I bouth a cheap, used darbuka from Alexandria and the sound is not great. So I am wondering, how much does the skin affect the sound of darbuka?
Or if the body of the drum is in the low quality, the skin won't make a big difference?
A good skin costs the half of my darbuka, so maybe I should directly invest in a new drum🤔

Hi Omar! I have a couple of questions about tuning and darbuka resonance in general. 1) To which note or Hz value is a classic 22cm size and sombati size 23cm is supposed to be tuned conceptually? I can't get a reliable reading from the video with my tuner, but I thought that sombati 23cm should be tuned to B2 and solo 22cm to C3 (1 note higher), such that a solo darbuka sounds much higher than sombati. Yet my new GEF New Generation solo darbuka *(those with golden circle and pearl inlays) actually has the same tuning as older GEF sombati (beginner model with 3 rings at the base and no inlays and just broke textured enamel) at around B2, both are currently tuned to 126 hz (slightly above B2) and both at max tension *(screws completely in) barely reach C3 at 129 HZ and at this extreme tension the Tek is almost silent with no ring. So I can not tune the solo darbuka to C3 and I am confused, I am technically having almost 2 exact same drums now with 1 cm difference in membrane and same height/weight. 2) Second topic: if you turn darbuka upside down and tap the metal near base - you hear a metallic humm like a bell ring (or Tibetan singing bowl). It's just overtone ringing from the metal - no plastic head involved. So my older sombati with no pearl inlays has a MUCH louder and longer bell ring than a 3x more expensive New Generation Blue Pearl GEF solo darbuka, because pearl inlays and enamel is much thicker on it and it absorbs the metal overtones.. So is it a good property or a bad property? In my head it is a sonically inferior quality, yet everyone use the daqrbukas with inlays. I see that most of your darbukas have pearl inlays, do you miss the extra resonance of bell ring? Is it a bad or a good thing? Best wishes and thanks for your content!

Hi Pedro, thank you! Yes, It's very uncommon to brake a Darbuka skin. So when you tight the instrument to get the best high sound without losing the harmonics and you see that the ring it's not at the same level as the skin so you need to change it. Also when the screws are telling you, stop don't tight more! 😊 hope it helps hugsd from Barcelona

May i know whats the reason using the hair dryer?
The reason for using the dryer is to stretch the skin. Heat loosens the molecules of the plastic. However, after changing many darbuka skins (it's my main instrument), with all respect to Omar Kattan I admire very much, I would personally advice against it. The reason being that with hairdryer, it's very hard to heat the skin evenly, and if you heat it unevenly, some areas may stretch more than others, which will result in uneven thickness of the plastic skin, which in turn will make the instrument very difficult/impossible to tune - the "tek" will have sort of false, pitch-changing ring to it that I personally find very annoying. If the skin is very tight and needs to be stretched to fit, my advice would be to do so slowly, just by applying heat, over longer period of time - keep it weighted down and very slowly, turn the screws in the star-shaped pattern every day. It's extremely important to keep the head that stretches the skin always evenly tightened - measure the gap between the head and the body of the drum, and always tighten so the gap is even across the whole diameter of the drum. When the skin is stretched enough so that there is no ridge between the skin and the head, leave it for some time so that the plastic stabilizes, then loosen a bit and tune by ear - play "tek/ka" while rotating the drum, and in must sound with the same pitch - if it's lower somewhere, tighten the screw at that spot.
Why would you switch out the Skyndeep for that Rennasaince Remo head? I have used both heads and the Skyndeep sounds so much better.

They usually come with the Darbuka, the key is called Allen

There are just two questions I have ... did I miss why you use the hairdryer? I think I can guess that you use it to properly seat the head once the new one is on, but why would you use it before you take the head off? Also ...
Did I also miss the part of tuning the head to a pitch, or do you do it instinctively since you've done it for so long? I tune my darbukas like my congas ... I tap the head at each lug until they're on the same pitch (more or less). Is this wrong? I've found my darbukas sound best when I do that.

Hi Mark, I used before replacing couse that Darbuka was very tight and I thought I helps to low.
And yes if I've to record in a song if there's Melody I try to tune as you said. That's the way to tune but not at the beginning. First I just want to get the same level between the ring and the skin. And this days I was loosing a lot couse it was so much tight. But I did not record that, and yes I missed to talk about tuning in a note

Hi! I never tried those skins but they are much better than the original ones.
I chose Diplomat Remo for the little one couse I wanted something like the other I used (was skin deep remo skin)
Do you have all 3 mesures? Darbuka, Sombaty Dahola? If you have for example 2 Darbukas with the same diameter maybe you can try with different textures.
So I think you can get different remo types or Power beat. And sincerly I liked very much how sounds now my sombaty 23cm (with powerbeat black)
