- Michael Palmisano (@Guitargate ) turned me on to a video of Prince playing his song "Cream" on acoustic guitar, and there's an awesome blues lick right in the middle that jumped out at me as soon as he played it.

Prince & the blues?? Never expected to hear yourself say???? That dearth of knowledge is how stuff happens. I'm just saying. Did you at least read up after you posted this?
I was aware of his soloing prowess, so I knew he had crazy lead chops, but there are a lot of people who can shred endlessly, yet can't (or don't) ever slow down and play some soulful rhythmic blues licks like this. That's where my surprise comes from.
So everyone is aware. When it came to guitar styles, Prince could play it all. I've been lucky enough to see him 5 times live, and he went from funk, rock,R&B to blues, jazz, and country in a blink of an eye.
There's used to be a video on YT around 10 yrs ago that was a 7 minute late night jam of Prince playing some slow blues. It unfortunately got taken down, but in that video, Prince shows blues chops that would rival anybody. I put Prince right there next to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Steve Vai as my personal 3 headed monster of guitarist.
@@Texasbluesalley
It is within ALLLL BROWN SKIN COLORED so-called "black" PEOPLE. IT'S CALLED SOUL 😄😆😁
Watch Prince do Red House live. Oh he can slow it down.
Prince, IMO, is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. Most people know he's good, but you just never hear him mentioned when they talk about great guitar players.
💯👌🎸
This is just my opinion of course, but I think "the industry" doesn't really know how to market someone with so many skills. The industry is really good at marketing people as a great singer, or a great guitar player, or a great dancer, or a great whatever..... but when someone is so damn good at so many things, it becomes a challenge to know exactly who to promote him to. It's also worth pointing out that most guitar players who can play really well are more than happy to promote themselves primarily as a great guitar player and let everything else fade to the background. But I get the feeling that Prince saw himself as much more than a guitar player, so he didn't endlessly pander to the guitar crowd the way someone with a less diverse range of skills might do.
@@Texasbluesalley I agree...definitely did not know how to market him. Or truly appreciate him for those great skills, either. But that's the music industry I guess, sadly. Yes I believe that as well, that he saw himself as much more than just a guitar player (ever see him play the drums?? WOW!!!). And Prince knew his true worth and that's why he fought the music industry, the "gatekeepers" as hard as he did. He also loved learning from other musicians as well as teaching, just sharing the complete joy of music and musicianship. He was a MASTER of his craft in my eyes, gave us SO MUCH and I still miss him. Thanks for doing this video @Texas Blues Alley 💜💜💜
On the other hand, it may now be such a commonly shared and agreed upon opinion, that it may have falsified itself ;)
(just like the underrated rhythm guitar playing of Eddie van Halen, and ofcourse the Bad Monkey ;))
@@martijn_yt Definitely! EVH & Bad Monkey 👍🔥🔥🎸
Prince was truly God's GREATEST gift to music. His attack on the guitar was phenomenal and he had the PERFECT tone. Miss him to death.
💯💯💯 His attack on the guitar, the piano AND the drums...just phenomenal. When Prince said "I AM music" I said yes! I miss him too. He literally changed my life and I love him for giving us so much. RIParadiseBeautifulOne ur still missed 💜
LOVE this lesson AND the Prince/Cream performance with that BIG PURPLE GUITAR!
When Eric Clapton first heard Prince guitar solo on Purple Rain he said "that's my career over".
Dude , Prince mastered EVERY facet of music.
Prince & EVH...the 2 best, most amazingly talented, guitar players that ever lived on this planet. EVER.
Prince was a blues player at heart. His rhythm playing is often overlooked due to his godly soloing talent. He was a master at the Pentatonic scale, as the Purple Rain solo demonstrates. There are many examples of him using blues rhythms in his songs though and you'll find them spread out across his albums. I'd recommend the song Adore as an example of his chord progressions in rhythm. Knowing how much you love SRV, you would probably find some use of the chords in that song. Jason Read did an excellent lesson on Adore a few years back.
Great video idea ! The feel he has during that whole performance is insane, you did a great job teaching that lick which is one of the tastiest of the Cream part of the medley.
I agree. His feel and timing were just impeccable.
To be honest this is the same lick I wanted to make a guitar lesson of, but didn´t. We people have same minds and frequencies. Something running deep!!!!
Thanks for focusing on this one, Anthony. If you've never seen Prince do the solo to While My Guitar Gently Weeps during the 2004 R&R Hall of Fame show, it's pretty impressive.
Prince made a bad performance by the singing skeleton that was Tom Petty legendary. That solo is just epic.
@@st3pp3nw0lf86 I encourage you to dig deeper into his music. He has some incredible solos out there.
Pretty impressive, is right So Amazing!! One of the things I truly loved about Prince is that he let his guitar speak for him, he definitely didn't need to brag.
Had no idea about this until I saw this video. Brooo that was one of the most pimp tight things I've ever seen. One of the coolest mfs of all time.
Loved Prince!
Great upload and presenting it in a digestible way.
Fantastic Anthony. Have you released any courses on how you transcribe these solos? Always been a challenge for me and I really appreciate your teaching style
I don’t know how it would be a surprise to anyone with a grasp of the electrical guitar that Prince was a great and surprisingly rootsy guitarist. All the professionals I know recognise this.
Have you not heard his Purple House take on Jimi's Red House? , you should check out his performance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps live with Tom Petty and others. Prince is well versed in the Blues i guess those that follow him know already but yeah i guess those that don't are shocked.
@Stansia Michael you can always tell the people that are not day 1 Prince people. By the mere fact of being surprised of the gifted person we already knew about. You can't explain Prince to anyone. They just have to catch up to a leagacy we'd been following since day 1. They have about 50 albums to catch up on plus interviews 😅
@@kennethbeavers6903 his bootleg collection is phenomenal.
Very true.
@@kennethbeavers6903 agree …the man was also impossibly productive. So once you get into Prince, it really is like the longest rabbit home ever….
@@kennethbeavers6903 your right, i shouldn't be surprised at their surprise and should rejoice that another has found their way to Prince. I was too quick to defend him and forgot that not everyone has or knows much of Prince.
I like that kids programme Blues Clues
Yet another guitar guy just now discovering Prince …likely having ignored him during his lifetime:)
Of all people??? The dude was a musical genius and been rippin up blues throughout his career! And Prince ??? Quit acting like yall didn't know
You already know......Prince had many incredible solos throughout his musical journey. He was definitely underrated and underappreciated.
💯 💜
DaRuckusBringa 💯💯💜
Love this man! Could you perhaps make a video about blues in the key of F? I feel like it's the most uncomfortable and unusual blues to jam with, but one that totally makes sense to play when you're jamming with a band playing the key of E when you are half-step-down-tuned your guitar, and the others are not!
That's a GREAT idea!
Finally! Prince the greatest guitarist that never lived
So true sweetie he is the Prince of music 💜
You might want to have a listen to a fellow named Wes Montgomery. Prince was a genius. Not the greatest guitar player ever.
@Adrien Matthews if that's the case Wes wasn't the greatest either. However everyone has their own vibe and that's what I look for in musicians
@@AdreinMatthews
Even Prince would probably say Wes Montgomery is better.
@@daniellamantia7324 Thats not what he said though. He said guitarist. Do you know about guitar?
That's a very sweet lick
Being a guitar player myself most people play a song different every time.
Question. How does the "Triangle shape" fit in with that groove since the song is in Bb?
Prince was an incredible guitarist. Blew my mind, too. Guess the Blues was not as important to him as some of us.
Prince covered every facet of music and been playing like that since he was a kid
Prince was music and it was more important him and everyone that caught on to Prince from day 1 always knew it was about the music 1st and every facet of it. That was a man who was and will still be light years ahead of everyone
@@kennethbeavers6903 Prince wss multitalented. A musical genius.
Have you looked at some of Steve Cropper's licks and rhythm playing. Very adaptable to blues.
so sorry to hear that you were also one of the "guitar lovers" who had no idea that he was one of the best guitar players of all time, may I ask, did you also live under a stone or so??? i just don't get that... said but true...
Killer! Glad I found this!
Thanks!

This song is bonkers. After seeing Prince play this on SNL 15 or so years ago, he has had a permanent spot on my Mt. Rushmore.
ua-cam.com/video/aTstIgnVOwA/v-deo.html
I legitimately thought it was Tracy Chapman Gimme one reason to stay here when I heard the beginning 😅
Hey, not a bad source. He's like a combo of Hendrix, funk, Steve Cropper, Little Richard, and weird stuff.
You don't know Prince very well he could play jazz and even classical his former girlfriend vanity said he would play Mozart
Hi there, I am trying to find information in regards to buying just the 5 boxes essential licks course... does anyone know if i can do that? or do i have to sign up for the whole package called txba locals?
Send me an email, and I’ll explain the options.
@@Texasbluesalley hi thanks for replying!! what is your email address?
Jealous
Yep, nothing but jealousy!! The flaming WHITE kind, which is the worse kind!! Prince would play him under the table.. Also Check out Jesse Johnson too!!
Why so shocked? People are always worshipping SRV, who made his career off the backs of other more talented, living, blues artists such as Buddy Guy. Anyways, Prince was an underrated guitarist because of the way he was perceived by mainstream media. It's a shame. He has such a vast catalog of music, spanning many genres. Prince was all about the blues. His solos on the Question of U, The Ride are drenched in the blues. Dreamer, I Want To Be Free,......just to name a few more.
💯 Oh man so true..The Ride is just WOW 🔥🔥🔥 most definitely one of my faves. I will never understand why Prince's wide range of musical genius was never played as much as other artists were played. Definitely underrated. He was everything. 💜🔥🎶🎤🎹🎸🥁🎼💜
You know your Prince.
The Ride & The Question of U are great songs... heavy in blues.
Prince was just way too good at everything else and was so busy splitting our wigs that we took time to get how f#cking great he was as a guitar player. My take on it, for what it’s worth guys.
