The downloads folder on your iPad as well as "saved to iPad" will only save files locally. They are not backed up in iCloud. You would need to designate a separate iCloud folder to save your files. You will find, though, that a lot of time time, if your using apps like Garageband, your files will automatically save to the cloud.

Thank you for taking the time to read my comments and questions and replying.
Unfortunately Files cannot do Dropbox?
Hi Gert, you can but you need to make sure you have the Dropbox app installed first.
How do I create a file
You do that in the individual apps. You can then choose to save a file in Flies or somewhere else via the share sheet.
What about notability and files, seems that I can not open them starting from files?
That's correct. Notability and other apps like that are not cloud storage apps. They are entirely different types of apps.
Thanks a lot!
You’re very welcome.
Help! Can't get rid/delete a file on google drive from ipad. I recently copied a file from my ipad to G Drive. The file transfer did not complete for some reason and the copy was interrupted. I now have a "ghost" file on my google drive (with a no entry icon at the bottom of the file's icon (which is also greyed out) when viewed on the Ipad's Files app. The ghost file does not exist when I viewed the G drive from windows or FE explorer on Ipad or from a browser. Any suggestion on how such ghost files can be deleted as its greyed out, I can't access it to delete it.
That looks like it is a Google Drive end issue. The only suggestion I have there is reaching out to Google help to see if they can make any suggestions.
@@Carl_Pullein Thanks for the feedback, I doubt its a google drive issue. Virtually all other access methods of G Drive doesn't show the file existing. Only the files app on Ipad, other file manager apps on Ipad does not show the file existing on the directory either. Only Files. Its no big deal but very irritating.
@@cvhawkeye6255 Hey, did you fix it? I'm stuck with the same problem :/
@@abqrundtief No, having to live with it. Does google have a function to purge/erase my cloud space? Don’t really want to start a new ac just for 2 error files. Annoying.
@@cvhawkeye6255 maybe disable google as a cloud service in the files app?
I cant find the: “on my ipad” file
Was disappointed you did not explain about the left column where the 3 dots are shown with 3 menu selections. The connect to server is an interesting feature that will allow you to connect to a server.
But FILES isn’t in my menu bar. Where do i find FILES. HELP!!! 🤪
swipe down from the centre of your screen and type "Files" in the search box. Or, if you have a keyboard, press CMD+Spacebar and type "Files".
He fact that you need a tutorial to know how to browse files on ipad is testimony of how broken the system is
I don't have the files app on my ipad.
What version of iOS a=do you have?
@@Carl_Pullein thank you for getting back to me. My iPad is a14.5.1, 7th edition, model # MW772LL/A. I always download things but can never recover the downloaded data. It never ask me prior to downloading where to downloaded the material to. It is in the computer but where, ??????. Appreciative for your help.
@@belindafernandez5514 If you drag down from the top and type in "Files" - you should see the files app there.
I pulled down from the you tube reply, from the settings, and Home Screen and nothing appears. Thank you for your kind and thoughtful gesture . Appreciative, Belinda
Why would I think iCloud is the same "app" as Files? it's not an App it's a location within Files for storing in the cloud.
It's surprising how many people get confused between these two things. I know I did when Files was first introduced.
@@Carl_Pullein I'm watching this tutorial because I'm trying to figure out how to get twitter to access Files or transfer images from Files to Photos so twitter can access images there - it's just one thing after another with Apple! Beyond me why they seem to go out of their way to make their OS so unusable
@@StuartSeaton Hi Stuart, if you go to Files and copy the image you want, you can paste it in Twitter. Opening the image from Files and clicking on the share sheet will allow you to save the image to your photos.
LOL. Apple fan boys always tell you that you don’t need a manual for Apple’s products. Just as you don’t need a manual for a pencil.
And still there are thousands of these “let me explain how ..... works on iOS or Mac 😂
ooh, I think that was a very long time ago when few people used Mac's (the late 90s early 2000s if I remember). These days, Macs are not just for the power users, everyone uses them and so a little help is often required.
Given that I am a strict Windows/Android user; buying an ipad means I have ZERO idea what I'm doing. The system is just...idiotic to me. Yeah, I definitely need all the guides and helpful videos I can get :D
they need to rename this app to drives 🍕
I am very that I have discovered your learning series. Thank you
Always happy to help.
I was hoping to find out why my subconscious files do not show up in my file folder? Please!
Find out why my usbc flash drive files do not show up on the iPad?
@@karenbutcher5774 Hi Karen, what do you mean by "Subconscious" files?
@@Carl_Pullein it’s been awhile since I posted that Carl but I think I meant subfolders
@@karenbutcher5774 Your subfolders will be inside your parent folders.
Files and keyboard cases with trackpads really are blurring the line between iPads and MacBooks.
I would agree with you there.
Why don’t you show how it works then by using a real life example ?
I created files in numbers❗️And before update to iOS 14.7.1, I had access to them all and now I need permission to get into them ( that’s just 💩💩💩💩 ) . So, I went to iCloud Drive and turned OFF numbers❗️ Now, I have access to my files. Just not sure what sneaky 💩💩💩💩💩 🍎 is going to do next, or how this affects things. 8-6-2021
so basically files app is like the file manager on Android
No, file manager for Android is so EASY TO USE AND UNDERSTAND
Uggghhhh! You didn’t explain how they work. How you save files. How you find files. Why when you save files and it says “Path: Local”, yet there is no “Local” tab in Files. Why files show in Path but not in Files. Smh
My apologies.
Awesome app? That is the most confusing app that I used in my life! It's the only file manager where you don't know where your files went and when you think you've definitely managed to save one locally THIS IS NOT THERE!
Sorry to hear that.
You strayed off course mentioning in a confusing way items that DO NOT have to do directly with Files. I searched “Files” and you came up with more extraneous material than how to use Files and the options. We don’t care about One Drive, Windoz, what you use or don’t use and all the other baloney. Next time address “Files” and don’t go off course. Thanks!
IOS is horrible. Android is SO much more intuitive.
Files is, beyond any shadow of a doubt, Apples worst ever software application. What irks me the most is that their desktop finder is literally perfect. Files is pure crap.
Hate Apple so much. But I got procreate... this video makes me hate Apple even more. Not you... Apple.
Bad apple. all this time to defend their incompetency.. NOthing pro about an ipad pro.
What a useless video. There is nothing in here that tells you how to organize the file structure.
Files is the messies piece of garbage apple have come up with, well the hole IOS is garbage, i thought this function would make IOS/ipad usable, but they just messed this up as well. i love mac os, that OS just works. However they must have been drunk during the hole process of making IOS.
Long winded
I just want to make and save notes🥹
"make and save" away, Mahnaz.
@@Carl_Pullein hey,I m 58 and technoligically challenged
@@mahnazqaiser3371 All you need do is open the notes app, type and close the notes app. Your note will be saved automatically. All you need worry about is typing your notes. Let Apple take care of everything else for you.

so basically files app is like the file manager on Android
I guess so. I’ve never used Android, so I unfamiliar with how that works.
@@Carl_Pullein Me too since I only use Android and now I tried ipad, been looking for the file manager and couldn't find it 😂 I went to youtube and found your video. And thats the only time I figure it out 😂 thanks for your video!
It is not. Android file manager gives you full access to device file structure. Files app on iOS is a sandboxed app. If for example you make a folder and put your photos in it, while on Android they will show on gallery, on IOS you have to export to photos app otherwise you cannot see them.
