  • This worm bin has outperformed all my expectations! These worm castings are amazing after just 50 days!! My 2nd harvest is a keeper & I'll be harvesting around 15 pounds every 30 days in this super productive Urban Worm Bag!! Watch as I feed, show you an easier way to harvest & separate the compost worms from the worm castings as they turn my food scraps and cardboard boxes into natural organic fertilizer for my garden in the form of vermicompost!
    We'll also look through the last feeding zone where we gave an enormous feeding 32 days ago prior to being out of town for our son's wedding. I also pick up a mortar tray to fit below the Urban Worm Bag & use it to harvest in a much easier way then I did last time, show how the worms reacted to the hurricane that passed by & get a peak at our sausage dog named Mini!!
    Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / vermicompostlearnbydoing
    Happy Vermicomposting Everyone!!!🪱🪱🪱

      Reverse agitation method🤔 I think things will get better as far as worms in the castings once I can stop cooling it down with frozen water bottles that "sweat" like crazy in our humidity, adding lots of moisture to the bin. I think they are attracted to the moisture and relative coolness down there. A year from now I'll have this system humming (and hopefully indoors if I can convince Autumn!!) So, you still get worms in your castings from the urban wormbag? I thought that was one of the plus points, not having any worms in the harvested compost? So weird, the worms seem to dive much deeper then mentioned in any scientific paper. Nice video, keep them coming.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  9 місяців тому +1

      Great points Wally!! I think two things are in play that would not usually be the case if I kept this indoors. Unfortunately they are both linked and maybe causing the worms to go down. I have this bin outside (my wife says it has to stay outdoors😂) on my lanai and the only spot for it is where the sun sets...so it gets hot inside there, down here in Florida. I think the worms flee the heat that radiates inwards from the black top of the bin...So I add frozen, sealed water bottles to the top surface to keep the temperatures in the mid eighties. Unfortunately because there is so much humidity in the air here in Florida, the bottles sweat...a lot, and add a bunch of moisture to the bin...which drains to the bottom...So I think the worms follow the moisture and flee the heat down to the bottom. I know compost worms are supposed to be in the duff layer, and they have weaker muscles than their cousin earth worms, but my guess is they will go where the food, moisture and air are, so they are not too bothered being 3 feet "below ground" in this UWB as it breathes real well. I think I will be able to run it better and more dry in the winter, and I'm hoping I get less worms in the castings as they do what they are supposed to do and continue to go up the bin!! Thanks for your great insight and questions and thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Now, I understand what's happening. Thanks for clearing that out. Have you ever considered a reflective blanket or is that over board? I guess it would lessen the moisture and the heat. But it's just a question. Maybe a good video experiment??

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  9 місяців тому +1

      I saw Steve over at the Urban Worm Company suggest that and I may give it a try! I put up a blind, which helped a lot, but because it needs to allow some air so it doesn't get ripped down in the wind, it also let's in some light. The black surface really cooks so that blanket might help! Thanks for the suggestion, it would make for a good long term experiment!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hi Patrick! Nice video! I’m enjoying seeing how the worm bag is progressing. You didn’t mention cocoons. Do you try to ‘save’ them or do they go out to the garden with the castings?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you Jayne!! I do run a cocoon nursery with my VermiHut worm castings sometimes to allow them time to hatch, but I usually throw my other castings into storage and put a bait cup in there to get the other worms I miss. I think many of the cocoons hatch and eventually end up as worms in my bait cups because I go in fits and spirts with using castings...so they usually have plenty of time to hatch. Great question!! Thanks so much for dropping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱

    I used to have a urban worm bag many years ago but got rid of if because it was tough to keep the contents evenly moist and the zipper on the bottom was really tough to unzip when it got full. I ended up breaking the zipper pull. Does anyone know if the zipper is still tough to unzip when full?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  9 місяців тому +1

      Great question! At some point they made a modification to the bottom of the Urban Worm Bag and took out the zipper down below. I'm not sure if they are on their second or third version but the one I purchased in December of 2022 has no bottom zipper. It has a draw string with a plastic cinching device and a bottom cover that has 4 buckles and 4 strips of velcro to keep it secure. I just keep this bottom cover off and leave the mortar tray underneath it. It sounds like they listened to the feedback and improved the UWB. I haven't had any trouble with the top zipper and I bought some of the cross straps to help with the sturdiness of the frame...one of the other issues that people mentioned in the earlier versions. I haven't had any issues with moisture so far but I have only had it for 8 months and two harvests. I'll definitely be looking out for any issues like that but so far so good with this version. Thanks so much for passing on your experience with the UWB and thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    A while back you picked out some black soldier fly larvae out of your outside bin. Did you ever have a bigger problem with the larvae? I am having a hard time getting keeping them out of my worm bin. They are close to taking it over. Is there anything you can think of to get rid of them. I've been picking them out but can't keep up with it. The problem with them is that they eat all the worm food. Any advice would be appreciated.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  9 місяців тому

      I have actually not seen any BSFL in my Outdoor worm bin in a while. When I first saw them I started plucking them out and I think that helped a little but I think the real reason is because it is too difficult for the BSFL to pupate and become flies after they get laid in my bin. They get lost among the flaps of the bin as they try to move away form the contents of the bin when they get old enough to go into the pupae stage. So I think a good solution for you will be to pluck as many as you can out. Then get some netting or a lid (with holes with netting over it so the bin can breath) that will trap any left inside the bin, and keep the flies from getting in from outside. If they can't pupate, which they don't like to do inside the bin, they can't become flies and if the flies can't get in to lay more eggs you will break their life cycle. You can also stop feeding the bin any food scraps and just stick to bedding for a good 3-4 weeks. Carefully monitor the moisture level and you should see the BSFL reduce in numbers to the point you can pluck them out. The worms will be fine eating the bedding where as the BSF's will find something better to lay their eggs on. I hope these techniques give you some relief!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@rickjay4639 My pleasure! One more thing...I do have a mosquito dunk in my rain barrel which is where I get the water to wet down my Outdoor Worm Bin. They prevent the mosquitos, gnats & fruit flies from making it to the fly stage...I haven't heard of them being used for BSF, but that may because they aren't a nuisance fly to anyone but worm farmers!! Just thinking this could also be another reason why I haven't seen any this year after the initial ones.

    I am on vacation and I have a problem. I can’t quit saving my food scraps. I can’t turn off my brain. It’s tough. While in upper New York I even called a worm farm to see if they knew someone that might want my scraps. He did say I could bring them to him for free and even get a tour of his farm. He was so nice. I didn’t get to do that we were heading out and couldn’t make it to his farm. I had to throw those scraps IN THE TRASH. We are still on vacation In Maine for a couple of days then head out again. I have a bag of scraps in my freezer again and my husband tells me that I’m going to have to get rid of it soon. We will be gone until the last of this month.
