This visit by the Singapore FM seems to be planned just before AB visit to China. I think AB wanted to get a neutral view of certain issues before meeting with Chinese officials.

Not taking sides is written in english which is an art open to many interpretations as cooperation can manifest in countless possible configurations
When it comes to the selection of high level officials in Singapore, it is the cream of crop they select, highly versatile and outstanding in their language and attitude, demeanor. Don't know too much about the country to judge, of course, there are ways they govern their country, I may disagree. But so far I have seen only the superb. As a south Korean, I doubt the incumbent S. Korean foreign minister would ever be nearly as competent as Mr. Balakrishnan in the utilization of language and diplomatic skill in the global stage. I'm fascinated every time he conducts a press conference and interview.

Meanwhile China continues to sow distrust between itself and the entire Asia Pacific (not just ASEAN). China had a great opportunity to wrestle more of the global economy towards itself but post-COVID the sands are shifting. It’s not that everyone will stop trade with China, but they are trying to grow business elsewhere and depend less on China. Supply chain disruptions caused chaos during COVID.
China right now is a big rising power that is only too happy to abuse its might and take advantage of other smaller states, exactly like the United States everyone likes to chastise. The Philippines is one example. They were long time US supporters, switched to China only briefly, and now firmly back to supporting the US as a consequence of China’s South China Sea illegal territory grabbing.
