      Nice! That consistency in location is similar with a lot of our ectomycorrhizal mushrooms ... a good memory can serve mushroom hunters really well!

    A week ago a friend took me hunting for Chanterelles on Mt Hood for my first time. Yesterday another friend showed me an area up the Columbia River Gorge. I’m so excited that I finally know how to identify the Chanterelles. We also harvested lobster and cauliflower.
    This morning I happened to stumble onto this video. You have an excellent description of different mushrooms.
    I also have a great appreciation for your HD camera that you are filming with.

    It is a good year. Finally able to restore my freezer chantrelle and lobster stash. Its been 3 years since we had this good of season around the Kitsap Pen. I was thinking tword the end of the month to forage the upper Dungeness river for matsuki. I did well up there back 10 years ago.

      Nice! Always great to have chanterelles and lobsters stored away for leaner times ... hopefully the matsutake season is equally bountiful. I'd be curious to hear about whether or not you encounter success up the Dungeness this year. Hoping conditions continue to favor mushrooms deeper into the fall season 🤞

    I seem to find “smooth” chanterelle here on the east coast in Maryland, and July seems to be the prime month, depending on the rainfall. I have found chanterelle that are a bit different that I refer to as golden chanterelle. They seem to be more stout with thicker stipes.

    • @MushroomTrail
      @MushroomTrail  18 днів тому

      Interesting! I suspect that the "Smooth Chanterelle" may be Cantharellus lateritius and that the Golden may be Cantharellus cibarius ... even though we have different species out here in the PNW than you have out there, it is interesting to note that all of the Golden Chanterelles used to fly under the same scientific name. I suspect that there will be even more species splits to come.

      @@MushroomTrailyes, I think most people refer to our chanterelles here as lateritius, smooth chanterelle. I love coming across the Goldie’s though, so thick and meaty!😊. Hope to make it out to the PNW someday!👍

      @@MushroomTrail I discovered using my air fryer at 325° for about 5-7 ninutes in a foil bowl with pads of butter, salt, pepper, fresh garlic is my new way to cook them. They don't lose any liquid and the edges have a little crunch! This is on my middle rack. I believe the air fryer works better with the hot air circulation. I used to saute in an iron skillet but they would lose liquid fast and get rubbery if cooked too long. Air Fryer is now king!! Cheers!

    great video, thank you! :) i'm curious how one would identify old growth forests, as you mentioned in the video?

    • @MushroomTrail
      @MushroomTrail  2 місяці тому +1

      That's a great question! And the answer can vary quite a bit depending on your region and who you ask (sometimes the line can be blurry in separating mature secondary growth from old growth, but in much of WA we're looking for trees that are greater than 200 years old). There are also especially old stands (consisting of >400 year old trees here in WA) that we refer to as "ancient forests". Some things to consider are the tree makeup, tree canopy, dominant species, tree diameter, the presence of large snags and fallen dead wood, understory plants... and lots more. The forest in this video contains trees that are 300+ years old, and I would categorize portions of it as being "old growth" but not necessarily "ancient growth". You'll notice that many of the trees display different bark characteristics as they reach more and more mature growth. This is especially evident to me in old growth Douglas Firs, that often develop deep furrows and a different, flaky texture.
      If you're here in WA, this is an excellent resource to check out:

    Hi there. I foraged and found a bunch of winter chanterelles here in Florida today and three different types of milks caps. I’m going to give you a hard time about knocking milk caps. They are an east coast treasure. Fry them up in a batter like fried chicken and you’ll never knock them again. The chanterelles are good fried like that too but the milk caps are hearty and the latex makes them not mushy they are great for non mushroom lovers and add them to your duxelles for some chew in the mix instead of just soft s chrome like boletes and chants. 😊

    • @MushroomTrail
      @MushroomTrail  3 місяці тому +1

      Nice! That's very cool! I've heard of some winter chanterelles just beginning to come up in places out here in the PNW too. Curious to know which types of Milk Caps you're finding out there. I've seen a lot of Russulas popping up (closely related to the Milk Caps) ... but not too many Milk Caps recently. Already getting excited for the coming Candy Cap season though!

      @@MushroomTrail the corrugated ones are starting to come in strong. They are really good for frying. My fav is the Lactifluus Voluminous although I get Delicious too mostly early season. The Indigos are sparse and mid summer. The white ones are peppery. All three of the edibles are prolific. I harvest over an 8 mile track. On horseback. Only way to go! 🍄. I also get the big ones in the process. (Chickens white and Orange and big polypores). It’s really nice. Very private.

    So I have a question. How long does it take for these to grow ? It seems if I walk on a trail one day there are none and the next day Bam! big ones.

    • @MushroomTrail
      @MushroomTrail  3 місяці тому

      That's a great question! And it often depends a lot on the environmental conditions. A little rain often does wonders to spur rapid growth and, although it depends on the species, temperature also plays a crucial role in how quickly mushrooms grow (oftentimes if it is getting into the 60's, that is ideal ... but it really does depend on species). If we hit a patch of consistent temps that fall within a species' "sweet spot" you will see rapid growth.
      The Pacific Golden Chanterelle is a little unique, because its fruiting body is particularly long-lived ... it will often grow for well over a month and is typically regarded as a relatively slow grower. This has been such a great year for them so far! Fingers crossed that it continues! 🤞

I'm excited about the rain that's in the immediate forecast, combined with slightly cooler temps ... things should really be popping this weekend! • @MushroomTrail
      @MushroomTrail  3 місяці тому +2

      Thanks - I think it really is a possibility based on observations ... but just a theory at this point. I still have more questions than answers, but would love to see more research go into that topic.

    just wondering; do you voiceover your recordings in post or is this live commentary?

    • @MushroomTrail
      @MushroomTrail  3 місяці тому

      I try to keep it as close to 100% live commentary as possible ... seems to make it more conversational, authentic, and easier to edit. Occasionally if I get a bad audio file or other interruption while filming, I have to improvise... but that always ends up being being a little more work, is often less fluid, and is not ever the plan. My goal on these walks is to make it feel as if you're out there with me, in real time, seeing what we see.

    • @MushroomTrail
      @MushroomTrail  3 місяці тому +2

      Unfortunately I'm not as familiar with those areas ... but ironically, someone was just mentioning that they were finding them in the coastal forests of Northern California just off of 101 ... I know that isn't super specific, but they're definitely there! And they're definitely out right now in your area. I'd recommend checking out the "Explore" tab on iNaturalist to get a feel for what local habitats they're popping up in. You could even narrow the time window to the last month or so to enable yourself to get a really good sense of what areas are beginning to wake up early for the mushroom season! Good luck out there!

      That is true - there are so many out there!
