      What is XCO and XCM

    • @MartinAasa
      @MartinAasa 8 років тому +8

      +Josh Smart XCO is cross-country Olympic and shown in the video, basically a bunch of short laps for circa 1h40min. XCM stand for cross-country marathon and are a minimum of 40km point to point races or point to point stage races. For example the 2015 world championships in XCM course was 87km long with 4500m of climbing.

      @@MartinAasa
      In my day, we did both and they were called XC. There was no differentiation between XCO and XCM. Some races were on circuits with laps while others were point to point. Of course since it was in Alaska, the influence of the Iditabike made it trend towards longer races. The shorter races that would be equivalent to “XCO” were our Tuesday evening race series and the longer races were held on weekends. And some of our races were what would now be considered “gravel” races: such as the 60 mile Chitina to McCarthy race or the two day stage race from Paxson to Cantwell across the center of Alaska (179 miles total). I was disappointed to learn the World Cup races were only 1&1/2 hours long; although I understand it needs to be tv friendly. The “marathon” races should be the norm in my opinion.

    Superb. Some head to heads with current XC WC pros would be fun. I'd love to see some technical info on tire setup, suspension settings etc as well. There's so little info on the tech of World Cup XC bikes available. Interviews with the top 5 male and female riders before the season starts would be massive. Including interviews with their mechanics.

    • @vancel35
      @vancel35 8 років тому +4

      +LedCessna I'd like to see how they'd capture the essence of it in a video. :) It's a combination of knowing the course, knowing how much gas you have in the tank, how much higher you can spike your power, and can you put it all together in an intense enough burst to go around while you're out of the race line. (sand, roots, grass, twigs, trees, etc)

    Just before I start my actual comment I thought I'd say my idea of xc is just out and exploring and not races as yes I'd probably get smashed 😂. I do get why people like dh as it's easy and argueably requires less energy for a long stretch of time. To me though xc is what mountain biking is travelling long distance and going up hill if you want to do a dh segment. I'm all for everyone for their own but I just think having to do the climb before the decent without a lift makes you appreciate the dh part more. Obviously though, I understand why they have lifts at bike parks.
    Side note, you should create a video of going on long journeys exploring trails further away you wouldn't usually ride.
    God that went on... 😂

      I think we are closely aligned on what XC means. I personally look at it as being able to take on long rides up and down through the wilderness, roads, trails, etc. Which is why I enjoy a lightweight bike.

    • @KetzalSterling

      There's almost zero you can really do to your fitness in one week. I'd run some full race pace and above internals on some short trail segments on the Mon/Tue then slightly longer easier efforts on the Thursday. It's really important to ride on trails at full race pace. Try for a KOM on a few local segments. Then stay off the bike Friday. Give legs a solid foam roller session that day. Ride the course Sat and race Sunday.

    I’m enjoying the bike so far ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
