@@vaderladyl A few yrs. ago I even read on some scented wall plug ins that it is harmful to pets. We need to be mindful when we're using scents of any sort around the home if you have any kind of pet living with you. Even floor liquid cleaners and carpet cleaners can be too much for them. And cigarette smoke too! A friend's dog and cat vomited every time she cleaned her floor with Pine Sol. No wonder! Same thing each time she cleaned her carpets. She finally listened to me and went with pet friendly cleaning products.
Kim Karsashians home is super minimalistic and she recently put up a tour of her Skims office and it is perfect. NOTHING OUT OF PLACE. EVERYTHING CREAM. Makes me feel I can't drop a crumb, touch the books, or really even sit. It's uninviting bc it's so perfect. She has kitchens but doesn't even seem like they are usable.
I was in the store yesterday and one of the employees had just finished straightening all the potato chip bags so neatly that I didn't dare take one anymore :D
Her home , just like on " fixer upper " shows & magazines , etc. is staged . No one wants to show dirty dishes on the kitchen counter or jackets & backpacks on the mudroom floor to the viewers of the world ! 🙂
Too minimalistic is bleak and inhospitable. The Kardashians also now have the money to hire cleaners. If either of the Kardashian's were regular working class people, whatever they'd live in, would more than likely not be as clean, etc.,
If I had housekeepers every week, my home would look different too, but when your it and you have do it ALL..........nah.........go away.......it's clean enough:)
We installed curtains in our home and it completely changed the feel and look, to the point where it felt like a different house, in a good way. We built our home with my mother and father in law and have bamboo, laminate and tiles and while the flooring may seem cold we do offer our guests slippers which helps to make our home more inviting. I recently updated our entry and it feels much more cosy and welcoming. We actually used an old piece of furniture we were going to donate but once we moved it into the entry on the way out of the house it became an entryway cabinet and it now looks really beautiful. Lovely tips and they do make such a difference. I may need to relax on the cleaning 😂
I always learn so much from your videos! I’ve been able to look with new perspective at my home and make some positive needed decor changes to update my pad. Thank you!
You mention scent often, and I started focusing on scent with diffusers from one of your older videos! Nothing fake/ fruity/floral smelling. More woodsy & I love coming home! Thx!
Re odors. Lots of ways to address without scents: WASH your curtains, couch upholstery, rugs. De-clog drains you don’t even think need to be dealend, put baking soda in your refrigerator. Wash your oven throw out old carpets, clothes, or anything else that has just accumulated your human smell too long. Wash your pets at least twice a month-ignore vets who say that isn’t necessary. It isn’t for their health. It is if you don’t want to smell like a vet. Wash dog leashes and collars. Cook with a window open. I do like the use of air fresheners, but particularly the clean linen fragrance. A small trick you can do before company: boil some water with your favourite air freshener or even cologne/perfume, or just a lot of lemon juice, and it will fill the air. Let it vent a few minutes before guests arrive. Similar to baking cookies.
For me the most inviting is the general atmosphere of a home. It gives me a more intimate account of who these people really are, as individuals and/or a family or a community. I prefer cossines to strictness even if that means my kitchen doesn't look perfect when my best friends stop for quick coffee. On the other hand I love to decorate my home for special occasions, holidays and even just in general, redecorating. Different lighting options, colors, fabrics and pattern, rugs, plants and flowers... Bring it on! ^^ Combined with lots of natural light and a good airflow, all I need is some nice art , music and scents (candles, incense). If it's possible I'd prefer a good location and outside architecture but I think I appreciate a good space solution even better. As of most univiting mistakes people make in their homes I'd have to say are bad smell, clutter, garbage and mouldy bathroom hand towels. The mouldy hand towel is my limit :D Posh Pennies thank you for this video. Best of luck!
I am always so worried that I have becomed nose blind to the smell of my 2 dogs and cat! I open windows all over the house every day, try to have fresh lilys by the door and clean the floors to make sure I can reduce that as much as I can. It can be hard though, especially when your pets start getting older and health issues start to appear
Yes, I love opening up the house to air out, it's the best at keeping any smells at bay! Just wanted to share a word of caution though, be careful of lilies around pets, I know they are very toxic to cats, possibly dogs too, but cats for sure.
Lilies are toxic to cats! Like can cause fatal liver damage within a couple days if they rub against the plant or get the pollen on them, let alone if they eat it. Please choose another flower!
@@frangipanisandgirl Oh! I had no idea, thank you so much! They haven't been sick so far, they don't really have access to chew on them or anything like that, but better safe than sorry. I'll switch to other cut flowers :)

I have a lovely friend whose house is a little disheveled but inviting mostly. I couldn't put my finger on what was still making me feel uncomfortable. I realized there are lots and lots of rustic solid wood pieces and fixtures, which I like for quality's sake, but it makes everything feel hard and cold. My other friend's house makes you think they are still moving in. Nothing on the white walls, kids toys inside closed clear plastic totes on an industrial-looking shelf, perfectly separated, very clean technically, but the kitchen is always untidy, when I visit. It feels like a "just business" kind of environment, which can happen when you're trying to keep a house clean and minimal with 3 kids. I like to think I have a nice balance.
I’m limited to opening my windows frequently, because I have horrible seasonal allergies. The pollen is very high where I live. I hate it when my house smells like food, except a fresh bakery. So, we got an air purifier. It’s been game changing. Not only does it help my allergies, but it makes my house smell like almost nothing. Once in a while, I’ll get someone visiting saying my home still smells like a new build. My home is 3 years old now.
This is awesome! I have always loved your content. Very insightful. Can you recommend few items you mentioned? I know your blog does have few things but any additional recommendations would help. Glad I'm learning from the best 😊
Smells are such a huge thing for me. It can really make or break an experience when visiting someone. I remember when we were buying a home, there was one house that had been sprayed with so much Fabreeze that I could barely walk through the entire house. I don't even remember what the house had looked like. Smells are so important. In the Fall and Winter, I like to make a simmering stove top potpourri. It's so pleasant and so simple!
My husband sprays Febreze in the bathroom and it gives me a huge headache. It is a neurotoxin. I open windows when he does it and we always have an issue. Just awful. He sprays like the guy in the commercial. I have shown him online info it is toxic but he won't stop.
Sometimes I ferment buckwheat groats to make bread, and oh boy, that can stink up my home!! The whole downstairs can smell like a giant fart after a day and half of fermentation. But sometimes I make soap, which makes my house smell really nice. I just don’t open the windows often due to living on a busy highway near a gas station.
Add a beautiful huge historic art print, such as one by the pre-Raphaelite painters to contrast with the minimalist decor. These paintings are rich in color and detail. Some of the scenes are homey, while others are romantic or historic moments. You will still have the benefits of minimalism, but you will add vivid color and unforgettable faces full of emotion or mystery.
My guest bedroom is almost as luxe as our main bedroom. I use bamboo linen and linen. I love making my guests feel like they are in a boutique hotel. I feel nobody should leave their home to come slum it out in mine.
I agree with the one about a house being TOO tidy. If it looks and feels like a museum or like a room that nobody ever uses, I don't feel relaxed there.
I'm confused, how did we go from entry way to people sleeping on our sheets? How about just get people in the door to visit for a couple of hours and they feel comfortable enough to want to come over again.
I actually find stone floors very cozy and comfortable. They do work well in warm climates as traditional designs prove. I did really appreciate all the other tips though!
What does too clean even mean? Clean is good. Dirty is gross. Sparse, plain, and minimal aren't the same as clean. Totally agree regarding guest room sheets (and for that matter, guest beds are usually substandard).
If someone is afraid to drop a crumb on the floor, the house is "too clean." A little mess and a dust bunny here or there isn't the end of the world. But yes, dirty is another issue entirely.
@@evelynsaungikar3553 yes! I often hear questions what cleaning products leave a strong smell for a long time? Why would you want your house to smell strongly of cleaning products? Let that fresh air in, get some roses or freesias or bake a cake!
A smell that took me awhile to figure out came from my three-quarter bath. I love tub baths and rarely use the shower. The smell emanated from the sewer line. A teakettle of hot water poured down the drain did the trick.
Silk sheets + pillow cases= slippin and slidin and scroopin. Mine aren't real silk tho so maybe I need higher quality stuff. I just wanted to use scroop in a sentence
Realtors, on Open House showings, often bake brownies or cookies for that inviting smell. Floral smells are subjective. But who doesn’t like the smell of warm chocolate (or “apple pie” by putting cinnamon and nutmeg in a small pot of water warming on the stove)?
I love houses that are like this. It is so nice to come back from work, open the door and be in a big room instead of a corridor for example. You are lucky 🙂
I don’t have a designated “entry way”either. I’m sure many of us in regular to smaller sized homes have the same where we just walk right into the living room. I still organize the shoes with a little shoe rack and have a cute rug at both sides of the front door. I have a large front porch though, so I like to include that in making it fee welcoming though. We can work with what we got 😉.
If it was up to me my whole home would be totally colored: I love how colors play off each other. I guess I like dramatic color. I'm working on my husband to "get" that!! Color is to me the number one thing in a home.
i disagree on being too clean is uninviting. what if thats really what you are. i think its very reasonable enough that when you have sudden visitors, you are not stressed out to organize things at home..clean means everything, it should never be an "uninviting approach" to a home.well just my opinion.
If I am visiting a home that is super clean, it makes me feel uncomfortable. Like my presence and fingerprints will ruin it. It’s like lounging in a museum or something. It’s an okay vibe for a hotel room, where housekeeping is quite literally being paid for, but not in a house.
Very nice video once more time. Thank you. I would like to see a video how to style a wall (1m) next to main entrance and that looks to the living room.:)
I'm starting a comment campaign to replace the fiddle-leaf fig ( a notoriously difficult plant to grow indoors) with the exquisite ficus alii (which does well indoors) as the next plant fad of interior designers.
Does a ficus drip sap ? I worked in a lovely upscale furniture store years ago & many accessories used for various room settings were our own "used" books , new magazines & live plants - there were a couple plants that were not " user friendly " - one shed leaves a lot & the other " dripped " a very fine mist-like sap .
There is actually a piece of furniture called a “hall stand” which is made as a drop zone but unless your house is traditional with antique furniture, it may not look right. Sferra is supposed to be one of the top companies for sheets. Their Giza 45 sheets are made from only the best Egyptian cotton but they are not cheap. There are light bulbs with a switch on the bulb that lets you change what the light looks like. You can get them at home depot. Then you don’t need smart phone apps, internet, etc.
You weren't kidding when you said the sheets are not cheap. I don't mind paying for higher quality bedding but $2200 for a single flat sheet? Yikes! Bet they feel nice though. I need to find sheets that are nice but a little more reasonable (>$500).
You can find great sheets that feel luxe on a budget for under $100 bucks. There is no need to spend enormous amounts of money for a clean, comfortable, yet beautiful home.
I had to take out some storage. I figured out any way that involved anything but kicking for shoes they weren’t going to get out away. So how I have a beautiful bench where everyone can kick shoes under. Thus I had to un-storage to get the shoes out of the way.
I actually cannot relax when my apartment is messy. I'm a neat, minimalistic person and will only feel good in almost hospital like, spotless interior....
I feel welcome in the most horribly designed space if the host was waiting at the door for me with a smile 😊. But yes, we must take care of these matters if we're serious about home design and entertaining.
Silk bedding? Who irons it for us? I don’t iron sheets. My son and daughter-in-law had the drop off zone for keys and wallet. Burglars broke in while they and their three daughters were asleep. The burglars robbed them and pinched my daughter-in-law’s new car. Hate curtains, (especially when the cat uses them for abseiling) but ‘man’ they can make a room look complete. Love the vessel behind you. Good video.
Loud ticking clocks, especially the ones that interrupt life every 15 minutes would be at the top of my list. Second would be competing noises i.e. the tv is on AND someone is watching a video on their phone. Third, creaking noisy beds. I guess I have noise issues.
I’m so comforted to read someone else has a hard time with ticking clocks. People are so proud of their cute retro-style alarm clocks or their beautiful antique floor clocks, so they put them in or near the guest rooms. Tick-tock-tick-tock-tick… I can’t.
One thing that’s frustrating about most design UA-camrs is assuming that everybody has a certain space. For example - not everyone even has an entry way. I don’t have a house. I live in an apartment. There is literally no entry way. You walk in and the living room is right there. It’s like if you don’t have a huge home, and you live in small apartments/studios, we often times do not know what to do with our spaces bc a lot of these design tips aren’t applicable to us. Even “decorating on a budget” is still too expensive for a lot of us.
Ohmygosh, I'm such a brat! I spoil all five bedrooms with great quality bedding. If the people sleeping in the beds aren't cozy they won't get a great night's sleep.
The worst ever bad smell is cat boxes. I have a cat and I’m obsessive about cleaning the box just because I can smell it on other peoples homes right away. Sometimes it’s pretty bad and it’s obvious owners can’t smell it anymore. Sometimes I can smell it on someone’s clothing or hair just because they live with them. Visiting with my husbands mom it’s so overwhelming I deep clean everything from my luggage as soon as I get home. I was like I swear the bedding smells like cat piss and we secretly rehashed everything but it was still there. Took me forever to figure out what the smell was since I never noticed a cat box anyplace.until last time. It’s in the laundry room. So apparently the smell gets into the wash and dryer and that was why the bedding smelled so so so unsleepable awful. Now I know to never ever keep my cat box in the laundry room or near an air vent.
I like this video but have to disagree with the idea of a minimalistic home as seeming too cold due to being too clean. I think the way you design and decorate can make a minimal home cozy by having natural elements such as plants and wood items and adding a nice throw, area rug and candles. Just my opinion :) I love a clean and tidy home and I am no way minimal but I have been decluttering and have been styling with the intent of creating a cozy atmosphere and also keep my coastal vibe I love.
yeah, mine as well. i keep my home minimal and clean. and i love the vibe.if this meant to be uninviting for others, then, i dont need for them to come over hahaha
@2:12 the chair to the left..wow!!! I’ve been searching online- tried: wood leather tufted woven chair with Ottoman… any idea of additional search terms to help?
Exactly! I have a very well designated and organized drop zone/ entry way, but my family always leaves stuff anywhere, specially in the middle of the living room 😬

I’d be afraid to eat anything. She might follow you around with the dust buster.
Thx!
I love linen! It’s weight, it’s coolness and awesome feeling!
I've heard lily is poisonous to cats so maybe check out which one you have and if it's safe for your cat to be around!
@@frangipanisandgirl Oh! I had no idea, thank you so much! They haven't been sick so far, they don't really have access to chew on them or anything like that, but better safe than sorry. I'll switch to other cut flowers :)
@@klaudiso Thanks so much for the advice! I'll check with my vet but in the mean time, I am switching to other types of cut flowers. Good vibes from Costa Rica!
Lots of great tips! Thanks for sharing!
It might still be offgassing and the smell is stuck inside 😳
What kind of air purifier do you have? I’m interested in getting one. Thanks.
This is awesome! I have always loved your content. Very insightful. Can you recommend few items you mentioned? I know your blog does have few things but any additional recommendations would help. Glad I'm learning from the best 😊
- "What makes your home uninviting?"
- "A panther."
Great example! 😊
100% cotton sheets are my favourite and I detest all microfibre bedding. I also sprinkle guest sheets with baby powder once the bed is made.
Try bamboo sheets, they’re excellent!
I love cotton. But no, thanks, on the baby powder.
Making you feel like yourself is key, not making everyone else like it. My home is clean and reasonably neat, but it reflects me.
I agree with the one about a house being TOO tidy. If it looks and feels like a museum or like a room that nobody ever uses, I don't feel relaxed there.
Is it bad that all the ultra minimalistic empty cold spaces look blissful to me? 😬
Well done on your lead in to your lily silk ad. Thank you.
Excellent advice like always! Thank you. I’m happy I got all covered in my flat.
The minimalist room made me smile . One chair , echoed by one wheelbarrow in the bare garden. Minimalist mirroring . Is it a thing ? 😆🤔
I'm confused, how did we go from entry way to people sleeping on our sheets? How about just get people in the door to visit for a couple of hours and they feel comfortable enough to want to come over again.
Paid sponsorship insert here :)
This list makes a lot of sense and I agree with it
I actually find stone floors very cozy and comfortable. They do work well in warm climates as traditional designs prove. I did really appreciate all the other tips though!
Simple common sense approach! Great 👍👍
The problem with minimalism is it makes it very clear that I am the only thing in the room that is out of place.
Weird how you consider yourself a "thing." 💀
Who does that?
What does too clean even mean? Clean is good. Dirty is gross. Sparse, plain, and minimal aren't the same as clean. Totally agree regarding guest room sheets (and for that matter, guest beds are usually substandard).
To me, 'too clean' means someone's house feels unlived in. Nothing out of place, and no clutter on the benches.
If someone is afraid to drop a crumb on the floor, the house is "too clean." A little mess and a dust bunny here or there isn't the end of the world. But yes, dirty is another issue entirely.
An overpowering smell of bleach is offputting.
@@evelynsaungikar3553 OMG yes. Cannot stand it myself.
Scroop is a fabulicious word!
Nah. I had real silk and I hated it for the same reasons you mentioned.
@@vaderladyl Good to know!!! Yeah, I stick to just a silk pillow case
What about the "apartment entries "? Can you do a video on this? Thanks 😊
Over minimalistic decor, agreed. So not inviting.
Realtors, on Open House showings, often bake brownies or cookies for that inviting smell. Floral smells are subjective. But who doesn’t like the smell of warm chocolate (or “apple pie” by putting cinnamon and nutmeg in a small pot of water warming on the stove)?
I love this channel, but am I the only one that doesn't have an entry way? You open my front door and whalaa.. you're in the living room.
I love houses that are like this. It is so nice to come back from work, open the door and be in a big room instead of a corridor for example. You are lucky 🙂
@@NydiaLC // well that makes me feel better. !!!! Thank you for your reply.
Many people. Usually in open plan spaces. More difficult to put stuff to decorate in there for sure, but not impossible.
I was thinking not everyone has an entryway! I hate houses/apartments that dont but not everyone feels that way! I hope you enjoy your house!
I think they mean to the point that people are uncomfortable there because they are afraid of making a mess and won't even sit on your living room.
Hi, great video. Where did you get that white lamp behind you? Thanks
I think she mentioned in another video that it was a thrift store find. 😊
Thank you. I would like to see a video how to style a wall (1m) next to main entrance and that looks to the living room.:)
i love your channel! good job
Candles are not for everyone, some are of us are sensitive to scents and don't want any scented things round!
I'm starting a comment campaign to replace the fiddle-leaf fig ( a notoriously difficult plant to grow indoors) with the exquisite ficus alii (which does well indoors) as the next plant fad of interior designers.
I remember when other kinds of ficuses where all the rage back in the 80's and 90's. That one you mention is a good one.
How about a monstera?
@@smack6030 There are. Good sheets can range from 50 to 100 dollars depending on some factors, and the chance of finding them on sale.
Love your channel❤️
Thanks for the tips!
Would you be kind to tell where you bought that beautiful black vase. Thank you.
Good ideas. I am going to use a drugstore scent to spray the room now.
A diffuser with natural oils is healthier for you. And the scents are much more pleasant.
Your video is great! Can I repost to another platform?
Nose blind= anosmic 😅
I like this video, so full of nice ideas!!❤
Great tips! Thanks! ♥
Can you link your lamp please? It’s gorgeous!
Expensive cotton percale sheets can last a decade or more, so they are more economical than many other sheets.
I hate led lights, even dimmed it just isn’t soft enough and always feels harsh
People rarely come over because of my dogs and my cat but that's another subject 🤷🏻♀ Great tips tho !
I find homes that have no plants extremely uninviting!
Totally, however not everyone is good at keeping them alive so it's understandable why they might not have any
I tried several times to keep them alive, they just tend to suicide with me
@@hanaafekry7661 same, but I keep trying anyhow
try ZZ plants.
I mostly have plants outdoors (lots) - other than at the holidays. Does a Christmas tree qualify as a houseplant?
If the people sleeping in the beds aren't cozy they won't get a great night's sleep.
ouuuuuu........I can name soooooo many houses😅
Great idea
If I sense my guests are uncomfortable, I always suggest a game of Twister, with my dogs.
For smell... ! I burn incense sticks , fresh flowers, home sprays, sometimes candles
I buy what I can afford and I don't care what kind of sheets YOU buy! My home IS inviting because I keep it clean, neat AND comfortable!!!
Alittle helpful hint - you're titles are always negative. How about "Making Your Home More Inviting" instead?
Nice entries. Mine is 3,5 by 5.
Wish they have duvet cover!
I think there are two kinds of minimalism: cozy minimalism and extreme minimalism, which can indeed feel cold.
@2:12 the chair to the left..wow!!! I’ve been searching online- tried: wood leather tufted woven chair with Ottoman… any idea of additional search terms to help?
Check West Elm and DWR
Search for Jean Gillon Jangada armchair. You might not like the prices, though. 🙈
You need to train your family member to use the drop zone, so good luck with that! 😅
Exactly! I have a very well designated and organized drop zone/ entry way, but my family always leaves stuff anywhere, specially in the middle of the living room 😬
Someone needs to make a scented candle called "Pot Roast".
Is this Lily silk cruelty free?
Silk is an inherent animal product. The alternative would be Satin.
@@FacelessandTwisted12 Cruelty-free silk is not a vegan fabric, but it's animal-friendly. Unlike traditional silk, silkworms are not killed in the process to make it. 🐛

Yeah me neither. Cotton or any other natural material is better for me.
