Did you know back in the 1960s, 18 different airlines had put down an order for the yet-to-be-built Concorde, summing up 75 Concordes in total?
But after the horrific crash of the Tupolev -144 at the Paris airshow in 1973, all airlines cancelled their orders. Except for Air France and British Airways, who were stuck with the project as their two governments were the ones financing and building them. Only 20 Concordes were built, and only 14 ever entered service!

That’s true, many countries didn’t want Concorde to go supersonic flying over them because of the loud boom, so it could only go supersonic on transatlantic flights. Not to mention it was expensive to operate, and used lots of its fuel in takeoff. Engineering triumph, yes, economical triumph? Unfortunately not

i think, they rather cancelled the orders because of the speed registrations (below mach 1) for the plane over land area which the USA created because their Boeing 2707 project was cancelled. It had (at least officially) nothing to do with the TU144. There was just no need for the plane for most airlines.

Concord was apparently perfection to fly. The final Air France crash was greatly unfortunate due to debris on the runway which punctured the wing tanks. @@noone7692 Comparing the Concorde crash and the TWO Tu-144 crashes doesn’t make any sense. Concorde crashed due to debris from a DC-10 causing damage to the aircraft. Both of the Tu-144 crashes were due to the aircrafts poor design and construction. At the Paris air show it broke up mid air, and the second crash was due to 3 of the 4 engines failing during a test flight before it was supposed to be sent to Aeroflot service. Also, Concorde wasn’t a failure like the Tu-144 because it did actually see commercial service for 30 years, and made a profit for the operating airlines. The Tu-144 saw no commercial use and that’s why it was a failure.

The Tupolev has little to no connection in the cancellation for the Concorde orders. Back when there were only a few built, the Concorde proved to be very expensive during the oil crisis of that time. And it became unpopular due to the sonic booms that were produced over their flight path. People who live under the flight path of the Concorde would hear sonic booms, and it was strongly protested against, again causing the airliners to cancel the orders only 14 were built and only 2 are left (i think?). The success of Concorde was saved when it was marketed for the upper class, as a quick and luxurious experience.

The TU144 was designed and built by the Soviet Union. The Concorde was designed and built in the UK and France, it was a joint project initiated by both governments. The American speed restrictions impacted Concorde negatively, as the U.S. carriers hoped it would.

After the only concorde crash that ever happened (in service), they were retired from service, but this was actually just an excuse to solve the problem of concordes being way too loud.

The most amazing aircraft. Used to live near the end of runway 03 at Prestwick, and Concorde would come for training every now and then. Thunderous full after-burner touch and gos. Amazing. My dad got me onto the airport to walk around and go onboard - sat in the captain's seat too (not sure that was allowed ;) ).
Absolutely amazing aircraft. Still untouchable performance wise to this day.

I recall at yyz , late 80,s the Concord took off over my shop once a week on one off the north run ways.
No matter how busy I was, I would hear it and run outside and watch it as I heard that wonderful rumble only she could make.
On its retirement tour in toronto I got to stand at the door and look inside. Skinny and a wounder of engineering.

Our future of commercial aviation is in the Concorde V2.0. Traveling at subsonic across the world is now ridiculously slow and tiring. We need supersonic passenger and cargo. The new passenger Concorde could be one that matched the interior of leading first class and premium economy configurations, even in double decker, wide body, modern cockpit, modern materials and super efficient engines. Supersonic corridors could be developed for it's travel. I think that would be where we would be today if Concorde was stuck to and where we needed to be. Subsonic is really for distances and areas where supersonic wouldn't match.

As others have said, it was the lack of range, fuel consumption, inability to fly supersonic over land and politics rather than the TU-144 crash. However, the biggest death knell was probably the launch of the Boeing 747.

The reason for the Tupulev breakup was a French fighter yet flying near it unannounced to check-up on the plane. The shock reaction of the Russian pilot upon noticing the jet caused the break-up in midair. No airplane can withstand such a reaction so low above the ground due to the absence of overpressure in the cabin. Any sleek airplane, including the Concorde, would have broken up.

The TU-144 had little impact on Concorde sales (more of an impact of TU-144 sales). What hurt Concorde sales was the oil crisis largely. The introduction of widebody aircraft also hurt Concorde sales, as it was more cost effective to fly a lot of people at a fairly quick speed than not very many at supersonic speeds
