- A side by side comparison of two amazing cello plugins and one “eh” cello plugin just for kicks. Please excuse the clipping and my speech. I think with my hands.
I am using Logic Pro X and reviewing Vienna Instrument’s Solo Cello and Cinesample’s Tina Guo Legato Cello. I hope you enjoy this.
Please let me know how I can improve these reviews, or what you would like to see in the future. Thank you!
Great review! I may be biased but I say Tina Guo library! RoboGuo
Thank you! I think it has a really great sound, definitely more natural sounding that others.
hey wait............its you! gimme your autograph! lol
Hahaha! Tricksy Tina. :p I was moments away from buying the Tina Guo one, but when I heard about the delay it just... yeah. And the reason for why I was looking for a Cello VST was for that very reason. >.
Hey Tina, I'm using your sound actually, but I found some difficult in getting used to the operation itself. You know, when I play a little fast, there was some kind of sound clipping or sound dropping. I checked my computer and no error was found. Could you please leave me some tips, thank you ?
We are in the presence of a goddess 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Beautiful with the VSL Cello. Lovely song too, by the way. Very nice. Excellent work.
Thanks for a great review. I'm downloading the Tina Guo Cello now. BTW, that was a really pretty piece of music you wrote.
Great job with your review, very helpful, thanks!
Breathtaking piece of music 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tina without a doubt! And now with Tina2 it’s even better! Thank you for the demo!
This review is as helpful today as it was years ago. And prices have come down so much over the years. Tina going for $50 and well worth it.
That's a Beautiful piece Right there
I bought the Tina Guo after watching the Cinesamples demo but found, like yourself that the attack is a bit too slow but the sound is really nice. great work. Thanks
Thank you for that presentation.
Lovely version of Marta Keen's Homeward Bound. Sounds great with a cello!
Very insightful in pointing out the differences between the different products. I appreciated how you were able to demonstrate the differences between the products. You just saved me $700 in experimentation. Thanks!!!!
The Guo Cello sounds much more realistic then the VSL one. As for the attack problem, I have the same with some of the Embertone instruments, fixing it with the Delay set to a negative value fixes this but its not nice to play live. Thanks for the video!
I haven't been able to find that parameter on this plugin. I just end up dragging the MIDI data slightly to the left of the time grid to compensate for the lag. Thanks for commenting!
Great video! Thank you..
Cinesamples is known for slow attack times. They've included in some libs a controller for moving the attack time forward or backwards. Perhaps the Tina Guo lib has that? My favorite legato Cello for playability is the LASS FC Cello. That thing nearly plays itself. The new Spitfire Artisan Cello seems to be very playable and in the performance patch the articulations are controlled by velocity and dynamics. Congrats on your videos.
I'm a cellist. Tina Guo plugin sounds the best to me, but nothing beats the real thing.
Actually, just about anything does if you're a poor player haha.
In my experience, you can keyswitch between the legato and sustain banks for the Tina Guo cello. That can add a more natural playing feel, but requires more technical effort. The Vienna Solo Cello seems to handle faster/arpeggiated notes better though.
I haven't started using the Tina Guo Cello yet, it's still downloading.....but I think I can explain the delay. Cinesamples- I have pretty much everything of theirs- tend to include the entire sample. That is to say, the sample begins from the very moment of sound production. This includes a fraction of a moment before the sound 'gets going'. So it's more realistic, but can be problematic when you need things to sound exactly on the beat. Their other String libraries have a control where you can tell it to play each sample from a point slightly after the beginning. I don't know if this exists in this library. If not, you can possibly do the same adjustment within Kontakt, or tell your your DAW to play everything on this track around 50ms early.
Well, that was depressing. I'm just starting to learn to make computer music, and the only "cellos" I have in my instrument library sound like kazoos compared to these plugins. :(
Depressing or not, I like your videos. They're well done, and I'm learning a lot. Thanks!
Regarding the transitions on the VSL notes, assigning expression(which is just volume, I think) to the same controller as velocity crossfade, might help with the smoothness of the transition. Right-click on both parameters and then physically move the controller and they will both assign to it. Nice view, thanks.
Which of these is the least demanding on the computer (e.g., ram usage etc)?
Hi, I am thinking about downloading the Cinesamples Tina Guo library. Could you tell me more about the "Kontakt" system I see you have integrated in with Garageband? Does the "Kontakt" player come with the library download? Thanks.
suggestion: if the timing problem in tina guo is constant, try tracking it like you would play it, and then compensate the delay by nudging the midi track, or doing a predelay on that midi channel.
Btw I think that the clicking and crackle is a latency issue.
What's your thoughts on the Cello within East West?
Tina Guo Cello sounds the best!
Do you ever use velocity xfade? I find better control over dynamics realtime
Ok so my question is. If you're primarily going to program your cello parts (not play live)... would you still choose Vienna over Tina?
Or Tina since you can program your parts a tad early to compensate for the lag?
In defense of the VSL cello you must control or edit the attack and release and sometimes expression and the expression filter to get a more natural sound. However, that is by design. VSL libs aren't meant so much for playability (some are), but they're meant for people who know how to edit after note entry. You can make VSL sound "perfect" but you need to commit to editing. Listen to the demos on their site. I'm VSL certified, btw.
***** How do you get the different dynamics to merge into one another the way you find it in other sample libraries? You can clearly hear the distinction between mp, mf, and f.
A quality reverb and a little eq on the Vienna would warm it up, moving it much closer to the Tina Guo sound.
Have you checked out Emotional Cello? I think it beats all three of these by far. But I must say the Tina sample is great for it to be 100$. I mean, for lovey touchy tempo rubato and anything below 70, the patch is a go getter. Thanks for sharing
Is there anything as warm and legato as Tina Guo for Viola and Violin?
by the way, in Ableton Live when I play a cello I set it up in piano to get a perfect attack and then give it a -350 to a -450 Track Delay and it solves that latency problem
+Daniel Manahan Go to Embertone's web site. They have all 3 instruments. Samplemodeling are coming up with a viola so my guess is that they're embarking on the solo string journey, but so far it's their only one. I'd give a slight realism advantage to Embertone. But if you ever look for a double bass, I have no solution so far. I guess VSL would be the best bet.
I'm trying Garritan Personal Orchestra's solo cello, but cello 1 and cello 3 are not accept,I only use solo cello 2,its sound is balance than other 2,I didn't adjust them to accept, cello 1 's sound out of balance more, so sad for it.Or because GPO is cheaper?
Hi, what MIDI controller are u using?
Yeah there's a lag.. That's how Tina Guo plays, her tempo is a bit slower but expressive and still fits in every sheets like magic. Maybe it takes some time to learn it.
Is that an arrangement of Homeward Bound you found or did you write it yourself? It's really nice.
Tina Guo's sounds great for sure . What is your controller please ? looking great !
Hi Ruben, thanks for the great and informative video! I am also flashed by the sound and expression of the Guo Cello Legato Patch and I am thinking about purchasing it. Only the point of the attack delay gives me some doubts... Did You also check out the Blakus Solo Cello by Embertone? The demos sound beautiful as well and it has more articulations than just legato. I am torn between those two Celli.
I have used the Blakus Solo Cello. I absolutely hate it. It sounds too clean and polished, and the vibrato is not natural sounding. That's one of the complaints I had with the Vienna Cello. It's too perfect. Besides, the Blakus Cello is a memory hog. That being said, you will always find something you hate about each library.
hifimidi So the answer is to have several libraries and to compose music that 'plays' to their collective strengths and avoid writing music that shows up their weaknesses, which by spreading the risk so to speak, should not limit one's compositional options too greatly. Surely we are in a better position than many Classical composers?
What did you use for shaker roll?
What PNO are you using for this piece? Also what shakers are you using? They sound really good
jeremy jeffers PNO=piano? I'm using TrueKeys American D based on a Steinway. My shaker is from Toontrack's Latin Percussion library.
hi there I have logic pro but not sure I have Kontakt whereas I have seen it works with Kontakt only ... can u shed a light on this please :)
You mean, the Tina Guo Cello? If you do not have it, if you buy it, it will work with the free version, which you can download from Native Instruments.
how did you learn how to make music ?
Tina guo WINN♥️
no compatisons from the Tina Guo Cello vst, i see, there is probably some delay on attack but having familiarity it is compensable, specialy when programming. The sound is realistic and beautiful, the others, sounds synthetics...
I think that the winner would be a cello programmed like VSL and sounding like Tina Guo. I have the same delay problem. But the delay issue can be solved through midi programming and using an apropriate notation technique. Tina Guo is no way a vst instruments for live performance. But it can do a great job for recordings if programmed properly.
+Sylvester-The Piano Man I agree. I hope VSL updates their string library, because the expression--especially the transition between dynamics--needs to be fixed.
16:00 ...RIP headphones listeners
the best videos on youtube. very helpful stuff ;) (Y)
especially the midi guitars-realistic playing tutorial :D kinda forgot the title
^^^^^^^^^^^^^ everyone check the video ^^^^^^^^^^
I personally liked the legato in the Vienna cello best. The Tina Guo had too much reverb, and there was a noticeable echo when switching between notes.
Aside from legato, I feel like double stops should also be demo'd, as those are pretty important in Cello writing.
Hello and thank you for this video. Ever tried Embertone's Blakus cello?
+800pieds I have. I found the vibrato to be too perfect and unnatural. The quality of the sample is top-notch, and I think it has great features. As someone said before, VSL has better control and flexibility, but doesn't have the best sample. Tina Guo has the best sample, but not the best flexibility. I haven't found one I absolutely love. I didn't get to use Blakus Cello that much, though. I should try it out again.
+hifimidi Would you say VSL is playable live? Blakus has a scripted vibrato so I guess it's why you're saying it sounds unnatural. You can also do it yourself with the pitch wheel and if you're subtle enough, I think it may sound more natural.
+800pieds It's definitely playable live, but it would probably sound best hidden behind the mix a little because the dynamic transitions are too obvious, whereas newer plugins sound smoother going from piano to forte. VSL needs to update their stuff.
You should totally check out Emotional Cello by Harmonic Subtones. It's the greatest of all time.
There have been a number of library vendors catching up on solo strings. Cinesamples just released their solo strings bundle, which sound amazing and playable. It takes decisions for you, which you may like or not. Sample Modeling also released their cello in the past month. Bohemian Cello from Virharmonic runs on UVI and the demos are yummy as well. But yes, Emotional Cello sounds great.
You need to increase your buffer size
or use VEP6.
do i need to lestn music theory to make that kinda music ?
take a few piano lessons.
which piano vst are you using?
I don't remember. Probably Ravenscroft 275 or Ivory 2: Grand Pianos
They should have made 2 legato patches on Tina Guo, one for soft pieces (this one) and one for fast ostinato like pieces
DesoloZ Yeah, also I was hoping to go higher in pitch
Out of the box, I'd say Tina Guo sounds best. Just add a negative delay to the track (most DAWs can). As a VSL user I must say VSL can sound better, but with more work.
Good advice!
What midi controller you use ?
+LeoMadiñá In this video I was using the Novation SL MKII. But I have since sold it and purchased an AKAI MPK88.
Very helpful. However, I think the problems you are experiencing with the Tina Guo cello may be due to inadequate computer power (chip, RAM) and to your latency settings (buffer settings) in Logic Pro X. I have the same problem but need to upgrade my computer!
+turkmusik It's definitely not a computer issue. I have a MacBook Pro Retina with 16GB of RAM, 2.6GHz Quad-Core i7, and 512GB SSD. It wasn't the buffer setting, either. It was Kontakt. I updated it and re-installed Tina Guo and have not had issues.
I know some sample library makers try to preserve the realism by keeping the delay that a real instrument would have. Note transitions aren't typically instant. Also since you made this video have you checked out Embertone's solo cello? I'm a big fan of their solo string instruments, but I feel the cello is the weakest in their lineup.
Oh I see you have a video on it :)
The Tina Guo library had me in bits; do they make a violin legato library? Re: delay, increase system RAM? re the first library you try, the Digital Sound Factory solo cello is better! And that is 50 bucks for the entire orchestra Reason Refill !!
Cinesamples doesn't make a solo violin sample library to my knowledge. I have now been using Tina Guo Legato for several months and have to say that I hate it. It's buggy. I've reinstalled it several times and the legato scripting doesn't work. I hope they fix it. Definitely not worth $100 anymore in my opinion.
That IAC, tho.
Awesome.
I think the Tina Guo cello has too much reverb and/or ambience.
Moreover it has too much portamento. Portamento should only be used sparingly for it
to sound authentic. I think the Vienna Cello is the best.
i use Tine Cello its great but its latency aint that great, and its not the computer its the plugin
I hear Bonnie Raitt I cant make you love me. Nice info thou.
Y don't you try LASS string?
I have LASS lite, but not the full version. This was just for solo string. Maybe I'll ask if I could review the full version.
+hifimidi I think u should try the full version. Last month audiobro offered around US200 upgrade from lite version to 2.5 full version.
The Vienna Solo Cello sounds 'synthy' to me.
Check out Best service's emotional cello on UA-cam. It's the best cello library in my opinion
Vienna to me is the best
Can I have this song!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASSSSSSSE
+Joshua Jordin It's called Homeward Bound (not the movie).
Tina Guo vsti vol. 1. & 2. in real action: ua-cam.com/video/o5LCAsPyFHo/v-deo.html
Personally to me, none of them sound good. I think the Blakus beats them all
Tina Guo is the best, but unfortunatly partially totall out of tune... I can't use it on some of my songs and in my view that really is eomthing that should not happen on a libary... but it doesnt seem like ther eis going to be a fix of the issue..
Well, for now, it's 49 bucks.
Watt
Tina Guo is best but the timing is terrible for the plugin, ive experienced this myself
Vienna does not sound fake to me but it is about taste
VSL if for those that KNOW their Programming.. not for hobbyists.
Tina Gou soa um pouco mais realista!!
I think the Tina Guo delay problems makes it almost unusable. Your demo at the end was not good (not your problem !!)
Right. I do not use it anymore. Even with their update. Waste of money.
Tina Guo is so much better- sounds much more realistic, the vibrato on the VSL is too repetitive
tina guo... too much reverb... :(
Nothing special lol, then it sounds better than my neighbor who plays in the city orchestra
They sound so fake
am i the only one that thinks that vienna instruments sounds like shit?
Vienna does not sound fake to me but it is about taste
