- I'm late to this trend (who's surprised?) but as soon as I found out about Rihanna's mac n cheese recipe I was HIGHLY intrigued to hear that it includes ketchup and mustard. Listen, Rihanna could tell me to eat pretty much anything and I'd be willing to give it a shot. Anyway, I made it vegan by replacing the colby jack with... you guessed it, vegan colby jack cheese.

Thanks for watching and enduring me cramming Rihanna songs wherever I could, fam! One note: there's an additional step that I did for this recipe but forgot to mention which is to reserve about a 1/4 cup -1/2 cup of the pasta water and keep it in the pasta! Who's recipe should we try next?!
To me if I wanted it to taste different I would put some butter or oil in the pot then add the veggies and ketchup mustard and pepper sauce let it fry a little until the veggies get at least half cooked not to soft. Then add the pasta water and cheese then add the pasta. I would probably add more hot sauce than you did. And this is how I would do it .

She's from Barbados, that's how we make "mac and cheese" here 😊 we usually also bake it, as macoroni pie with cheese and bread crumbs on top for that crunch 😊 ketchup and mustard are a given, and some pepper sauce as well for spice
This is why I love trying international dishes, sometimes I find a new flavor combination that I don't know how I lived without, other times my taste buds just aren't prepared but either way, it's always interesting and eye-opening!

I would love for you to try Taylor Swift's chai cookie recipe. It's not vegan, so you'd have to substitute an ingredient or two but it seems like a fun recipe to try.
Veggiekins (on UA-cam insta and her blog) make a vegan gluten free adaption of it and it’s rlly good, even from someone who is not gluten free (and also from my friends who are not vegan)

I feel like a lot of homemade macaroni and cheese recipes call for ground mustard, so I don’t think it’s far off from that?? I think I’d like it i did ground mustard and ketchup in the food processor with the onion and pepper essentially making a little sauce action

Great video Merle! You do a good make n cheese anyway...maybe make a fusion of your Mac n cheese mixed with Rihanna's ...the nutritional yeast and carrots and everything mixed with the ketchup and hot sauce might make the flavor more complex and delicious 😋

Mustard helps to bring out the sharpness of cheddar. I used to put mustard powder in a mac n cheese bake.
This is just a personal preference as I make vegan mac n cheese regularly I use Dijon mustard and mix it into a Béchamel with some garlic salt and nutmeg salt and pepper,then I'd bake it with some bread crumbs on top and mix the Etons through after cooking as I usually eat hot sauce with mac n cheese especially left overs not a great fan of ketchup but that's just me and obviously keep the rest of the ingredients the same
Tamarind sauce is also a great mix through
I've made a mac & cheese with mustard before (it was the Antoni recipe he made on an early season of Queer Eye), but never with ketchup. I need to try it!!

Mustard (usually powdered) is a super common Mac & cheese ingredient. It’s in every standard (not “quick” or “5 ingredient” etc) casserole-style recipe. I’ve even seen it in a bunch of stovetop-style recipes. Ketchup is a new one for me though. If you like ketchup, it’s probably really good. I like to add a bit of hot sauce or jalapeño brine (depending on which cheeses I’m using that day). I bet the acidity from the tomato and vinegar give a similar flavor & also help to cut the one-dimensional richness.
I feel like less yellow mustard and like maybe dijon would be better?? I'd still eat it tho

I've always put BBQ sauce in my macaroni and ketchup and mustard are base ingredients in that so it makes sense

I've never had Mac n cheese so I don't have opinion to the recipe (yes I'm not lying it's just not a thing where I'm from), BUT, a niche (potentially cool fact?), As someone who wears glasses, I prefer to wear contacts... If you do wear contacts, your eyes won't water when cutting onions. Don't ask me why I'm not a scientist, it's just a fun fact haha😅. It works you guys, I promise!! ✌️

When I was little I used to put ketchup in my Kraft Mac and cheese. Also most homemade Mac and cheeses use Dijon mustard, so I don’t think this is weird at all.

For me nothing beats any box mac with hot dogs cut up and sriracha. Sometimes i add shredded mozz or pepperjack, to feel. We can do anything vegan nowadays, I unironically live laugh love it!

Yo, @Merle O'Neal, I might try this, but I already know, most Vegan cheezes suck major arse. Meanwhile, I just made some toast with SoDelicious cheddar slices and Myoko's liquid mozzarella for pizza, and it was DA BOMB! Lactic acid and protein are necessary for anything to taste like cheese. Next mac and cheeze I do will have these in it. My late husband used to love to just do mac and stewed tomatoes, with some butter or margarine, salt and pepper. Sometimes he would add some actual cheese, usually extra sharp cheddar. We Vegans need some extra sharp in our lives.
I miss him cooking for me; us cooking together, because we always added things we thought the other wouldn't want or like behind each others' backs. And then, what we made together was amazing. Our creamy potato soup "would have made you want to slap yo mama." But then, I was lacto-ovo. He held me back from going full-on Vegan. My current husband, also an Omni, is not big on soups, while my late husband made them constantly. Tomato based, whatever veg we had in the freezer, and I made the cornbread to go with it. I added seasonings when he wasn't looking. Gurl.
Tell everyone, heart disease is no joke. He piled his plates with meat whenever we ate out, and that was most of the time. He dropped dead in front of me six years ago, on our front walk. That was not fun for me. I am still recovering mentally. But I am still here, honey, and still going, now Vegan for over 4 years. You are partly responsible for me being able to not go entirely insane, feeling deprived. It is HARD, especially dining out. But I will not turn back. Be well, and thank you for being here for us all.

As a non vegan (almost 5 years 🎉) I was famous for my Mac and cheese. I used mustard in the beschemel. Also nutmeg! It makes sense to use ketchup too. Sweetness! Yummmm will be making!

Uhh the only time I've seen ketchup and mustard in a mac and cheese recipe is if it was a cheeseburger mac and cheese. When I was a kid my older brother put ketchup on his plain mac and cheese but he also would eat peanut butter and bologna sandwiches so Idk if he actually liked them or if he was trying to gross me out..

instead of ketchup and mustard try please to use tomato sauce in which you cook your vegetables, add an onion a carrot and celery and to have a richear sauce add spring onions and the bell pepper like in this recepie. At the end add vegan cooking cream; the cheese can be taken away, try to add it if you want. I think it would be better... P.S. I am Italian, do not destroy pasta...
