LVMH Acquires Kapital!? What it ACTUALLY Means -
LVMH’s private equity arm, L Catterton, has quietly taken a majority stake in Japanese cult favorite KAPITAL. This move has sent shockwaves through Japanese fashion forums and fans who see it as yet another sacred brand being absorbed by big industry players. But is that really the case?
In this episode of The State, I dive into what this acquisition means for KAPITAL, Japanese fashion, and the broader implications of LVMH’s growing foothold in Japan. Could this lead to exciting collaborations, or is this just another example of cultural commodification? Let’s break it all down.
Stay tuned for an in-depth analysis, and don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more insights into the fashion industry and its evolving culture!

Simple: they're lowering the quality as much as they can get away with, and raising the prices as much as people can stomach. It's what they do with everything else. Get ready for poly-cotton pieces for $2000.

I think with a majority stake instead of an outright buyout, it mostly means Kapital will be able to operate, as is, for the foreseeable future.
However, I will make a point to grab me some century denim asap before quality and price change for the worse.
Not really, with a 51% stake in any company you essentially control it
LVMH might have realized they need to gain more foothold in the 20-40 year old market and have figured out a business deal that will work for brands with alot of influence like kapital and our legacy. Giving them full autonomy might just be a crucial part of the deal for it to go through.

I really love the “whimsy” of Kapital, a quality that sets it apart from larger, more commercialized brands. My experience collecting menko tokens from nearly every Kapital store in Japan highlights this unique spirit. With the help of friends, I completed the set and redeemed them at the Kyoto location last year. The staff hand-stamped each token, mailed them back to my Japanese address, and awarded me a Kapital-branded teddy bear. Their loyalty program, featuring hand-stamped cards and handwritten customer IDs in a ledger, reflects the intimate, artisanal ethos that Kapital embodies. As LVMH steps in, I hope these endearing practices and the brand’s authenticity remain intact.

NOOOOOO LALALA CANT HEAR YOU
LVMH snatched up Kapital, and Y Project closed their doors 😢😢😢
The economy is that bad in Japan now. This is beyond fashion a lot of brands are closing up or being bought out.
I was waiting for you to talk about this lol
LMVH is notorious for ruining brands they buy. Worse quality, higher prices. So the precedent is not promising. And majority stake is pretty much buying it.
They may be the case BUT things economically are tough in Japan now. Considering the situation Kapital being picked up by LVMH is likely a case of “damned if you don’t”. Regardless of its cult status Kapital is still a relatively small brand, and it isn’t being bought by a mainstream audience. Which is its own brand of good but in the current climate could spell trouble for the future.
It’s over guys.
Hate it, culture, tradition and history are hard to build...all that tossed away for some euro blood money
Thank you! NYC here.
Kapital is overly mention in the western. It’s not a bad thing but other Japan labels have tons to offer as well!
talk about it - it's really more of an expansion play for heritage
edit: if KAPITAL were to get a new CD who would you like it to be ?
3:41 That Part!!
What’s the best way to buy some Kapital pieces, if you live out west and don’t want to pay their crazy markup?
Also, is Kapital available in other Asian countries, such as Thailand or the Philippines , at the more regular Japanese prices?
Glad i got some century denim (jeans and jacket) while visiting Japan last year November. Brace yourself for the even higher price and drop in quality. I hope i’m wrong. 😢
Ahh the death of Japanese fashion is finally upon us
Hardly. Japanese fashion has pretty steady for years. There’s still great stuff but most of it is very similar and legacy based. Kapital by comparison is really small drop in a very big pond.
@@THECASUALco I was using hyperbole, if anything, the main silver lining in this is that you will have more people interested in a wider variety of brands
Which in the end, will only serve to remind people that Japanese Fashion is more than just Undercover, CDG and Kapital
@@Megaman.ExE7well you already got the gist. Well said.
Thank you so much for this amazing video! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (mistake turkey blossom warfare blade until bachelor fall squeeze today flee guitar). How can I transfer them to Binance?
Why didn’t comme snatched up y project 😢
Been waiting for the Reggie's take on this.
L Catterton is mostly independent from LVMH these days
We're reaching levels of over previously thought unattainable.
The end of craftsmanship...
Like all businesses there are times they struggle and if Kapital can have more cash on hand with economic set backs from sales etc. it can be a softer blow than a big one. As for corporate daddy LVMH they can expand more into Japan which idk how they’ll do. As for quality and tings i think it’s waaaaaayyy too early to tell. You make a great point why didn’t CDG didn’t extend a hand?? Don’t jump to assumptions and see it play out.
Kapital need capital
…. Cautious with a side eye
it means all of kapitals upcoming denim will come from china cos lvmh stingy as hell
