- Many Naruto side characters were introduced in Naruto part 1 were wasted and misused in Naruto Shippuden. There were many characters like Rock Lee, Kiba, Temari, Kurenai, Kankuro, Ino, Shino, and Anko that didn't have an end to their character arc. There other characters such as Neji who had a terrible end. Neji's death was not satisfying.
There other minor characters such as Ibiki, Yugao, and Baki who were just forgotten. So let's talk about 16 characters that were criminally wasted in Naruto Shippuden. We're going to consider the Naruto Manga and not take the filler from the Naruto anime into account. Even though some of these characters may have had some more development in fillers, the vast majority of them are terrible.

Shino being irrelevant in shippuden is an absolute war crime. Rock lee survived his fight against gaara but somehow he's more dead after surviving and recovering from that fight than he was while gaara literally broke his limbs.
Kiba, just a shit side character, done dirty. I guess he was never hyped up much to begin with though. Neji, got done absolutely diabolical, died a meaningless death.
Got done in like true side character trash by some piece of wood.
The worst of these crimes imo is rock lee.

Neji’s beliefs and ideals were beaten into him by his family , years of trauma and literal slavery. His mindset was unhealthy at best and he died happily. Yes his death was implemented terribly but even in Part 1 during sauskenretrival Neji knew that Naruto was right. Hell Naruto shouldn’t have even beaten neji in part 1 tbh but who cares it’s shonen anime.
It’s not gaslighting though, he had no idea nor a reason to clarify down the road.
The same naruto that was blackballed to do anything because the people hated him or the naruto that was destined to continue a cycle of hatred for many other generations? I get he had a lot of powers but he wasn’t destined for greatness he was destined for failure but overcame it

I loved Anko so much. She was Orochimaru's former pupil, you know the main villain for the first part! She had so much potential!
Yeah they shoulda used her way better. Orochimaru taught her many forbidden techniques but wiped her memory? They should have had her get her memories back and had her be more badass than just used as fodder during the whole war arc

i would say gai dying to madara would have been a great end to his character , and him being the only character madara killed and the one he respect and see as equal (except hashirama) would have been great and showing the consequences of 8th gate being shown as it was promised
Naruto can literally create an eye from nothing and bring Guy back to life from using the 8 gates but for some reason, can’t heal Guy’s bones lmaooo

There was no buildup to his death and the second he died, the focus switched to Naruto and Hinata. Neji was hardly a character in Shippuden before he died.
Furthermore, he didn't run away from his destiny. He died as people of his branch are expected to die.

I think neji had the setup to become the clan leader bc hinata would settle down and become a mother, also she’s not nearly as skilled as he was if anyone from the konoha 13 should have died before boruto, I say it should have been kiba, he shows the least improvement of anyone & im not really a fan of killing off one of the girls.
Tenten is my fave. The only konoha 11 girl who worked hard without chasing a guy and has the most ninja like abilities in a show full of mages.

@@11_valyghost2 Ninja abilities are Taijutsu, Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, Bukijutsu, Fuinjutsu, Kenjutsu, Kinjutsu.
Summoning weapon from scroll is a type of Space-time ninjutsu and storing it using Fuinjutsu. Tenten is also proficient in both Taijutsu and bukijutsu. Does it not look ninja to you?

The side cast was fumbled so bad that even now years after that the story was ended it’s still that outrageous. Sakura was literally supposed to be the 3rd team 7 member and the FEMALE MC but they somehow eclipsed her completely, even some Akatsuki members don’t really feel like they were really used, Lee literally got all of his screen time robbed by Guy, and the rest of the Konoha 12 was forgotten. I never considered Naruhina interesting and Neji dying for that pisses me so much cause he deserved way better than that. He was already so useless and absent in Shippuden that even him dying to Kidomaru would’ve been way better

Kishimoto wanted to kill him there but they forced him to keep them alive and about naruhina it was forced and you can really tell because hinata doesn't do anything in the story she barely exists in the manga the only reason she ended with Naruto because she was popular character because of fillers

Whole universe feels wasted. The clans introduced in part1 are forgotten, same for the jinchuriki all killed offscreen or barely introduced, the other villages are rarely seen. The akatsuki is a let down with Obito reveal that he is doing this because his crush died... Waste potential and destruction of universe in later parts.

None of the lcans, the Nara clan, the Akimichi clan nor the Yamanaka clan are explored on their own we only know they are allies and always team up together for some reason. We never find out who the original founders where, what kind of traditions they have, why they even team up with the other clans in the first place other then them I guess thinking they made a good team. Akatsuki Supression revealed the Nara clan has like a whole forest to them where did that ocme from? Why do they have that? Do other clans have territories to them like that? No, the Nara clan jsut does cause I don't know. The Uchiha clan that's literally genocided by the time the story begins have more history to them then the entirety of other clans in Naruto. The Senju clan, Hashira's clan, the very clan of the first hokage. What's their history? Fuck all that's what lol.

Becaus elf terrible writing. The magical weapons users beat Tobirama back in the day, had kyuubi transformations, and were infamous since the OG days. It took like 5 squads of ninja to take them both down while they were cocky the entire time. When tenten gets those weapons and should be Kage level she does NOTHING.

You know, I understand One Piece is a much longer show/manga, and therefore has more time to develop characters. But let's be honest, Oda's ability to connect plotlines and develop his less relevant characters is a step above everyone else (for those who have seen One Piece). Say what you will about the main story, but nobody makes people feel important like Oda. Characters that I REALLY disliked upon first seeing them and then this legend makes me love them within a few arcs. It's impressive.
That said, even with the limited manga chapters Kishimoto had, he definitely did still miss the mark on many characters. We all know the ones lol.
Tagashi is a master of making minor characters you never forget
It all has to do with Oda not making his arcs all about fighting. Kishimoto seems to take in the DBZ approach and make most of his arcs about a series of fights. Look at the Kazekage Rescue arc, it's basically jsut a list of fights, "Naruto shows up and Team 7 has their rematch, then immeidatly after Gaara has a fight with Deidara, then like 2 chapters later Itachi shows up and the team must fight him now, but at the same time Team Guy is also fighting Kisame and after those fights are concluded Team Guy fights their clones while Sakura fights Sasori and Naurot nad Kakashi fight Deidara". It's why most pre-Pain Shippuden arcs feel so short they are mostly just a series of fights with little room to breathe. The Alabasta arc is almost 2 times longer then the Kazekage Rescue arc yet has the same amount of fights because most of the rest of the arc is spend epxloring and adventuring and letting the characters interact with each other.

Hinata IA is amongst the most popular in the entire series, while Neji is not even in the top 20. Hinata was also more important to the plot than Neji ever was. And yes, Boruto is trash, but that has nothing to do with Hinata.

I feel that Konan was wasted as well. After she defected from the Akastuki, her first actual fight against Obito, she died because he straight up cheated and altered reality. And that’s it. She’s not mentioned at all afterwards, it’s now known who is aware of her death, and the Rain village is still in bad shape by the time Boruto happens.
The dumbest part of neji death is how everyone stops what theyre doing on the frontline of a battlefield and are like 'i cant believe it happened' while hundreds of nameless shinobi are dying around them

I heard that he was really meant to die back in Classic Naruto during his fight against Gaara, but he quickly became a fan favorite so Kishimoto let him live instead. That's would explain why he feels so absent later on in the franchise

Nobody wanted to hear Sakura whining about that prick Sasuke. She would've developed if she told Sasuke to stuff it, it would've showed her strength.
The same goes for Naruto, Sakura's issues was being written to do nothing after the Kazekage arc, and when she did do something Kishimoto writes her to fumble.

I just really wanted to see a byakugan vs sharingan battle as they were both so hyped up, definitely would have been amazing to get a battle of Sasuke vs Neji at some point. But the the byakugan and its users became all but useless fodder when they were supposedly the strongest in the leaf.
Why..... why did they do Anko so dirty?! What they did to her in Naruto Shippuden was criminal......but what they did to Anko Mitarashi in Boruto deserves a death sentence 🤬
Most of the side characters feel like they were worthy main characters of their own story forced to play background filler to legally distinct Sayians with ninja outfits. Like i mean Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro by themselves were a unique group that could have had an entire spin off focused on the stealthy world of Ninjas.
They really tried to keep everyones favorite characters. I liked Gaara so guess what? No he's not going to be a badguy anymore, also he's not going to pass away from the tail removal, or from a meteor dropping on his head.
People like orochimaru? Ok lets bring him back also since like we want a good ending lets make him a good guy roo.

It still pisses me off that Kiba is one of the laughingstocks of the franchise. Everyone likes dogs, and he has a cool ninja dog and they turn into flying drills. I'm pretty sure the data books said Kiba was also the fastest in the konoha 13 besides Rock Lee. He basically lost to Naruto due to luck, and then just did nothing for the rest of the series. I wish everyone didn't hate him, the werewolf fighting style is also very cool.
People tease Kiba but his transformation in part 1 was strong

I hated Kiba because he was a cocky fuck but lost to a fart. He felt like a big mouthed bully. His abilities are cool but I couldn't stand him.
Something that One Piece does to guarantee that the Strawhats always have some shine in the arc is to give the main villain a big roster of minor villains so the other carachters aside Luffy can fight. Maybe the Akatsuki could have some goons for the other characters to fight
What bothers me the most is the waste of the Jinchūriki, something that even "our" dear video friend in his "good" rewrite (Because in reality it is horrible) did not do either and I also waste them by killing the stupid ones without mentioning What is this about eliminating each person's Red Mantle ability when there were better ways for it to be there but for each Jinchūriki to develop something unique and the Red Mantle is actually not the Chakra of any Bijū but is actually the Essence of the Ten Tails, which is still active, I mean that "The Red Mantle" in the end was something more intrinsic to each Bijū but in reality it was a nuisance that should be eliminated, but no, "it is better to kill them completely stupidly who wants to see a Group with a Huge Potential for Development and Impact, much larger and gigantic than any other secondary character and that the Jinchūriki would contribute much more throughout History to the point that they can be the Equivalents of the Straw Hat Crew in the Naruverse", seriously In the Canon, the Jinchūriki HAD MUCH MORE TO GIVE, not to mention that each of the Jinchūriki, both in power and character development, are thousands of times better than most of the Konoha characters outside of the main group and one or another out there. Come on, all the Jinchūriki *SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE MAIN PROTAGONISTS OF THE ENTIRE SHIPPUDEN* and with the focus of Naruto going to look for them all to unite them to fight Akatsuki who would perfectly still be threatening and without the need to catch even a single Bijū In fact, it would leave them in good shape when they saw that it took the Nine Tailed Beast Carriers to defeat all the Akatsuki together once and for all.
The One Piece comparison was trash. In the same amount of chapters One Piece developed minor characters way more than Naruto, it's not just because it's big, it's about writing choices.
Yep, honestly i'd go as far as to say that Bleach also did a better job at developing side characters and it has rougly the same amount of chapters as Naruto. But yeah, when it comes to doing side character development in long running shounen series, One Piece should serve as the model.

If there were major arc that focuses on the side characters that would be amazing because some side characters shine in fillers episodes
Naruto needs to be longer like one piece
I like the Rock Lee spinoff for actually giving focus on the side characters. Team Guy has actual screentime. Tenten had her rematch against Temari. Heck, the author of the spinoff asked Kishimoto to draw up a design for Hinata's sister since she was completely forgotten in all of Shippuden(minus all the fillers and the epilogue movie which came after the spinoff). It may be a goofy non-canon adventure but it was nice to see Team Guy getting focus for once.

Neji could have been the best rival to sasuke and naruto. Sage of 6 path naruto, rinnegan sasuke and tenseigan neji.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but the filler actually helped Neji in a big, bad way. The anime at least gave him some screen time and even some resolution with the Sound Four.
If you only read the manga, Neji shows up to save Gaara, disappears into the background for the whole series, and then dies to a stick. Forgive me. I meant many sticks.

On one hand, I agree but on the other, I also agree for a different reason, if Anko at least retired, what’s done is done, but she didn’t, what I hate the most is, when she was introduced it was still in a state of peace but she still trained and go on missions. Now, she let herself go but she still is a ninja but she doesn’t go on missions or train anymore because it’s a time of “peace”? Wasted character with a dumb reason for why she is how she is now
What I didnt like about the war arc was that they brought back characters that were convinient for the story. For example Asuma. Asuma was strong but not anything out of the ordinary. Literally the only reason he was brought back was because of choji. There were also other shinobis that were brought back which just made me question the consistency of Kishimotos decision: Why would he bring back average/a little above average strenght shinobis, when he already had an entire army of Zetsus? I obviously get the reanimations of the stronger characters, like the dead Akatsuki members, Madara, some older Kages, (and altough I dont think they should have existed, but) Ginkaku and Kinkaku etc. because they were really strong, but a character like asuma was simply not anything special.
Anko was misused fr, a tokubetsu jonin with a curse mark, imagine how strong she would've been in stage 2, if Shizune and Kabuto were implied and stated (respectively) to be on Kakashi's level back in part one, she defo a powerhouse.
Not having sai on the list is kinda bad considering how much backstory he didn't get and how many fights he had off screen
I'd rather have Lee fighting a Edo Version of Might Duy in the War arc and Neji vs His father so they could get some epic screen time and character development rather than watching Sai crying for his brother and Choji crying for Asuma once again those last too were unnecessary developments...
Wasting characters is main thing kishimoto and kubo have in common
Most shonen do that once they reach a certain point. It's a problem of going too long. As much as people pretend One Piece doesn't waste characters, Oda does it too.
My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen do it too in newer stuff. It's a battle shonen thing.

I kinda Understand them they created a Big universe With lots of Characters Its hard to give Screentime To every Character You created But I can See why people get mad for wasted Characters

japanease manga market is really something else, to understand the reasons behind all these lost potentials, you have to understand that managakas are not artists for japanease society, they are artisans, they create what the the society wants and needs in this case plot twists. that s why we see for every manga list of the most liked charcters so that the mangaka focuses on these charcters in question and throw others to the bin, ecpecially in naruto s case, where s it s not as long as one piece to have time to develop most of the things, and not as short as shinegki no kyojin to deliver the whole experience in one shot....it s sad but it s the matter
I'll never say that Shippuden was bad, it wasn't. Sure it had a lackluster ending, but overall, it was good. However, it has nothing on OG Naruto. It had something special that Shippuden lacked.
OG Naruto was dark and had consequences. Shippuden was a much more average shonen with random power ups and no real consequences to anything. And of course, the classic child of prophecy trope...

When it comes to wasting character or no development, Kishimoto is God level in this domain.
Most of these characters were supposed to die in part one but they forced him to keep them alive and ruined them
Replace the Anbu woman and Ibiki in this list with Shizune and Ten Ten, plaese.
I get that Ten Ten doesn't deserve much development because She was never a character. So I would put her down in the tier, also because She actually HAS a Moment where She snitch one of the most powerfull artifacts ever in the series from the Gin/Kin fight (such a weird writing choice🤔😅). But you know, She could have done more.... Like Gai has the turtle summoning jutsu and She could have learned THAT. That would have been a nice touch.

Shizune is supposed to share her status with Anko and Minato. She Is the First disciple of a Sanin and 5th Hokage and She is SO POINTLESS. I don't even Know her full name. Does She even EVER get a FILLER EPISODE👌 dedicated to her?? I am legit curious.
And the Just DELETE Yamato and put Anko in his place. Anko should have been the leader during the Tenchi Bridge arc
Tenten's atributes is space-time and sealing jutsu. Imagine if she learns flying raijin and uzumaki fuinjutsu.

Honestly, seeing this list besides the Konoha 12 members, there were some interesting characters who actually could have used more fleshing out. At least the cooler Jonin level characters.

Sasuke is never home to the point he deadass was about to kill his own daughter cause he hadn't seen her in years lol. Sakura lost.
We should have had a rock lee versus Neji Hyuga fight and a Neji Hyuga versus Sasuke Uchiha fight, and maybe a rematch between lee and Sasuke after their quick fight in the first part, also Anko mitarashi should have had a bigger role in the story, same goes with Kurenai Yuhi, and ino versus sakura rivality should have been more developed, also Tenten deserved more screen time and a full fight against Temari in the manga and of course there is Shino Aburame that should have had a bigger role in Naruto part and part 2 specifically, also we should have seen Baki the jonin sand village have more fight. And obviously we should have seen Konan fight more character during the pain invasion arc and seen here capture a jinchuriki, all the 9 jinchuriki and biju should and list have their proper fight and capture mission and arc. Not just gaara, yuugito ni, killer bee and Naruto, 5, 6, and 7 tails and jinchuriki are not present in the manga, and the four and three tail capture mission is too short. I think that we should have seen Kakuzu fight Tobirama Senju and even kills his former akatsuki comarade. Also the brother of chiyu of the sand village should had a bigger role and proper fights. Also Suigetsu and jugo deserved better treatment not gonna lie. Some fillers did justice to some of the characters that i mentioned. And i think we should have seen all the 7 seven member ninja swordsman of the mist before the war arc, not just Zabuza Momochi, Kisame Hoshigaki, and the fifth mizukage assistant (he became the next kage) we should have also seen Sasori assassinate the third kazekage too! And as you said Hayate girlfriend should have had a better and larger role! She is so underated and had a huge potential! Also the host of Orochimaru "Gen'yūmaru" well I think kishimoto should have given him a proper backstory and flashbacks too. Also I think that Fugaku Uchiha should have played a larger role, at least in the flashback, he should have had his own story like e spin off manga, and of course same with Haku and Kimimaro, also we should have seen the full fight and assassination/ambush of the Gaara father by Orochimaru, Kimimaro and Kabuto. (A bit more of Dosu Kinuta screen time and fights wouldn't have hurt either). We should have seen more Choji fight too. And a manga apparition or a few chapters or a quick arc about the twelve guardian ninja would have been welcome and of course MORE MINATO NAMIKAZE screen time! Feats! And wins! Also during the the fourth shinobi war, Izuna Uchiha should have had been resurrected and been the right hand of His brother Madara, also the third kazekage should have nee' resurected as well. After all we just don't have one kage (beside those of Konoha) that the alliance fight, we also have the yagura as a ressurected jinchuriki! And i do think that Fugaku should have been ressurected as well. also i think that we should have seen Sakumo Hatake be ressurected during the war act and face against Kakashi, and he should have a spin off manga for him too! also we should have seen the entire fight of Might Dai against the seven swordsmen ninja of the mist. Also we should have seen the Shikkotsu Forest and a character or two learn the sage mode of the slug.
PS: Nawaki should have been resurrected during the war arc as a psychological tool to use to destabilize Tsunade.
PS 2 : The sound four should have been ressurected as well, they can use their cursed mark level 2 without any fatigue limit, also it seem only natural to ressurect them since Kabuto used their DNA in HIS body lol.
I want to add that i wish we saw more of Hanabi Hyuga, she had so much potential!
I think that Kishimoto should have made a spin off of some chapters, or mutliple short spin off, telling about the three previous 3 ninja world war.
Kishimoto leant far too much into comedy and shock value over long term story telling and pay off. 🤷🏼♂️

I really like Rock Lee, Kankuro, Temari, Anko. I liked Hinata and Neji. Such a shame all those characters were wasted.
I know this is about characters from classic wasted in shippuden, but Konami was done dirty, Danzo (whos a pretty shit character even for a villain) had a fight that was way more interesting than hers.
Also I love when people say that Naruto is perfect and the best anime, how many other animes did you saw, one? It just pisses me of, as huge fan how poor planned shippuden was, especially after the pain arc.

the fact that ikemoto made boruto worse by show casing naruto and sasuke have god like powers and the others are just non cannon fodder in the story and both of them also got negated by jigen and made the next generation higher than those god tier characters. I mean, come on, how much lazy do you have t be to write such a trash story.
Well Naruto is definitely shorter than One Piece but it also has far more characters to give attention to, like at least double as of right now.

Sakura ending with Sasuke is the biggest character regression ever, theres no coming back from that, it was wraps since she never got past that crush. She can cure cancer and as a character she gon remain as trash.
A better end to Neji's character arc would have been if he became the head of the Hyuga clan. This change in the status quo would perfectly suit the implied theme in Part 1 of destiny and going against what others tell you that is. If someone had to die, let it be Hiashi instead, and his dying words could be about the old Head and Branch system being wrong or something as he passes the torch to the next generation.
