- Is soldering LiPo batteries causing trouble? It was for me. The solder just doesn't stick to the battery tab. In the video, I show you what's the correct way of soldering Li-po batteries with a lot of helpful tips and tricks. It's basically just soldering aluminum. So here is everything you need to know.

FLUX:
I couldn't find the one I'm using online as I bought it in a brick and mortar store
www.amazon.com...
www.ebay.co.uk...
You taught the Hacksmith something! Was wondering what the trick was... Thanks!
Well I didn’t wanna solder cuz I suck so I did the weirdest thing and stapled it and well actually was working flawlessly
Aha! The algorithm produces a gem! I'll be able to use the dozens and dozens of salvaged cells I couldn't solder to before. XD
I’ve been searching UA-cam looking for this solution. Thanks for thinking to post this subject.
Hey! What to do when those soldering pads fall of that battery?
The only thing the "special" flux does is clean the aluminum surface. Apply normal flux, then gently scratch with flat screwdriver tip, apply some extra flux and THEN solder.
Hmmm, that is not working. I am scraping it clean to bright metal. Have tried it with Nokorode soldering paste and without. No go. :(
Great tips . I've had Aluminum Flux before but it wasn't working. By watching your video I realized that I need to put more of that flux and keep moving the solder iron while applying solder. It's working like a charm.
Finally I know why!! Spent the better part of the evening trying to solder one of these. Should have watched this earlier.
what I do I put a stripe i ply it and I put the aluminium in between , I adjust my cheap (but very efficient) welder to 5 milliseconds .
Try it with food aluminium wrap, contact is perfect, after to weld on the stripe or spot it is easy (do not forget to readjust your spot welder to 8 ms, of course do not press too much(always true anyway),
Spot welding is not so aggressive for the pouch because the stripe absorb much heath.
My 5 cents
OMG you solved the mystery! Thank you so much!
Thank you! this tip is exactly what I need to salvage 2 lipo batteries!
flat or conical tip? xD
Thanks ya on mine one is copper and the other is aluminum and does not solder
Thank you for your humor
Good choice of clips......
Also, thanks for the soldering tips.....
Namaste
doug
will the solder heat damage and puff up the battery?
Thanks for the tip with the aluminium flux. I bet that’s the key. Cheers buddy!
they dont last long. eventually comes off. tried this numerous times
You can put the lipo in the freezer to give you a little bit more time to get it done
If you need more than 2 seconds you’re doing something wrong
I just broke positive terminal of a 10000mah lipo battery......please help me🥺🥺
Should this one be able to handle the task of soldering the aluminium to copper or steel?

OK I thought that it wasn't soldering because it was aluminium but the thing that troubles me is that somehow the aluminium wires have no problem been soldered.
Can we spot welder it? I have EV cells , one end is copper other is aluminium… I only need solder wire to it to do an battery pack
This problem was driving me crazy! I have a spot welder and it still doesn't work. I've ordered some new Flux, can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the tip!
I ordered two kids of aluminum solder. No worky.
How does your spot welder not work? Two dissimilar metals with a low(ish) heat conductivity compared to copper. Any spot welder out there should attach 0.10mm pure nickel without issue
@@ericklein5097 the best way I can describe it is that the metal burns away even when it is set to a short duration. This sounds like a fairly common issue welding these.
Thanks for saving me spot welder money...till I eventually need it. cheers
Great video! I am wondering which is the "Regular one" solder ?
Hello, my two cell li-po laptop battery could use replacement, can i solder 2 li po cells myself onto the original connector (from original battery) and just ducktape the batteries to the shell of laptop?
thank you. thank you. was driving me crazy...
0:43 best way to hold a soldering iron 😁 If you dont want to buy the alumin flux, just scratch up the surface with wire brush, sand paper or small wire brush to get the oxide off.
yooo i have tried and i can certify the trick doesn't work
I even had a blob of lead ready over the terminal and scratched the terminal hard and the blob just sticked to the soldering iron.
Yeah if you want to go to the store and get the right stuff to do the job, sure.
Yooo I’m sooo glad I found this video and you have a great sense of humor 2 extremely hard things to find you earned a sub my friend
Yes used ur trick ,for first it worked but after use of 1 day connection or shoulder went off due to some reason
Hi just wanna ask how to know the positive and negative of this lithium polymer battery co'z I have a fresh one without wires on it, so I need to install it myself, thanks by the way for this video! I've been looking for this for a week now. So lucky to find this one.
You have to use a multimeter or if you don't have one you could use just a LED. Longer lead is usually positive. If they are both the same then the flat side of the LED is negative
Love that image of that model pretending to solder
Thanks buddy for the great clip. I'm going to try it Saturday. I have aluminium solder but no flux.... always failed before
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🤩🤩 broooo..... NICE!!! Solid video fosho.✌
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing this!
have you got a link to the 90% tin solder please? many thanks
Can i use nickle and spot welder?
god damn that shit is expensive
Aluminum forms an oxide layer. To solder you need to remove the oxide layer and prevent it from reoxidizing with air. With my Al battery tabs, I've found that some light sanding, then coat with vaseline as flux is good enough. You want the highest watt soldering iron you can find, at the highest setting with a big tip to get maximal thermal transfer.
Is aluminum used for battery tabs due to its flexibility? Curious why that’s chosen
@@mrsemifixit Nah, most likely for cost. Better ones have the aluminum plated with copper or nickel.
@@Allenw154 Ah. Why are nickel tabs sometimes used around the aluminum for binging?
i often Make a Small Hole In The alminium!
Why are nickel strips used to attach to the tabs?
Nickel is the preferred conductor for low amp connections. Copper requires a massive amount number of amps to spot weld so we need to go down the list of metals slightly less conductive than copper. Not gonna do gold. Nickel is like 4 below copper and aluminum tabs plus nickel strips means dissimilar metals which helps.
nice vid! I often had lipo batteries where the wires broke off and now i know how to solve that!
Gyro is a man of culture.
It never worked when I have done it today
Skema for out put ?
Thank you solder wizard
Thanks for the video! does
Gracias 👍🏾👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Awesome, thank you
subbed
Can you use aluminum brazing flux
You can try but I don't think it's going to work
What song is that at 2:04 ?
Yes - Roundabout
Thank You. Great Video. Now I can make my 4s batteries. All 168.
love the vid , hate that stupid bottom burp , oops , music , sorry , hugs
Ben able solder every tab i ever tried beside new traxxas battery
