  • Scientists in Singapore have completed a DNA study on the Peranakan community as part of a project to help find their ancestry. Professor Roger Foo, Principal Investigator of the Peranakan Genome Project, and Dawn Marie Lee from The Peranakan Association Singapore gave us a sneak peek into the findings.

Peranakans do mainly exist in Indonesia Singapore and Malaysia, just tiny bit in southern Thailand. FYI Indonesia houses the biggest peranakans which are fully integrated to nusantara customs and yet forgotten by its closest counterparts ie Singapore and Malaysia. The peranakans either in SG or MY are mainly clustered in just one or two places only, but you should know how big the Indonesian has. I am a Singaporean and my parents are the peranakans of Hokkien Javanese origin. FYI the nyonyas’ kebayas and batik sarongs we have in the country are mainly imported from Indonesia.

That is true there are roughly 6 million peranakan in Indo But their culture is not well preserve because of ignorant and pressure to assimilate by the Indo government
You see peranakan make the majority of Chinese in Indo specially in Java So there is little incentive to preserve since everybody is peranakan But the Malay and Singapore peranakan is minority among much larger Chinese body So as defensive measure they try to maintain and hang on the culture that is why you see peranakan organization like gunong sayang or peranakan association of Singapore. But that does not mean there is no peranakan culture in Indo
Before Suharto there are still lively peranakan drama group, magazine(Star weekly), newspaper Seng Po, Keng Po. Our own cartoon character "Put On" or cerita doeloe " See Jin Kwee" Cheng Tang or other classic Chinese story translated. Large body of Peranakan literature that is sadly now defunct, Kroncong composer etc
Sadly many leading peranakan family left Indonesia

”Hang” is just a starter name for “Notable” prefix name for Malay culture. Some people Said her name maybe Lee Foo/Li Fu maybe something like that because there’s another notable name in Malay culture that we put “Hang” for example Hang Tuah (Malay Warrior), Hang Jebat (Malay warrior), Hang Nadim (Hang Jebat little son who is very clever and lives is Temasek (Singapore) but get killed by a Sultan). Maybe Hang Lipo is a name that Malay culture created. Besides, Malay also always change the name when another person becoming or join Malay culture.
For example Parameswara from Srivijaya kingdome is a hindu then change name to Sultan Iskandar Shah after convert into islam. We still need to do more research about this because a lot of Malay manuscripts have been stolen during the invasion of 14 centuries. Based on documentation, there’s only 5% of Malay manuscripts have been studied and 95% are in the others country for example Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) and the Leiden University Library, are known for their significance and richness.
The KITLV in Leiden is renowned for its vast collection of Malay manuscripts. It holds over 3,000 Malay manuscripts, making it one of the largest collections outside of Southeast Asia. The collection covers a wide range of subjects, including literature, history, religion, and law.
Also in the Leiden University Library. The Leiden University Library, also located in Leiden, houses an extensive collection of Malay manuscripts. It contains around 1,000 Malay manuscripts, including literary works, historical texts, and documents related to Islamic scholarship.
Some said Malaysia try to negotiate with them to access the manuscript and want to digitalise the manuscript. A lot of process and money needed.
Some theory said there are 25,000 total manuscripts. This maybe can answer a lot of unsolve mystery, myths, legend for a Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia can become a game changer.
After all this is our heritage and tells who we are really is. The mystery of Puteri Hang Lipo, The mystery of Hang Tuah and many more. We need a solid proof for documentation.

peranakans are simply early settlers of the nusantara region before the influx of migrants from china and india in the late 19th to early 20th century. since there were no deliberate attempt to colonize this region, early chinese and indian settlers' population was small enough that the circumstance encouraged assimilation rather establish their own 'colonies', it stayed that way for a long time. over the course of hundreds of years, it is expected that intermarriages happened.

I have seen ur video before n it is rather interesting. As a researcher myself, I studied on the Peranakans of Malacca, Singapore n Penang and found that they were Chinese in origins and not of mixed-blood parentage!
As for traces of blood of natives as also determined by these DNA tests, they were of negligible percentage, less than 5%! This might be due to the unions of what happened in the 1400s!

    • @bernardlokman5442
      @bernardlokman5442 29 днів тому

@@justint9005around 2-5%is actually quite significant. I have very huge skepticism on the origin of current Peranakan identity anything prior 1600s. If someone only has one ancestor who’s Peranakan, under 5% means it’s 7-8 generations ago, which adds up to my prediction. (Considering SouthernChinese DNA profile is inclusive of indigenous proto-austronesian DNA) . The earliest account of the 1st generation mixed marriage Chinese in Batavia took place in early 1700s. Of course there were mixed Chinese prior but I am doubtful if the culture and lineage were passed down to the current generation of Babanyonya Paradigm. If someone wants to find their Peranakan origin, I would suggest them to take dna test which include paternal and maternal haplogroup, hence will have to be taken by the patriarchs of both side and patriarch of another step above. I think Peranakan communities need to stop fantasising on the 15th and 16th century origin until more historical finding and DNA technology advances.

Hang lipo was never mention in Chinese chronicle So the idea that peranakan is derive from her retinue is far from proven. I bet most peranakan are the product of 18th and 19th century union of Hokkien trader and female slave from Non muslim tribe of Indonesia and Bali

    • @bernardlokman5442

@@Ragingwire1 I completely agree. Very unlikely that 1400 peranakan would sustain such sinitic traits for 600+ years. Moreover, the population of the first migrants would be very small, and most probably not significant or exclusive enough to resist assimilation into Malay identity. Nowadays there are genetic tests such as 23andme where you can actually trace which generation of ancestor were the first peranakan.

From the pictures of early paranakans, they looked very different, more like aboriginal people. So it may not be a case of Malay-Chinese/Indian union. Also Malays would make sure their spouses of the other race convert to Islam before marriage. But this is not the case for paranakans.

Malays never wear kebaya, while Baba Nyonya (Chinese) in Singapore and Malaysia wear kebaya, I am sure their ancestors were immigrants from Java. Proof that Chinese and Malays never mixed, even for a second, they adopted the clothes of the Dutch colonialists' acculturation with the native Javanese. The position of Chinese descendants now remains as colonizers of the native Malay land, there is no cultural acculturation and cooperation with the native Malays. Singapore is the land of the Malays, not the land of India and China,What about the land of Baba Nyonya? They are descendants of Indonesian Chinese immigrants, not native Singaporeans and Malaysians.

Absurd for there to suggest the Peranakans are a only a mixture of racially integrated people which is close-minded and narrow, racist definition of the Straits-born, who are a group of people who adopted mixed beliefs and practices and were not just of interracial marriages. It's racist in its premise and easily misunderstood as if racial mix is the proof required. Anyone who is local born in these parts can claim to be Peranakan and therefore this is genetic nonsense.
