NEIL! I think most of the time he gained was thanks to the kashima coating on the fork. Maybe 7 minutes. The rest was lost from your helmets aero. Good vid! :)
I love that you guys are incorporating some XC content since I've been considering an XC race for next year along with my enduro schedule. I'd be super curious how pro Master's stack up in these comparison videos. Thanks as always GMBN!
I found Titouan favoring the fork on downhills very interesting. His uphill technique featured something like a "punch", rather than an outright "hop", to tackle the low obstacles. In a full-length race, I'd imagine it becomes very important not to "bonk" since, as Neil points out, the ability to suss the best lines and maintain control goes out the window, making an adready risky sport into an endeavor for instinctual survival. While the big jumps, drops and gnarl are fun to watch, they are beyond my current skill set and equipment. My local trails are generally more suited to the XC discipline and I'd like to see that mindset represented on the GMBN staff of presenters! Thanks for what you do GMBN!!! ;)
That was a great test. I did a cross country race in 2019 and had only been training for two months and I did way better than I expected. Came in 20 out of 22 and did it an hour and nineteen seconds faster than practice time.Definitely being in shape would have increased my chances but I was stoked I even finished. I dig the videos you guys put out, very informative. Have a good one!
Love Titouan’s comment at 6:00 in video as Neil describes his experience chasing. “Oh yeah? OK.” Titouan making it look so easy but Neil, hats off to you. Sweet video. Thanks!
Recently I took my xc bike round dalby forest world cup xc course, 100mm travel hard tail no dropper just like they would have done the course. It really opened my eyes to what the xc riders can do! It's was technical with super steep brutal climbs
I prefer Neil's kit, awkward for Neil having to look down at the bikes with the XC guys kit haha! Totally awesome effort, Neil crushed it! The music for Neil vs XC was hilarious. The XC racers body weight while pedaling was way more forward vs Neil's weight farther back as expected for a dh rider
It is a stunning beauty. I've just researched on the integrated dropper which I find very cool. Sadly it only has a dropping travel of 80mm and the adjustable height of the system lays between 90mm. No wonder it is that light compared to conventional dropper posts.
XC guy has better fitness and got to the downhill section more focused. Also, the xc guy is trained for going down as fast as possible with an xc bike. I assume at this point Neil could it beat the guy on a downhill bike in a course with jumps.
In my area (around Santa Cruz, CA) you can see a lot of local pros at the top of the uphill segments and downhill segments. They rip on the ups and downs.
So true. It can be so hard to keep your skill and technique at a good level when you are super fatigued or redlining. People watch these race crashes and think how could he crash like that, but they just don't know.
Quite a change to the bikes in few years. Stem 40-60mm shorter, 10-12 gears compared to 27-30, dropper seatpost. Love the integrated dropper and those tyres.
Dang! i knew those guys were incredibly fit, but didn't know how fit they actually are! Would be interesting to see e.g. Nino Schurter vs Rémy Absalon vs Brendog (vs Nico Vink vs Scotty) (chose them because all of them have the same bike sponsor, probably easier to make a get-together like this than with people with not one single common sponsor). oh, and my favourite supplement is beer as well! Cheers Neil!🍻🍻🍻
Still my friend it was amazing to see. Just got in to watching the XCO racing this year and am looking forward to seeing a lot more of it next year. To quote Cyrille Presenter vs Pro; very enlightening.
The way pro XC racers climb on their bikes is how casual riders climb on an e-bike Oo It's insane how fast they can climb, looks almost unreal. You need serious powerhouse leg muscles.
I used to ride 36 chainring, but now I am using 34 chainring. I noticed that my time Is more constant for each lap with the 34 . The hills here are Killers
If my maths is right then the times 1st lap vs 2nd lap / GMBN vs pro are pretty good. So Neil’s times show a 105% increase from lap to lap and Titouan’s show a...105% increase lap to lap. You can deduce what you like from those times, but Neil’s fitness is on a par with the younger man, maybe age, course familiarity and biomechanics are more important than biking fitness.
"Apprearance in Lycra: Terrible" 😂😂😂 That took me by storm! I'm imaging myself wearing a Lycra, and... yaiks! Terrible! Lots'a love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines! #KeepBiking
Having the right training, experience, nutrition, commitment, and perseverance can take you a long way! I wonder how many laps Titouan Carod has completed on that track? His lines looked dialed.
'Exactly the same bike' Well, apart from a smaller chainring. Would have been interesting to see if they were identical. Great video. As Richard said, more XC Content would be ace!
Impressive. I don't know much about each sport, but getting ready for a xc/trail event. Just wondering how many times each racer road that course before the showdown? Familiarity is an advantage. I have not room to talk, I weigh in at about 230, so put on a backpack full of beer annnnnd GO!
It would be fun to see xc racers go to down hill with Neil now. Just to see the difference and stuff, I imagine allot of those xc guys would do pretty well
Hard to tell for sure from a few video segments, but it appears that Titouan spent more time out of the saddle pedalling than Neil. Is this true ? If so, do you lock out rear suspension to avoid pedal bob while standing ?
That BMC has a remote lockout feature, so they might lock it out, but it also depends where they're pedalling (if it's in rough sections, it's often better to keep it open). But it wasn't possible to monitor the whole course, as it's pretty big, so we can't say for sure who was out the saddle more often.
Modern XC is cool! The new bikes are getting pretty sweet and the races are getting less boring and roadie friendly. Look at those boulders, step ups and turns.
Noel Castillo Back in the 90s when I was racing in Alaska, it was NOT boring. We raced intense stuff most of the time. Since we didn’t have the equipment to run true downhills and only ran a few hardtail friendly downhills per year, our regular XC races were plenty hardcore. It sounds like XC got kind of staid in the intervening years. I was surprised to learn the World Champs was only 25 miles long; that’s a short sprint! It should be at least 50-60 miles long!
An xc rider myself, love to see xc content, sometimes it is overshadowed by downhill/ enduro etc. Great video!
Great to know, thanks!
Something about that XC, it's rad
@@XCPainter true

MORE XC content plssssssssssss!!

Its the stupid padded shorts haha feela like a diaper xD

Its 2kg

Favorite supplement: Beer. Power to weight ratio: What's that? Neil is the winner no matter what the outcome is with those 2 answers!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NEIL! I think most of the time he gained was thanks to the kashima coating on the fork. Maybe 7 minutes. The rest was lost from your helmets aero. Good vid! :)
FAKTS !
LOL!! Awesome and totally true! ;)
It's a breath of fresh air seeing XC on GMBN, you do it so well. More please, there's always so much support for it. Might even re-subscribe.
Awesome video, good job Neil! This just proved that today's top-level XCO pros are absolutely fantastic all-around riders.
I love that you guys are incorporating some XC content since I've been considering an XC race for next year along with my enduro schedule. I'd be super curious how pro Master's stack up in these comparison videos. Thanks as always GMBN!
Pretty good showing by Neil, especially being 13 years older than Carod! Making us older guys proud!
Would you guys make more video about xc? It would be great!
We'd love to. Watch this space. 😁
Yes please
Please more and how about the old school xc pro's as well
It really would. It is called GMBN after all.
Global Mountain Bike Network you did good imo , he has better endurance so after an hour he still pushing 👍🏾

That's why I like strava. It told me that Jared Graves and Josh Carlson are almost 2 times quicker than me at my down hill bike park.

oh my god, i'm drooling over that double lockout lever
i get so sick of people looking at xc riders as less than enduro or downhill, this video mad me happy.
So well done Neil ! Non pro,family..& full time presenter with over 10 years of age over the young gun.....Respect !!!
Great content and super effort from Neil. Nice to see a different brand of bike featured.
How can you guys upload this video? The BMC fourstroke is so beautiful, I can't sleep anymore.
Great video. Just on Strava you can see how the local pros are super fast on the up/down segments.
More of this please! Awesome bike with a great comparison between the riders!
Cool to see how fast the pros really are. Good work Neil and the team!
That was so awesome. Keep up the xc
Gotta say that is a really nice XC bike...

"That bike is nice!" ... then you look at the price! 🤯
Is Titouan working as a messenger? Cause he has a package to deliver... wtf bro?

The rider spec part 😂 Made me laugh
Ludvig Sahlström beer is my favorite supplement too 😆
Super fun guys!! Thanks for that! Cheers.
Those bikes are pretty nice. Almost looks like a slopestyle bike if you had lower seats and a little rise in the bars/stem.
Would be nice to see some live data like heart rate, speed, peddal freq, gear ratio.
SlySly yes, defintely please do

Great video!!! More xco content here please!!!
Videos are getting better and better! Good job :)
Xc wins downhill against ex pro dh racer?
Thats new
one is young and at the top of his game, plus current generation of XC racers have to contend with pretty tech DH trails as well.
XC guy has better fitness and got to the downhill section more focused. Also, the xc guy is trained for going down as fast as possible with an xc bike. I assume at this point Neil could it beat the guy on a downhill bike in a course with jumps.

When did Titouan pass Neil????
It looks like he overtook Neil at the final downhill section, just before the start/finish of lap 1?
About 3/4s of the way around lap 1
Kudos to the cameraman/men. Running and chasing the riders here and there.
That was very impressive Neil! Giving it your all :)
that black bmc is gorgeous
My favourite supplement is beer too :V

How good are pros? Nose wheelie into rock garden at 3:01. On an XC bike on skinny tires.
Love this channel
Nice video !!!
Thanks! 👍
Global Mountain Bike Network Thanks for your comment :)
Great video! More XC content please, not everyone is into downhill
During the riding part of the video, i was screaming...Go Neil...Go..!!!!
Thanks for making XC look cool 😎👍
RIP Neil
It’s tough to take in these numbers! And amazing at the same time!
Nice breakdown!
I still remember a couple of years back in a local dh race here in chile the guy who won was rideing a 29 hardtail jajajaja
MORE HARDTAIL XC PLSSSS 🔥🔥🔥🔥
More XC content. Now! (I read similar posting, but still hope to get a like from GMBN :) )
kudos to that
Could you guys upload in 4k? even if it's just up-scaled to 4k! UA-cam plays 4k at a higher bitrate making it look smoother.
The way pro XC racers climb on their bikes is how casual riders climb on an e-bike Oo It's insane how fast they can climb, looks almost unreal. You need serious powerhouse leg muscles.
Xc riders are sooo consistent
Wow Neil, I didn't know we have similar rider specs 😀. Seriously though, you rode great man.
Excellent video. The bike is bloody lovely!
Nice info and Nice riding..tq
Takes guts putting it all out there against an xc racer. Nice vid

beer, the best suplement
Cool video. When is the GCN's Si Richardson vs Mathieu Van der Poel cyclocross race?
Will there be a review of that new BMC FS01. Wanna know how it performed. Thkx.
It was a gear doping! We know already that lycra is more aero than baggy shorts. Neal was wearing MTB helmet too :)
Three legs are faster than two
What a great circuit. Xc is tough people especially at competition pace.
If my maths is right then the times 1st lap vs 2nd lap / GMBN vs pro are pretty good.

I have to admit, watching the Red Bull TV XC races makes me want to race XC again after years of being mostly a gravity racer.
It's great to watch! And the courses are becoming so challenging.
Do it now because when you get to my age fighting gravity is just getting out of a chair......
Nice to see XC!
