    It has been super dry here in Delaware. But today I broke down the geobin and flipped the compost out, added coffee grounds, water, and built it back up. As I was putting the compost back in I was going to add some more finished compost to the geobin. Problem was my other compost pile was loaded with worms and the rebuilt pile was going to get hot. It sustained close to 140F for 6 days. I didn’t want to injury any of my worms so I left the other pile out for now.

      I was surprised at how long the temperature stayed in that 140 degree range. The worms were awesome and I was shocked at how many were in 2 pitchfork scoops. Awesome Patrick, I have another one in my shed and gave one to my brother. The extension office is a good resource for people to use.

      Check with your local cooperative extension office. We didn’t have a decent rain for over 40 days, last Monday we got 3.55”, and you know when it comes down that fast and hard it can’t soak in. But my rain barrel is filled. I can get pallets from work, I’m looking to build another compost area.

      Thank you! Since this I was able to add more grass and food scraps to fill it all the way up. I was even able to get some mushroom compost from a mushroom grower about 25-30 miles away. I also added a pvc pipe with holes in it to let it continue to breakdown for the fall and winter. I will add in the compost to the garden beds in spring. 😁

    I left an earlier comment, guess I did not hit the comment button, anyhow.
    Just ordered a geobin for $35 on Amazon. The wire I have been using in my bin is about 20 years old and every time I open and move it, It bites me.
    I like the round bin system over stationary bins, I can mix the materials inside and outside in much easier.
    One thing I have always done is cover with a tarp to help keep the moisture in and too much moisture out. With all this dry weather, I think I will have to water my leaf mold pile, no rain over 1/4" since May 4th.
    Enjoy your videos! Stay Well !!!

      I have my original galvanized wire bin from 3-4 years ago. It’s bigger than this one so it’s a bit of a pain using it. I was just looking and seen the geobin for $35.99 on Amazon. Tarps definitely help to keep moisture in or out. I may need to think about that in its current location. My pallet bin and where this one used to be was a bit more in the shade. Thanks Brian, have a great day.

      I started a pile last Saturday, had so much garden and kitchen waste had to use it. I just made a pile on a tarp. One thing I wrote in the comment you did not see is, resting compost can be a magnet for jumping worms. I know there are heavy populations in parts of the east coast, so it might be worth checking with your DNR to find out if they are in your area. I got extremely lucky the jumping worms did not find my resting compost last year.
      Stay Well, and thanks for the heads up on the geo bin!!!

      @@brianseybert2189 I keep an eye out for them. A friend has them on the other side of town. Hoping to keep them away from my garden. Glad you were able to pick up a geobin to try. I think you will like it. 😁

      @@GardeningwithBarchuckin I have several videos out on their identification at different life stages.
      The biggest thing is not to draw them into your garden. Like unprotected resting compost or a leaf mold bin.
      You should think about at least putting down a tarp or some extruded landscape fabric below any resting compost. Jumping worms do not need a mate to reproduce, 1 jumping worm can turn into dozens.
      Keeping them out is a lot easier than dealing with them.

    That's a cool compost system for someone who needs portability or an easy build. Crazy weather all across the continent, Rick! We've had one significant rain in over two months and even that was less than half an inch.

      I really like the geobin. It goes together pretty easy by comparison to some systems. I have another one in my shed and gave one to my brother. .25” for about 40 days. Last Monday we got over 3.5” of rain. Which is too fast for it to soak into the extremely hard ground.

      Wow. Even your rainy island is in a drought. Gardener Scott said on last Monday's live stream he has been getting lots of rain which is unusual for Colorado Springs. It's like we are in backwards land. 😀

    • @NanasWorms
      @NanasWorms Рік тому +1

      Actually, Victoria gets very little total rain (18-25 inches/year depending on what part you live in). We live in one of the driest parts. Summers are the dry months and October-April are when most of that precipitation falls. Also, we don't get big rainstorms usually, more like the sky dribbles down moisture instead of steady rain. So we have watering restrictions all summer, which makes gardening a challenge!

      I loved how the worms looked. Got cooking even using city water. So that shows moisture is better than no moisture when making compost. Since I flipped the pile, my buddy at work has given me 4 more 5 gallon bucket of coffee grounds. I used the tumble weed tonight and watered in with rain water. In 10 minutes went from 120 to 130, I’m thinking it might hit 150 or higher by tomorrow.

    Nice composting system and even better getting it at a discount from your local extension office. I don’t see many worms in my soil. Can I just buy worms and add them to the garden?
    Thx for sharing 🪴

    • @GardeningwithBarchuckin
      @GardeningwithBarchuckin  Рік тому +1

      Sorry for long comment. It’s worth while checking on your local extension office, they partner with many organizations and can offer big discounts. Do you have a compost pile on the ground? Or do you trench compost? If not I would suggest one of these first. Personally, I would not suggest buying worms and release them outside, but there is nothing wrong if that is what you decide to do that. It can be expensive. Many people have purchased and released worms into there garden and compost areas. At least if you do decide to purchase some worms I know your climate is good for there survival. And remember worms that you would purchase, red wigglers or European night crawlers are composting worms. They do not burrow into the ground deep they stay in the top few inches of mulch or compost. So if excessive heat or drought, it can hurt your worm population. All I did was build the pile and the worms came (it was like field of dreams). When I purchased my worms for inside, I got them from Northeast Worms 1 pound for around $55. I haven’t looked recently but I would assume that all prices are higher than this now. There are many different suppliers out there, I would lean to stay away from none reputable or quick pop up worm farmer. Just a few off the top of my head would be northeast worms, uncle Jim’s, the garden and worm lady, meme worms, and a new one is pachamama worms.

    Love my Geobin, heading into the second year of using it. Is this the bin you put a PVC pipe into. I will be flipping mine soon. I started it about 4 months ago, and add as I go along. I plan to use the finished compost at the bottom of the pile. Do you see any issue with my plan?

    • @GardeningwithBarchuckin
      @GardeningwithBarchuckin  6 місяців тому

      Yes, I change it up, so sometimes the pvc is in and sometimes it’s out. But typically in late fall/early winter I like to put the pvc into the center of the pile to help to increase the amount of air into the middle and bottom of the pile. Your plan sounds good to me. As you dig around the bottom I would just pull any larger pieces out of the compost you plan on using and add the big pieces back to the pile.

They were in my other compost pile that I wanted to add to this pile, I didn’t realize there were so many worms were throughout the compost, just threw them back in the broke down compost and left the piles separate. I could of left them but they would’ve left the pile while it was heating up and then would of went back to it once it cooled down some. Thanks for the question
