  • This video compares ballistic results from shooting 10% gelatin, wetpack and 20% gelatin. You will find conversions between penetration depths obtained in wetpack so that you can convert those results to 10% gelatin penetration depths.
    Tested were:
    9x19mm Hornady 124gr XTP
    223 Rem Federal 55gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw JSP
    Thank you for your support.

    Im going to give away my technic for fast wet pack. Several phone books. stand them up in a large trash bag. pour a thin line of liquid dish detergent on top of the book pages. turn on the tap over the phone books. They will be saturated in moments instead of days.

    I know it would be harder than hell to do, but I'd love to see what the .950 JDJ would do to however much gel you found amusing. There aren't any videos of it hitting ballistics gel (not surprising considering the $40 per round price tag) and it would be nice to see it with the quality your videos bring.

    Informative video, but you need to invert those correction multipliers at the end (e.g. you should multiply 9mm wetpack expansion by 1.01 not 0.99 to equal 10% gel)

    I'd like to see you shoot an engine block, there are several myths about what caliber can penetrate one. I did see a 454 penetrate one back in the 80's.

    Can you use some non stick spray or grease to coat the inside of the mold? I know the gel is hot when poured in (which would probably just melt the grease and make it float), but maybe one could wait until the liquid gel is somewhat cooler, yet not setting yet?

    I think I asked for the 20% conversion to 10% gelatin about a month ago. Thanks for getting to that. The wet pack comparison was a bonus. I know these are more of a rule of thumb than absolute figures, but it is a good yardstick to compare tests. Thanks again.
    At this point, I was thinking three plastic milk jugs is about equal to the FBI standard of 12" of penetration - if it exits the third. It is not accurate, but it is a pass/fail for further testing, I suspect. What do you think?

    • @infogunvault6920
      @infogunvault6920 Рік тому

      From all the research of bullets shot in water vs ballistics gel I've done, I find that one 1 gallon plastic milk jug equals about 4 inches of ballistics gel. It works for expanding handgun bullets, buckshot, shotgun sabots, shotgun slugs etc...
      So your three jug minimum would definitely work.

    Hi! Great stuff. I know I have the mental capacity to grasp gel Results, but it hasnt clicked yet. So gelatin represents affects of shooting flesh? (14"=14 inches of flesh?) Please clarify for me thanks.
    On another note, have you tried a 'resist' to remove gelatin from a mold (Pam spray or Vaseline before pouring)

      Professional 10% calibrated ballistic gelatin represents human muscle tissue (technically pig). The common misnomer is that it represents the human body, and so people will often say, "my heart isn't 18" into my body." The body is made up of skin, organs, bone, muscle tissue, etc. Skin, unlike muscle tissue, actually has a very high resistance. This is the reason that the FBI recommends a minimum of 12" of penetration, but no more than 18" of penetration to effectively hit the vital organs of an attacker. Ideally, you want your bullet to hit the spinal column to cause true involuntary incapacitation (IE: The brain can no longer tell the limbs to work.). There are documented incidents in which an attacker was still up and fighting on to two minutes after having their heart and lungs shredded. (Here's one example: www.policeone.com/patrol-issues/articles/6199620-Why-one-cop-carries-145-rounds-of-ammo-on-the-job/)
      If someone is shot in the torso, the bullet is going to encounter the skin, the sternum bone structure, etc. Now if the attacker also has their arms up or extended towards you, the bullet may be traveling through the hand/wrist/arm. That is how and why those standards were developed (at least a very abbreviated version). A lot of this testing came from the aftermath of the 1986 FBI Miami shooting. Hope this helps!
