The three of you together would possibly make the largest collection of mushroom knowledge that might even rival the mushroom guru Paul Stamets. Please try and make this happen. You could still be the camera man, those two don't seem to mind being on camera. It would be the best collaboration since peanut butter collaborated with jelly! In 100 years people will be telling their kids stories about the time you guys collaborated that they heard from their grandparents! It might even cause UA-cam to implode into a black hole from all the expert knowledge. 🙏 I'll be waiting and hoping. 👀🙏🙏

Great work as always!!! Here in my part of Northern CA we've had literally an hour of rain in the last several months, I am getting so antsy for mushroom season watching PNW foragers!
I have leukopaxillus along my lower driveway! I actually harvest mine. Probobly not recommended, but I dry them, then re hydrate later in boiling water then drain. Never had any ill effects yet, but use small amounts
Wow! That's incredible - I have never heard of those being consumed. I have to ask, what inspired your consumption? And what was your experience? Was it bitter tasting even after boiling?
@MushroomTrail nibble and spit test. After not physically seeing God, I dried a few. After hydration, they taste like any other mushroom but with a thick texture....more like a bland shitake
That's super interesting. I remember reading that they were likely nontoxic, but bitter and tough to digest. You're the first person I've heard from who has had direct experience consuming them.
Wow that's really funny: I was on a mycological society field trip a couple of weeks ago and it dark out, so I busted out my UV light and shined it on all the specimen we collected that day and also stumbled across Leucopaxillus albissimus's fluorescence completely by accident. Was really impressive!
Nice! I was truly floored by just how incredible that glowing neon blue was ... one of the most beautiful sights I've seen in a long time. And so unexpected! Very cool that we both happened upon this discovery at similar times.
Those orange/red wax caps look crazy under black light. They look bright neon orange under the black light. At least the dried samples I have do. I'm going to hit up the patch that's been growing near me tomorrow to see if the same applies to fresh samples.

It's weird how they seem to go in boom/bust cycles ... seems like they have a special fondness for large volumes of rain, so perhaps the recent rains that we've been getting will bring some flushes your way! Has it been relatively dry in your local forest the past few years?
@@MushroomTrail My area has been in a drought for the last 16 years. We did have a huge rainstorm last week, but I've only found Honey Mushrooms in one spot-they don't grow everywhere.
I definitely seem to be bumping into them in greater abundance this year than in years past (and in spots that I haven't noticed them before). Perhaps these rains will bring some flushes into your forest. You'll have to let me know if they start to pop up there ... they really started to hit the last week or two down here.

I have an endless thirst to learn and understand more about fungi... and UA-cam seemed like a great way to spread knowledge and enthusiasm for this incredible field. At this point, I haven't really seen a reason to make this channel about me -- it's really about the mushrooms! Who knows, at some point, perhaps I should do a reveal or insert myself into the equation in different ways. But for now, happy to simply be the cameraman and voice behind the Mushroom Trail!
Love your videos and that you are local. Always wish I could meet someone with you knowledge whenever I find something weird in the woods... Lol. I think I found, as close as I can tell, a Boletopsis leucomelaena. Found them in an area where I was picking pine mushrooms.
Thank you so much for your advice about finding candy near Hazel trees. I found look-alike so many times. But I started looking for them again and found something that ticked every single box and then looked and saw it was growing under our wild hazel/Filbert tree. Now I’ve got them and I’m drying them and I smell maple syrup! I’m so happy to finally found these. I post mushroom videos too, but I studied my psychology in 2013 and so many of the names have changed. I’m afraid my videos are not as accurate as they could be.

I'm really quite shocked that I've been unable to find reference to some sort of mycorrhizal association with Hazelnut in the literature ... there is plenty of reference to Tanoak and Douglas Fir ... but I'm convinced there's something going on with Hazel too. I just found one today that had the pheasant feather looking cap growing right up against an old cut stump at a customers house & had to go look at it. When I went to pluck it, it would not come up & I was a bit confused why it wouldnt tear from the mycelium or snap off. I got a good grip on it & pulled up a stipe that looked exactly like a 10 inch carrot! I have pictures of the cap & stipe if you want to see it. I have never seen anything like it before. Still unsure of what mushroom it is. It was eaten a bit & gilled.

I found it at 2520 west Montgomery road deer park WA 99006 Google earth will show you the exact stump on the north eastern edge of his property, just outside of his backyard fence. Like I said, I have pictures. He didn't care I took em or willing to share. He has sensors & cameras all over his property. They knew when I opened their gate & his wife called him imididiatly to make sure he knew I was there to greet me. He still didn't know I was there until I was already around their house & on my way back to my truck after dewebbing.
Well, you convinced me, just ordered a UV flashlight! Another awesome video!

@MushroomTrail as far as inspired consumption, they had a citrus/fruity smell to them, sparking the other 2 things....
Wikipedia says none of the leukopaxillus species are thought to be poisonous, and there are 15 species.....seemed "safe" to try them out

@ actually not yet. I’ve used maple syrup though, and thought that since candy caps have a similar taste profile it must be worth trying.

It's not like they have a mushroom or pot farm! That was the only mushroom I found there. Lol!
