who was in the film got one. But not the most important male figure in the Powerpuff Girls' lives? That crosses the line.
I think the Powerpuff Girls Movie was great with an amazing plot revolving around the origins of the girls but the real reason it failed in theaters in my opinion was because of the year it came out in 2002 there were a lot of big names in the animation world coming out that same year and unfortunately this was the movie in the lineup that ended up bombing in terms of ratings.
Ngl, I do like the PPG movie as it has been a CN household favorite for me. It’s not a huge theatrical spectacle as intended, but it is a fun origin story that probably would’ve been better for a tv or straight to home media release.
This film deserves to be successful. AniMat's Classic Reviews Requests: Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue Space Jam Thomas and the Magic Railroad Monsters, Inc. And don't forget Fantasia 2000, Three Caballeros, and then It's Make Mine Music and it's only sequel Now It's Melody Time! And aso We Are The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything Tale. An Original VeggieTales Cinematic too.
I’m surprised no other Cartoon Network shows round that time like Dexter’s Lab, Johnny Bravo and Courage the Cowardly Dog followed the theatrical route. But at least the first two shows got movies. Along with Ben 10, Codename Kids Next Door, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, Teen Titans, Regular Show, Steven Universe, etc. Why couldn’t Adventure Time, or Juniper Lee have a film? Plus, you should review Ben 10: Secret of the Omnitrix and the 2020 Ben 10 film, based on the awful 2016 reboot.
I’d still love for this movie, even the series, to be on 4K and greater home-release! Maybe even bring Craig on for another PPG movie as an anniversary event or something.
I remember this movie aired one random Sunday on Cartoon Network at 7am, and I woke up early just to catch it… I think the movie felt like licorice. Cartoon Network tried to be like Nickelodeon and unfortunately couldn’t do it. I’d say Hey Arnold! The Movie, which came out same year, was more exciting.
You and I have very different opinions. Lol When I was a kid like every movie that would come out I would be truly excited for and I absolutely loved seeing my favorite TV shows up on the big screen as well. I sadly missed out on Hey Arnold the Movie up on the big screen while I thankfully saw The Powerpuff Girls Movie on my 9th birthday for my Powerpuff Girls themed birthday party up on the big screen. I love The Powerpuff Girls and absolutely loved the movie and still to this day I own it on DVD. :) I also always loved Hey Arnold and finally got to see the movie over at one of my best friends', Ashley's house. I enjoyed it, but, it hugely disappointed me and didn't catch my interest too much because I felt like it was way too short. I never bothered to see it again till many years later as a young adult. Even then I can see why I felt that way towards the movie even when I was 9.
I don't get it. Why do these people think this movie is decent or okay ? Am I the only one who hates this movie with a passion because of its similarities to Chicken Little, where the young protagonists live with a single father and are shunned by incredibly unpleasant citizens after accidentally destroying their town ? The Powerpuff Girls is supposed to be an homage to the superhero parodies of the 1960s like Underdog and Adam West's Batman. Here it's like they wanted it to be like the X-Men, especially the prejudice part. Not to mention it contained a lot of building destruction that occurred a couple of months after 9/11, which many people were still traumatized after this event. Hell, even the late great Roger Ebert compared the tag scene to the infamous event. The art style is not great either. It's still the same thing that destroyed the series in the last seasons under the guidance of a baby-faced creep. And the final nail in the coffin, Craig McCracken's irresponsibility not only cost him his career as a film director, but also the movies of other CN series, such as Ed, Edd n Eddy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, KND: Kids Next Door , Foster's. Home of Imaginary Friends, Camp Lazlo, Ben 10, Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Steven Universe will be translated to television instead of the big screen. As for the Powerpuff Girls itself, it never recovered, being given a crappy legacy, such as an anime series that only focuses on its juvenile humor, a CGI special that makes no sense, and let's not get started on the infamous 2016 Reboot or the cancelled live-action series by CW.
It has nothing to do with Chicken Little if anything CL is a bad version of the JImmy Neutron movie with them both having ailens , the Professor is a way better father than Buck . The whole town disownign and shunnign them hold more water unlike the towns folks in CL who got on a kid's case for a year for one little mistake the girls casue way more damage in an afternoon in a real world context that would cost over a billion dollars. Chicken Little didnt cause that much danage and yet the towns folks cant get over it . Isnt the whole town or villiage shunning one or a few outcasts also the plot in A Bugs Life so by this logic The PPG movie is also similar to that movie but it being an orgin story it makes logical sense for the girls to have earned their reputantion in the show. It isnt fair to acuse Craig of other CN movies to not get put on the big screen if anything CN is to blame . Are movies like EEnE Big Picture Show or KND Zero any worse if there not in theaters ? The Anime series was alright but i do agree on the 2016 series.
@@aidanhever3369 no it's TRUE as Powerpuff girls movie has absolutely nothing in common with Chicken Little if anything I'd say it's more similar to a Bug's Life. And regardless on how the movie bombed would movies like Regular Show movie and Steven Universe movie be any better on the big screen ? Or audience would just feel the same with the exact same plot in there tv movie .
And speaking of [adult swim], in one of their early shows, The Brak Show in Season 3 Episode 1 “Braklet, Prince of Spaceland” at the end of that episode, Zorak says “watch the Powerpuff Girls movie on DVD!” And around the time when the movie was coming out, Cartoon Network made a promo with Brak promoting the movie while his show was on AS at the same time.
4:08 The intended message is not harmful, yet the phrasing of it can easily be interpreted as the speaking from a privileged background or an arrogant mindset. In this case, it's easy for the Professor not to get that angry since they were his creations/children and it wasn't his house they destroyed. He obviously wants to comfort them, yet he forgets that the damage has already been done, and he did nothing to make them acknowledge their mistake, much less fix it. As a result, he ends up having to deal with angry townspeople due to his lack of responsibility as a parent and as an inventor/scientist.
I LOVE THE POWERPUFF GIRLS!!! It’s my favorite Cartoon Network series!💙💖💚 (I’ll just pretend that the 2016 reboot doesn’t exist…😖) As for the movie, I think it still works as an origin story and has some memorable moments. The animation does get a nice update, and the characters & voice cast are great as always. (I absolutely agree with you on Roger L. Jackson as Mojo Jojo! I can’t get enough of those epic speeches! 🤯) Despite bombing at the box office and being overshadowed by other animated films based on a series. I consider this to be an underrated gem and I gladly give this an 8/10! And the next Classic Review is going to be!🤩 A Disney direct-to-video sequel, great…😑
I think the biggest problem of this movie is that most of the potential they could have put into the film, they had already done in the Powerpuff Girls TV series. It’s kind of a shame that after the powerpuff girls movie, Cartoon Network would never release anymore films of their shows until 2018 with Teen Titans go to the movies.
This is all Craig McCracken's fault. Nope, I don't care that it was the executives of CN who were behind this blunder. He had no one to blame but himself.
I'm guessing The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) and The Simpsons Movie (2007) will probably remain at the only Two Theatrical Western Animated Movies based on TV shows that has received the Animat Seal of Approval which I think that's kind of sad if you think about it.
South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm also got the seal. If you include british shows, so did Curse of the Were-Rabbit, which he gave a 10/10.
Remember if this movie did well in the box office we could have got movies based on Ed Edd and Eddy Samurai Jack Ben 10 code name kids next door Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends Dexter's Laboratory Adventure Time Regular Show The Amazing World of Gumball Steven Universe and so many more if only this film did well in the box office
Atleast regular show, fosters, ed edd n eddy, knd, steven universe and dexters all got some kind of movie despite not being like a origin story full length one all were good enough skipping theater releases and both adventure time and gumball are due to get one coming soon
It would be great to see all of them on the big screen if the Powerpuff girls Movie succeeded is Warner Brothers took care of it instead of the live-action movie of Scooby-Doo when it comes for marketing and release in a Time when there is not competition
I AM FEELING NOSTALGIC!!! I had seen The PPG Movie when I was 10 years old since I was a fan of The Powerpuff Girls ( the classic one) and it was really great! I am not the only one who loves The PPG though. I really love the fan arts of the PPG by Levi Bryant and the original comics posted by Powerpuff Fan #22! It's really cool in my POV! Also, Father's Day is coming up and Professor Utonium is the perfect example of it! ❤💙💚
I personally enjoyed this movie, even though I'm not much of a fan of Powerpuff Girls, but I think releasing it in theaters was a mistake. You can practically smell the made-for-TV quality with the animation. Every other feature length expansion of a Cartoon Network show (except Toddler Titans) knew it would never succeed in cinemas. How did the filmmakers expect this to go against Lilo & Stitch, Ice Age, and freakin' Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron?

I still enjoy this movie but I do agree that this movie does feel a little too rushed and slow. You make a good point that if they acknowledged the former dynamic between Professor Utonium and Mojo, it would’ve made it stronger.
I remember having this movie on VHS as a kid due to being a big fan of PPG. And while I don’t remember much about the film itself, other than the girls accidentally destroying the city playing tag and everyone hating them as a result, I do distinctly recall this Dexter’s Laboratory episode that always played before it. It was the one where Dexter gets chicken pox, and it was honestly lowkey traumatizing for younger me.💀
I know four reasons The Powerpuff Girls Movie flopped at the box office:
•As usual, Warner Bros. didn't help Cartoon Network to promote the movie properly
•They released it at the same time as Lilo & Stitch, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, Scooby Doo and Men in Black II, which were box office hits
•Many believed the film was targeted only for girls when in reality it's a movie that boys and grown ups can enjoy, as well
•It came out in a time when people was still traumatized by the 9/11 that they couldn't stand seeing buildings being destroyed in TV or films. And the PPG movie has many scenes involving destroyed buildings and explosions
Damn, i didn't even think of the 9/11 aspect. Talk about bad timing...
That's one of my main criticisms. Hell, even the late great Roger Ebert compared the tag scene to the infamous event.
Fun Fact: the "You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!" scene was a reshoot out of respect for 9/11.
and opening against men in black 2 didn't help
@@ToastyNoneofyourbusiness yeah the destruction they caused during the tag scene didn’t exactly sit well with some after 9/11 happened the year prior. Never thought of that as a kid
Over 20 years later & Warner Bros. STILL hasn't released this on digital. What the heck is taking them so long?
And Blu-Ray too.
Good point. Especially since Cats Don’t Dance got a Blu-Ray not too long ago.
Strange, especially since they have released more obscure titles I think warner archive collection should get on that now.
They never will, unfortunately. Because the OG Powerpuff Girls are no longer on Max.
I personally think this is a decent origin story for both the girls, and their greatest enemy, Mojo Jojo. It can be a messy at times, but it's all worth it for that insane third act.
It would've been nice to have mojo and the professor's relationship be similar to Tai lung and shifu in the first Kung Fu Panda.
Although this relationship was briefly in the episode of the show “Mr. Mojo's Rising”, which was the first time Mojo’s origin was revealed
"For them? The ones who hated you! Have forsaken you! None of them will understand you as I can!"
Mojo Jojo always stuck with me in both the show and this film.
Mojo Jojo is the best villain.
Mojo is always the best villain because he’s both threatening, but also a complete nutball. And knowing that it’s Ghostface as his voice makes it all the funnier
Mojo Jojo was the best character of the show
Fun fact about this movie, Matt.
I guess that explains why one of the characters on their covers looks like Ace of the gangreene gang
@@ltmmoviereviewsharrison3462 I saw like 75% of those movies at the time 😆
Speaking of which, I’m guessing the next classic review is Kronk’s New Groove
Emperors new groove had more merch than the Powerpuff girls movie.
Animat in the episode where it’s revealed that Mojo is Professor Utonium’s monkey is the same time he himself realizes it so for continuity that’s why they never acknowledge it.
Craig Mckracken's other shows, Fosters Home, Wander Over Yonder and Kid Cosmic are absolute masterpieces ;)
I love Wander Over Yonder
As much as I like the original Powerpuff Girls but one episode that I really hate is “town and out”
Foster’s was another childhood favorite
It’s very disappointing this would’ve been a start of Cartoon Network shows having a theatrical movies releases like could you imagine shows like Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Ed,Edd n Eddy, Adventure Time, The Ben 10 franchise, Regular Show, Foster’s home for Imaginary Friends, Codename:Kids Next door, the Grim adventures of Billy and Mandy and more having animated movies on the big screen, if The Powerpuff Girls was a success at the box office?
Yeah not to mention Steven universe and we bare bears
Heck, even Over the Garden Wall could have been a theatrical feature film, instead of a miniseries, as it has the feeling of watching an independent animated movie in the likes of Ghibli and Cartoon Saloon
Excuse me I'm going back in time to fix this grave injustice seriously the shows deserves to be on the big screen
OBEY ME!"
Can we appreciate how amazing Roger L Jackson is as Mojo Jojo in that film? It's over the top but... well that's Mojo Jojo for you of course he's a over the top character.
His vocal work here is just utter joy and hilarious to listen to both here and on the show. He’s always been mine and my mom’s favorite villain
He passed out in the studio after recording that
@@radicaIized as much as I don’t doubt it happening, how did you know that it even did?
I agreed.
@@LucyLioness100 Isn’t he working on “Fixed” a 2d animated R-rated movie?
Cartoon Network's first theatrical film
I'm surprised that Cartoon Network don't make more theatrical films like Nickelodeon does.
I liked the Dexter's Lab movie. Very fun.
And it was their only one until that forgettable TTG (Teen Titans Go) movie. Granted I never saw that, just cleaned it at the theatre I worked for
@@PanAndScanBuddy 5:09 is there really a name for this?
@@alienboy1322, the Regular Show movie got a limited release in theaters.
It’s My Little Pony meets The Incredibles
Any project that has McCracken, Faust, or Rob Renzetti involved, I'll watch it for sure.
I saw this in theaters with my siblings and babysitter, about a few months after we finally got Cartoon Network at our house.
It didn't go seasonal rot at the time.
Not to mention regular show Steven universe and we bare bears
Spider-Man came out and stole everyone's thunder that summer.
Well that movie is awesome
And lilo and stitch
And Shrek 2 2004
And Ku Fu Panda 2 2011
Fun fact: to celebrate the release of The Powerpuff Girls Movie, TCM had an intro and outro for The Wizard of Oz where the late Robert Osborne interviewed the triplets
I feel shocked for hearing that Craig McCraken is the same dude who worked on Wander Over Yander, also worked on Power Puff Girls. I can’t believe I missed that so much.
5:13 - On the contrary, that particular sequence is actually quite powerful to me both in its colour palette, character animation and even the decisionof not having the soundtrack playing.
The animation from this movie carried over to Season 5 and 6.
I actually prefer the style of those seasons over the first 4 because it looks cleaner.
Still better than the reboot
Thumbs up? This can only mean one thing! Next time on AniMat's Classic Reviews: KRONK'S NEW GROOVE
Is this 100% gonna be the next classic review tho?
I honestly think that the Powerpuff Girls movie was a great origin story for them and was a great movie.
You know that you're in for a good movie when the TV spots are announced by Transformers LEGEND Peter Cullen.
I love Professor Utonium's line about understanding one's special, unique qualities.
If this movie had better marketing and wasn’t released around the same time as Lilo and Stitch and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, then it would’ve managed to perform decently well in the box office.
Maybe Craig McCracken can try again with a Spider-Verse/TMNT Mutant Mayhem-style film with the girls being voiced by actual child actresses.
Kronk’s New Groove is next, it looks like!
But what about Winnie the Pooh 1977 reviewed

@@dinkyrobb9993 I would have to go back and check his retrospective on Winnie the Pooh to see if it's one of his favourites but I believe he has stated that while it's not in his top ten Disney movies The Emperor's New Groove is a favourite of his.
According to Mat:
All that the girls want is just a little respect,
And this is the film they get? (Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do)

And this is the film they get? (Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do)
It seems like Kronk’s New Groove is next. This will be interesting because The Emperor’s New Groove is one of Mat’s favorite Disney movies, so if this ends up disappointing, then Mat won’t be very satisfied.
I’ll gladly take this movie over the 2016 reboot any day.
Me too
That reboot sucks
I'm glad he is finally reviewing more movies based on childhood favorite programs like this- all these series in the early days of the channel are iconic for a reason
I have been a PPG fan for a long time, and I actually have ideas that people actually think should be canon in the next reinstallment of the franchise (I don't know if Craig McCracken himself would like the ideas or will use them since I don't have anyways to contact him).
Such as:
*More episodes that are centered around the supporting characters & villains to flesh them out more.
*Some villains going through redemption arcs.
*Additions of new characters like
Emma Tywan - The Amanda Waller of the PPG Universe.
More teachers at Pokey Oak school
The villains' probation officers, one of them is going to be a major key player in their clients' redemption arc.
*New superheroes to handle the night-shift (past the Girls' bed time).
Called it Kronks new groove is the next review
Eh, it's unfortunate that it's an origin story for how long the show was out for, but the movie honestly kicks ass
I thought I had to wait longer for this and now it's FINALLY HERE! Animat's classic reviews The powerpuff girls movie (2002)
I never got to see this theaters like I wanted to. My mom refused to take me to a “girls” movie
I’m glad my parents were okay with me watching stuff initially intended for a female demographic. I watched Hello Kitty! and the 2003 incarnation of Strawberry Shortcake growing up and my older brother is a Brony.
And the next classic review is: Disney's Kronk's new Groove!
That's right!
I remember that Cartoon Network had their own nascar team and the powerpuff girls was one of the paint schemes, it was pink
As much as I like the original Powerpuff Girls but one episode that I really hate is “Town and Out”
Why do you hate that one?
Kronk's new groove is next
What about Pooh 1977
I can tell Animat will not Kronk's New Groove very much. Y'all know how he feels about direct-to-video Disney sequels.
@@abnormand78most of those movies are terrible. Only one I actually like is “Lion King 2”, but Return to Neverland, Cinderella 3 and Lion King 1 & 1/2 aren’t too bad
@LucyLioness100, I get that, I meant that HE, Animat, does not like a lot of them
Something tells me the next review will be Kronk’s new groove
The characters did get redesigns for this movie that carried over to the seasons done by CN Studios after Hanna Barbera closed down
I actually really liked the movie but I totally understand your points.
I think the Powerpuff Girls Movie was great with an amazing plot revolving around the origins of the girls but the real reason it failed in theaters in my opinion was because of the year it came out in 2002 there were a lot of big names in the animation world coming out that same year and unfortunately this was the movie in the lineup that ended up bombing in terms of ratings.
and yet 20 Years Warner Bros has yet to re-release it on Blu-Ray let along tack down the DVD set to The Powerpuff Girls
The movie hasn't been released on digital either.

That's correct!
Coming soon to animat's classic reviews, Kronks new Groove. Will he give it thumbs up or the nostril flare of total rejection?
Hey Kronk. Looks like your movie is gonna get reviewed next
If I were CN, I'd honestly have passed up Craig's PPG Movie pitch in favor of Genndy's proposed cinematic finale to Samurai Jack.
What I really hated about this movie is that the Mayor arrested The Professor OVER FUCKING PICKELS, LIKE WHO ARRESTS SOMEONE OVET PICKLES
That’s the point. The Mayor is a dimwitted and stupid character, which provides for the existence of Ms. Bellum.
I still own a VHS Copy of this in my W-B Media Collection
Dang it, "Kronk's New Groove" is up next, and I was really hoping for AniMat to go and review "Pinocchio (1940 'Disney' Film)"!😖👎💯
Lol
When I was a kid like every movie that would come out I would be truly excited for and I absolutely loved seeing my favorite TV shows up on the big screen as well.
I also always loved Hey Arnold and finally got to see the movie over at one of my best friends', Ashley's house.
I enjoyed it, but, it hugely disappointed me and didn't catch my interest too much because I felt like it was way too short.
I never bothered to see it again till many years later as a young adult.
Even then I can see why I felt that way towards the movie even when I was 9.
@@andreasmeelie1889 I suppose that’s fair. I was born 3 years after the movies released

You know not everybody talks about The Powerpuff Girls nowindays but I’m surprised that you’re making a rant review about it.
It’s my favorite Cartoon Network series!💙💖💚
(I’ll just pretend that the 2016 reboot doesn’t exist…😖)
As for the movie, I think it still works as an origin story and has some memorable moments. The animation does get a nice update, and the characters & voice cast are great as always. (I absolutely agree with you on Roger L. Jackson as Mojo Jojo! I can’t get enough of those epic speeches! 🤯)
Despite bombing at the box office and being overshadowed by other animated films based on a series.
I consider this to be an underrated gem and I gladly give this an 8/10!
And the next Classic Review is going to be!🤩
A Disney direct-to-video sequel, great…😑
And so, once again, the film is reviewed, thanks to….. AniMat!
You seen the sonic 3 trailer?
@@DamnZtar yeah, but what does that have to do with this?

The Powerpuff girls movie is a prequel to the original series.
@@Darian610Oh right, I almost forgot about those movies thanks though.
Remember if this movie did well in the box office we could have got movies based on
Ed Edd and Eddy
Samurai Jack
Ben 10
code name kids next door
Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends
Dexter's Laboratory
Adventure Time
Regular Show
The Amazing World of Gumball
Steven Universe and so many more if only this film did well in the box office
You forgot to mention that there are deleted scenes of the movie.
11:47 I'd knew I'd found it strange how they threw in The Aqua Teen Hunger Force as a Cameo in The Powerpuff Girls movie
the show did a mojo origins episode that this movie ignores wtf also you're doing kronks new groove next oh boy
Warner Archive Collection should release the movie on Blu-ray, including, "Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992)."

Since everyone at Disney is celebrating Donald Duck's 90th Anniversary can you do a movie that stars him and his South American cousins on his birthday and teach him about Brazil and Mexico?
I still enjoy this movie but I do agree that this movie does feel a little too rushed and slow. You make a good point that if they acknowledged the former dynamic between Professor Utonium and Mojo, it would’ve made it stronger.
This was the first movie I ever watched in a movie theater with my parents
I remember having this movie on VHS as a kid due to being a big fan of PPG. And while I don’t remember much about the film itself, other than the girls accidentally destroying the city playing tag and everyone hating them as a result, I do distinctly recall this Dexter’s Laboratory episode that always played before it. It was the one where Dexter gets chicken pox, and it was honestly lowkey traumatizing for younger me.💀
Great childhood movie.
