As for the mono leader on the braid mainline, I have cast braid leader on Mono, Mono leader on braid, makes little difference on a multiplier, as long as the cast is efficient and the reel is set up correctly.

Thx Max. Yes I've probably got the setup wrong. I've decided to use braid for backing only and mono topshot.

Casting braid on a multiplier is 100% possible, I do it all the time.
The Fathom that you have is the first model, it only has the centrifugal brakes which are useless on that particular reel. The Fathom 2 has the magnetic brakes, mine is set to 8 clicks on, spool tension knob for a little side to side play in the spool, a nice smooth cast, and the braid casts beautifully.
The Fathom 15 Casting Special that you have (had) also casts braid very well, but it requires and extra magnet to get the braking to within a nice fishing range. I spool the Casting Special with 50lb Whiplash and the Fathom 12 with 30lb 4x J-Braid.
If the reel is set up correctly and you have an efficient cast, it would be extremely unlikely that the braid will catch your finger because you don't use your thumb to control the spool. I have never cut my thumb casting braid on a multiplier. Also overwinds should be no more regular than the odd wind knot on a grinder if done properly and no, the magnets when set properly don't cost any distance, I have measured casts in a field and I cast the multiplier every bit as far as the grinder using the magnets and the same braid.
Your best solution for your reel is to add a static mag. It will require some time in the field to find that sweet spot and it won't be adjustable for changing conditions but it will easily cast a very good distance if set up properly.
I used to cast a Yellow Tail head on a static-magged Daiwa Saltist BG50 Multiplier spooled with over a km of 50lb Whiplash every bit as far as a grinder no problems.
I must also add that after fishing braid and mono back to back many times, I prefer mono for most of my fishing, not because of the casting, but to me mono mostly fishes better.

HI Max. I've had great success with casting the fathom 15 and the special cast 15 . Never any problems with both reels. the special cast i can only cast on max mag setting. 1 click less and boom...disaster..lol.
Ive removed the braid and just put mono on my Penn 40 now. its what I'm used to , so now to test on the field. will setup break blocks and see what happens. Thx for the great comment and insight.

@@terencesimpson100 I've cast a Penn 25N trying to use the brake blocks, they are useless. I fitted a mini center mag to my Fathom 25N, removed the blocks and it casts well now.
The brake blocks on the Daiwas and Abus work well, not the Penns though, also the brake blocks have a reputation for disintegrating on the Penns. The 25N, 30 and 40 use the same brake blocks as far as I'm aware.
As for the Fathom 15 Casting Special, yes your findings are the same as mine. Out the box It is only just fishable in favourable conditions with the mags on full. It's because Penn have used the same cast control on the Casting Special as on the standard 12 and 15 Fathoms/Squalls but the Casting Special has a larger heavier spool so the brakes are a little under gunned for an average fisherman. The casting experts fish them comfortably and they cast a sinker very well out the box on a field.
I've added an additional separate magnet to mine and it now casts well with the mags in the middle, 8 clicks I think. So there is a lot of room to move both ways, full mags makes the reel super slow so that it'll cast a bulky bait in to a strong wind, and if the conditions are favourable the mags can be dialed off to one or two clicks from minimum for a super long cast.
The Fathom 2 12 and 15 have mags that are perfect for fishing out the box. Fishes well in the middle. With room to move both ways.

Sir definitely ano no with braid on a multiplier. Yes braid for a grinder but do u need the braid, perhaps not.
Personally i use braid when spinning only with spoons and paddle tails.
Currently using daiwa hyper sensor mono with 35lb leader line on a 14.6ft, throwing 4oz, never looked back.

Terence, Terence, Terence. Please think of your fingers my china and take that braid off your multiplier. I have seen nasty accidents with braid overwinds cutting fingers off on a multiplier.
    The reasons for your overwinds.
Nr 1 - You should never be casting braid on a multiplier, rather use the braid as a backing with a mono topshot.
Nr 2 - If you running braid mainline with a mono leader you will always overwind. The braid comes off the spool faster than what the mono flies, hence the overwinds. The same effect happens on grinders if you run braid with a mono leader all the way down to the bionic finger then whenever you cast you get eye-wraps and wind knots on a grinder rod using that setup. Most of the time you will see braid mainline with braided leader and then a short piece of +- 1.5m mono on the end of the braided leader on grinder setups. This removes the speed differences between the lines causing wind knots and eye-wraps.
Nr 3 - If your multiplier rod has vertical guides rather than sloped anti tangle guides then you will also get plenty overwinds using braid.
Braid on grinders, mono on multipliers. Stick with that and you will be golden brother. 👍👍

My man, you are a Rockstar. I escaped an episode of the braid trying to grab my thumb. Geez I had no idea of this. Excellent explanation. Will be making changes tomorrow. Love this multiplier. Thank you thank you.

Yeah, correct. Buy some double X extreme abrassion. 0.36 works well for me as I pendulum cast as well. 0.36 is like kingfisher 0.40.

@@terencesimpson100 Glad I could help. Those penn fathom reels are really good, but braid on a multiplier is too dangerous. 0.4mm King Fisher Giant abrasion is very good line and isn't too pricey, but is really strong and lasts long without degrading over time.
Would not have liked to see you post an episode of fishing with a few less fingers on your hand so I'm glad you making the change. 👍
