How To Compare Guitar Pickups - Kiesel, Seymour Duncan & Dimarzio

In this video I explain the method I like to use to A/B the sound of different pickups to hear the difference between them and figure out what I want to use in my own custom guitar with Kiesel.
My control guitar/pickup is a Kiesel Aries with their Lithium Pickups.
I test this against a Fender Strat using Seymour Duncan Hot Rails and also an Ibanez RG with a Dimarzio Air Norton in the neck and a Tone Zone in the Bridge.

Good video. Pickups can sound radically different even in the same model guitar. I had a Kramer Baretta that sounded great with a JB, but my friend had one that sounded terrible with a JB. Over the years I did land upon some pickups that I preferred to others, especially in certain types of guitars. As I mainly play strats which tend to be made of bright wood and prefer ebony or maple fretboards the DiMarzio Tone Zone has been my preferred pickup overall. For mahogany set necks I prefer the DiMarzio Norton or Super Distortion in the bridge.

Good point - too many times reviews demonstrate pickups but play different licks and riffs.

Tone is important though as it inspires you to play more... If you have a tone you don't like it won't make you want to play. The trick is to find a happy medium

Just got my new Kiesel with covered berylliums. I really dislike them, they lack articulation and dynamics compared to similarly wound Dimarzios or Duncans. The guitar plays and feels great, so after a pickup swap I think I'll be very happy.

I have a Kiesel CT6 with the Lithium humbuckers. I absolutely love those pickups (with both coils and coil tapped). Definitely hotter than the Burstbucker 1 and 2 in my Les Paul, but also more articulate and slightly brighter. The differences between the two guitars no doubt contribute to the character of the sound. Something to consider…
