I had the exact same problem, I changed the transfer case sourced from a salvaged 2007 with low mileage. It fixed the problem. I love my touareg like a toxic relationship. I took me about eight hours total to change it out in the driveway. I dropped the exhaust, front and rear driveshaft, removed the crossmember and then the transfer case. Most of the labor I did on my own and a little help from my brother to press on the brake and align the transfer case during install. A local shop wanted $3000 for labor and part. I paid $250 for the transfer case and 8 hours of my time. No coding required.
I’m now a retired Audi/VW tech(47 years) and in 2004 I did all the Audi A8’s and my buddy beside me did all the Touareg’s ,he was on 24/7 suicide watch
@@jgizzy You would have to have great mechanical working skills and good quality tools and extensive electrical knowledge.A very good scan tool that can do coding as well example “obd eleven pro “. I can fix them but would not own one
@@jgizzy Meaning, if you own one of these beasts and don't have the $$$ to throw at repairs, you better get comfortable with a wrench. And metric at that! :)
Thought REAL hard about buying one (with center and rear lockers) but ended up buying a '06 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland instead. These seem like the perfect on/off roader, except for the repair bills!
We bought first year, and had for 14 years with minimal maintenance (except the first year where it had lots of failures under warranty) Ours was VR6 and it was plenty fast enough for its purpose.
I have an v8 05. I like it a lot and it’s fun to drive but it’s definitely a money pit. I’m looking at maybe putting a turbo on it if I can find one. If it’s not going to be reliable or get good gas mileage, I might as well have fun with it 😀. The goal is to get over 500hp
i have a 06 v6 3.2 full air suspension touareg , i did the the prop shaft bearing last year , its all good now , in the snow one time i had some clicking like that but not as loud , i thought i engaged the dif lock wrong then it went away , i was only at 5 to 10 mph when it did it , ive never heard it since, after that later after winter i did all new dif oil and transfer case at about 150 k , i did front wheel bearings same time also ,left and right was totally done really worn , its been great since , next is the transmission fluid and filter , i dont mind the 3.2 v6 its pretty quick when she wants to be , always starts and i love the sound when its in a good mood , great vlog , my transfer case fluid was pretty dirty. glad i got it out of there !!!!
YES! Water leak video please!!! I just pulled the entire carpet out of my T1 hoping to find the source of a leak. Cleaned the sunroof drain out and the firewall from loads of debris, and even used a seam sealer. Thought it would fix the issue but after heavy rain last night the passenger foot-well is still leaking water from somewhere. So yes, a video would be very helpful.
Hi Paul, Thanks a lot for you very informative videos. I would like to request if you would put up a video on the Toureg timing chain and cylinder head replacement. Thanks
Yes please for a water leak video. I have a mk5 GTI that has a part ready to go into it to hopefully stop the damp in the boot/trunk. (shout out to the trunk air flap replacement crew)
I’m so glad the dealer wouldn’t budge on the deal I tried to make on a used Touareg 2. Instead I bought a brand new Touareg 3 in 2015, and this generation is so much better in interior quality and reliability.
This series has been enjoyable so thanks doing it. I've been looking for a Touareg project and there is an 04 V8 near me with 180K on the clock with supposedly bad valve body solenoids but runs smooth. No history on the timing components though. The price is $1500...decisions decisions
Literally I was replaying the video over and over at the beginning when you was diagnosed the sound and i guess it correctly... I said it sound like the transfer case
Hurry up and finish fixing this Touareg so I can come down from Raleigh and buy it! Been looking for one for a while and would be nice to buy one from someone I trust!
I had a shadow blue 06 v8 with air and twin lockers. Ran well but sold it for cheap as ppl ran away with the high kms. Bought a base 2010 tdi with the sport appearance package and its been flawless so far. It takes 35% less gas and it just seems cheaper to own than the older v8. Cool cars but I would not own one if i did nt need to tow with it. We considered keeping both and getting rid of our 05 passat tdi. I'm glad i kept the Passat.
My transfer case was working fine in high gear wanted to test the low range functionality; now stuck in low reduction... New Reduction motor did not fix. Service bulletins spells out motor and control module replacement. Can you manually move the step up motor; shaft outside case to move into High gear? Mine has a spring like feel and will return to same position. Any help would be appreciated.
Water leak video would be great. A little off topic but I’m about to do the valve cover gasket/spark plug well/ cam bearing gasket on my 1.8t AWM, is clear RTV silicone all I will need? Or will I have to use a different silicone for the back part by the half moon rubber part?
Would be nice to see the damage causing the noise in the transfert case (maybe not a complete disassembly but just a short clip) A water leak diagnosis video would be helpful, cuz you just never know...
Well you are the Deutsche Auto Parts and this car is a PROJECT :)))) So it will take some time until you fix things on it but I hear after a while you iron the kinks out and it runs good for a few 100,000 miles.
We Have 2005 VW TOUAREG And We Put A New Batter In And It Still Don't Want To Star Some Times So Not Sure What Is Going On With It Please Let Us Know Whats Going On With It Thank You
i own a 2005 v8 Touareg that I got with 136k miles with a bad driveshaft. replaced it and it now has 150k miles and the only other thing I've replaced on it was the transfer case motor. and a cpl oil changes. It has been a very reliable vehicle, I also own a 2008 Touareg with the vr6. The 2008 has 178k miles....and that one I had to replace the sunroof due to a broken tab that caused the glass to pop up from the front side of the glass. so far I am very happy with both... The 2005 v8 I got for $1,200.00 in 2019, and the 2008 I paid $7k in 2017
Haha as soon as you launched it I figured it was the transfer case chain skipping. Are the internals not serviceable on that unit? Or is it just more cost effective to drop another one in?
I’m on my 3rd Touareg now. 2004 V8 , 2009 TDI V6, 2013 TDI V6. Love all of them. All with Air Suspension. (Non negotiable to me)Miss V8 the most, but not the fuel consumption! Never any mechanical issues though. Only problem I have... what do you replace a Touareg with other than another? Sadly the newer versions have gone “soft” Desperately looking for V8 Tdi, Air + low range. But they are basically Rocking Horse $hit.
Can you elaborate a little more about the low speed, tight turning noises from the transfer case please. My same model Touareg does this when manoeuvring in tight car parks! What is the solution for this?
Wow that sounded pretty knarly , I'd have to imagine there's quite a bit of choochage goin on inside that transfer case. Probably kind of like a vr6 timing chain set ... Yea they suck for that, but it's amazing they still run with a bunch of busted guides🤣
Thank you for the update! I bought 06 3.2L recently and the shop recommended me to change/ replace spark plugs, transmission fluid, break flush. any of these video would help alot.
Even before these vids I have weirdly wanted a Touareg for a while now even though I am not a fan of SUV's. Seeing them in my feed doesn't help diffuse my desire 😂!
Hi there, thank you for the posts on the Toureg. I think you should mount a video cam under the car and take it for a drive to see if you can't trace the source of the noise.
I didn't end up watching the whole video, but based off of the noise it sounds like the driveshaft bearing (I don't know what it's actually called, but it's a very common failure and fix).
I had the exact same problem, I changed the transfer case sourced from a salvaged 2007 with low mileage. It fixed the problem.

Can you take apart the transfer case jus to see the damage in there in the next video?
I was thinking the same , see what's causing the noise.
Bump
Yeahh
I'm in. Any new info?
Take it apart, maybe it can be fixed?
I’m now a retired Audi/VW tech(47 years) and in 2004 I did all the Audi A8’s and my buddy beside me did all the Touareg’s ,he was on 24/7 suicide watch
After working on them, would you ever recommend any type of A8 or S8 for somebody mechanically inclined?
@@jgizzy You would have to have great mechanical working skills and good quality tools and extensive electrical knowledge.A very good scan tool that can do coding as well example “obd eleven pro “. I can fix them but would not own one
Haha, hilarious. I've become a mechanic since owning a T1 and that's not even remotely close to my actual profession.
@@ajnanyc ??? what's not even close to your profession? confused as to what you're trying to say
@@jgizzy Meaning, if you own one of these beasts and don't have the $$$ to throw at repairs, you better get comfortable with a wrench. And metric at that! :)
Yes! Do a water leak video! I got one somewhere on my v dub beetle. Invisible but I gotta put coolant in every couple of weeks.
grumerguy He did not say a coolant leak, he said water leak!
@@nissanneal
Okay. I get it. A water leak. Water leaking into the car, not water leaking from tha car.
YES PLEASE!!!!!!!

The Touareg is a big hit in the TFL channel. I’d like to see more videos.

Have you tried to turbo your v8? Mine is same vintage.
Thx boddy for the video,
just for a record, Touareg is a Berber population of Sahara north Africa !

Definitely interested in the water leak video and it would be cool if y'all would split the transfer case and show what failed.
Still here for the ride coming all the way from South Korea.

Moneypit Touraeg should be the new series title....lol enjoying following this series..keep up the good work be well.
Was apart of the center support flock lol. Swore it was that. Had to replace the drive train on my Touareg. Good as new!
Hurry up and finish fixing this Touareg so I can come down from Raleigh and buy it! Been looking for one for a while and would be nice to buy one from someone I trust!
Having raced RC cars, I immediately recognized that sound! (But with RC cars, it is waaayyy cheaper to fix!)
The chain in the transfer case is at fault, it has stretched and or teeth missing on the gears
That is the correct answer. I think Cobra Transmission sells the chain and kit.
I have a good feeling about the new t c. Looking forward to your next vid to see it run.
I definitely would love to see a diy diagnosis on a water leak!
Now nice video. I am enjoying watching this story unfold I would say this truck is in ok condition for 200.000 miles.
