    I agree 3 months isn't enough in 2024. My wife has lost her job. She will be working another 2 months until she finishes up. Just prior to finding out this news we had finally saved up our 3 month emergency fund for the first time in our lives and we're 45 and 49. We have 2 kids in private school and live in very expensive New Zealand. Going to use these last two months of income to add another chunk to our emergency fund. Not at all feeling confident that she will get a job quickly. We are lucky to own our home and have a small mortgage (by New Zealand standards). Great video, thanks for spreading the advice that everyone needs to prioritise their emergency fund. We are older and have never experienced a job market like this, scary times

    Thanks for breaking this down. Your set up shows how fortunate you are and how others may be in a very different scenario ex. if you couldn't have moved to a very low rent family home, if you didn't have a ginormous salary and severance pay (compared to US average), or weren't diligently saving so much before being laid off.

      exactly! it’s all relative and it’s something I keep in mind anytime I view other people’s content - it helps me not compare.

    i think the only stable jobs are now government jobs. I have worked for the fire department for 19 years and i never been worried about getting laid off once

    That's for breaking all that down like that! very interesting. I think the biggest factor is you have the in law basement to go to and you did do that, even BEFORE you were laid off. Do you pay anything to live there? What a huge blessing. Beyond that, yes, your large salary and very cautious choices to save large funds for this are the difference. I'd be curious to know what you think you'd have done if instead you were living on credit cards by, say , march, and didn't have such low expenses? I'm guessing maybe you'd have had to take a much lower paying job not in the field you want

    • @FirstGenMoney
      @FirstGenMoney  2 місяці тому

      SUCH A BLESSING! Yes we do pay a small "rent" ($300). I definitely would've reduced our expenses in anything non-essential -- like eating out, saying yes to travel, and gifts for birthdays/holidays -- and picked up a more permanent part-time job. But yes would've have continued applying to full-time jobs in my field and outside my field.

    What are you actually spending annualized on groceries and housing costs, please.
    I find property taxes utilities groceries yearly per person is under 8k yearly for most people with similar roommates

    These things none preps you for, when things happen unnoticed or you have so many mishaps/unfortunates. After I did leave Amazon i leaned onto my 401k to help me in an intown suite where I was. Decreasing the spending and expenses. Eating tuna, noodles, eating less was a lesson. I pray you get unemployment benefits or food stamps to help you. I hate this did happen. Have you revised-revamped your resume? Do network differently!

    • @FirstGenMoney
      @FirstGenMoney  2 місяці тому +1

      exactly -- you really never know when this can happen and it can happen to ANYONE! no one is immune to lay offs. I did receive unemployment benefits thankfully!! I have since revised my resume and updated my LinkedIn to make myself more searchable for recruiters!

    Girl, you are never gonna find a job in this market. It is insane, and you certainly will never find one for 148,000. The tech bubble has totally burst and now that everybody wants to work from home you’re competing against the entire world.

      I have been interviewing for jobs in this range and higher, BUT also definitely seen the drop in ranges. SO not quite impossible -- certainly times have changed though. I'm considering making a separate video on the changes I've noticed interviewing this time around.
