@Arras13568 Battle of Leotung. 1 brig(steam and sail, likely) and 1 dedicated steamer versus around 39 total ships, mostly junks, which were likely entirely sail-powered. This was in the 1850's, so not full-blown iron yet, but iron knees(internal supporting beams) were well in use for ships by this point. You got a mix of both worlds in this time period versus the pirate junks which are likely all wood and sail with likely outdated cannon and firearm technologies.
I don’t think a lot of people realise just how terrifying ironclads would’ve been at the time. They would have been faster, better armoured, and better armed than 99.99% of their opponents and HMS Warrior couldn’t be penetrated by any naval cannon in existence at the time it was built. The only way to take one was by boarding, but an ironclad could outrange you by 1 or 2 miles with their cannons.
Oh trust me, they knew. Look up the Battle of Shimonoseki Straits. American civil war ironclad warship USS Wyoming showed up on the hunt for confederate ironclad CSS Alabama in Japan at the same time the emperor gave the order to “Expel the foreign barbarians”. 2 warships of sail and a steamer with support from 4 shore batteries tried to sink Wyoming, they were utterly decimated. 2 sunk and 1 severely wounded, with all the shore batteries taking damage as well.
The captain of the last ship must have thaught that the Ironclad run out of ammo and tried to come as close as possible before their hopes where sent to hell... truly terrifying but well animated!
