I can't say it's time for us to quit and remember we didn't have Dylan Harper for this game. It was clear we needed him, and it is the first time he's missed time for us outside of the surgery he had this past summer. Amazing how the fortunes for us changed though ever since Mawot Mag's season-ending injury after that MSG game in 2022-23 season when we beat Michigan State. He hadn't been the same player when he recovered, but imagine without him getting hurt where we would be then. We then lost 8 of our final 11 games (including our first round NIT home game against Hofstra), missed the tournament again last season (with first losing record since 2018-19), and now we're 8-6 having suffered our first loss of the season to Kennesaw State, and once again we're not able to solve Princeton. It's still too early in Big Ten season to decide we're not going to the NCAA Tournament though. Let see what happens if we can keep all our guys healthy and we could've had more of a chance if Dylan was there last night.
By the way Aaron I hope you get well soon. I remember after we beat Seton Hall you was still trying to overcome this. Great to have you once again covering our Rutgers teams either way!
I am definitely one of the roster construction guys. I love getting Acuff involved more and also since the St johns exhibition, it was clear we were gonna have to outscore teams in the 80s or even 90s. Totally with you there- the roster is the roster and it is just deficient in rebounding and defense (no use harping on it). Have to move on from that and find a different way to win- which I think is just scoring in the 80s and 90s.
What is it with 3pt shooters that they forget how to shoot when they get to Rutgers?? Griffiths, Martini, Hayes, Noah Fernandes, Antonio Choi, Jaden Jones...ballyhooed 3pt shooting busts. Only Cam Spencer remembered how to shoot 3s when he got here. Must be the drones zapping the players.
When a team doesn't have a dominant rebounder , it is EVERYONE'S on the floor responsibility, to box and go after that defensive rebound. Outstanding game by Ace but 3 for 8 from the FREE THROW line?? Not a winning team.

Now maybe Zach Martini may have been playing worse than we thought, but we also have to remember all that he went through before he had to leave Princeton and continue his college basketball career here at Rutgers. He suffered a condition while I'm not exactly sure how bad it was, you never know if it could've ended his life early! He is a true leader and regardless how his basketball career ends especially if right after this season at Rutgers, he'll still be going places as long as he's still alive!
Harper is impossible to replace within a 2 day absence on a team with only 2 scorers. Harper also puts the opponent's defense out of position for rebounds (plus the fact that at off guard Harper will rebound more). Harper plays, Rutgers wins. Rutgers needs a 3rd scorer who can shoot the 3 or a dominant big man which they don't have.
The offensive focus is heavily weighted towards Harper and Bailey. That being the case I think it makes it much more difficult for the other offensive players to find their game. Those transfers who came in played full time minutes on their previous teams. Maybe they just aren't suited to come in and be instant offense and seemingly focus on passing the ball to Bailey or Harper while taking the occasional 3.
Coach, please insert Somerville and Acuf in the starting lineup and bring Davis and Hayes as the 1st two off the bench along with Ologbe and Dotch until Martini wakes up and plays some inspired ball. Williams Harper, Bailey, Somerville, and Acuf give you five who can score on there own, more toughness, speed and defense on paper, and the ability to rebound better as a team. Martini and Derack has to contribute off the bench. Acuf needs to play now as the 3rd scoring option. This has to happen now! Ijs
They need to shorten bench. Derkack/ martini / Hayes are not athletic enough for Big10. They can't defend. They can't get in position to box out / rebound or shoot. An example, Nova won multiple National Championship winning 7/8 players. Until dorsch and grant can give some minutes. Also, play somerville at power forward 8-10 minutes a game w aboyle. It will give you size on glass.
Well, it's sink or swim time for Rutgers. We have to beat Wisconsin, Purdue and UCLA or we can forget about it. We could win all three, and we could lose all three. We'll need a 3rd (and 4th) scorer, because we're not stopping anybody. Acuff is our best bet. He's got better shooter's touch than anyone other than Bailey. You can see the quality at his release point. He needs a lot more looks.

I watched the whole game they try playing a zone. They tried playing a zone. They need to work on that zone. They look very uncomfortable. They didn’t know what they was doing. It just goes to show you something’s wrong. You play zone in high school you can’t play a zone in college. You don’t know what position you post to be in the area you post to cover the IQ of some of those players need to be question practice, practice, practice practice on how to play a zone and box out box out put a body on your man put a body on your man put a body on your manyou learn how to box out in grade school. You were in college now come on man come on man.
Besides Ace, I thought Jeremiah Williams played well, with lots of energy. J Mike played about as well as he can. Summerville seems better on offense than defense. Our "3 point specialists" are invisible. Still a lot of potential....gotta keep the faith.

Losing road games more than winning them especially in conference has honestly been something that has existed since our Big East days. This season so far though, we're still undefeated at home. You should've heard Aaron say Pikiell and his staff should've factored in Indiana also missing one of their best players and all of sudden having their best 3-point shooting all season. That's even though I forgot how that performance went on Rutgers side last night and they probably outperformed us there. Of course, I've long felt free throw shooting has been a weakness on a Steve Pikiell Rutgers team. Ace had a great night, but Dylan is a better defender and not just great shooter himself. Honestly we're in trouble if we lose all three and will already be under .500 as well. But it makes a huge difference once Dylan Harper returns as well and hopefully starting with Wisconsin Monday night.
Aaron, we have arguably the two best players in the country. These are two freshman that are superstars. Pike gambled and brought in offensive players who can't rebound and are slow. I had doubts with this team from the very beginning. We the fans were expecting to compete for a Big10 championship. Pike thanks for making us respectable in the conference but now you have to go. We need a much better coaching staff that understands how to bring in the right players from the portal. We're not going to outscore the teams in this conference. I feel so bad for Ace and Dylan that they could have went anywhere but they chose us, and they have to deal with the players on this team. Ogbole and Martini are getting killed all season in the paint. They look lost out there. Derkak and JMIC play good defense but can't shoot, and Acuf was never a good shooter he was brought in to score by slashing to the rim. Can't play defense. PJ should be playing more his defense is not good, but either is anyone else's. Pike has to go!!!!!
