    Awesome in depth review. I got the profoto a10 to replace my godox ad100 for my aquarium photography. The a10 was great for people photo but for my aquarium photos it kept under exposing and the ad100 was spot on. I ended up selling the profoto a10 and getting back the ad100 and will add a v1 for taking indoor people photos. Can't wait to watch your update video

    Thanks for the video Luke! I bought one of these on black Friday, haven't really practiced with it much but I do agree with your thoughts. One think I like, with the SB-900, I need to press the button on the side of the head to adjust the angle. It’s annoying. The V1 was clearly made to be pointed in various directions with ease.
    Time to practice! Thanks for the inspiration

    Thanx for the review. I've used up multiple Yongnuo's over the years, and it's time to freshen up. Godox looks like a great system.

    I have 2 V1s for field work. They are a good choice. They also make a really useful neoprene dome. There are a couple of sizes. I use the ML-CD15 Diffusion Dome for outdoor fill in flash. It is a bit bigger (about 5”) than I would like but the results are excellent if you need a diffuser. The are easy to squish up to fit in a bag if you need to.
    The radio controller works well once you find the little details out from the skimpy manual. Moving to the studio is easy with the controller as well.

      Oh that’s great to hear! Interesting, I’ll have to check them out.
      Yeah! They don’t really say anything about it, so I had to kind of figure it out. But I’m looking forward to using the radio controller also!
      Thanks for watching!

      @@lukewtclelandThey have ML-CD15 dome shape and ML-CS1625 rectangular shape. Both are great portable light modifiers.

      I'm curious. Why would you use that dome outdoor? It sends out flash power all over the place, to the clouds, to the mountains to the right of you, to everything outside of the image and even behind you. It could bring in unwanted reflections and colors from things outside of our frame. You waste flash & battery. And the size of the light surface is still too small to have a significant softer light, unless you do macro shots and take a really close up shot. If you shoot fisheye or ultrawide, I can somewhat understand, but then you can use the wide-angle adapter that is built in your flash (14mm).

      I use the same setup. I like how you can bend the dome to have different results. I had some trouble at first using the V1 and X2T controller I had a lot of misfires. I was using it in my hand as an off camera flash. I fixed this by setting the max radio distance to 30m instead of 100m and scanning radio channels to see which ones were available. After that the misfires almost never happen.

    9:00 Funnily enough, I’ve always shot vertical with my right hand (the one pressing the shutter) in that position you find weird: under the camera, with the elbow in front of my body.
    And it was both an intuitive and conscious decision for a few logical reasons:
    - Your arm is more stable with the hand under the camera body, against your chest, So less potential for shake, and less tiring for your arm.
    - And if you hold the camera like you do (holding the camera from above, with the elbow out), your arm takes more space, somebody can bump into your elbow, you can bump into somebody, your elbow can block the view of another person/photographer behind you (events, fashion runways, sports, etc).
    - Moving from horizontal to “vertical bottom”, takes less effort than having to move your entire elbow up in the air to get there.
    Less effort, strength, energy, more stability, more confort, less space taken, less risky, and faster.
    So all in all, although it’s a feeling and a habit thing (which you can change), it also makes more sense to me to shoot vertical that way.

    • @lukewtcleland
      @lukewtcleland  Рік тому

      Oh fun! It does take some time to learn. It's hard to give you settings because there are a lot of options on how to shoot a reception, that may be a helpful video to others as well, so I'll put in on the list to make a video about soon.

    I tried using the Godox V1 N with its wireless remote trigger. The flash is capable of going as low as 1/256 power, but the remote cannot set it below 1/128.
    I hoped a firmware update of the remote trigger works fix that issue, but finding a solution on the company’s website was an exercise in futility.

      @DanielSchweinert 2 місяці тому

      FYI the remote X1Pro has a setting to extend it to 1/256 that needs to be activated than it works!

    I love the V1S, I have three of them and have used them for a couple years now with great satisfaction.
    HOWEVER: Two have broken, one the flimsy hotshoe (easily replaceable, 4 screws and a $20 part).
    The other stopped firing entirely, suspected a faulty trigger coil. It is not a user replaceable part. Apparently MANY folks have suffered this issue.
    I tried replacing the flash tube just to be sure it wasn't that... no good.
    I'll still buy another one to replace it, but just be aware, these things do have some weaknesses.
    Probably good to buy a backup to have on hand in case one goes out on you during a shoot.

    • @lukewtcleland
      @lukewtcleland  Рік тому

      Yeah! A few people have commented saying the same thing, that they can break pretty easily. Thankfully mine have stayed in one piece so far! But thanks for those tips incase mine do break!

    The thing about buying the godox lights is that you are buying into an ecosystem. Newer now has a round head but it doesn’t work. I don’t know if there is an adapter for it but then its going back to carry more stuff. Also Pro foto its not even in the radar of an average user. Its cost prohibitive. I will stay with the V1. The shoe issue is now easily replaceable.
