  • Overfeeding & too much moisture combine for a nasty surprise! Trying to fix issues in your worm bin too fast can lead to disastrous results but with a little awareness of the problem and a slow correction toward normal conditions you can get your worm bin back to cranking out natural organic fertilizer for your garden in the form of worm castings! Compost worms feast on aerobic microbes along with their food scraps but off gassing & anaerobic microbes can lead to disaster!
    In this video I realize pretty quick things weren't going so well as I show you what I do to correct it & why it happened in the first place. You'll see some time lapses or worms devouring food scraps as well as how I prepare my coffee grounds before they go into my worm bins. I also inoculate my Urban Worm Bag with Wrigglebrew Worm Casting Tea amzn.to/46PhV2A from my last video: • Worm Casting Tea With ...
    Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / vermicompostlearnbydoing

    It's kinda funny, just yesterday I checked my 50 gal growbag bins, one bin I put way too much pineapple (fresh pineapple from T-day cranberry sauce), almost with the same results. It was beginning to heat up, plus I noted there were no worms in the center of the feeding zone. I redistributed the food and just fluffed it up to keep it from going anaerobic. This was only after 3 days, a few days more I would have had a stinking mess, lol.
    I'm finding large volume bins have their own little differences than a tray or hard bin systems. You can give them a lot more food at one time, however, excessive moisture is always a possibility. Definitely a learning curve!
    The good thing is you caught it in time, the worms will forgive you.
    Enjoy your videos!
    Stay Well !!!

Thanks so much for watching and passing on how you managed your bin!🪱🪱🪱

    Not too surprising that you had leftovers of that last feeding - especially that large mound of pumpkin that you were unable to break apart into smaller bits. Speaking fo pumpkins, I just hauled one of the many pumpkins I scored recently out to the park to feed the deer. It was already mush & when I cut it open to try salvaging seeds, it was already full of mold & the seeds looked nasty. Hopefully there was enough of it that the deer can take advantage of :) I've got to keep an eye on these pumpkins - otherwise I'll be picking up the next one with a sponge & a bucket - haha!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  7 місяців тому +1

      I'm sure the deer will find something they like! I haven't figured out the best storage for my pumpkin haul that's for sure! I put them in one gallon ziploc bags and froze them but that was clearly way too much...now I have 8 bags of way too much pumpkin frozen solid...I guess I'll have to defrost them, divide them up again and refreeze them...maybe I'll get it right next year😂 You definitely don't want to be picking the next one up with a sponge & bucket...I can attest to had bad rotten pumpkins smell!! Thanks for stopping by AV!!🪱🪱🪱

    • @A-V
      @A-V 7 місяців тому +1

      I'm somewhat constrained on freezer space... which *really* makes me regret grabbing a number of fairly huge pumpkins. In hindsight, I believe I should have left all the big ones & taken only small ones. I have a feeling that I will be making lots and lots of deer friends over the coming weeks... and I suppose the bright side is that I'll have an ever growing collection of pumpkin seeds. They that can either become human food or an ingredient for future batches of worm chow :)

    Sometimes, it’s so easy to overfeed. I really like how you treat your worms. You saw two baby worms on the bottles and took them off and put them back in the bin. Some other worm farmers I watch are not as observant or kind as you and it bothers me. I moved my can-of-worms from outside to inside. They really slowed down on their eating because of the colder outside temperature’s. Even though it was only in the high 40’s at night. They are really active inside now and I can feed them much more. I completely emptied my urban worm bag as I’ve had it with the zipper. I instead bought two 27 gal. Tote’s from Costco for just 8.99 a piece as a replacement for my uwb. I so enjoy your videos.

I definitely see my Outdoor Worm Bin red wigglers slow down in the "winter" even though it doesn't stay too cold for long. That is a total bummer about the UWB zipper but it sounds like you have 2 great replacements for cheap!! Thanks so much for the kind words & thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Patrick, I have a problem! First of all, thank you for all your wonderful videos! I thank God for you. I know you are a wonderful Problem Solver so I'm asking you because it's about worm bins. I am trying to get healthy and I have started losing weight on the Carnivore diet. I am feeling really great and so I'm planning on doing this the rest of my life, however long that might be.... since I'm already 80! I just got to thinking, what in the world will I be feeding these worms because I don't eat any veggies anymore? The diet is all meat, along with eggs and other lovely things, but no sugar and no carbohydrates. I think that my worms will be better off somewhere that will be seeing some veggies and veggie scraps occasionally! I have two worm towers with different kinds of worms in them. And I have a mixed worm farm in a bus bin. Does anybody find it successful to just up and sell everything? I would only do that if I found an experienced worm farmer that wanted to buy them though. As you and I have talked about before, they have been getting to be kind of heavy work for me, so I think I would be done with them pretty soon anyway. I would miss having them but I think it's best for them and for me. Do you have any great and wonderful ideas for me?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  6 місяців тому

      Thank you Cookie! So sorry to take so long to get back with you...We have been on a trip. That is so wonderful that you have found a diet that is working so well for you...I think you will be around for another generation or 20+ years as we were able to celebrated Autumn's grandmother's 102nd birthday with her a few years ago!! If you want to keep your worm bins, I think you could still use them to help get rid of your cardboard and paper waste while feeding them just a little bit of vegetable scraps from neighbors or friends...they really don't need much. You could also go more days between feedings and naturally prevent them from reproducing as you slow down feedings and perhaps combine and downsize your bins. But if you truly want to pass them on, perhaps you could put something out to your facebook or other groups of friends. You would be surprised at how many people get started by getting worm bins passed on by people moving or having to stop the hobby. I think that is the greatest gift...helping someone else reap the benefits of worm farming! I hope this gives you a few ideas on what you may be able to do...and perhaps someone will see your comment and come up with some more ideas as well!! I hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! Thanks for all your support this year!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hi Patrick and coffee grounds splattered executive producer, Good job you are so involved in your worm bins condition, things could have got an amount worse. Hey Patrick, I agree with all of your conclusions over the presence of food after so long, but another consideration could be your recent harvest. Even though the UWB doesn't jostle the worms as much as other forms of harvesting, perhaps there still is a delay after a harvest for the worms to get back to feeding? That bedding will be GONE after your thorough mixing of pumpkin leftovers. I hope you didn't hit Autumn with the coffee!

    Looks like you just had some bad timing with the big wet feeding and weather. It still looks good for the most part. The worms had somewhere else to go. I would have though that was a 3 week feeding for my worms. I bet there will still be some pineapple next time too.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  7 місяців тому +1

      Yep, bad timing for sure...I did wonder if I hadn't seen that liquid and maybe checked on it a few days later would they have eaten everything up and we wouldn't have even know things went anaerobic?!? I do love these big bins where you can screw things up, the worms can flee to another side of the bin, and then eat again when things calm down! I don't think I fully realized how much pineapple I dumped in there until I was editing and it was too late! Thanks so much for watching Ann!!🪱🪱🪱

    I always love these videos. However, I have a problem. I've got a five gallon bucket full of castings that still has worms and I'm sure cocoons. Do I just use the castings in my garden without fear that the red wigglers will eat the roots off my vegetables? I am also looking forward to using castings in the spring for starter mix for seeds, will the worms eat the seeds? Still learning and need all the help I can get. Next year I am looking at making twice as many castings. How do you and your viewers get rid of (use castings) your extra castings?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  6 місяців тому

      Lots of great questions there! Compost worms/red wigglers only eat dead or decaying food so they will not eat your vegetables' roots or the new seeds. You could try to bait out the worms while you are storing the castings. Here are some videos where I show how I store my castings: ua-cam.com/video/WCevZRPuYug/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/WMVNEk57ORs/v-deo.html To bait out your worms just put a little food and bedding in a small cup or container that you put holes in and bury it about an inch in the castings. Come back in 4-5 days and most of the worms will be in the bait cup and you can pull them out that way. It is important to try to keep as many of your worms as possible to restart your worm bin. But if any get into your garden or seed starting mix they will not harm your garden! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    I started my 1st bin from Uncle Jim's worm farm, new to worm farming but enjoying so far. I started with red wiggler mix from Uncle Jim's and I've looked on there website to find info but nothing yet, my question is do red wiggler worms squirm around really fast wen u touch them ¿?. Think I've got wat i didn't want

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  6 місяців тому

      I wouldn't say red wigglers squirm around really fast when you touch them, but they do move away. African Night crawlers and European night crawlers also mor e a little faster so it could be one of those type composting worms. If they move around super fast almost like a snake them it could be a Alabama jumping worm (they go by a lot of names like asian jumping worm etc.) but they are considered a pest especially around forested areas because of how they transform the landscape by eating down the duff layer preventing some tree saplings from thriving. So look up Alabama jumping worm or asian jumping worm and see if that looks like what you have...chances are you do not if you got it from Uncle Jim's and your worm bin is not outside touching the ground. I once got Alabama jumping worms in my Outdoor Worm Bin as you can see in this old video: ua-cam.com/video/wjMwLsgj3AE/v-deo.html My worm mixes to fantastic in this Urban Worm Bin and in my VermiHut: ua-cam.com/play/PLimznaPXKV0_jVcRI9rI5xnbAFqNP3WZ_.html I hope this helps, thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Do you see any mite blooms?

      I probably could have skipped a feeding or pushed it off for a few days..They will get to the pumpkin pretty fast now that I have it spread out, but the pineapple and apple will probably be there again when I check in...so some fast food for them was alright...it is such a big bin with a good size top surface area, I think I was able to spread it out enough to not cause more problems. I did not see any mite blooms, which when I do I usually see a lot on the surface or on the upper black part where the sides meet the top...which is another reason why I was a little surprised by the amount of food left...I'm still in the first year of this UWB & with it being outdoors, I'm still doing a lot of learning with each unique month of the year! Thanks for stopping by J&C!!🪱🪱🪱

      @Vermicompost yeah it's basically a CFT, right. Definitely a good to break the material up. With air temp and relative humidity becoming more moderate the worms will probably stay higher up, I'd think. Which probably means they're lower 🤣🤣🤣

    What's your best tip to keep it dry at the bottom and moist at the top?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  5 місяців тому +1

      That's a tough one. The best thing is to do your best to regulate the moisture with the kind and amount of food you feed. I find when I try to mist the top, because it is dry, I end up seeing it on the bottom in a few days. Mine is outside here in Florida so the humidity in the air has a big affect on my bin. I do find that if I harvest into my mortar tray, and leave it there for a day or two, the castings dry out to a fantastic moisture level! But I haven't had a mushy castings harvest in the Urban Worm Bag ever. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    • @MonzGary
      @MonzGary 5 місяців тому +1

      @Vermicompost makes sense. What if before I harvest, I open the bottom drawstring and leave it open for a day. Would that help dry it out and also drive any worms down there up so that when I do go rake castings out, it's dryer and worm free? Leaving it open would be more like having a traditional cft with pipes as a bottom. Appreciate your time! Ur channel is the only one I have alerts turned on!

      @@MonzGary Thank you!! I think that would help, I might give it a try...as long as I don't get stuff trickling out of the hole it should be a good experiment to try!! Thanks for the idea!!

    I have to disagree with the use of the water bottles. Unless you live in the Arizona desert heat like I do and even then I don’t have water bottles on my outdoor 4x24 ft worm bin. 🤷🏽I’m just saying

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  6 місяців тому

      Yep, every worm bin is different...I don't have to put water bottles in my 20 gallon fabric pot Outdoor Worm Bin that sits directly on the ground and in the shade. Unfortunately this Urban Worm Bin gets direct western sun for part of the day in the afternoon...and it's black and hangs up off the ground...so it heats up. I have thermometers buried deep on the sides and one shallow and I've seen 104℉ internally. Luckily my worms were able to flee to the other side. I've put up a sun shade that blocks about 85% of the sunlight but I can't put up a complete block because of the wind. I think if I had the same volume container but a larger surface area/shallower and sitting on the ground I wouldn't need frozen water bottles. Leaving the lid unzipped and pulled to the side would probably also help with the heat, but that's a no go for my wife😂 4x24 ft is a fantastic size to give the worms a lot of space to flee environmental heat and compost heat and it offers a lot of surface are so the bin doesn't become a heat sink! I have a good friend who Worm farms in Arizona and I am just amazed how you all do it!! Thanks so much for watching and telling us about your big worm bin!!🪱🪱🪱

      😂🤣😂 Yep!! I'm always learning!! I stacked so much pineapple in that one container, then must have put more food scraps on the top, because when I looked back on the video it was clear I put wayyyyyyy too much pineapple in!! Usually I dig through to make sure I don't have too much "forbidden" food in one feeding...I also should have put in way less pumpkin chunks in each bag of frozen pumpkin...so much learning goin on!! Thanks for stopping by to watch Mikko!!🪱🪱🪱
