A piece written by a virtuoso meant to be played by a group of virtuosi. Well done, NYPhilharmonic, Maestro Bernstein, and, of course, our Hostess, LucieV. I cannot believe there aren't more reactions videos to this rich, American composition. Thank you, Ms. L, for bringing this performance to a larger public!
Thank you for this reaction to my favorite piece of music since I first heard it 1963. I was a freshman in high school and would sneak behind the pipes to hear seniors practicing for their recital. They had an arrangement for piano and pipe organ. I remain mesmerized by it. Amazing to me that Bernstein is not only playing the piano, but conducting at the same time.
I'm 60 years old and that's what I remember wanting to play that was the most fun. I was only half good, so only half learned it the way you're supposed to. Pretty cool to create, play it and conduct it.
I'm 60 years old and this is my favorite song would I played the piano when I was learning it. Just brought back all that memories and that house with all the furnishing just with the song.😊
Lucie, you need to process the audio from your microphone with a de-esser plug-in because whenever you say a word with an S it sounds so harsh that it's ruining the music. Perhaps also lower the volume of your voice just a tiny bit.

Many years ago, I believe it was American Airlines used part of this composition (very effectively) in their commercials. 😊
United Airlines and they still use it to this day

Used by Woody Allen in the movie “Manhattan.”

All I can say is... my NY favorite. Thank you for appreciating it
Thanks again for your reaction! The next Gershwin piece will be about a person's visit to a certain city 😊.
a yearl later: Yes the 2nd half with the slow majestic theme brings out the best of one's humanity when you hear it.
A piece that defined the Jazz Age of the Roaring 20s in America.

Properly, a rhapsody is not a song, which is a shorter form.
I have the original Gershwin performance with Paul Whiteman back in 1928 I believe at Carnegie Hall. You need to hear the original.
Wow, the original vinyl/cylinder? (I forget how recordings were done back then lol).
1924
Yes, I actually wasn’t crazy about Bernstein’s interpretation here.
He is playing without needing a music sheet in front of him.
Concert pianists almost hever have music. In college it's forbidden for performances unless you're accompanying.
Most likely, you heard it on one of the airline commercials on TV, like United Airlines, I think.
Woody Allen used it in his film, “Manhattan.” She may know it from that.
Like being in a forest of really tall buildings. And it's beautiful.🙂
Beautifull woman..😋🌷🍑🌱
Lucie, this version with Yuja Wang at the piano blows this performance away (IMO): ua-cam.com/video/Ce3OERuCY0E/v-deo.html
