    Leo is an incredibly famous actor. How have I never heard of this film? How did I miss it? The trailer doesn't even look vaguely familiar. It's exactly the type of off the wall, foreign film feeling movie genre that I was in love with back in the 90's. Do I need to look up the filmography of every actor or actress I really like just to see what I missed? I guess so.

    That trailer gives me goosebumps every single time I watch it. It's a masterpiece of it's own and that's mostly due to the ingenious soundtrack of Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. And it's a shame the lines Rimbaud says at the very beginning didn't make it into the actual movie

      Unfortunately, I don't know the name of that gorgeous song either:-( As far as I can remember, it's neither on the CD with the soundtrack nor does it appear in the movie...which is a shame. Judging from the style of the song I'd guess it was also written by Jan A.P. Kaczmarek...

    What an incredible and underrated film! I feel like it's thought to be one of the most unknown and unheard Leo's films.
    What a great cast! What a great scenario! What a great true story! Never heard of either of them before watched the movie.
    That's a truly extraordinary film to watch. So real, makes you think of everything you know, so instructional, so inspiring and so authentic.
    It's surely one of my fave films ever, not to mention Leo's amazing performance!

    • @jules8159
      @jules8159 3 роки тому +8

      They did, when Verlaine reads a poem to his wife and she says ‘I don’t really understand that kind of thing, I prefer your poems’ (reading The Drunken Boat), ‘L’impossible’ manuscript cover from A Season In Hell in the freaking out at the library scene, a letter Rimbaud sent to Verlaine after he left him stranded in London, David Thewlis’ voiceover sadly cut out the movie only in the trailer quotes ‘The Foolish Virgin’, when in London ‘I have searched the magic shapes of the happiness no one escapes’ from ‘O Seasons, O Castles...’, a few quotes here and there ‘Love has to be reinvented’, ‘the only unbearable thing is that nothing is unbearable’, ‘What’s your greatest fear ?’ ‘That other people would see me as I see them’ which those last two are totally wrong btw, lost in the translation it would be more like ‘the only thing unbearable is that nothing is bearable’ and ‘That others would see me as I see myself’, so quite a lot of quotes here but I agree, not nearly enough.

      @@jules8159 i think you might get it wrong, in the phrase of 'the only unbearable thing is that nothing is unbearable' ,its hard to make sense out of it and that's what poetry is supposed to do, to make you question what the writer is trying to say ,to speak and to express to the world.I gave a deeper perception to this phrase and i believe that somehow there's nothing you can't bear,nothing you cannot shallow,accept and understand.Its the whole role that suffering plays in this life.that even if you're half dead,even if you lost everything in this cosmic world, you eventually get through this alive and that's the unbearable part of your endurances. it is written in a very genuine way. The only unbearable thing is that there's nothing you can't bear and that's why you better off dead instead of living in suffer. in other words, there is nothing you cannot bear and that's what makes it unbearable (metaphorically)

    Beautiful movie that few saw and few were interested in!
    In spite of everything, I still don't quite understand if the poet Arthur is really homosexual ... The idea I had about him is greed for the fortune Paul had in his wife's life, but from what I understood and how As the movie ended, Arthur gave up on Paul's first chance after discovering a lot of poverty from him, alcoholism, offensive and dramatic character, and beyond all that, his lack of beauty. I feel very sad to see that in reality only Paul felt something, and unfortunately it was only carnal and not soulful ... And I feel a slight disappointment to learn that Arthur was just a young man with many picturesque but not different ideas about to feelings.
    Indeed, after watching the movie, I spent days trying to analyze the facts, and for me, Arthur and Paul were just two greedy looking for a personal interest. It was not love, it seemed to me more like a relationship of hatred and disturbance of different ideas.
    Anyway, congratulations to the actors and actresses who participated in this biographical work. And my congratulations to the director, among other assistants, who helped produce faithfully in a well-characterized manner. As far as I know, it's a great movie.
    Wonderful.

      @rymbaghli7303 2 роки тому +10

      To understand the movie, you have to know their story ! It was never about poverty ! It was a romantic and poetic relationship ! They run together and lived in total poverty , they were only eating boiled potatoes and drinking water as Verlaine said writing a beautiful poem " læti et errabundi " but they were truly happy , happy to inspire each other , happy to write poetry together... they lived together and spent long nights writing and writing verses of poetry, drinking Absinthe( green liquor really loved at the time by poets , it was a source of inspiration for a lot of them). And what people don't know is that when Rimbaud died , Verlaine honored him by trying to publish his poems and make them known by the public even after his death , he wanted the world to know that he wasn't just a provincial man , who had no manners, no class , arrogant and rude ! He was also this genius that everybody hated . The fact that they had a romantic relationship was scandalous at the time and Verlaine left his wife and baby to be with Rimbaud . The fact that Verlaine was a well known poet and a respected one in Paris who just abandon everything, his life and family to be with Rimbaud despite what people thought ! The saddesf thing is that Verlaine loved Rimbaud too much and he ended up broken when he left him ...

    Although River Phoenix would have shined in this role (as it was originally meant for him to take) Leo DiCaprio pulled it off to perfection, played it as no one else could & brought justice to the conflicted, complicated yet astounding legacy of Rimbaud.
    River would have been great & superb in this role, though Leo really nailed the complex, tempestuous, radically unconventional, ahead of his time & boisterous nature of Rimbaud, & in a marvelous fashion that I don't see River Phoenix quite being able to emulate. Amazing as River was!

    Lindo filme que poucos viram e poucos se interessaram!
    Apesar de tudo, ainda não compreendo bem se o poeta Arthur é realmente homossexual...A ideia que eu tive sobre ele é de ganância em relação à fortuna que Paul tinha em jus à sua mulher, mas que, pelo que eu entendi e como o filme terminou, o Arthur desistiu de acompanhar Paul na primeira chance que teve após a descoberta de muita pobreza vindo dele, do alcoolismo, o caráter ofensivo e dramático, e além de tudo isso, a falta de beleza do mesmo.
    Sinto muita tristeza ao ver que na realidade apenas o Paul sentia algo, e que infelizmente era apenas carnal e não de alma...E sinto uma leve decepção ao saber que Arthur era apenas um jovem com muitas ideias pitorescas, mas não diferentes em relação aos sentimentos.
    Realmente, depois de ver o filme, fiquei dias tentando analisar os fatos, e para mim, Arthur e Paul não passavam de dois gananciosos à procura de um interesse pessoal. Não era amor, me parecia mais uma relação de ódio e conturbação de ideias distintas.
    Enfim, parabéns aos atores e atrizes que participaram dessa obra biográfica. E minhas congratulações para o diretor, entre outros assistentes, que ajudaram à produzir fielmente de forma bem caracterizada. Até onde eu saiba, é um ótimo filme.
    Maravilhoso.

    • @milennamoraes7976
      @milennamoraes7976 3 роки тому +6

      Ao meu ver os dois se amavam muito, o amor era recíproco, eles apenas eram destrutivos um para o outro, porém se amavam de verdade. Paul desistiu da família para ficar com o Arthur e o Arthur ficou com o Paul apesar de toda a confusão do mesmo, se fosse interesse do dinheiro da família da esposa do Paul, o Arthur não iria querer que o Paul terminasse com a esposa e viajasse com ele, já li várias biografias do Rimbaud e ele inclusive ajudava o Paul com as despesas, os dois trabalhavam de professor de francês em Londres, eles se separaram depois sim, mas não por causa de dinheiro e sim por uma série de acontecimentos que levaram a isso, como disse, ambos tinham temperamentos difíceis e gênio forte, por isso acabavam brigando muito, tanto que o próprio Paul falou no filme que amava o Arthur mais do que jamais amou alguém, e o Arthur mesmo dizendo que não acreditava no amor, dizia o quanto gostava de Paul. Quando o Paul abandonou ele, o Arthur escreveu uma carta para ele, dizendo o quanto o amava e para ele voltar para ele, li isso no livro de correspondências do Rimbaud. Eu acho impossível que um caso de amor e paixão tão intenso como o deles tenham sido ganância, foi algo muito forte que mexeu demais com os dois pelo resto da vida deles, tanto que na biografia de Arthur Rimbaud, diz que no seu leito de morte, ele chamava pelo nome de Verlaine, mesmo depois de mais de 20 anos separados e enquanto isso, o Paul publicava as poesias de Arthur com lindas dedicatórias, graças ao empenho dele de não desistir de publicar os poemas do Arthur, que hoje ele é o que é, porque pela família do Arthur eles teriam queimado os exemplares e assim não conheceríamos esse maravilhoso poeta.

    I don't understand why this film is unavailable to rent (nowhere online). I remember watching it at age 19 about 20 years ago, wanted to give it a rewatch, but I guess this film is banned ! too many spicy gay scenes . the film was great however.

      Angélica de Paula Yes, I also realized this and I was very sad, I even tried to search the deleted scenes but I did not find anything, in my DVD also does not contain these scenes, and I was curious, even more because I am Brazilian and do not understand what they speak in trailer. I see from your photo that you are a fan of Leo. I've also been a big fan of him since my sixth birthday, now I'm 17, my room is a maze of his, and this is one of my favorite movies of him, I was very sad not to have these scenes. at least the deleted scenes from the titanic movie are found in the bluray but of that movie nothing.

    How is nobody mentioning the fact that a grown man fell in love with a child in this movie? It's literally romanticizing and glorifying pedophilia. It even says in the description "teenage protégé," like wtf how do people like this?

    • @ceemartin5624
      @ceemartin5624 Рік тому +3

      You are looking at it with today's mindset and also your own culture's mindset. Back then, it wouldn't have been considered paedophilia, nor would it have been today either. The current Age for Consent for sex in France, where the poets were from, is 15 years old. In 1863 the Age for Consent in France was 13 years old. Rimbaud met Verlaine in 1871, and they were both 17 and 27 years old respectively. And it was actually Rimbaud who pursued and seduced Verlaine, not the other way around.

Daqui a pouco vão fazer igual a irmã do Rimbaud, que negava o relacionamento dos dois e queria convencer o mundo de que mantinham "uma relação casta e fraterna" sofroooo
