How to Fix Peeling Buttons for CHEAP!

- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- We show you how we fixed the peeling buttons on our Touareg Project. We purchased some button decals for our Touareg and wanted to show you the complete process of installing them. This required using goof off and a variety of tools to remove all the peeling soft touch.
We then cleaned the striped buttons and painted some black on some of them. After these buttons dried, we installed the button stickers on the vehicle.
Check out more on our project Touareg!

When you spray painted the window switches didn't that block off the illumination?
thought the same thing
it did. We would advise taping off the center where the logos are on the stickers
@@Deutscheautoparts Thank you!
Yeah lol
My thought exactly
DAP dude, you r the Bomb !! I am getting a 04 V8 Touareg this Saturday...... How convenient to find this now. Thx !! I love your series. VW's are awesome cars, we need to keep em alive. I love the R32's, Phaetons, Touareg's. So unique so bad ass.
Under loved for sure
yup. bought the sticker set... about... 8 months ago...
pretty much figured it would literally be painful to the heart, mind, and soul to do what you filmed (you said it perfectly at the end. lol). Thanks for the pain for all of us.
Excellent video, thanks for making it. I just purchased a 07 VW Touareg and tackling the same issues. I got the sticker stick but now need to start dismantling the AC unit and other bit. I used acetone as a test to strip the blank buttons on the rear air vent and it worked out perfectly then used some Rustoleum paint and primer to finish it off. 🇿🇦
I used Isopropyl Alcohol, blue Non-Scratch Scotch Brite Pads and microfiber rags to successfully remove all of the soft-touch from the interior plastic parts of my MK4 wagon. The Non-Scratch (teflon safe) pads do not scratch the plastic beneath the soft-touch whereas the green pads will. The black plastic looks new and feels so much better, after deleting the soft-touch.
I will try this along with his method of stripping off previous decals
FYI. That sharpie will come off with time. Ask me how I know. I purchased the the Paint Sharpie. Hasn’t rubbed off.
Very appealing video...Similar events on my mk4 gti...with the pieces out, I hit the black plastic (around radio/hvac) with wet 320,400, 600,and finally plastic polish (novus #2) for a virtually scratch free finish. Gloss black might not have been the best, but it looked better than gummy, nicked soft touch.
Here's a tip for the soft touch peeling and removal. Use a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol and seal the trim and cloth in a zip lock bag. This will raise the soft touch off like air craft stripper on steel. No scrapes no scratches and easy rub off the soft touch coating. Keep in mind you would have better results by removing the circuit boards and soaking the trim pieces. Then you can refinish as needed.
Great tip. Thanks
easyer to buy button and switches kit on ebay,
saves money and time.
and you have it perfectly
You needed to show a night view of the switches with the lights on.
Let's better not talk about how the LEDs will shine through everything
@@TheGenuineRannix... Ok, no talk, just show us and let us determine the results for ourselves. If it sucks, so be it.
Temove the peeling paint from the black trims with ONLY wet wipes (with alcohol) and a lot of rubbing patience! Result is no scratches and the plastic beneath will look nice and smooth, from personal experience.
Thanks for making the video even though you hated doing it. It was a good educational video.
Just FYI if you want to repaint anything RustOleum chalkboard has a great matte black textured finish for trim. Matched my BMW's light black just perfect and would probably match this as well.
I made it 5 minutes and said "yeah F that."
That’s how I felt before I started 😜
Lol
scirockalot8v ordered a kit like this for the merc. After installing a few , I said the same thing. FS.
Me too this is a bunch of bs
I personally wouldn’t mind something like this. But how exactly to remove the window switches, suspension and diff, and hazard / seat warmer switches??
I'm glad you did that work because I've always figured it would be too labor intensive and you proved that. What do think of the design of those switches to be repaired or replaced? Was VW easier or more difficult than other cars? What was the most irksome thing about the upgrade (I'm thinking the white background) and what would you tell VW?
I got this exact problem and all the others with your 04 Toureg (minus the head and transfer case so far). I also got mine for $1200 at auction.
Thanks for the work! You got a new subscriber out of me.
You did a really good job. Can you do mine in your free time? LOL! Thank for taking your time to show this, it does look 1,000,000 times better.
Your patience knows no bounds my friend. Painful to watch you struggle with the cosmetics. I will never do it! You now also cured me of any thoughts in that direction, but it was worth the watch. Picked up a few ideas from you, thank you very much.
replacement buttons and parts are not that expensive. Especially the mirror switches are common replaced by more durable parts on Aliexpress. You may even give it an upgrade by adding buttons with chrome edges. I've had a Audi A6 (2006) with sticky buttons. Replaced them all with new, chromed parts. Just set me back about 25 dollar. Much easier and much better results.
How did you remove the window switches, especially the drivers window switch? They are stubborn and I'm afraid they will snap.
I have a question 🙋🏻♀️ I live in phx AZ and it’s extremely hot here will the stickers hold up in this extreme heat?
I really appreciated your video and be so detail every step, this takes a lot time and show how precise you do your work with all your shop projects, thank you for sharing.
Wow amazing Job you saved me so much money bro
Where did you find the side mirror switch? Mine is broken off too, but for the life of me I can not find just the knob piece.
How do you get those center armrest vents out? Mine won't blow air and I want to look down and see if anything is blocking them
Please tell me how to fix that silver murder plastic that's breaking apart around the shifter in my MKVII GTI next.
Josh Rucks contact your local dealer. It’s a known issue and a lot of dealers are replacing them under warranty.
@@NikPreusser I'm about a year out of the 3/36k warranty
Josh Rucks might be worth reaching out to VW, wouldn’t hurt. If they won’t do it, another option is pulling that shifter trim out, sanding off the peeling knives, and prep/painting that plastic.
If they don’t cover it we can get you a new oem trim.
Where can we find to buy online the window buttons stickers for Seat Leon 1P 2006? Thank you..
Looks great now you almost have the entire project complete!
Rubbing alcohol takes the soft touch off easy, goof off hardly works
Never tried rubbing alcohol but goof off worked great. It’s possible you were using a different goof off product
Its not "easy".
@@krane15 no it's shitty no matter how you do it just got through the process on my mk4 gti.vw junk
That's pretty much what all soft touch plastic will look like in 10 years, at least hard plastics will only crack or discolour which is easier to fix.
Do a video about repairing the paint on the wheel!
I'm coming to your shop right now.
I can't really find button stickers for the steering wheel for an Audi TT but I guess blacking them out wouldn't be too bad
The easiest fix would be for VW to do the right thing by taking responsability to replace all the buttons for its customers.
An easy way to consistently remove soft touch coating is to put the part in red hot water with a dishwasher tab or some strong car shampoo. Leave to soak, maybe top up with more hot water then scrub them with a nail brush or similar. Stubborn bits left after an initial scrub will come off after being soaked in the hot water again.
Did VW fix these issues of button wear in later models ??
Yeah, the engines brake before buttons start to peel off.
Hard work. Thanks 4 posting
So realistically who can I take it too if I wanna work on this
you could also try a paint marker instead of a sharpie
Im lucky. My 09 gti still looks fantastic. Inside. Nothing exactly peeling. Feels only 2-3 years old. Just few small shinyness in few spots from oils off hands over time. But really noticeable.
Excellent, tx from france👍
Hey, I like VW, but c'mon--my 62k mile mk5 has trashed switchgear, while my 156k mile Murano looks mint inside. Who decided "soft feel" was essential?
... It's all about initial impression in the showroom/test drive. Get through the first 3 yrs and then hope the consumer trades/buys your newer offerings due to age, warranty, the feeling of having new again. It IS NOT a long-term/longevity decision.
Excellent. Really useful.
I wish a bluetooth radio was that easy for an 04 with cd nav
Do they still light up though the stickers? Not sure if you mentioned that.
Yes
Some of the switches might be better to just replace, like the headlight switch.
Thumbs up for the effort.
I have a 2007 Golf TDI and think that Armour All, the silicon-based -"protectorant" softens the paint on VW switches and radio buttons, exacerbating this sort of deterioration.
Has anyone else noticed this happening?
Where did you get the music which occurs at 5:07?
You shouldn't spray paint the complete switches or the illumination will not show through. I placed a small label that was large enough on the switch (round), spray painted the switch, removed the label (round) and placed the new sticker on top. Mine looks perfect. I also completely remove the switch from the housing in the beginning. I did this 3 years ago and they look brand new. Much better than factory and no pealing.
What type of paint did you use?
@@kirkswenson7566 Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter and Duplicolor Trim Paint. GL. Make sure you strip the old paint away and sand them a bit.
What a terrible design to use white plastic, and coat it in black. Did VW eventually stop using this? I have a Mk6 GTI, will it get like this?
Probably made sense to have the led lighting come through...
Clean any area that comes in contact with your skin frequently with a microfiber cloth and plain water. Say twice a week. The buttons, shifter, steering wheel, any handle etc.
Do not use products! Clean with plain water
Also protect interior from the sun and heat
Yes every vw and Audi will get like this they're crap
I purchased them of ebay uk . Still waiting on my delivery 😒
Recommend using paint pens.
Thank you
what is the mileage of the car?
Stickers always look shite, no matter how You do it. It may be OK from the distance, but once You take a closer look it's very cheap solution.
Has anyone had issues taking off the headlight switch- mine won’t come off - done all the advice from UA-cam videos - seems stuck ?
stick with it , once youve done it once , almost by accident , have a play with the switch out , and you will see how it works
by the time you need to do it again , you will have forgotten again though.
Why Volkswagens have peeling buttons. I just bought a Jetta and it has peeling buttons. I have never seen that on a car before
the windows switches look ok. The dash looks like crap.
Shit, I'd buy another car before I even attempted this colossal waste of time. Especially for a VW.
omg! they has to use white plastic in the interior because they used up all the black plastic in the engine compartment.
I have a 2014 Nissan Rogue and cannot find a sticker sheet to save my life
And for the love of God don't use a exacto knife, or scotch Brite pad. I don't know why this guy is giving terrible info out
So what are you supposed to use?
@@rivmchl alcohol and a microfiber takes it off easy
Personally waiting for sensible wireless Android auto headunits and phones that support it...
1- You’d think car makers would know what works and what doesn’t.
2- I’d just buy a new car.
I hate how the stickers aren’t the correct font
The design team at VW Touareg was sleeping at the job when suppliers sold them these parts.. White base plastic seriously ??
Adam King funny comment, but the reason they use white is so the light shines through.
Yeah it gets ugly. I guess making it out of different colored plastic is too costly compared to painting it.
Adam King not just VW. Mercedes have the same problem.
Man, I understand normal wear and tear, but these interior pieces were seriously abused.
Pretty much all old Touaregs look like this.
Much easier to just find a replacement radio with all the text in good shape. The hell with all this nonsense
Vw quality.
Peeling peeling
dang, what a nightmare
buy a new stereo, $30 stickers eff that and it still looks like sh*t
So a 100000euro Volkswagen is badly made? NOOOOOOOOO
This really doesn't look good....
it looks like crap
Awful
it is so ugly and cheapy
looks like shit ..lol
bulshit
That's a lot of work for something that still looks like sh*t
