- The Last of Us Part 2 is less than a week away from launch. While embargo restrictions severely limit us and make our usual tech deep dives impossible, we can at least tell you how the PS4 and Pro versions compare, run some performance tests and offer up some initial thoughts about the whole game. NOTE: This video conforms to Sony's review guidelines with regards spoilers and we do not discuss story points.

They touched on it briefly, but the performance of the OG PS4 a 7 year old system to run this as well as it does and as good as it looks is pretty incredible

And I think Naughty Dog will get some amazing graphics out of PS5, without a doubt. If any publisher knows how to push Sony hardware, it is ND. I remember when they released the first Uncharted game for PS3, and how Uncharted 2 came along and blew that out of the water.
I am really excited to see what they get out of PS5, I think Sony in general has got excellent 1st and 3rd party support. I am definitely picking up an PS5 come release.

I was more excited about digital foundry's breakdown of TLOU2 than the actual reviews haha
It was pretty obvious how the reviews were gonna go after the leaks. The predominately right wing critics on youtube were gonna shit on it, which they have started already. While the predominately left wing journalists were gonna love it and give it a high metacritic, which they did with a 96.
Literally the only left wing publication who didn't like it, such as polygon & kotaku didn't even give it a score helping inflate the metacritic.
You won't even be able to trust user scores because right wingers are going to review bomb it with thousands of 0's.

Kage 777 actually Polygon and Kotaku both didn’t have very positive reviews. So I wouldn’t say it’s as easy as you make it seem. And the decisive thing doesn’t seem to be the story or any political views but more that a violent video game about the cycle of violence is a motive that has been used a bit to often in the last ten years. What I gathered from the leaks and from the reviews seems to be that ND doesn’t really know what The Last of Us made special for a lot of people. There seems to be a pretty big disconnect and I have seen people and outlets of both sides say that.

This game also has one of the best respawn systems of all time. It’s basically instantaneous and always puts you in the spot you’re hoping for. They complained about loading when skipping cutscenes, but they failed to mention that if you’re playing it fully through there are ZERO load screens it is all done in real-time cutscenes and a lot of sequences are one single shot that leads right into gameplay

It proves that those prerendered(?) cutscenes are stealth loading screens. I say they’re prerendered because those story scenes have more sophisticated lighting for the character models than regular gameplay does
@@Poever they are all in engine, not prerendered. because they have full control of the camera and events are fully scripted they can push graphic fidelity to the max. as well as making sure the lighting is perfect as you've noticed. whether they are loading screens as well though i have no idea.

No way it’ll be that long. Considering that Part 1 remastered was released one year after the normal ps3 version I feel like part 2 remastered will be released in 2021 or 2022
I mean a new game, not remastered or part 3. That will probably be in 2023. Before that, probably focus on the game for PS5 + the online compoment.
This may be 1440p, but for me, this looked as sharp as the solution Insomniac uses. I'm actually surprised it's not a temporal 4K reconstruction type solution.
I think 1440p in general is what devs should aim for, even with the ps5 and series x. 4k is good for movies and high end pc hardware but I don't think many games could run at 120fps 4k even on the new systems. 1440p is more than adequate and that way they could sqeeze more fluid performance and detail out of the consoles
@@K1LLeRc0ck 120fps will absolutely not be a target by hardly any games this generation. The only place you're seeing it right now is on cross gen games that ran 60fps on last gen, because the developers literally don't need to do anything and it will run 120fps. As soon as developers release games that actually started development on these new machines, you won't see that, and you'll see a heck of a lot less 60fps as well, since a 30fps target allows you to have so much more room on the CPU and GPU per frame. That's not only better graphics, but more complex gameplay, animation, logic, physics, simulation, etc.
@@AndyGilleand I know it isn't a target but it could be. Running games at 4k resolution takes a hefty chunk of the available processing power, if they scrapped that and went for 1440p or even 1800p we should see hardly any games running at 30fps. Of course when devs get familiar with the hardware they develop workarounds to the limitations and in a couple of years we will see a massive leap in both performance and visuals of console games. They are really powerful machines, right up there with the better mid-spec pc's. Animation and lighting are probably what most devs focus on improving and I hope we see a lot more complex simulation this gen. I also think the hardware is finally at the level where they can do proper open world cities with appropriate amount of npc walking around
@@K1LLeRc0ck that's false as it ignores the role of the cpu in game development. If you design a game to use the full 33ms of cpu power, you can never get 60fps or higher no matter how low of a resolution you drop it, because 33ms cpu time means it will never surpass 30fps. That's why developers choose targets, so that they can make full use of the budgets available to them, rather than the PC mindset of "just make it, and see how it runs later". You know you want 4K30, you use the hardware to the full capacity doing that. If you choose 60fps early on, then you limit yourself to half the amount of time on both the cpu and gpu, limiting what you can do significantly. Opening up the possibilities to 120fps even further limits the potential of what you can do with the system. People who think about things like this are comparing these systems to PCs running last gen games, not thinking about what these machines will be able to do when developers actually make full use of the hardware.
@@AndyGilleand While that is correct the cpu and gpu in these systems are powerful enough that a 60fps target at lower resolution is completely feasible. Dropping the resolution down a notch from 4k opens up a lot of room in the GPU for other graphical effects in the same frame-time. That way they can push out more detailed graphics at higher framerates. 4k's impact on performance is massive especially on the gpu side of things. They could also go for the middle ground of a 45-50fps target for cinematic games offering the best of both worlds.

I like John and Alex duo when they unlock their power levels and let themselves be sort of emotional over nice graphics too. Their minecraft multiplay and ghostrunner analysis is so fun to watch. I yet want to see Alex Richard combo.
What I really enjoy about this channel is the way they understand that consoles are different from PC hardware. They're not trashing consoles because they can't do 4k@120fps. They're much more accessible pieces of hardware that will still give you great gaming experiences. And it seems you guys definitely appreciate when you see talent such as naughty dog's team make games like this.

I mean I look frame by frame, and I still see just a colored circle moving around instead of a face, except for when she's actually hit by the face - which is not really impressive since any enemy in any game reacts to damage with pain

Although the PS3 version didn’t run great, the game was so much fun that I hadn’t noticed until I watched the Digital Foundry analysis.
sometime it just doesn’t matter how good it runs. n64/ps1 era games usually just run between 20/30fps. and the games look fine
Combat success wasn't dependent on it, so it was negligible.
To be honest, I find that a lot of the time with games I'm enjoying. It's only really the worst offenders, when it actually gets in the way of the fun, that I have my focus pulled away by it.

i noticed in the HUD that they seem to have removed the “visibility meter” that you can see in the 2019 gameplay demo. i wonder why they removed that, perhaps to force players to refrain from focusing on HUD elements in a game that they want to immerse you in?
Well the first game only had a sound cue when someone saw you and it worked well, glad they went with the old system.
Maybe it was turned off,by the look of it the HUD has a lot of options you can turn on or off.

The way the enemy entered that hallway at 14.30 was very impressive and natural
Years later... Seeing this gives me such a sense of joy for some reason. I had soooo much fun in this game. Such a beautiful game for such weak hardware we had. I gotta replay this on PS5 sometime. Just sensational, this is very likely the pinnacle of graphics and gameplay for the time, truly a masterpiece. Edit: And to be honest I've yet to play such a masterfully crafted game since TLOU2. The polish on the overall game, it just feels good man, amazing even. Naughty Dog's employees are gods at creating video games. Only Rockstar has given it competiton in regards to crafting games, otherwise there's nobody who can match these two. Insomniac Games did pretty good with Spider-man and Ratchet & Clank but still has a lot to prove.
The Ps5 patch is 2160p/60fps it should be a big chance from ps4 1080p/30 and ps4 Pro 1440p/30 .

My hopes for a PS5 upgrade seem to be the reverse of what John and Richard expressed here, which was roughly, "They'll probably up the resolution and maybe framerate, but what I'd like to see is better real time (possibly ray-traced) lighting and shadows."
I hear that and I think the opposite: What I would like to see from a PS5 upgrade is first and foremost, 60fps, and don't change anything else unless and until you get that. Then turn up the resolution or add global illumination to whatever degree you can and still maintain a solid 60fps.
The ideal solution would be the one used in TLOU Definitive Edition on PS4 - put a toggle in the settings to favor framerate or visuals, or, as with the last two Tomb Raider games, framerate, visuals, or resolution.
My fear is that developers will treat this upcoming generation like the current one, and use the increased horsepower for more resolution and slightly improved visuals that you only really see when standing still, sometimes while standing still and zoomed in, and we'll get another generation of games with a 30fps target.
That's what developers strive for. Some of these games dont require 60fps but if they did the graphics and many underlying GPU and CPU usage wouldn't be the same ending in a little worse looking game just to provide better response.

The issue is how to use increased processing power of next gen systems to improve the gameplay experience over how games play this generation. TLOU Definitive Edition PS4 allowed the player to choose between a locked 60fps and improved visuals in the form of resolution and visual effects. This would be the ideal solution, I feel, for games like TLOU2, Spider-Man, Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy on PS5. Give people a choice whenever possible.
You're right, that this would sometimes result it games looking a little worse in one way to provide better look and feel in another. But . . . look at Digital Foundry's own Red Dead Redemption II PC settings video. By turning down graphical settings, you can get a huge improvement to framerate with little to no impact on how the game actually looks. This is what I'd like to see from the next generation - games that look great and feel great to play, and better framerates improves both.
I would love to see Digital Foundry do an analysis of the audio and sound design in this game (and many others if possible), as sound design is going to be just as crucial as the graphics when considering the world building and immersion.
When they showed that new gameplay a few weeks ago I thought it had a MGSV vibe to it as well, but I'm glad to hear that it's still somewhat linear. So excited for Friday!

I find non-linear games so much more boring because they reaplace the linearity with repetitive missions that are even more boring, sure you get to explore more but what's the point when every location seems copy-pasted from many others that it loses all sense of livelyhood, games like TLOU Part II at least feel like a world that's lived in with separate locations, I can't remember the last time a non-linear game caught my attention more than a story-focused game with uniquely built levels.

RDR2 looks fantastic even on consoles, but TLOU2 is near perfect, especially the facial animations. RDR2 is also impressive considering it's open world and on all platforms.

@@waled7rocky Yeah, but what settings is your console running on? Medium and low with high here and there. There is an incredibly high range of hardware that will take advantage of RDR2 once RDNA2 and Ampere comes out.

It's the motion blending at its finest. So many ways all their mo-capped stuff can be made different and altered by the context of the environment. You kind of remember the original as feeling that way to a degree but going back and watching it the difference is night and day.
By what I’ve heard from reviewers the ai is bad unless you put it on a hard difficulty, not tlou1 bad but still not great.

Because they actually understand the technical aspects of the game, and know when to apreciate things. Like in the PS5 reaction video, i think they are some of the few "reactions" that actually understood what they were watching, like John instantly picking up the SSD tech in that Ratchet demo.
@digitalfoundry, can you say whether the fan is loud or not on a PS4 Pro when running this game? the fan is really loud whenever I play Spider-Man on my PS4 Pro, so I'm concerned this game will have that same issue

What's so impressive? Ryse still looks top-tier and runs on a piece of crap X1 at 900p. Graphics from the start of the gen haven't evolved a lot. Killzone SF, Crysis 3, AC:Unity, Infamous SS all look top-tier to this day.

Notice how with every gunshot there is a white screen with an opacity frame that appears to be like if it was screen burned on the first frame after the bullet contact; to mimic the real-life memory flash when you blink your eye.

8:30 The motion Blur on the original version was awful, glad i only played the remaster on PS4.
I’m pretty sure there was an option to turn that off lol, I played through this on the PlayStation 3 and I don’t remember the motion blur being that prevalent. Maybe I’m wrong though lol
Yeah, low FPS + Motion blur = smudgey game. TLOU II looks incredible when standing still, but as soon as you move it's vaseline smear.
Even on remasterd unpatch version the motion blur is awful it creates double image with slight movements... They already fix the motion blur with a patch , to be honest the motion blur is really low quality ...

@@Luca-bv5ic I prefer motion blur on because it looks too choppy with it off. I get that motion blur makes things blurry, but it's really more about frame blending and making it look more like a movie than a video game. Also, every movie ever has motion blur and nobody complains that you can't see fine detail while the camera is moving.
I'm a little late here, but have a resolution question-
I'm playing tlou2 on ps4 pro, on a lg c7 oled. Ps4 pro is set to output 2160p; but the lg reports tlou2 is output at 1080p, and then presumably the lg upscales that to its native 4k.
I know tlou2 renders at 1440p, which I thought the ps4 would upscale to 4k, then send to the TV. But it appears if it is rendering internally at 1440p, the ps4 is down scaling that to 1080p then sending that to the TV. Is this right? Other games output 2160p, so it's not the ps4pro. Why isn't the game/system upscaling the 1440p render to 2160p before outputting? Is it supposed to output 1080p??

Any LG OLED HDR setting recommendations for ingame settings? I hate these HDR slider tabs with no values or greyscale boxes makes it so hard to figure out
They do look identical but notice that some details in the base PS4 are a bit blurry. Objects in the distance like leaves and walls are blurry compared to the PS4 pro version

Not really. 1440p30 and the shading, lighting isn't that impressive. It's the polish, art direction and animation that sets this apart from almost any game ever made

5:24 Rocks beneath the tree look janky, but this is incredibly impressive condsidering the hardware. End of generation games are a real treat when devs have mastered the current system

Yeah uncharted 4 had the same thing where if you look at the game as a whole it looks realistic but if you break it down and look at each individual thing it looks a bit weird, things can look a bit janky

A true mid range PC could run this with more detail and more than twice the FPS.
Consoles are a good deal price for performance when they initially drop but it doesn't take long for that to change.

I don't buy that many games for my PS4 but this is a must have, really looking forward to playing this. Amazing what they can do with such hardware. Great job Naughty Dog and Digital Foundry.

In this day and age of ultra shiny games with popping colors, this looks soooo different! I don't know how the story will play out, but Naughty Dog knows how to set up the atmosphere to just pull you into the game...

True and the range in terms of art direction Naughty Dog is capable of is really impressive considering Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy are still some of the best examples when it comes to a gorgeous game with popping colors.

It's funny how 10/10 reviews get downvoted because of butthurt fans not liking the leaks. Honestly the more I see about the game the more I want to play it. This analysis from Digital Foundry made me even more excited and yes I made the grave mistake of reading comments on Twitter in a post about this game and some asshole spoiled important parts for me but I still want to play the game and now really want to see how you get there.

Wow, they put cloth physics on the short sleeve shirts. That's a classic cloth physics causing the 3d model of the shirt to clip into the 3d model of the body. This is a classic cloth collision resolution limitation due to real-time render resource management, it happens in other games too like a cape or the skirt of a female. They can't use higher cloth collision mesh because it's too heavy to simulate so they probably used a lower resolution cloth collision mesh so it tends to clip in to the other model they're suppose to not "collide" with.

There is also a weird animation glitch towards the end where her gun disappears in the back of her pants and then reappears after she knifes a clicker. Not sure what the time stamp was.

An interesting optimization for ray tracing would be to have a mix of SSR and RT reflections. Like use SSR, and then the parts SSR can't render, use RT to fill it in. Idk how it would be coded but that would save a lot of fps in a lot of spaces.

When you consider how well this game plays on the base PS4, compared to other titles *cough* Cyberpunk, it makes it all the more impressive. It's optimisation at it's best.

Most likely, no. It seems, from the settings menu, only motion blur can be tweaked. But yeah, it'd be nice to have On/Off toggle for FG as well.

I honestly thought uncharted lost legacy looked better.
I think that the colorful look of Horizon, combined with its grand scale in terms of vistas and size of enemies make it seem more impressive. I don't know if it really is though.

Saying HZD looked better technically is just a categorically false statement. HZD has less detail, worse animation, worse acting, worse textures, worse lighting, worse shadows, worse water, worse reflections, worse animation blending. HZD was just colorful, but lacked anywhere near the detail and technical accomplishment of this. Even DF admitted that Death Standing looked better tha HZD and that was running on the HZD engine.

Im happy then, i have a normal ps4 and to see that graphics dont change that much when playing this game is a cool thing.
Avg. load time between 40-80 secs. So PS5 must load this in under a second then.
*This means that the Playing-Time is halved, no 30 Hrs, only 15 Hrs on the new PS5 ;)*
