I think Wario lives in a weird grey area between gross stinky pig man and endearing flawed cute video game protagonist... Hard to explain how he's both cute and not cute at the same time
@@Lute01 I think it's about shame and cringe. We despise people who are unaware of how cringe they are, but if someone is cringe and aware find them more approachable and humane, usually because it means they can self-improve. Wario is funny because he is aware that he is "cringe" in the eyes of the viewers but he doesn't give a fuck, and being a cartoon the consequences of his flaws can be self-contained and harmless. He has all the makings of a parody of a greedy bad guy but without noticeable negative consequences the viewer can just grab pop-corn and safely side with the heel for a while without feeling uncomfortable, and we all even kinda feel better people by comparison

Wario ONLY cares about getting money. Mario gets powerful from powerups? Wario's powerups HURT him. Mario saves the princess? Wario's archenemy COULD be a princess.

Man that's a mood. So many games have incredible OSTs made by very talented composers, but people hearing its from a game and generally not being stock radio genres really turns them off to the idea
I like the ending a lot because Wario sharing a laugh with the Princess cat is like, the one time in the whole series the game doesn't end in a pure "oh he's just a greedy asshole" note, it makes it feel very special among those and even the Wariowares. Not that an ending like that should be the norm for Wario, but it's plenty heartwarming and goes really well with the wistful credits sequence where you reminisce about the batshit crazy drugtrip adventure you just had. Yeah, also love your laidback narrative style, this was a pretty fun watch. Cheers!
Wario starts the virtual boy one by just relaxing next to a waterfall because he thought it was beautiful and wanted to vacation there, in nature with not much on him, he only happened to see the huge amount of treasure being taken into a cave and decided then to looks at it, getting trapped and having to escape
It's perhaps my favorite ending in anything, purely for that moment and the credits with him driving home with a bag full of treasures as memories splay out across the background.

While I'd love to hear more work from the composer too, perhaps he doesn't differentiate much between the two mediums? I remember losing my shit when I picked up the cd somewhere between musiq concrete and industrial as a kid (grew up with a lot of Skuppy tapes played in my house lol). Coming back to it years later, I was struck by how many of the cds weren't really music at all, just moods and soundscapes composed of noises. It was just a strange enthralling game and I think the atmosphere is the big part of it.
Wario somehow felt like both a “strong guy” and a “stinky and greedy idiot” character at the same time. Despite the fact he’s made out to be kind of stupid as of recent, he certainly used to come off as him being in control of the situation. In the advertisements of wario land 2, rather than being a normal person and being scared or worried of transformations like being set on fire and being squished, he *thanks* the enemies that give him the transformation. Got squished and are as flat as a pancake? Thanks man! Got his ass set on fire? Thank you! Wario Land Shake It decided to emphasize the strong “macho” aspect of him and it was amazing. In the smash series, his render in ultimate is him doing a pose like a wrestler approaching the ring, basically assuring his own victory. In Mario Kart 8, when you win a race as him, he says “Wario, the legend!” as if he is so proud of himself to the point he would go down as a legend in racing from winning. To me he’s always passed off as more of a strong guy with an affinity for treasure and a little full of himself rather than the fat, greedy, stinky idiot who Nintendo tries to present him as in the WarioWare series. Mario Party has some of his victory animations flex his muscles. In 7 one of his animations has him flex them, (the other is him pointing in the sky, emphasizing him being full of himself) in Superstars, both of the animations are him flexing his muscles at the end of it. It feels like the warioware series has tried to present him as a fat, greedy idiot who stinks. But he’s much more than that. He’s a strong and fat guy who has an affinity for treasure and is full of himself. (He even had a castle prior to WarioWare, and then it just disappears at some point, and now he just has a terrible house.)
I'm pretty sure that Princess Shokora different appereances are representing her growth, the good one where she has short hair represents an adult form while the normal ending is a more like a child(?) I don't know but I always though it was something like that, anyways, amazing video dude!
Wario Land 4 is a GBA gem. I could listen to the Monsoon Jungle theme all day and not get tired of it. This was a nice trip now to memory line. This game does rules, and serves a re-release of some kind (and no, NSO does not count).
My grandma bought me this game when I was a kid. It was also one of my first GBA games and it left a mark on me. I've never experienced the same feeling as while playing this game. It's filled with a unique sinister goofiness that was so addicting for me as a kid. I'm an adult now but I sometimes think about this game, randomly humming some of its tunes. Thank you for such a great tribute
a friend of mine sent me your Star Fox assault review and I've honestly just fallen in love with your style of humor and reviewing. I'm 25 and I don't remember the last time I've laughed this hard at jokes in a UA-cam video. Love your channel
As a Shadow the Hedgehog fan I appreciate every reference to it ever. Also wonderful vid; came here from Geno7's and it's a great companion piece. You earned a sub!
I love how the Wario Land series progressively gets weirder as it goes on. Wario Land 1 is a super standard 2D platformer with only some weird elements, then Wario Land 2 flips the switch by making Wario immortal and introducing the weird abilities. Wario Land 3 is really weird in how it progresses since there's no clear direction to go, and by Wario Land 4 everything has become so warped and twisted that even the sound design and music get affected. I kinda miss when Wario was the 2D platformer series for Nintendo while Mario was doing 3D and Donkey Kong Country was on hiatus, but now with Kirby going 3D they aren't making any 2D platformers anymore besides Metriod Dread. Maybe it's just wishful thinking but I think they could do a Wario Land 5 justice if they got the WarioWare guys to provide the visual style and the bizarre ideas.
For any fan of this game ! If you didn’t know already, there is a romhack which is a total conversion of the game called parallel world! When i first saw this i felt so much joy and was as hyped as a kid !
If you think about it, all Wario games sound very weird, starting with this one I think. Their trademark is the the bizarre echo-y voices, there's nothing like it.
Pikmin 3 was actually a really solid game for it's sound design and weirdness, so at least we see some gems popping up here and there! But still, would be awesome if he'd gain full control on a project somehow
Growing up playing the Wario land series and Wario world made Wario become my favorite character in the Mario universe, always pick him in the spin-off games. These games still hold up today and they're more fun than any 2D Mario game that I've played.
24:32 - You have no idea, how I adore these moments, where anything, in this case, a name, can bring an association to something else, that makes it so individual and personal, I just love it. :D And Yes, I looked up the song and it does bop 😌
It’s amazing how much production value this game has, it ooze’s creativity, this is the Nintendo I remember and miss, it seems these days, there becoming even more child friendly and sanitized for the mainstream players, at least we still get wariowqre games.
I feel like Mario Wonder couldn’t have happened without Wario. It’s like they gave a Mario game a Wario blood transfusion, giving it just a little bit more weirdness than usual.
As someone who absolutely loves Wario Land 4 as well, my choice for the passages at least on normal mode are the Emerald Passage first, then the Ruby Passage for it's moderate difficulty and because I can tolerate the fridge level, then the Sapphire Passage due to its harder difficulty, and finally ending at the Topaz Passage because I have major trouble with the board game and art level. Also I find the boss really hard and I always need to go to the store and buy the boss' specific weakness to beat it.
Really enjoyed this commentary on a game you love. I wish Nintendo kept this series going. I always wanted to play the Wario Land series growing up, but I never had the opportunity to. I'm sure if I did I would be super nostalgic for one of the titles. The only entry I remember playing briefly was Wario Land: SHAKE IT!! after my mom rented from a local blockbuster for me. Now I know how fantastic Wario Land 4 is, thanks chief! 😳
I‘d say the „best“ ending would be the Princess while the Queen form feels more like her „true“ Self, where she can express her maturity and I respect that.
I sometimes forget just how much i love the outro song. its also rather funny how different the endings turn out based on how much treasure you get. the princess has different forms. one of which is a rather funny ugly sister look and wario is pretty sickened lmao.
Wario Land 4 and Metroid Prime are two games from my childhood I try to replay at least once every year. The game design is just so good, they never really become stale and the fast completion time means they don't overstay their welcome either. With MP Remastered and Pizza Tower having come out within a week of each other was one the best surprises ever. I dearly want another WL game. Make it happen Nintendo!
Im stunned, this is the best video ever, i can relate so much to it that it’s almost uncanny. The humor („wario homunculi“), the direction/narration and all the details. Like the screenshots you weaved in, musical references and graphical details like that you used Gigi Masin‘s etruscan styled album cover as a background at one point is so amazing. It makes me believe that a work of art as expressive as Wario Land 4 has influenced you and the audience of this video so much like me when we were confronted with the game at a young age. Beautiful to see the internet doing the thing it was made for in such a specific way, bringing people together💧i plaid with the thought that it was Wario Land 4 amongst other things which opened my mind for art and music a lot, and this video confirmed it! Wow just wow i cant wait to watch more of you
There was honestly something magical about the CD that made them feel like an actual treasure even though they served no-practical function and there was nothing about them that stood out as valuable other than their sheer novelty. That's the feeling I always suspected open world games base don exploration could capture . . . By comparison, finding a new weapon or consumable -- the kind of rewards games normally hold out for you -- are forgettable. Nothing about finding a dragon flying over Hyrule that you never expected in a million years to be there as it sweeps down the length of Eldin bridge in all it's majesty is forgettable and you can't even collect the thing. Funnily enough, I always projected a relatable persona similar to Wario, if going less for the gross factor, onto Link rather than thinking of him as a stoic badass. BOTW has a fair number of moments like this, like all the little animations where Link is cooking, punching chests to open them, his appetite, and being molested by giant fairies.
Wario is the edgy-dreamworks version of Mario. He is the gaming equivalent of Shrek. That's both why he's everything Nintendo needs, but the last thing their corporate sensibilities would incline them to actually make. (Not that Dreamworks isn't just as capitalist as Disney; there the analogy breaks down.)
Wario is just awesome and so Are his games. Glad I‘m not the only one who loves the sound test and it’s weird compressed „music“. Gotta say though, even tho this is probably the best game in the series, the third one is still my favorite for nostalgia reasons but also due to its interesting progression
Emulating Wario Land 4 you get to enjoy the both charming and sometimes horrifying character design like Spoiled Rotten. Growing up, I was always tad scared seeing these abominations the scrunched screen of my Gameboy SP Now I savor the both cute and horrifying designs emulating. Shading like Keyser and Rotten's grotesque smile

In shake he lived in his garage and slept in his car
I'm pretty sure that Princess Shokora different appereances are representing her growth, the good one where she has short hair represents an adult form while the normal ending is a more like a child(?)
I don't know but I always though it was something like that, anyways, amazing video dude!
I love returning to this video. Amazing work man love seeing what you put out!
This is a good review type thing
thanks! this is a good comment type thing.
As a Shadow the Hedgehog fan I appreciate every reference to it ever.
Also wonderful vid; came here from Geno7's and it's a great companion piece. You earned a sub!
holy shit I also like Wario Land 4?? HE'S JUST LIKE ME
I love how the Wario Land series progressively gets weirder as it goes on.
Hopefully they go back to 2D games more now after their announcement of Mario Bros Wonder. But Wario Land 5 should have a drawn / cell shading look.
Your review style kinda reminds me of Running Shine, but more laid back. Its pretty good. Not to mention the games you review are ballers.
Frigging love the warioland games
Pikmin 3 was actually a really solid game for it's sound design and weirdness, so at least we see some gems popping up here and there! But still, would be awesome if he'd gain full control on a project somehow
It’s always a good day when there’s a new Lute video!
Growing up playing the Wario land series and Wario world made Wario become my favorite character in the Mario universe, always pick him in the spin-off games. These games still hold up today and they're more fun than any 2D Mario game that I've played.
I didn’t know that there was a 3rd difficulty
Now you have me another reason to jump back in
Your reviews make me feel hella comfy
I also like how the music in WL4 return as themes in ware
14:38 "Look, Ma! There I am! I'm on TV!"
Thanks for helping him find the right instruments man
@@Lute01 No prob! :)
Early 2000's weird Nintendo was the peak. Same with Dreamcast Sega.
I feel like Mario Wonder couldn’t have happened without Wario. It’s like they gave a Mario game a Wario blood transfusion, giving it just a little bit more weirdness than usual.
Just found your Paper Mario video and watched it and this one. Keep it up these videos are great and I can't wait to see more!
Thank you! I'll keep makin' em! Glad you had fun watching
I grew up with a blue gameboy advance and warioland 4 for christmas one year. I think that one was one of the best years.
I get what you mean with the game feeling like Yume Nikki with how varied the level themes are
Wario is a silly man and his games are just as silly, something that me and my brother always liked and have an all around fun time with him
As someone who absolutely loves Wario Land 4 as well, my choice for the passages at least on normal mode are the Emerald Passage first, then the Ruby Passage for it's moderate difficulty and because I can tolerate the fridge level, then the Sapphire Passage due to its harder difficulty, and finally ending at the Topaz Passage because I have major trouble with the board game and art level.
Ayyy I thought I was the only one who rented Wario Land Shake It from Blockbuster once as a kid

Queen -- Best Ending
Princess - True Ending
Baby - Bad Ending
Warioette - oh god no
I‘d say the „best“ ending would be the Princess while the Queen form feels more like her „true“ Self, where she can express her maturity and I respect that.
3:03 based Gustavo Cerati enjoyer
I can feel the runningshine inspiration, I love it so much
I sometimes forget just how much i love the outro song.
its also rather funny how different the endings turn out based on how much treasure you get.
the princess has different forms. one of which is a rather funny ugly sister look and wario is pretty sickened lmao.
Sometimes when he takes damage he will say yeah like he welcomes danger.
I really like the comparison to Yume Nikki, it actually made a lot of sense once you put it into context
Wario Gameboy games were my favorite ALWAYS! it's also what made me realize that I find obscure weirdly odd & surreal things AWESOME.
Wow just wow i cant wait to watch more of you
Gotta say tho i like the adult cape version of the princess the most somehow hahah
Funny internet man back at it again with another banger ❤️❤️❤️
Wario is the edgy-dreamworks version of Mario.
He is the gaming equivalent of Shrek.
That's both why he's everything Nintendo needs, but the last thing their corporate sensibilities would incline them to actually make. (Not that Dreamworks isn't just as capitalist as Disney; there the analogy breaks down.)
19:55 I’ve been playing pikmin 2 since it came out, and only found out the two different captains have different versions of the same songs
19:12 bro wiped the spaghetti sauce with his hat that he used to wipe the pigeon shit with...
19:13 Wario does double GOMAD and that's just for breakfast!
That why he strong 💪
This is absolutely amazing. This is one of my top 3 games from childhood!
I really love Warioland games, great Video !
Growing up, I was always tad scared seeing these abominations the scrunched screen of my Gameboy SP
Now I savor the both cute and horrifying designs emulating. Shading like Keyser and Rotten's grotesque smile
I love the ice level, its sure complicated but the way you get the disc is just perfect
The princess thing at the end always bothered me too when I played this as a kid. Feels like they should be switched.
lol i came here from the paper mario video, and you made the same AC:NH jokein this video that i did in the comments of that video, before i even saw this, you've deserved the subscribe. your humor is hilarious, you deserve a lot more subs/views
The Golden diva could possibly even be king Poobah's wife as it specifically mentions that she has a big nose, which the Golden divas true face has a big nose.
@12:23 maybe "pretty fun" is a line from that skit I don't remember. But that random shot of stav got me good
I always imagined the voice effects were less diegetic, and more like Wario is commentating on the game.
This is the second i see something bjork related in your channel
I hope you keep it up
Holy fuck I never thought I’d hear a BOARDS OF CANADA REFERENCE in a Wario Land 4 review.
welcome to my twisted mind
@@Lute01 Love it dude. You’re a legend and I’ve been watching your shit through since I couldn’t sleep. A Loveless reference in a Paper Mario review as well? You’re too holy for this earth.
I have never played this game but this video rules.
Childhood favorite right here. Love Wario Land 4 to bits, in fact, I still play it to this day. I even beat S-Hard Mode! I always adored the soundtrack as well, with all of its mix between awesome and bizarre, and many others seem to agree; some composers pay homage to it like in Pizza Tower and the upcoming Antonblast (Great games inspired by Wario Land 4).
Came here after watching your Mother vid, really digging your stuff dude. Will definitely subscribe, looking forward to some more cool vids 👍
4:36 thats more dashdancing but you got the right idea
I think it would have been more interesting if the pyramid itself was one last true escape that you had to make and if time ran out then it goes back to before the Golden Diva fight.
Have you gotten a chance to play Puzza Tower?
I actually got this game on my modded 3ds due to this video, even though I'm trash at platformers. I'm surprised it's this fun!
i played this game all the time as a kid and recently i went back and replayed it. i did end up selling it because i sold a lot of my old games, but i really hope the person who bought it finds enjoyment in that weird experience like i did!
Off topic but I really like your songs on your Spotify!
Garter goes smoothly ((:
my first gba game and what a great video that brought back so many memories! thanks man :')
Just a reminder to everyone to buy this on the Wii U eshop before it shuts down on march 27. The game looks fantastic on the big screen or gamepad
Wario is the best "Mario" character ever made, the Wario land games are underrated and amazingly good, ty for this video
