HOW TO: PUT DRAINAGE HOLE in your pots WITHOUT DRILL
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 вер 2021
- It is always advisable to have drainage holes for our drainage pots when you can to avoid the possibility of overwatering the succulents.
However, some of us do not have drills to use. NO PROBLEM! In this video, we will show you how we created holes in our ceramic pot. This is exactly how we did it before we had a drill. (this is applicable for ceramics or terracottas)
Leave us a comment if you have any question or suggestion.
Thanks.
Leslie and Alfred
Can we just talk about how adorable this interaction is between these two partners? And thank you so much for this easy to understand explanation and demonstration. I will be trying this, as I frequently find flower pots I’d love to use that do not have drainage holes! In fact, the more I like the pot, the less likely it will have drainage holes, it seems 😂
You are so kind! Thank you so much. And I agree with you the gorgeous ones usually do not have holes! But nothings can stop you now. 😍
Works beautifully- no breaks after 10 or so pots. Many thanks for the tip 🙏
Awww, that is fantastic to know that it worked for you! Yey! =)
I have the drill and the diamond bits but this is so cool that you showed how to do it without a drill . Thank you so much!!!!
Thanks Beryl! I mastered the no-drill method because I did not want to buy the drill for a loong while.. haha..
@@SucculentSocial oh well I was given a drill two years ago as a gift . That’s great you can do it without a drill. You have skills!!
Thank you so much. I have a drill but I will try this technique. I have many ceramic pots without holes and this will allow me to transplant a lot of my succulents.
So Im scrolling thru n come across this video. Let me say THANK U! Such a great idea 2 share a video teaching others a handy technique. I noticed this is an older video, however the important thing is that I found it. There have been so many beautiful planters that Iv passed up in the store simply bcuz they had no hole (I dont normally put 1 pot into another). Now that Iv watched ur video, I can buy any pot or planter that I love 😁🧡 Thanks again! I would never have thought 2 look up a video doing this lol
Oh wow! So glad you found this helpful!
Thank you for this video. I have seen so many attractive pots that I wanted to buy, but didn't because they had no drainage holes and I have no drill to add holes. Now that your video has shown me how to put a hole in the pot without a drill or cracking the pot, I can buy so many of the decorative pots I was forced to bypass before. Thanks again!
Well, enjoy shopping for pots.. 😍
I did this! In a porcelain mug! I didn’t have a huge nail, I used the tip of a knife to get a little chip started on the glaze, tapped at an angle turning the knife point, then a Phillips screwdriver. I packed the mug with a wet towel and placed it on a folded wet towel to absorb shock. However, it did ruin the tip of the steak knife! :(
oh poor steak knife.. Thought you headed to home depot for the nail? haha..
And I'm guessing your tea leaks out now?
Thank you so much for this technical. Thank you Alford.
I used knife and screwdriver took me an hour lol
@@jennyshoarhouseLOL, good one!
Thank you 💕. You both are such an awesome couple. Soft spoken n excellent instructor's. Thanks again!!
Awww, thank you so much! Those are such wonderful words from you. I have to say though that between the two of us, Alfred is waaay better of an instructor.. And has more patience.. Haha...
I greatly thank you guys for sharing this wonderful & informative video, but most importantly I appreciate the happy & fun relationship the two of you have. The goofiness and giggling made this learning experience so helpful and truly entertaining. You mentioned at the beginning of the video that your husband doesn't care to make appearances in your videos. Well, I think he should seriously reconsider! The two of you make a great team & work so well with each other. I can rarely watch a DIY educational video without watching it 5 times, because I can't pay attention when I'm unamused/bored. Even though I watched this twice I really only needed to watch this once. The two of you throughly, quickly & easily explained all the information I was searching for in such an attention grabbing & amusing way. I gathered all the information I needed & surprisingly had fun learning it. PLEASE, think about collaborating together for future DIY/How To videos. From Jennifer, your new fan & subscriber. Thanks a bunch! 😁
Awwww, Jen.. Goodness, so kind of you! These are wonderful words.. Thank you so much, we really appreciate it. I promise to always drag Alfred along to make videos with me.. Thanks hun. sending you our love.. - Leslie
I so agree!!
Jen S… I totally agree with you! They make a great team together and the tutorial was well done. 👏🏽👏🏽
What is the name and size of this type of nail, please? I struggle hearing details like that.
@@SucculentSocial Does Alfred know that you will be dragging him along? LOL
If you sandpaper the.glaze a little it will be easier to tap on.
That is a great idea! Thanks Sherri for sharing that.. =)
Wow! That is so practical, I don’t need to use a drill coz I’m afraid to use a drill. Thanks for sharing👍💕
Glad it was helpful po..
Maybe get ur parents to show u how to use a power drill..😄
Im actually looking for the drill to buy but found it so expensive to get just to use for a few times in making hole in the pot… glad i found this tip! Will surely try it.
Yes me too went HD price diamond bits is $16-20 bit to drill a $10 pot …😂😂😳
Yey, glad you find this helpful. Let us know how it’ll go for you.. 😍
This is genius thanks for this tutorial I will try immediately! Also you two seem super sweet 😊🌱
Our pleasure! So glad you found this video helpful! 😍
Amazing! I ordered a beautiful planter and didn’t know it didn’t have a hole! Thank you for this!

Your husband is very clever👍💕👏👏👏
Thank you daw 😊
Tried it and was successful. 💕Thank you so much.
Wonderful! Glad it worked for you! 😍
I tried it, came out great! One thing though I ended up with a big chip inside the pot so maybe I didn't put enough tape? Or maybe I hit it too hard. Also I didn't have a big nail so I used the end of a screw driver (the one with the 4 thingys not the flat one) and it seemed to work fine 😊😁
Glad it worked for you... I feel that the major factors are 1) how compact the soil is inside because they absorb the pressure and 2) the amount of force of the hammer. But hey, who knew screwdriver will work.. haha.. NOw that the pot has hole, enjoy potting your plants in them.

You guys are ADORABLE! My hubby gets angry and frustrated with me- trying to teach me things 🥺 Your husband is so gentle and softly spoken 🥰🥰🥰
Ahaha… he also gets frustrated with me at times and just shakes his head… But God blessed him with so much patience in teaching, I have to say. 😉
Great video! You both are so cute.

That's good info but what if the ceramic pot is huge??
That’s Awesome 😂 Thanks so much 🎉
You are so welcome
Is it possible to use this method to create multiple holes if I wanted additional drainage, for instance on a larger pot?
We have not tried that but I’d say important to ensure enough distance between holes and I’d really get the soil compact to help absorb the impact and not cause the pot to break. Update us on how it will go.
very nice
Will it still work if I want 3 holes in the same pot?
Hi Hope, it should work but if you punch 3 holes in smaller pots, extra care must be given as the base may weaken and potentially crack. Pots with wide base (about 20cm or more) should be alright with 3 holes.

Does this work for Terracotta pots as well or do you soak them in water first? Your husband sounds so friendly, thank him please for helping us 😊
Yes they do, we have used this method for terracottas and they worked well. I will tell Alfred about your message. I am sure he will be thrilled. =)
New friend here all the way from phils. Sending my heartwarming Love and Full Blast Support
thank you.. love your vids too
It works! 😳😀
That's great to know! Enjoy your new pots with holes. :)
Can you do this in water instead of soil? Does it work the same way?
I have not personally done it but I remember to have watched something similar. It might help to put a damp cloth inside and fully submerge in water before hitting the nail. =) Please share with us any tips if you get a chance to do this in water. Thanks.
How lovely your husband speaks
Thank you! 😊

hello bagong kaibigan here ooh...
Thank you
OMG you are not going to believe me but that's the same thing I did I took a big chance and I did good with it..🤭 LOL 😆
Yey! you did it... I tell you, I can live with just doing the hammer way, I actually like it..;)

Would this work with a glass jar
Hi there, I have not tried this in a glass. I have read that as long as you used a diamond drill bit, using this in glass will work but I have not tried this personally so I can't share any tips. I reckon it could be a bit tricky with glass so maybe try first on one that is not too expensive. Let me know if it works for you.
nice
Did the pots break later from a weaker bottom?
Nope, the ones we used in the video are still with us and looking good. The key is to ensure minimal crack when you hit the nail hence the importance of using the tape and the compact soil to absorb the pressure. Go for it! =)
@@SucculentSocial thanks!

Where did you get the tool and what is it calledl?
It is just a regular (but bigger) nail and a hammer 😍

Wow they do it so easily. I m sure I gonna break my pot
Oh I am pretty sure you can drill that hole perfectly. The key is 1) put the tape at the bottom, 3) compact the soil , and 3) to start slowly with hammering. Practice on inexpensive pots first until you get the hang of it. You can do it!
Well, one deck nail/ spike is $. 87 @Home depot.
Talking so slowwww ……
I know, I got a tendency to do that when just chilled and having fun..
How about crazed antique ceramic? I bought a beautiful bowl and jug set i want to make into a succie pot. Newbie and I'm nervous!! 🥺
We have done it on ceramic pots and they went really well.
Just ensure lots of soil inside and gentle on the hammer pressure.
If you think it is on the side of fragile antique, I’d be more cautious and use the drill on them. They must be really gorgeous pieces. 😊
