I remember Lord of the Pit being a big deal at casual tables before we even knew a competitive scene existed. It was huge, really difficult to block, and realistically would kill your opponent in three hits. It also didn't have a mana upkeep but sacrificing a creature instead, which you can keep up on and still have mana available for your turn.
Yeah I remember including spiders in my casual deck just so I could slow down Lord of the Pit if my opponent had the time to play it before I had my big green creatures
I was at my local comic con and Dan Scott was had a booth there. He had a binder with all the magic cards that he drew art for. I ended up buying one (Memory Plunder) and had him sign it. Not until after the con I noticed the back blank. I asked my friend at my LGS and he told me that it was an Artist proof.
Most I've ever spent was $350 for a lot of 3 cards. Won an ebay auction for a tropical island, volcanic island and taiga, all from revised and Italian (gotta love the foreign black border). At the time, Lord of the pit was very powerful. I remember my brother playing it with Breeding Pool when Fallen Empires came out, so it just made tokens for him to sacrifice every turn, and he had a 7/7 with flying and trample.
I think you can use Lord of the Pit in Old School, but in my case I use it with Fallen Empires cards, so I have Breeding Pits and Soul Exchange to get a Lord out. It's a fun deck, because if I get desperate I can stick a few Storage lands and hard cast Lord!

Lord of the Pit was nearly unstoppable at the time. Seven wasn't so hard when you could perform a Dark Ritual (or two!) to get you there quickly. As a 7/7 BLACK creature it was next to impossible to remove (Sword to Plowshares maybe) and flying made it hard to block while trampling meant that even if you did you almost always say damage go through. Sure you needed to feed your Lord of the Pit a time or two but you only needed to attack with it a couple time.
I would have 100% thrown it into the volcano. If i recall correctly there was someone offering either to buy it from whoever opened it or fly you and himself to New Zealand to throw it into Mt. Doom. It would have been so cool to take him up on that offer and walk from the shire to the volcano and throw the card in.
Honestly, I personally do not like card gradings. It's just such a sad thing. This beautiful card, that was meant to be played with, is now imprisoned in this plastic casing.
