- Snapchat, the popular image sharing social media platform, has only been around for a few years, but the technology to digitally take a photo and send it has existed for at least thirty years.

running in the 80's
running in the 80s... its the way i want to be
Imagine if there was actually smartphones and Snapchat in the 80s. Imagine someone with a new 5 foot tall curly hairdo making a duckface
We still live in the 80s, just with smartphones and good computers
@@rintogbiabiagsnd7871 and Ronald Reagan
Wow even back in the 80s Snapchat was more compatible with apple.
Dennis Fluttershy The comment isn’t null it’s comedy.
The Commodore Amiga series would have been miles better for this task. the Apple 2GS didn't have capable fast chipsets, numerous amounts of Genlock/video digitizer/ picture editing software options or a fast enough CPU in comparison
But the defining feature of snapchat, that the image is automatically deleted after a few seconds is unlikely to be popular when it takes several minutes to download it in the first place. I remember in the early '90s if I had downloaded a somewhat large image I would treasure it (probably copy it to a floppy since HD space was limited) even if it weren't specially good, just because I'd spent so much time waiting for it to download.
But we *did* edit and share images in the 80's. That's what uu encoding on bulletin boards was for. Each image was converted into ASCII, split into a half dozen or so messages, and glued back together again by hand to feed into uudecode.
Taking minutes or hours to get a picture wasn't an issue. I once setup a QuickKeys macro to keep pressing "Y" all night to download MacinTalk through a pager. Then I used Find&Replace to remove all the "Press 'Y' to continue..." and decoded it, and it worked!
When I saw that Finnish ski jumping team video, I legit laughed even though I have seen it like 10 times now
The Amiga would have been a better machine to base this around, it could have done all 3 easier and better.
64 likes, kind of fitting for a Commodore.
let's keep it that way
yes, and there was already appropriate hardware

internetperson TV why remove the likes? people can just bring it up to 128.

Thanks for the heads up on SquirrelMonkey.
Snapchat in medieval times
Painting basically and sending them by foot to friends

You could take a photo with a Sony Mavica.
Remove the floppy disk.
Put it inside your computer and Viola.
Your photos are digitally inside your computer.
You have a UniDisk 3.5 and an Apple IIGS - that's fantastic!
Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that Sending a Picture would have been done via a BBS in a file upload? Since Snapchat is Internet based, the closest thing available would have been a BBS, maybe converting it to ASCII Art? Still, nice video.
I can't be the only one who sang the title to the tune of Running in the 90s
Been on the internet since late 90's
Still no idea why people use Snapchat.
Actually I don't even have an idea of what the hell snapchat does, taking pictures, edit them? send them to other people? I can already do that with Whatsapp / Telegram / G+ and other stuff.
> Doesn't know what it does.
> Says what they know can do it better.
Hey, why are you watching UA-cam? Renting VHS gets images to my screen just fine!
The last sentence was purely hypothetical has highlighted by the question marks, it was like "Assuming this, then that".
Also never claimed anything about doing things better.
It's mostly the speed, chat and disappearance
When you take a low-quality photo and send it to someone on a messaging platform, it'll stay there
When you send it on Snapchat, it's there only for a few seconds
It also makes it incredibly easy to share your day with others
Alex Mc There are cool filters and you can easily see what your friends are up to. It’s good for saving pictures, editing them, you can make stickers, FaceTime, chat, and it’s fast and in a single app. That’s why it’s so popular.
Dennis Fluttershy its all in one app though. I think it’s a good app.
This was awesome!
the GS was a beast, what a nice and underrated computer
Beautiful video!
65k subscriber special coming?
cant wait for it
I see what you did there... Cant wait for it!
Same with me! I love the series
That video scanner card sounds like it was meant to be paired with a Mavica or Canon RC analog floppy camera.
Oh my goodness ...
*YOU STILL HAVE A ROTARY PHONE !?*
Stop making me feel old, dammit.
lol
it went from 1990's to 1980's to 1970's at the end.
I literally just started watching Wonders of the World Wide Web like 5 hours ago
lol, the original video was in my recommended today and then someone said you talked about it.
I have to Say, editing Windows vista stock photos (plus bliss!) on an Apple iigs from the 1980s has to be the coolest thing ever.
I'm just snapchatting in the 90's!
Actually Snapchat works best with Macintosh but until in 1999 when they released the new version that works best with Windows 95 and 98.
3:50 Nice Easter Egg with the QR Code
The Bliss of drinking coffee... staring at the screen (80s)
i still don't get the whole point of snapchat. to me it is a program people use to send stuff that gets deleted as soon as it is looked at. i have no use and can think of no reason to use something like that now. if something is worth sending it is worth keeping then. there are a lot of other ways to send stuff that are better too to me. i will never understand the big deal with this.
translation: i have no friends to use snapchat with and therefore cannot empathize with those that do, so i will r/lewronggeneration myself alone in my cold, dark, lonely room
It's like Instagram but more candid. I don't have to think "is this good enough to post?"
I do get the concept of being like a point in a conversation that is relevant to just that moment, but I see no appeal in actually using it either. I don't know of anyone I know uses it as no one I know ever seems to talk about it. Probably just not so popular in this part of the world I am in.
To be honest half the people I know who use it take more pictures of the floor than anything else. Snap Chat must have a lot of data about floors lol.
comradeRosa wtf that is so mean
i thought this was a squirrelmonkey video and i got confused when your logo came up
per same
That mouse sensitivity...
3:51 QR code says "65k Subscriber Special Coming Soon..."
ACK! I was watching Wonders of the Worldwide Web a few hours ago! What are the odds?
Wonders of the World Wide Web being mentioned by another UA-camr brings a smile to my face.
2:28 thats actually my current desktop background
This is so cool
noticed that ceefax music... good choice
could i use part of this i s a educational video?
Hey Science Elf! I was wondering if you have a business email I can reach you on?
Great video
There's one problem here.
People in the 80s had taste and wouldn't use such a program.
People in the 80s had taste... Uh, have you seen 80s fashion? It's the most gaudy decade ever.
Taste. That’s funny.
ok now this is epic
65k Subscriber Special Coming Soon...
I love easter eggs, especially during easter
The Amiga would be far better than that Apple crap. Scan photo in ham mode (4096 colours with a perceivable 262000 with software optimisation), Edit in Dpaint 3 or similar, upload using one of the many comms programs available. For animation theres fantavision or dpaint among others. For video there were quite a few digitisers available. So yeah, Amiga for the win..
meetoo594 I don't understand why he didn't include the Mavica.
It would've been easier to capture photos that way and transfer them.
@mirek: First Mavica was early 90`s wasnt it? I guess you would need crossdos as well.
As an aside, I used one of the first Apple digital cameras at a very short lived job I had in the printing industry. It was unbelievably bad for the price the company paid, they would have been better off just taking 35mm photo`s and digitising em with an Amiga but for some stupid reason they had to use Apple equipment.
meetoo594 The first Mavica that was available for the public to buy, was actually the MVC-A7AF.
It was released circa 1986/87.
Analog onto 2 inch video floppies.
meetoo594 Well of course those Apple cameras were bad.
If they made their cameras out of something besides apples, maybe it would have been better.
All jokes aside, I feel sorry that you had to go through that.
Cripes that camera is expensive to buy now. NTSC still frames recorded onto floppy like the worlds smallest VHS tape. I wonder if theres a way to read those disks without the player add-on and a digitiser?
Hey, you got a cameo appearance in "Twitch in the 80's"
What if instead the photo manipulation was done on a server-end and not an attachment? I know the WWW didnt exist in the 80s, but what if?
Amiga.
5:41 the date in the video is saying that it's an april fool
There's a sort of hidden QR code in the video and if you scan it, it says *65k Subscriber Special Coming Soon.*
This video was made a few months ago but still.
But if the image doesn't delete itself, how is this "Snapchat in the 80s" and not "Flickr in the 80s" or something? It's not the case, that we didn't send pictures over the internet before snapchat!
Is that ad for Snapchat?
Oh hell yea. The IIGS ... my 1986 wiafu ... I mean ... I really loved the system ... first real GOOOEY ...
Snapchat in flintstone land
3:49 what does that qr code link to?
I think DEmake, where a guy recreates games on older hardware, is stealing the show
Cool!
QR code says...
65k Subscriber Special Coming Soon...
My goodness Snapchat could have existed in the 1700’s.

Does somebody know how to imitate the effect of the demade photos ???
You know...
It would be easier for Caveman to use Snapchat.
They should’ve made reddit in the 70s, like for universities.
I thought this was one of them :( You trolled me :
I am sure some ultra nerd back in the 90s did this
It doesn't disappear after some time
Thats mostly done server-side I think, the app obviously deletes after a time but that's easily bypassed by screenshotting the (probably sexual) picture. Any 80`s bulletin board could automate the deletion and probably handle deleting off the users machine as well if it used a dedicated program to access the service.
Jeez it took all of that to post one little snapchat post????!!!!!

Hi! I really lik eur videos an dthat an dhave been watching u for a long time now. But can u please do a face reveal. Please!!
.
This triggers me because I sold my GS for next to nothing but I'll come out of my nerd regret safe space and force my non nerd room mate to watch it with me, sometimes he's interested. He had an Amiga as a kid, should have kept that shit!
Please don't use the word "trigger" like that. It's a legitimate medical term, and when it's misused like that it causes a lot of misinformation and ignorance about the illnesses it's used with. Instead, say that it annoys you, or pisses you off.
they're just stuffing the comment with buzz words, frankly
